Ælfric produced other works to complement the teaching function of the
Grammar, particularly the Colloquy and Glossary. The Colloquy is an appealing
hypothetical Latin dialogue intended to give students practice in using a Latin
vocabulary. The Glossary provides lists of Latin words by subject matter which could
be memorized by students. Thirteen manuscripts of it survive, which account for over
half the manuscripts containing grammatical texts copied or owned by Anglo-Saxon
England from the end of the tenth century on. Its usefulness, however, came to an end
when Old English ceased to be understood in the twelfth thirteenth centuries.
