The Vita-Salute San Raffaele University is part of a complex
organization that you will come to know well during your
years of study, years that I trust you will spend with
diligence, curiosity and creativity.
Your efforts will find support in an avant-garde
infrastructure, in new Faculties and new courses, in
audacious research projects and, above all, in people.
San Raffaele is made up of people; people who express
their daily commitment towards excellence, their respect
for their fellows, their courage in striving towards new
objectives in science, knowledge and culture.
To vanquish disease and suffering has always been the aim
of the Opera San Raffaele.
To penetrate the understanding of the True and the
Absolute, and thus of the Human Being, is the aim of the
Vita-Salute University.

Il San Raffaele nasce come Opera Monte
Tabor, nome che insieme evocazione e
ispirazione dal luogo della trasfigurazione
di Cristo:
Sei giorni dopo, Ges prese con s
Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni suo fratello e
li condusse in disparte, su un alto monte.
E fu trasfigurato davanti a loro; il suo
volto brill come il sole e le sue vesti
divennero candide come la luce.

Le ragioni di questa denominazione da
parte del Fondatore dellOpera: trasfigurare
la medicina da semplice professione in
arte sacro-sacerdotale.
Nelle parole di Don Luigi:
La trasfigurazione di Ges sul Monte
Tabor innanzitutto la prova della sua
identit umano-divina ().

DallOpera San Raffaele hanno preso vita
innanzitutto lOspedale San Raffaele di
Milano (inaugurato nel 1970), ma anche
lHospital So Rafael di Salvador di Bahia
in Brasile e importanti strutture sanitarie

Mediterraneo, Est Europeo.

The San Raffaele organization was born as
the Opera Monte Tabor, a name which
evokes, and takes inspiration from, the
place of Christs transfiguration:
And after six days Jesus taketh Peter,
James and John his brother, and bringeth
them up into an high mountain apart.
And he was transfigured before them,
and his face did shine as the sun, and his
raiment was white as the light.

This is why the Founder of the Opera
Monte Tabor coined this name: the
transformation of medicine from being
merely a profession into a sacred,
sacerdotal art.
In the words of Don Luigi:
The transfiguration of Jesus on Mount
Tabor is above all the proof of his human-
divine identity ().
() I intend, from the historical fact of
Christs transfiguration on Tabor, to
deduce the reasons that underlie
research (quid est homo?) and the
evaluation of man, hence how the sick
may be gathered in and treated when
circumstances reveal its somato-psycho-
spiritual authenticity.
It is to this reality that culture,
environment and treatment methods
must conform and transfigure themselves.
In short, the sick man, whose natural
harmony is in turmoil, must not lose his
physiognomy, his authentic being.

The Opera San Raffaele has given birth
most prominently to the San Raffaele
Hospital in Milan (inaugurated in 1970),
but also to the San Raffaele Salvador di
Bahia Hospital in Brazil, as well as to
substantial health facilities in Africa, Latin
America, Asia, the Mediterranean region
and Eastern Europe.

Ogni anno, la Festa del Ringraziamento
occasione di incontro per tutti coloro che
condividono limpegno del San Raffaele
verso nuovi risultati di eccellenza.
Nella domenica dellAscensione il San
Raffaele festeggia il proprio raccolto, i
frutti del lavoro di ricerca, insegnamento
e cura, e al tempo stesso inaugura nuove
realizzazioni e lancia nuove sfide: reparti,
progetti innovativi (didattici, di ricerca,
edilizi), ma anche momenti di arte, di
svago, di solidariet.

The San Raffaele Hospital is the Temple
of Medicine, a place in which profound
attention and a special care for suffering
have transformed medicine into a Sacred
Art, and its practice into Priesthood.
Respect for the individual does not only
consist in medical help, but also in total
awareness of the patients Humanity.
It consists in being close to people.
In all those moments of welcoming and
socializing that aim to free the hospital
from a climate that might hinder healing.
In the Central Admissions Office, a
Salvatore Fiume sculpture is dedicated to
medicine as a sacred art, along with Don
Luigis exhortation:
Let us transform medicine into
a Sacred Art!.
Thanksgiving

Every year, the Thanksgiving Feast gathers

together all those who share San
Raffaeles commitment to ongoing
excellence.

