IL PERIODO IPOTETICO INGLESE

In inglese esistono 4 tipi di periodi ipotetici:

1. Il periodo ipotetico generale o zero conditional

2. Il periodo ipotetico di primo tipo o first conditional
3. Il periodo ipotetico di secondo tipo o second conditional
4. Il periodo ipotetico di terzo tipo o third conditional

Periodo ipotetico generale o zero conditional: si usa per riferirsi a fatti che sono generalmente veri e il cui
risultato è sempre certo.

IF + Present Simple + Present Simple

If I eat too many cherries, I feel sick (può non essere vero per tutti, ma lo è per me; infatti, ogni volta che
mangio troppe ciliege sto male)

Periodo ipotetico di primo tipo o first conditional: si usa per parlare di una possibile condizione futura e del
suo probabile risultato.

IF + Present Simple + will/won’t + verbo (forma base)

If we don’t hurry, we will miss the train

If I get home late, my mother will get angry

 Spesso si usa il First Conditional per fare promesse, minacce e anche per trattare e/o accordarsi

If I meet Christopher, I’ll call you straight away (promessa)

If you behave like that again, you’ll be punished (minaccia)

If you pass all your exams, I’ll buy you a new bike (accordo)

Periodo ipotetico di secondo tipo o second conditional: si usa per riferirci a una situazione fittizia o
improbabile e immaginarne il risultato.

IF + Past Simple + would + verbo (forma base)

If my sister studied harder, she would pass her exams (ma mia sorella studia poco)

If people didn’t use their cars, there wouldn’t be so much pollution (ma continuano a usare le auto)

If I didn’t have to work, I would spend my time sunbathing (ma non potendomelo permettere, devo
continuare a lavorare)
  Dopo if si può usare were al posto di was (usato più nell’inglese colloquiale) con I/she/he/it

If I were the President, I would increase the salaries

If she were a good cook, I would ask her to cook me a Mexican meal

 L’espressione If I were you (se fossi in te) è spesso usata per dare consigli

If I were you, I would give up smoking

Today is your dad’s birthday. If I were you, I would buy him a box of chocolates

Periodo ipotetico di terzo tipo o third conditional: si usa per riferirsi a ciò che sarebbe avvenuto se
un’azione fosse stata diversa da ciò che è stata in realtà.

IF + Past Perfect + would + present perfect

If they hadn’t read the newspaper, they wouldn’t have known about the strike

If my car had started immediately, I would have arrived at work on time

Nota Bene:

In tutti i periodi ipotetici sopra descritti si possono invertire le due parti della frase:

If we don’t hurry, we won’t be able to finish our homework

(in questo caso, dopo la frase con IF si deve mettere la virgola)

We won’t be able to finish our homework if we don’t hurry

(in questo caso non si mette la virgola prima di IF)
