All’epoca,

Brembo was founded in 1961, just a few kilometres from Bergamo. It was
established by my father Emilio, Italo Breda, myself and my brother Sergio.
We were a small company and in the early years the company was known as
OMDS, Officine Meccaniche di Sombreno. Back then, we worked on mechanical
processing for third parties.
From that background, an extraordinary business adventure unfolded
that has made Brembo an outstanding Italian and international brand
that has become synonymous with brakes the world over.
There is one episode in our history that marked the future of the company
and which, if looked at in perspective, gives us a certain sense of destiny.
It was quite an unexpected event in 1964: a truck coming from England
and carrying a load of brake discs for Alfa Romeo crashed. At the time,
disc brakes were only manufactured by the British, and Alfa Romeo,
in order to repair the damage, asked Brembo to mend the damaged parts.
Chance and luck can help, but you have to be able to take advantage
of certain opportunities: we therefore decided to try to produce the discs
in Italy ourselves, at more competitive prices. From this brilliant idea,
helped by some luck, we were the first company in Italy to start producing
brake discs, immediately steering our energies towards research
and innovation, experimenting with alternative materials and more refined
processes.
Courtesy of Brembo
Thanks to this new approach, Brembo’s history has been marked by major
breakthroughs: the production of the first complete system for motorbikes
fitted as standard on Guzzi and then Laverda bikes in 1972, supplying
Ferrari in Formula 1 three years later, the first aluminium callipers
and the first carbon discs in the 1980s, followed by our listing on the stock
exchange, the opening of more and more new plants in all the countries
where our customers operate and the inauguration of the Kilometro Rosso
just outside Bergamo, where our beautiful headquarters are located.
Over the years, we have been guided by a strong passion for our work.

UN APPROCCIO CIRCOLARE
ALLA BIOECONOMIA It was 1988 when, working as a researcher within the Montedison Group, I started
applying my knowledge of chemistry to raw materials and agricultural waste
from the Ferruzzi Group with the aim of developing bioplastics. I was the head

of a research group and I truly believed that science and technology could
improve the world and people’s lives. I still remember the excitement of the first
time I managed to produce a bioplastic and patent it: I still had no idea
that we had invented another one of the millions of products crowding
the planet without worrying about production and consumption patterns.

I have seen areas become increasingly marginalised and prey to global groups
looking for places to source products at the lowest cost; I have witnessed
the cultural and economic impoverishment of entire social classes
and areas. The wealth generated in the past by high-impact production gave way
to unemployment and pollution in the region. In 1996 Montedison’s renewable

I was fascinated by the idea that everyone wanted to become a maker.
I was very attracted to this trend but at the same time I wasn’t entirely convinced
Lorenzo Frangi by the prediction that every garage would become a factory and industry would

about milling, so it was natural to ask myself, quite simply, why not think
of a milling cutter with the same kind of flexibility?
I started looking at the market for desktop milling cutters (the counterpart
to desktop 3D printers, except that instead of adding material, they remove it)
and realised that there was a big problem with the working area: these tools

in parole povere?

Alpi has come up with a formula to reinvent wood, can you explain it in simple
terms?
I have to say that we did not invent sheet wood to be used instead of solid
wood; before us, there were already natural veneers of walnut, oak and many
other types of wood. However, we have the credit for industrialising
this process. At the beginning of the 20th century teak, walnut or rosewood
were among the most sought-after woods by decorators, and the spirit
that guided our research was that of reducing costs and having a product
that was more suitable for industrial use. Our intuition was to transform a single basic
wood into varieties of different colours and grains, eventually creating new ones.
The product, unlike natural wood, is fairly standardised, in the sense that it follows
repeatable rules; the rectangular shape is always the same and the design
and colour are also homogenous. Especially the colour.
The process, in the simplest way I can put it, consists of disassembling
a log, that is, reducing it into rectangular sheets of equal size. We dye these
sheets according to the final appearance we want to reproduce. As for the
grain component, once dyed, we glue the sheets one on top of the other
to form blocks of rectangular sheets that make up a new log: square, not round.
It is a semi-finished product that we familiarly call an Alpi log.
It is formed in presses with different moulds according to the grain

we want to obtain: this is where the magic lies. The major thing to point out
is that we are dealing with a designed pattern, not a random one: this is quite
an important point because a huge problem for architects or those who use wood
is the difference in colour or pattern. This produces less waste. A natural wood
produces a minimum waste of about 40%, while our sheet produces almost none.