At a separate feast on Ascension Sunday,

San Raffaele celebrates its harvest, the
fruits of its research, teaching and
assistance. At the same time, it
inaugurates new achievements and
launches new challenges: wards,
innovative projects (didactic,
infrastructural, research); but also art,
entertainment and solidarity.

chiamer Citt delluomo S. Raffaele. la ricerca biologica (di base traslazionale

LAteneo viene inaugurato con la Facolt
di Psicologia cui seguono nel 1998 la
Facolt di Medicina e Chirurgia e nel
2002 la Facolt di Filosofia.

The Vita-Salute San Raffaele University
came into being in 1996 within the
Opera San Raffaele of Milan, which
hereinafter shall be called The San
Raffaele City of Man. The general theme
of the Operas endeavour is Quid est
homo.
The University was inaugurated with the
Faculty of Psychology, followed in 1998
by the Faculty of Medicine and in 2002
by the Faculty of Philosophy.
The Rector gave the latter the task of
steering thought back to the tangibility of
what is real: to reflect on good and truth
as the guiding principles of daily life.
At the bidding of its Founder and Rector,
sac. prof. Luigi M. Verz, the University
investigates what and who man is
through biological research (basic,
translational and clinical) and also under the injunction: go forth, teach, excellence, interdisciplinarity, the unity of

The Life-Health spirit
The Founder used the following words to explain the name of
the University, which in 2006 celebrated its 10-year anniversary:
I called it Life-Health in the sense that life is complete Being,
and that health is the balance between the components that
make a being an authentic man: body, intellect, soul. Any
deficiency in any of the three components makes man less man.
Accordingly, my University will cover every science at the highest
level: medicine, neuroscience and cognitivism, philosophy,
theology, anthropology, cosmology.

Being human is the harmony of togetherness.
The University teaches students to know this being, both in its
physical and in its intellectual form. It teaches them to seek and

Dalle pagine delle Scritture, in particolare dal Salmo 8, lAteneo
trae la propria missione che quella di rispondere alla domanda
Quid est homo? (Che cos luomo?): sullessere uomo (Quis
est homo), infatti, inteso come unicum biologico, psicologico e
spirituale, che lUniversit articola il proprio progetto formativo, al
fine di formare figure professionali competenti e di alto livello.
La pergamena posta allingresso dellUniversit richiama il Salmo
di Davide:
O Signore, nostro Dio, quanto grande il tuo nome su tutta la
terra: sopra i cieli si innalza la tua magnificenza.

Quid est homo?
The University draws its mission from the Scriptures, and in
particular from Psalm 8, a mission that aims to answer the
question Quid est homo? (What is Man?): it is the human being

The Universitys emblem is a re-

The theory, which Vitruvius outlines as a

superimposing the human figure over the
flat figures described by Vitruvius, and by
thus rendering Vitruviuss notion visible.
This image was chosen as the emblem
for the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University
because as well as heralding modern
science, with its technical and
technological development, it also
proclaims the centrality of the human
person: hence the dominance in the logo
of the question Quid est homo?, the
answering of which is the Universitys
vocation.
The previously quoted borrowing from
Psalm 8 expresses the idea that technical
and theoretical preparation must be
accompanied by a unifying vision of the
human being: the biological, spiritual and
social components are an indivisible
unity. Accordingly, the Universitys mission
is to heal; in other words to perfect the
human person by investigating the
pertinent, essential biological structures,
by curing associated pathologies, by
uncovering human intellectual potential
and by fathoming mans spiritual and
moral resources.

Allingresso dellUniversit, nel cortile del
Dibit 1, si erge la statua di Tobia realizzata
da Salvatore Fiume nel 1995.
Il bronzo un omaggio allOpera San
Raffaele che proprio dal Libro di Tobia
trae vocazione e nome.
Il Libro, uno dei deuterocanonici della
Bibbia, ambientato nel VII secolo a.C.
Narra la storia di una famiglia ebraica
della trib di Neftali, condotta prigioniera
a Ninive nel V secolo a.C., composta dal
padre, Tobi, dalla madre Anna e dal
figlio Tobia.
Divenuto prigioniero in Assiria, il pio Tobi,
prodigandosi in aiuto ai propri
connazionali e nel corso di varie traversie,
perde il proprio patrimonio e
diviene cieco.
Sentendo ormai prossima la fine, egli
manda il figlio Tobia nella Media presso
un parente, Gabael, a riscuotere dieci
talenti dargento lasciatigli in deposito.
Tobia trova aiuto per il viaggio in un
giovane, Azaria, che si offre di
accompagnarlo: si tratta in realt

