Tra storia e retorica: il contrasto Cicerone-Antonio nella settima suasoria di Seneca il Vecchio.
On the theme of the seventh suasoria by Seneca. The strange and unlikely request addressed to Cicero by Anthony to burn his own works in exchange for his life reveals how
deeply the consul feared the orators ingenium. It also shows that the contrast between the
two parties was not merely of political but also of cultural and intellectual nature. That
such was the case is implied already in the second Philippic, which serves as a hypotext for
Senecas suasoria, but the fact is even more easily understandable for the declaimers if they
simply take into consideration some incidents of book burning that occurred during the
times of Augustus and Tiberius.

Prassiretorico-linguistica del Liber Abaci di Leonardo il Pisano.
The paper presents some preliminary significant results of a research dealing with Fibonaccis language aiming at the publication of the first critical edition of the Liber Abaci by
Leonardo Pisano, i.e. real name of Fibonacci. The main features of the languages technical
register used by Fibonacci are the followings: the iussivo-prescriptive subjunctive; the
frequency of anacolutha, the peculiarity of the calculations syntactic structure, which
includes the imperative of the operation and future of the result; the variety in construction
of the multiplications verbs; the use of preverbi and the ambiguity of the technical vocabulary. The analysis of these linguistic phenomena is complemented by relevant textual
references.

Un cattivo sovrano in Polluce.
Julius Pollux, a lexicographer in Athens under the emperor Commodus, devotes a chapter
of the Onomasticon to a bad emperor. Many references are in the works of greek historians,
especially of Cassius Dio, contemporary of Julius Pollux.

Un esempio di comunicazione mancata: il discorso di Druso nel finale della Consolatio ad
Liviam.
This paper analyzes the last section of the Consolatio ad Liviam (ll. 445-474), where dead
Drusus speaks with his mother to comfort her. He gives no answers to the desperate
questions of his mother (ll. 121-164), but he remembers his honours and glory of his
earthly life. His speech can be compared to the final chapter of Consolatio ad Marciam,
where Marcias father, Cremutius, speaks from the afterlife to console his daughter grieving for the death of her son, Metilius.

Nuove funzione dellerudizione classica e comunicazione letteraria nel mondo poetico di Giovanni Pontano: gli esempi di Hendec. II 24 e Urania I 970-1023.

The author analyzes an epigram of I. I. Pontanus Hendecasyllaborum libri (II 24) and a
piece of his astrological poem Urania (I 970-1023) to clarify how much originality,
freshness and inspiration can be hidden behind the cult of the ancient scholarship and
classical mythology in the humanistic poems, in spite of those who saw emotional coldness and lack of originality in the humanistic poetry. In the first case, in light of the reuse
and renovation of the classical erudition and mythology, the author reconstructs a refined
and unitary communication game between men of letters, in which Pontanus poem seems
to be the equivalent in verse of a prose epistle between friends. In the second case he shows
that the humanist through a kind of reutilization of the classical-erudite memory has
accomplished one of his programmatic commitments: that is, a process of literary
transfiguration and ennoblement of all those places that had represented the scenario of
his practical life and his emotional and imaginary world. These two interpretation
exercises aim to clarify what should be our critical attitude towards a large part of the
humanistic literature, because it does not employ the complex apparatus of classical mythology and erudition for purely extrinsic reasons, but rather to develop a refined communication code among peers and to enter into a fruitful dialogue with the past.

Soluzioni costruttive ed effetti sugli spettatori in alcuni scoli antichi a Sofocle ed Euripide.
Several ancient exegetical and critical scholia to Sophocles and Euripides comment upon
concentration avoiding unnecessary delays, insofar as dramatists, economizing their
plays, have to take into account specific factors for theatre. Observations of this kind also
aim to highlight ways authors anticipate forthcoming events to their audience in order to
increase interest and attention.

La Laus Civitatis Neapolitanae di Zanobi Acciaioli tra memorie erudite e precettistica menandrea.
The essay analizes the Oratio in laudem Civitatem Neapolitanae by Zanobi Acciaioli in
relation to the genres precepts, classical models and sources. The oration (delivered in the
plenary meeting of the Domican held on June 15, 1503) proves to be the result of
knowledge of the classical language and literature of Zanobi Acciaioli, who was particularly fond of the patristic literature. The essay reveals how the Oratio can connect of the
traditional topical descriptive and the celebration of Naples; and it is an attempt to renovate, modernize and bend to new purposes of the Laus urbis, according to the
classification provided by Menander Rhetors Ars, including suggestions from Aelius
Aristides Panathenaic.

is presented as controversial. According to Aratus, celestial bodies were given their names
by our predecessors. In vv. 367-385 he writes that someone in the past both devised and
named the constellations for the first time: as a consequence of this, to be able to call the
constellations by their names is now the same as knowing them thoroughly. Aratus often
deals with the names of the celestial bodies from an aetiological point of view, saying or
implying that they are named after their shapes or their positions in the sky, or also after
words he associates with their distinctive features. Apart from vv. 367-385, Aratus always
speaks of those who name the celestial bodies in the plural. They are always left anonymous, with one remarkable exception.

Due lettere di Alcifrone (epp. 1, 2; 2, 1Benner-Fobes).
The analysis of two Alciphrons letters aims to highlight the linguistic differentiation
between the manuscripts and the intentional different variants choice made by the
editors. This diversification depends on the Atticism that the ancient and modern editors
intended to give to the Alciphrons work. His collection of fictious letters is a significative
testimonial of the intellectuals ability in the literative communication in the imperial age.
Full of citations and erudite reminiscences, but well anchored to contemporary reality due
to the literary form and the utilization of a modern lexicon too, the letter shave a sender
and two addresses, one imaginary address and the other one real, the readers audience, to
which the work was really directed. A linguistic exam of all letters and a careful sources
search is the essential premise to a future critical edition.

Nonno di Panopoli e la poesia tecnica: lo sconvolgimento astronomico nella Tifonia (Dion.
1,163-257; 650-659).
The paper aims to speculate upon the technical competence which characterizes Nonnus
poetry through the reading of an astronomical passage: Dion. 1, 163-257; 2, 650-659. This
passage has been investigated applying three different view points: the first deals with
astronomy, the second with poetry, the third with astrology. The analysis highlights the
complexity of the Greek text; the authors deep knowledge of the astronomical tradition;
the narrative coherence which leads some poetical choices, together with a lexical and
rhetorical interest; the influence of the astrological production.

Rappresentazione dei dedicatari e auto-rappresentazione dei poeti negli epigrammi greci det

In this paper I aim to analyse the words and rhetorical structures used by late Hellenistic
epigrammatists (100 BCE - 50 CE) in the epigrams addressed to their patrons, mostly
Roman patricians and emperors. The purpose of this work is to show that the traditional
formulae of dedicatory epigrams are often re-employed by the poets of the Garland of
Philip in order to portrait the amicitia between themselves and the dedicatees. The
