Freiberg skyline, in the heart of the historic
city. The different functions performed by the
manor over the centuries have led to changes
in the historical substance and modification
of the identity of the place: erected in 1168
as a fortified and symbolically powerful po-
sition, becoming a ducal residence but then,
after centuries of decline becoming an arse-
nal, then a hospital, and then a granary. Like
other noble palaces and castles that, following
the deposition of monarchs, undergo transfor-
ruin awaiting refunctionalization, Freuden-
stein also, after a long period of neglect, in
project competition, won by the studio AFF
Architekten in Berlin. A ceremonial hand-
ing over of the keys on January 17th, 2008,
marked the end of the restructuring and reha-

The project by AFF moves between conser-
vation restoration and the implementation of
elements of intense contemporaneity. Putting
monolithic volumes of black concrete in the
existing space, and relating them with partic-
ulary expressive chromatic spaces, AFF ques-
tions the concept of the veracity of material.
From this perspective one can read the new
“dress” assigned to the “Neue Schlosshof” or

a new court of rectangular cut forms charac-
terized by a floor made of large yellow gran-
ite slabs that emerge recut from the surface,
recalling the crystal form of minerals. Two
black concrete volume extensions complete
the complex, characterized on the facades of
“Kirchenflügel” by “Hutzen”, a modern re-
interpretation of historic windows, elements
that resemble telescopes with extreme geom-
etry, that puncture the original skin, restruc-
tured to create a pattern that is repeated both
inside and outside. The conical element of the
new concept stabilizes the historic walls, em-
bracing a harmonious unity in the body of the
castle and interacting with the design of the
floor of the court.
The tower that dominates the complex, once
the room of the Saxon princes, assumes the
role of administrative space for the “Saxon
Mining Archive.” A central foyer works as an
atrium for the reception area, reading area
and exhibition space.
A few pieces of white furniture complete an
atmosphere of concentration and work that,
however, does not omit accents of extreme el-
egance. In contrast, there are three peculiar
areas that interject themselves for the use of
color as well as form: the atrium of the adminis-
trative offices is tinged with green and ribbons
of light, a yellow herringbone patterned wall
is a place for the transmission and selection of
archival documentation, while the reception
and technical assistance area is purple.