luce, di visione del Bene e del Vero.
Alla vicenda di Tobia dedicato anche un
gruppo marmoreo, il Megalite, che orna
una fontana, situato dal 1993 allingresso
dellOspedale, accanto alla Spianata del
Buon Samaritano (a sua volta simbolo
della medicina e dellassistenza cristiana).
Dellaltezza di oltre 4 metri, scolpita in
marmo rosso di Verona - rosso come il
sangue, simbolo di cuore e di amore fino
al dono di s - limponente scultura
opera del maestro Enrico Manfrini.
Questa fontana collegata con unaltra
sottostante attraverso un corso dacqua
che simboleggia il fiume Tigri, nel quale
Tobia aveva pescato il pesce da cui aveva
tratto fiele, fegato e cuore per curare il
padre.
Tobias
Salvatore Fiumes 1995 statue of Tobias
stands in the DIBIT 1 quadrangle, at the
entrance to the University.
This bronze statue pays homage to the
Opera San Raffaele, which draws both
name and vocation from the Book of
Tobias.
The Book, which is a deuterocanonical
text of the Bible, is set in the VII Century
B.C. It tells the story of a Jewish family of
the Naphtali Tribe. The family is taken
prisoner and moved to Niniveh in the V
Century B.C. and comprises the father,
Tobit, the mother Anna and the son
Tobias.
Having been imprisoned in Assyria,
having proffered his co-nationals
prodigious amounts of aid, and having
suffered numerous mishaps, the pious
Tobit loses his wealth and becomes blind.
Sensing he is near the end, he sends his
son Tobias to a relative, Gabael, in Media,
in order to recover 10 talents of silver left
in Gabaels care.
Tobias is helped on his way by a young
man called Azaria, who is, in fact, the
Archangel Raphael, who God has sent to
alleviate Tobits suffering. Only at the end
of the Book will the Archangel declare his
real identity.
Thanks to advice from Azaria (Raphael),
who instructs Tobias to wipe Tobits eyes
with gall from a fish caught in the River
Tigris, Tobias is able to restore his fathers
sight.
Tobias thus symbolizes salvation and
light, the vision of Good and Truth.
There is also a marble ensemble, the
Megalith, dedicated to Tobias. Decorating
a fountain, it has stood since 1993 at the
entrance to the Hospital, next to the Path
of the Good Samaritan (the symbol of
medicine and Christian charity).
More than 4 metres high and sculpted in
red marble from Verona blood red, the
symbol of the heart and of the love that
gives of itself this imposing sculpture is
the work of Enrico Manfrini.
This Megalith fountain is connected to
another by a channel symbolizing the
Tigris, where Tobias caught the fish
whose gall was used to treat Tobias
father.

Alla sommit della Cupola del Dibit 2, nuova sede dellUniversit,

si trova la statua dellArcangelo Raffaele, guida e soccorso di
Tobia, ispirazione dellOpera.
LAngelo in cammino verso il Bene, un braccio rivolto a Dio,
mentre laltro tiene il pesce miracoloso della guarigione.
Realizzato su disegno di Carmelo Lizzio la bianca scultura, con
profili dorati, ha unaltezza di quasi nove metri.
Vessillo dellOpera, sovrasta e protegge il San Raffaele di oggi e di
domani.

Con il San Raffaele issato sulla Cupola della nostra basilica, la

parola dordine non pu essere che: ottimismo! Ed lottimismo
che io ho visto splendidamente rilucere nei vostri occhi.

The Archangel Raphael

The top of the Cupola of Dibit 2, the new University

Headquarters, is adorned with the statue of the Archangel
Raphael, the guide and saviour of Tobias, the inspiration behind
the Opera San Raffaele.
The Angel is in mid-stride towards Good, one hand outstretched
towards God, whilst the other holds the miraculous fish of
healing.
Created by Carmelo Lizzio, the white sculpture with gold
trimming is almost nine metres high.
Symbol of the Opera, it stands over and protects the San Raffaele
of today and tomorrow.

With San Raphael hoisted upon the Cupola of our basilica, the
rallying cry can be none other than: optimism! And it is optimism
that I have seen gleaming splendidly in your eyes.

Al piano seminterrato della costruzione, crocevia delle attivit del
San Raffaele, si trova il Ciborio, allinterno del quale laltare a
foggia di Barca-cattedra sullacqua ricorda quelle barche da cui
spesso Cristo parlava alla folla.
Di nuovo si mise a insegnare lungo il mare. E si riun attorno a
lui una folla enorme, tanto che egli sal su una barca e l rest
seduto, stando in mare, mentre la folla era a terra lungo la riva.

