Sul ponteresso che attraversa canal grande si trova la statua di James

Joyce

Realizzata dallo scultore triestino Nino Spagnoli ( lo stesso cha ha scolpito quelle
di Svevo e Saba ) fu collocata sul ponte nel 2004 per ricordare il centenario
dell’arrivo di Joyce a Trieste

Rappresenta Joyce assorto nei suoi pensieri, con un libro sottobraccio (forse
proprio l'Ulisse che cominciò a scrivere a Trieste?) e il cappello in testa. 

Ai piedi della statua una targa riporta una citazione, tratta da una lettera alla moglie
Nora, che testimonia il forte legame che lo scrittore aveva con la città: “…la mia

anima è a Trieste”.

Esule volontario dall’Irlanda, James Joyce arriva a Trieste il 20 ottobre del 1904
insieme alla sua compagna Nora. Dopo un primo periodo vissuto a Pola, i due si
trasferiscono de nitivamente a Trieste nel 1905 e la loro prima abitazione fu al
terzo piano di un palazzo in Piazza del Ponterosso. (Piazza del Ponterosso 3, 3°
piano)

Questa forse la memoria più amata dai turisti, come se Joyce fosse ancora in vita,
quindi proporrei di fare una foto per ricordare questa giornata

On the ponteresso that crosses the grand canal is the statue of James Joyc
Made by the Trieste sculptor Nino Spagnoli (the same who sculpted those of Svevo
and Saba) it was placed on the bridge in 2004 to commemorate the centenary of
Joyce's arrival in Triest
It represents Joyce absorbed in his thoughts, with a book under his arm (perhaps
Ulysses who began writing in Trieste?) And a hat on his head
At the foot of the statue a plaque bears a quote, taken from a letter to his wife Nora,
which testi es to the strong bond that the writer had with the city: "... m
anima is in Trieste "
A volunteer exile from Ireland, James Joyce arrived in Trieste on 20 October 1904
together with his partner Nora. After a rst period lived in Pola, the two moved
de nitively to Trieste in 1905 and their rst home was on the third oor of a building
