EPISTOLARY NOVEL

The epistolary novel is a novel made up of letters.

FRANCE: The first epistolary novel was Charles Louis de Montesquieu’s Letters Persan, which
speaks about two Persians travelling to Paris.
GERMANY: The Sorrows of Yanng Verter by J.Goethe was saccselful throughout Europe.
ITALY: Ugo Foscolo became very popular with the publication of Le Ultime Lettere di Jacopo Ortis,
an epistolary novel containing a bitter condamnation of Italy’s social and political situation.
ENGLAND: Samuel Richardson, who became a novelist at the age of 50, wrote one of the most
famous epistolary novels in English Literature:Pamela or Virtue reworded(1740-1742). Richardson
stated that this kaind of writing allowed the reader greater access to the character’s inner world. Even
if it is written in the form of letters, Pamela is not a “static” narrative but it is full of action and
daialog.

ITALIA: Ugo Foscolo è diventato molto popolare con la pubblicazione di Le Ultime Lettere di Jacopo
Ortis, un romanzo epistolare contenente un'amara condanna della situazione sociale e politica italiana.
INGHILTERRA: Samuel RIchardson, che divenne un romanziere all'età di 60 anni, scrisse uno dei
più famosi romanzi epistolari della letteratura inglese: Pamela o virtù premiata (1740-1742).
Richardson ha affermato che questo tipo di scrittura ha consentito al lettore un maggiore accesso al
mondo interiore del personaggio. Anche se è scritta in forma di lettere, Pamela non è una narrazione
“statica” ma è piena di azione e dialogo.