Andai a cercarlo.

he made a drawing and chose four colours. Unlike Angelo Mangiarotti’s drawing,
which was evocative of a fabric, Sottsass worked on the natural pattern

“it’s not wood”. I have to say, though, that Sottsass’s wood sold very little; it was
probably too far ahead of its time, and I was even mocked a bit for pushing
it in that direction.

BREVE ACCENNO
ALLA STORIA DEI
MATERIALI MONTESSORI

century is curiously little known. There is, however, a trace of it in the preface
to L’Autoeducazione nelle scuole elementari, one of her best-known texts: “It was
in 1911 that a friend of mine, Donna Maria Maraini Guerrieri Gonzaga,” writes
Montessori, “wanted to set the first foundations for a private, completely free
experiment, to see if with other, more advanced materials it would be possible
to continue the educational approach that had already been successful with
small children”.

The colour, the harmony of the forms, but also the exactness that make them
so attractive, are also the underlying reason that induces those who use
these objects to use watchful, respectful gestures, inspiring special care and
concentration when handling them. In this sense, it is precisely the feeling
aroused by the perfection of quality that helps – especially in children handling
them for the first time – the development of traits such as constancy, self-
control, self-discipline and above all autonomy.
GAM Gonzagarredi Montessori, in taking up the legacy of the first workshop set
up in the early 20th century, continues to produce them with the same precision:
it is one of the four companies in the world whose materials are officially
approved by the Association Montessori Internationale.

Note sull’allestimento Notes on the exhibit design
ALLEGGERIRE
più semplice è mandare in giro una certa quantità di fogli grigi di Tyvek The set-up for a touring exhibition must be light and take up as little space
When the objects on display are extraordinary, as in this case,

ADATTARE
MOSTRARE L’IMPOSSIBILE
L’allestimento è composto da strutture modulari ripetitive, smontabili
e facilmente assemblabili.
a disposizione.
CRUMPLING
The exhibition will travel around the world, in rooms that are different each
time: all kinds of colours, paintings, stucco, baroque mirrors, wooden furniture,
boiserie. So the need arises to design lightweight screens. The simplest solution
is to send around a certain quantity of grey Tyvek (non-woven fabric) sheets,
to be hung in a double layer on the rear crossbeams of the structure, so as
to be perfectly vertical behind the objects on display. The only thing to do is
RESPECTING
The white structures in the exhibition design serve to create silence around
the exhibits. They represent an ideal area of three-dimensional respect, they
let the objects breathe, they give the visitor the right distance to best observe
and understand. We have worked with the curatorial team to enhance the
presentation of the objects without raising the voice with signs that are too
aesthetically connoted; the design of the installation takes a step backwards so
as not to raise the tone of the conversation.
ADAPTING
The exhibition is made up of repetitive modular structures that can be dismantled
and easily assembled. This makes it possible to ship almost flat modules that
take up as little space as possible, and to divide the exhibition into parts, so that
it can be easily adapted to the different sizes and types of space available.
In this way, the most suitable layout can be put together for each exhibition
venue.
WISHING
Now that the project is over and our wall-less rooms are ready to host this
extraordinary selection of extraordinary pieces, now we are sure that this
beautiful festival, this world tour that is about to begin, will be a beautiful tale
of unexpected stories. All that remains for us, then, is to wish our exhibition to be
a kind of silent page on which to passionately recount that part of Italian industry
that looks to the future with new and sometimes slightly unconscious courage.