The Ciborium and
the Boat-Teaching Chair
The Ciborium, situated in the semi-basement of the building, is
the crossroads of San Raffaeles activities. It houses an Altar
styled as a boat-teaching chair on water, and is reminiscent of the
boats from which Jesus frequently preached to the multitudes.
And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was

Il DNA
Ad accogliere chi entra nel Dibit 2, il DNA, simbolo per eccellenza
della ricerca e dellessenza dellessere umano. A partire dalla
chiocciola si innalza per 25 metri verso il vertice della cupola. Di
cristallo la prima cupola, trasparente la seconda, a indicare che la
Verit raggiungibile.

La scultura lignea sospesa al centro della Basilica come lo

lessere umano tra terra limitata e cielo infinito, tra ricerca
graduale e verit tutta intera, tra alfa e omega, tra la propria
origine e la propria finalit escatologica eterna.

DNA
Whoever enters Dibit 2 is welcomed by the DNA sculpture, the
very symbol of research and of the essence of the human kind.
Starting from the Snail below, it winds upwards 25 metres
towards the top of the Cupola. The first cupola is made of crystal
while the second is transparent, thus showing that the Truth is
achievable.

The wooden sculpture hangs at the centre of the Basilica, as man

hangs between the circumscribed earth and the infinite heavens,
between gradual research and the whole truth, between alpha
and omega, between ones origins and ones eternal
eschatological destiny.

Gli Alberi della Sapienza
Creati su disegno di don Luigi M. Verz, i maestosi Alberi che
accolgono chi arriva in Universit sono intagliati in varie essenze
di legno a rappresentazione della molteplicit da cui hanno vita le
scienze, la ricerca, la cultura.
Completano la naturalistica scultura lottavo Salmo del Quid est
homo?, un accenno alluomo vitruviano del Logo e leffige di
unaquila, simbolo di sapienza e di ascesa verso lAssoluto.
Gli Alberi sono modello e richiamo della pi estesa decorazione
lignea che abbraccia lAula Magna, denominata Caravella Santa
Maria, ricoprendone le pareti con un policromo intreccio silvestre,
simbolo dellintreccio dei diversi saperi (medici, psicologici,
filosofici, teologici) e della conoscenza.

The Trees of Knowledge
Created from a design by Don Luigi M. Verz, the majestic Trees
that welcome people on their arrival at the University are carved
from various types of wood so as to represent the multiplicity
from which science, research and culture stem.
This naturalistic sculpture is completed with Psalm 8 of the Quid
est homo?, referring to the Vitruvian man of the logo and to the
effigy of an eagle, a symbol of knowledge and of the ascent
towards the Absolute.
The Trees serve both as a model for and as an introduction to
the more extensive wood decoration that adorns the Aula Magna
(Great Hall), namely the Caravel Saint Mary. Covering the walls
with multi-coloured sylvan interweaving, it symbolizes the
interconnection between various disciplines (medicine,
psychology, philosophy, theology) and knowledge itself.

All the University lecture halls are dedicated to Saints and
scholars, philosophers, doctors and scientists of all types and of
all cultures. Each hall was personally baptized by Don Luigi in his
pledge to enshrine, through the names, the talents and ideals
that are dearest to the University.
In welcoming students, the lecture halls unfurl the deep
meanings of real culture, which consists in
knowing that one knows nothing, and needing to know. To
satisfy this need involves intellectual elaboration within oneself,
along with the assistance of place, of written and oral tradition,
and of an environmental whole that provides the greatest
possible social protection.

del Buon Samaritano
e la campana Laetitia
Dal 30 giugno 2002 lOspedale San Raffaele si apre a chi entra
con la Spianata del Buon Samaritano: lo spiazzo antistante
lospedale allietato da una fontana ornata da cinque pannelli in
altorilievo di marmo, ognuno dellaltezza di 3 metri, che illustrano
la nota parabola.

larrivo alla locanda dove il Samaritano assicura al ferito vitto
e cure.
La scultura anche una fontana, via dacqua verso la medicina
raffigurata nellopera di Manfrini e memoria dellamore come
centro della vita di relazione che nel riconoscere e assistere il
prossimo non fa distinzioni di nessun genere, ma si slancia senza
vincoli verso il bene.
Fa inoltre parte dellopera una campana, Laetitia, benedetta a
Roma da Papa Giovanni Paolo II nel 1995, che simboleggia la
gioia della guarigione.

