La  città  di  Alba  
 
Ciao  a  tutti!  Mi  chiamo  Lucia,  e  vi  parlo  di  Alba,  della  mia  città.  
 
Hi,  everyone!  My  name  is  Lucia,  and  I  am  going  to  talk  to  you  about  Alba  my  
hometown.  
 
Alba   è   una   città   che   si   trova   in   provincia   di   Cuneo,   in   Piemonte,   in   questa   zona.

con  la  Francia,  vicino  al  confine  con  la  Francia.    
 
Alba  is  a  town  that  is  located  in  the  province  of  Cuneo,  in  Piedmont,  in  this  area.

    It  is  located  in  the  north-­‐west  of  Italy,  at  the  border  with  France,  near  the  
  border  with  France.  
 
Non   è   una   città   grande,   è   una   cittadina   di   piccole   dimensioni,   infatti,   ha   circa  
trentamila  abitanti  e  si  trova  in  pianura,  anche  se  è  circondata  da  colline.  Le  Alpi  non  
sono  lontane,  e  anche  il  mare  non  è  lontano.    
 
It  is  not  a  large  city,  it  is  a  town  of  small  size.  Indeed,  it  has  approximately  
thirty-­‐thousand  residents,  and  it  is  located  on  a  plainh,  though  surrounded  by  
hills.  The  Alps  are  not  far,  and  the  sea  is  also  not  far.  
 
L’aspetto   di   Alba,   attualmente,   è   questo,   [veduta   di   Alba]   quindi   è   l’aspetto   di   una  
città   medievale,   ma   le   origini   di   Alba   sono   origini   Romane.     Infatti,   ai   tempi   dei

Alba’s  appearance,  presently,  is  this.  [view  of  Alba]  so  it  is  the  appearance  of  a  
medieval   town,   but   Alba’s   origins   are   Roman   origins.   As   a   matter   of   fact,   in   the  
Romans’  times,  it  was  [called]  “Alba  Pompeia”.  
 
Quello   che   si   vede   nella   diapositiva   è   il   campanile   della   cattedrale   di   Alba,   del  
Duomo.  Ci  sono  due  piazze  importanti  ad  Alba,  una  è  la  Piazza  del  Duomo,  che  è  la  
più  antica,  e  l’altra  è  la  Piazza,  cosiddetta  “Savona”,  che  è  più  moderna,  che  risale  alla  
fine  del  secolo  ottocento.  
 
What  can  be  seen  in  the  slide  is  Alba’s  cathedral’s  bell  tower  –  the  Duomo’s  bell  
tower.  There  are  two  important  squares  in  Alba,  one  is  the  Duomo’s  square,  
which  is  the  oldest,  and  the  other  is  the  so-­‐called  “Savona”  square,  which  is  
more  modern  –  which  dates  back  to  the  end  of  the  19th  century.

sabato.   Il   sabato   è   un   giorno   di   mercato:   c’è   un   mercato   molto   importante,   che   si  
svolge  in  tutte  le  vie  del  centro  della  città,  e  occupa  tutto  il  centro  cittadino.    
 
[Photo  of  the  Duomo’s  square]  This  is,  again,  the  Duomo’s  square,  but  as  seen  
on  a  Saturday.  Saturday  is  the  market  day:  there  is  a  very  important  market,  
which  occurs  in  all  the  streets  of  the  city’s  center,  and  occupies  all  of  the  city  
center.  
 
Come  si  vede  da  questa  immagine,  Alba  è  anche  famosa  per  le  sue  torri  medievali,  
infatti,  si  chiama  “la  città  dalle  cento  torri”,  anche  se,  attualmente,  rimangono  molto  
meno  di  cento  torri:  sono  quattro  torri  ancora  complete,  altre  sono  state  ribassate.  
Le   torri   sono,   appunto,   di   origine   medievale,   e   dimostravano   l’importanza   della  
famiglia  dei  mercanti.    
 
As  can  be  seen  from  this  image,  Alba  is  also  famous  for  its  medieval  towers.  As  a  
matter  of  fact,  it  is  called  “the  city  of  the  hundred  towers”,  although,  presently,  
much  less  than  one  hundred  towers  remain  [standing]:  four  are  the  towers  still  
complete,  others  have  been  lowered.  The  towers  are,  as  stated,  of  medieval  
origin,  and  demonstrated  the  importance  of  the  merchants’  family.

