Little more than ten years after it was
founded in 1992, Studio King Roselli has de-
veloped an impressive collection of projects
both in building and industrial design. The
studio is oriented towards a careful pursuit
of new languages, sensitive to formal and
technological developments in modern
architecture while capable of surprising 1

The encounter with historic memory is an
ingredient of architecture; it is so not neces-
sarily just for pure aesthetic ambitions, but
at times because the management of the
area for protecting the public heritage in-
evitably imposes it. This was the case of Ho- 1

Rispetto all’intorno, poi,
arredi o in certe soluzioni cromatiche come
nelle variegate luci delle camere, senza ri- Room Z

project and the development of an almost
total variation of the work. The building is
strongly defined by some clear directing
lines, including the detachment from the
ground to preserve the archeological ex-
cavations; a courtyard layout consisting of
three units with two side wings suspended
on pilotis; and finally the architectural ges-
ture of the fold, the project’s true deus ex
machina, which recurs several times in the
texture of the building, from the closure
vaults, to the façade’s front and also affects
the line of the decor elements in detail. The
hotel dialogues with a deft language with its
surroundings, fitting in well with the rigid
Umbertine framework and making a nod to
the nearby mono-unit of the station through
jumps in altitude and the profile of the roof,
on the one hand, and on the other, the de-
cisive composition in blocks, reinforced by
the use of special travertine powder based
plaster. The result is the creation of an ar-
chitecture that clearly expresses the studio’s
playful spirit, seen in the compositional
freedom of the furnishings and certain color
solutions such as the variegated lights of the
rooms, without doing away with the rigor-

ultime sperimentazioni di Herzog & De

ci e nell’impiego delle trasparenze o, ancora,
un certo gusto minimalista giapponese nei

non deve suscitare il disappunto della cri-
tica ma piuttosto far riflettere, osservatori e
progettisti insieme, sulla ubiquità di modi e
poetiche progettuali che possono entrare a
buon diritto nello specifico di un’architettura

connected to the studio’s design experience
that has garnered attention for the percep-
tive qualities of the object and the flexibility
of the form. There is a further reason related
to the spread of the “successful” models, fre-
quently published in specialized magazines,
which determine the cultural background
from which new generations of architects
draw with different levels or awareness and
ability to reformulate those models. In the
hotel, it is easy to perceive an affinity with
the most recent Herzog & De Meuron exper-
iments, especially in the treatment of lights
and in the use of transparencies, as well as
a certain Japanese minimalist taste in the
slat cuts of the openings. All of this ought not
provoke the irritation of critics, but should
make both observers and architects reflect
on the ubiquity of architectural modes and
poetics that can justly come into the specif-
ics of an architecture without distorting the
meaning and the singularity of the place of
construction.

privato o semipubblico dell’albergo. Un altro
e non ultimo sforzo decisivo dei progettisti
è rappresentato dall’analisi tipologica del
complesso alberghiero, che ha portato all’in-
dividuazione di 10 tipologie, per un totale di
235 stanze, elaborate sulla base del rapporto
fra camera e bagno fino al raggiungimento
della totale dissoluzione degli elementi di
separazione. Inoltre la distribuzione di tutti i
servizi annessi è stata risolta con molta chia-
rezza evitando sovrapposizioni con il nucleo
centrale delle camere e individuando alme-
no tre aree distinte in cui sono stati collocati
stati attenti a vestire l’edificio in funzione