The Esplanade
of the Good Samaritan
and the Laetitia bell
Since 30th June 2002, the San Raffaele Hospital has welcomed
patients and visitors with the Esplanade of the Good Samaritan: a
clearing in front of the hospital enlivened by a fountain that is in
turn adorned by five, high-relief marble panels, each one 3
metres in height, which collectively illustrate the well-known
parable.
The sculptor, Carmelo Lizzio, shows the traveller on his way, the
ambush by the brigands, the indifferent priest, the Samaritan who
succours the victim, and, finally, the arrival at the inn, where the
Samaritan makes sure that the wounded man receives
sustenance and care.
The sculpture is also a fountain, a waterway towards the
medicine represented in the statue by Manfrini, and a memento
of love as the centre of human relations; love that recognizes and
helps fellow beings without distinctions of any kind, and that
hurls itself without hesitation towards goodness.
We must not forget the bell, named Laetitia, blessed by Pope
John Paul II in 1995, which symbolizes the joy of healing.

A completamento del piazzale dedicato al
Buon Samaritano, una scultura in bronzo
raffigurante una foglia di vite e un
ramoscello dulivo saluta larrivo in
Direzione Sanitaria; unaltra, gemella,
quello nella nuova sede della ristorazione,
punto dincontro per studenti e
dipendenti.
Sono lolio e il vino, usati come veri
medicamenti, sintesi della carit delle
azioni come da insegnamento della
parabola:
Invece un Samaritano, che era in
viaggio, passandogli accanto lo vide e
nebbe compassione. Gli si fece vicino, gli
fasci le ferite, versandovi olio e vino;
poi, caricatolo sopra il suo giumento, lo
port a una locanda e si prese cura di
lui.

Intorno a un ulivo secolare, di ben 600
anni, sorta la Chiesa dellUlivo, piccolo
luogo raccolto di meditazione e preghiera
accanto allAccettazione Centrale.

The Vine
and the Olive tree
To complete the Good Samaritan
forecourt, a bronze sculpture representing
a vine leaf and an olive branch greets
visitors to the Healthcare Management
Area, whilst a replica performs the same
task at the entrance to Dibit 2, a caffeteria
and refreshment area and a meeting
point for students and employees.
Oil and wine, used for real medication,
are the essence of charitable actions, as
stated in the parable:
But a certain Samaritan, as he
journeyed, came where he was: and
when he saw him, he had compassion
on him, and went to him, and bound up
his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and
set him on his own beast, and brought
him to an inn, and took care of him.

Around an ancient olive tree, all of 600
years old, there stands the Church of the
Olive Tree, a small, intimate place of
meditation and prayer next to the Central
Admissions area.

Madre della Vita
La cappella del San Raffaele, al piano -1, attigua al Pronto
Soccorso, un concentrato di raffigurazioni dello spirito del
San Raffaele:
Questa Chiesa-Cripta guarda ad oriente.
Infatti la gloria di Dio giunge dalla via orientale. Il suo rumore
rumore di grandi acque risanatrici (Ez 43,2).
() Tutta la iconografia anima i concetti del San Raffaele, la cui
stessa architettura venne ispirata dalle ali dellangelo.
Lacqua sorgiva fluisce sul pavimento granitico, fino allaltare
calice floreale, colmo di polline.
Le vetrate investite dalliride, vibrano di fotosintesi e di Ges
dominatore della malattia e della morte.
Ma c un fulcro che sintetizza e garantisce tutto ci: il grembo
della Madonna dentro il quale maturo il frutto: luomo-Dio,
verit e vita.

The Madonna
Mother of Life Chapel
The San Raffaele Chapel, on floor 1, near to the Accident and
Emergency area, is a concentration of symbols depicting the spirit
of San Raffaele:
This Church-Crypt looks towards the East.
And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way
of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and
the earth shined with his glory (Ezekiel 43,2).
() Iconography animates every concept of San Raffaele,
whose very structure is inspired by the wings of the angel.
Source water flows over the granite floor, right up to the floral
calyx altar, which is steeped in pollen.
In their collision with the rainbow, the glass panes vibrate with
photosynthesis and with Jesus the vanquisher of disease and
death.
But there is a fulcrum that simplifies and underwrites all this: it is
the Madonnas womb, within which the fruit is ripe: the
God-man, truth and life.
