Behind the image
Ormai da lungo tempo la fotografia, in quanto immagine
artistica, dimostra la sua efficacia. Capace ancor oggi di
rivelarsi per il suo altissimo valore estetico e storico, ma
il senso profondo del fotografare rimane ancora attual-
mente una questione aperta e difficilmente risolvibile per
l’esistenza di numerose posizioni critiche. Tuttavia, quan-
do l’obiettivo è libero da qualsiasi vincolo rappresentativo,
la fotografia assume una dimensione “altra”.
Una dimensione che si allontana dal semplice aspetto do-
cumentaristico per focalizzarsi in un orizzonte molto più
ampio fatto di una gamma infinita di colori, dalle tonalità
e sfumature ricercatissime.
La fotografia di Arthur Tress è questo.
Una fotografia che dimostra la chiara appartenenza ad una
dimensione “altra”, dotata di un linguaggio dalle trame
sottili. Una sinfonia acuta, difficilmente inquadrabile in
una corrente artistica perchè di una dimensione assoluta-
mente eccezionale.
Un’opera che rilascia tutta l’estrosità del suo autore, dai
contrassegni mentali e filosofici, frutto di un’esperienza
solitaria, che tuttavia ci è dato di condividere in forma di
mostra.
Una mostra che ospita la straordinaria vicenda di un pro-
tagonista indiscusso del panorama contemporaneo dove è
riscontrabile, una profonda riflessione sui destini dell’arte
che supera le forme di necrosi con il rinnovamento delle
tipologie formali attraverso vere progressioni inventive.
Al di là di cicli e tematiche trattate, come l’iniziale indagine
di Open Space in the Inner city del 1971, o della pubblica-
zione di The Dream collector o ancora la raccolta di Thea-
ter of the Mind del 1976, le immagini di Arthur Tress sono
vere narrative raccontate, nelle quali si può assaporare il
trascorrere di un tempo fittizio, un tempo dove tutto può
accadere, dove tutto appare possibile. Un racconto che si
concentra prima di ogni altra cosa, sull’esperienza di un
uomo, alla costante ricerca di un’identità che, ha saputo
scrutarsi nel profondo della sua interiorità.
Un percorso difficile, decisamente autobiografico.
Un fare artistico che risponde alla necessità di scavare nel-
la quotidianità di vite private, di cui si raccolgono consape-

It has been for a long time now that photography, as
an artistic image, has been showing its effectiveness.
Capable, still today, of revealing its very high aesthetic and
historical value, even if the deep sense of photographing
is yet an open and rather difficult matter to solve, due
to the numerous criticisms. However, when the lens is
free from any representative tie, photography takes on
“another” dimension.
A dimension that moves away from the simple
documentary aspect, to focus on a much wider horizon
with an infinite range of colours, of very sought after
tones and shades.
This is Arthur Tress’s photography.
Photography that is clearly belonging to the “other”
dimension, endowed with a language of soft story-plots.
An acute symphony, rather difficult to frame into an artistic
current, due to an absolutely exceptional dimension.
A work that releases its author’s original creativity with
mind and philosophical countermarks as an offspring of
a solitary experience which we are yet given to share in
an exhibition format.
An exhibition that accommodates the extraordinary
event of an indisputable protagonist of the contemporary
panorama, where a profound thought can be traced on
the destinies of an art that goes beyond the necrosis
forms with the renewal of formal typologies through real
inventive progressions.
Over and above the cycles and treated themes, such as
the initial study of Open Space in the Inner city of 1971,
or the publication of The Dream collector or the collection
of Theatre of the Mind of 1976, Arthur Tress’s images are
real recounted narrations, in which it is possible to savour
the running of fictitious time, a time where anything
can happen, where everything appears possible. A tale
concentrated, before anything else, on the experience
of a man bent to the constant research of an identity
that he himself has been able to examine deeply in his
inwardness.
A difficult and decidedly autobiographical path.
An artistic doing that answers to the necessity of digging