Alba.   Alba,   infatti,   è   molto   famosa   per   la   produzione   di   vini:   si   producono   vini,  
famosi  in  tutto  il  mondo,  come  il  Barolo,  il  Barbaresco,  il  Nebbiolo,  e  la  produzione  di  
vino  è  un  aspetto  economico  molto  importante  per  la  città.  Il  paesaggio  e  le  colline  
circostanti  sono  proprio  caratterizzate  dalle  viti,  coltivate  in  modo  molto  regolare.  
 
[Picture  of  the  hills]  This,  on  the  other  hand,  is  an  image  of  the  hills  that  are  
located  near  Alba.  Alba  is  indeed  very  famous  for  the  production  of  wine:  wines  
–  famous  in  the  whole  world  –  are  produced,  such  as  the  Barolo,  the  
Barbaresco,  the  Nebbiolo…  and  the  wine  production  is  a  very  important  
economic  aspect  for  the  city.  The  landscape  and  the  surrounding  hills  are  
actually  characterised  by  the  vines,  cultivated  in  a  very  regular  manner.

produzione   di   vino,   è   la   fabbrica   Ferrero,   che   produce   la   Nutella   (un   prodotto  
conosciuto  in  tutto  il  mondo),  che  costituisce  una  presenza  importante  sul  territorio.

Another  very  important  economic  activity,  other  than  the  wine  production,  is  
the  Ferrero  factory,  which  produces  Nutella  (a  product  known  in  the  whole  
world),  that  constitutes  an  important  presence  on  the  territory.    
 
Ad   Alba,   il   clima   è   freddo   d’inverno   e   piuttosto   caldo   d’estate.   Ci   sono   …   C’è  
un’alternanza  delle  quattro  stagioni;  la  primavera  è  anche  una  stagione  molto  bella,  
e   soprattutto   l’autunno,   quando   si   svolge   la   fiera   del   tartufo.   Il   tartufo   è   un   altro  
prodotto   del   territorio   di   Alba.   È   un   tubero   che   cresce   sotto   terra,   e   che   è   molto  
pregiato   per   la   cucina   locale,   internazionale   e   viene   anche   esportato   in   tutto   il  
mondo.    
 
In  Alba,  the  climate  is  cold  in  winter  and  relatively  warm  in  summer.  There  are  
…  There  is  an  alternation  of  the  four  seasons:  Spring  is  a  very  beautiful  season,  
too,  and  especially  autumn,  when  the  truffle  fair  takes  place.  The  truffle  is  
another  product  of  Alba’s  territory.  It’s  a  tuber  that  grows  underground,  and  
that  is  very  valuable  for  the  local  and  international  cuisines,  and  is  also  
exported  all  over  the  world.  
 
A   ottobre   si   svolge   la   fiera   del   tartufo,   e   si   protrae   per   tutto   il   mese   di   ottobre.  
Durante   le   domeniche,   ci   sono   attività   commerciali,   ci   sono   rappresentazioni  
storiche   medievali,   e   ad   Alba   affluiscono   turisti   non   soltanto   italiani,   ma   anche   da  
tutto  il  mondo,  soprattutto  dalla  Germania:  turisti  tedeschi  e  turisti  svizzeri,  o  anche  
francesi   che,   con   un   viaggio   piuttosto   breve,   possono   vedere   e   gustare   i   prodotti  
locali   perché   si   tratta   soprattutto   di   una   zona   molto   conosciuta   per   i   prodotti  
enologici  e  per  la  gastronomia.    
 
The  truffle  fair  takes  place  in  October,  and  it  protracts  itself  all  throughout  the  
month  of  October.  On  Sundays,  there  are  commercial  activities,  historical  and  
medieval  representations,  and  tourists  –  not  only  Italian  tourists,  but  from  all  
over  the  world,  especially  from  Germany  –  crowd  to  Alba:  German  tourists  and  
Swiss  tourists,  or  also  French,  who,  with  a  relatively  short  journey,  can  see  and  
taste  the  local  products  because  it  [Alba]  is  an  area  that  is  especially  known  for  
its  wine  products  and  its  gastronomy.  
 
Ci   sono,   infatti,   moltissimi   ristoranti   (alcuni   ristoranti   hanno   anche   il  
riconoscimento   delle   “tre   stelle   Michelin”)   e   quindi,   dal   punto   di   vista   della  
gastronomia,  è  una  zona  molto  conosciuta.    
 
There  are,  as  a  matter  of  fact,  many  restaurants  (some  also  have  the  three  
Michelin  star  recognition)  and  thus,  from  the  gastronomical  point  of  view,  it  is  a  
very  well-­‐known  area.
