Henry the Eighth was Henry the Seventh's successor at the age of
18. He married his brother's widow Catherine of Aragon. Henry was
interested in theology and opposed Martin Luther's anti-Catholic
theses, earning the title of defender of the faith from the pope.
Later he asked the pope to invalidate his marriage to Catherine as
she had not given him a male heir but only a female, Mary.
The pope did not accept her request so Henry broke with Rome and
divorced Catherine. He later married Anne Boleyn who bore him his
daughter Elizabeth but his wife was accused of treason and
imprisoned. The king married Jane Seymour who bore him his son
Edward but she died in childbirth.
EDWARD VI
Edward the sixth ascended the throne when he was only 9 years
old. During his reign Thomas Cramner, the Archbishop of
Canterbury, wrote the Book of Common Prayer which contributed
to the development of the English language. The king died of
tuberculosis and chose as his heir Lady Jane Gray who was then
taken prisoner in the Tower of London.
MARY I
Spagna. Viene chiamata Bloody Mary poiché fece bruciare al rogo
300 martiri.
ELIZABETH 1
THE VIRGIN QUEEN
Elizabeth ascended the throne at the age of 25, the period of her
reign is considered the golden age of England. In fact it was a period
of stability and religious tolerance. She decided not to marry as she
considered marriage a danger. She thought a husband would lead
to many plots and troubles. She is called the virgin queen as she
declared that she would rule and die a virgin.
The Tudors inherited the concept of order from the medieval world.
They represented the universal order as a chain of being.
Anything outside the chain was considered insanity and
wickedness. The universe was governed by the divine will and
nature was the instrument of god, consequently the social
hierarchy was a product of nature.
DRAMA
primi teatri permanenti. Essi erano circolari o ottagonali.
auditorium buio.
