If, When, Unless

► If (=se)
Esprime una congettura: qualcosa di certo, probabile o possibile.
- If you put an ice cube under the sun, it melts
- If you go out without a sweater, you will get cold
- If you go out tonight, you might see Julia

► When (=quando)
Esprime una certezza.
- When the sun is really high, the temperature rises.
- When you see Julia, give me a call.

► Unless (=a meno che)

Esprime una certezza o una probabilità (in una frase al negativo)
- Unless you take the next train, you won’t get home in time.
- You can’t go to the theatre unless you bought a ticket.

If vs When
Nello Zero Conditional la parola if può, in genere, essere sostituita dalla
parola when senza cambiare il significato della frase.
- If the temperature of the water rises, it boils.
→ When the temperature of the water rises, it boils

If NOT vs Unless
Nel First Conditional possiamo sostituire la struttura if… not con la parola
unless senza cambiare il significato della frase.
- If we don’t hurry up, we won’t finish this project in time.
→ Unless we hurry up, we won’t finish the project in time.
