WHO
WHAT
WHEN
WHERE
WHY
HOW
In Italian…
WHO: CHI
WHAT: COSA
WHEN: QUANDO
WHERE: DOVE
WHY: PERCHÈ
HOW: COME
Essere and Avere are auxiliary
verbs (verbi ausiliari) and are
used to create verbal forms that
are translated in English with the
past tense or present perfect.
Right now I’ll show you how to
make questions (come fare
domande) in Italian using the
present tense of these two verbs
Remember that unlike English,
in Italian, the subject is not
compulsory and actually rarely
used.
That is why in the following
slides, I will put the pronouns in
the parenthesis.
CHI + verbo essere/avere
( Who + verb to be/to have)
Example:
-Question:
“Cosa è/ Cos’è?” (What is it?)
-Answer:
“È un quadro.” (It’s a painting)
QUANDO + verbo essere/avere
( When + verb to be/to have)
Quando sono/ho (io)?
Quando sei/hai (tu)?
Quando è/ha (lui/lei)?
Quando siamo/abbiamo
(noi)?
Quando siete/avete (voi)?
Quando sono/hanno (loro)?
Example:
-Question:
“Quando sei nato?” (When were you born?)
-Answer:
“Sono nato il 25 Maggio 1995” (I was born on
25th May 1995)
DOVE + verbo essere/avere
( Where + verb to be/to have)
Example:
-Question:
“Dove siete?” (Where are you?)
-Answer:
“Siamo a scuola” (We are at school)
PERCHÈ + verbo essere/avere
( Why + verb to be/to have)
Example:
-Question:
“Perchè è stanco?” (Why is he tired?)
-Answer:
“Perché ha tanto lavoro.” (Because he has got a
lot of work)
COME + verbo essere/avere
( How + verb to be/to have)
Example:
-Question:
“Come stai?” (How are you?)
-Answer:
“Sto bene, grazie” (I’m fine, thanks)
