INTRODUCTION
And I’ll start by saying that I’m very happy to join this fine company here
to discuss the question of the day
RESTAGING OPERA IN AND FOR THE PRESENT
Which in my mind is very connected to a lecture that Stéphane
gave a few years ago, titled POURQUOI L’OPÉRA AUJOURD’HUI?
WHY OPERA TODAY?
1
WHY OPERA TODAY?
I vividly remember our first creative meetings on PARSIFAL
We started with the same question.
WHY COULD POSSIBLY MEAN PARSIFAL TO TODAY’S AUDIENCE?
HOW CAN WE MAKE THE PIECE RELEVANT TODAY?
HOW CAN IT RESONATE IN A THEATRE A 150 YEARS AFTER IT WAS CREATED
PERCHÉ L'OPERA OGGI?
Ricordo perfettamente i nostri primi incontri creativi su PARSIFAL
Abbiamo iniziato con la stessa domanda.
COSA POTREBBE SIGNIFICARE/che valore potrebbe assumere PARSIFAL PER IL PUBBLICO
DI OGGI?
COME POSSIAMO RENDERE L'OPERA ATTUALE?
COME PUÒ RISUONARE IN UN TEATRO 150 ANNI DOPO LA SUA CREAZIONE?
2
NOW I’D LIKE TO SAY A FEW WORDS ON MY ARTISTIC BACKGROUND…
…and on how I ended up directing operas.
Now that I think it is so remarkable
But because it will provide context and perspective
to whatever I have to say on today’s theme
3
And I loved it
Very soon I found myself addicted to live form
To the rush of adrenaline before any performance
To the waves of sounds coming from the orchestra pit
To the wall of energy coming from the chorus
And to the source of all music :
the human voice,
Soloist singing right in front of you
And I became more and more interested in direct lineage between cinema and opera
Cinema is born from opera.
They are parent and child.
They share a common DNA.
4
And they served in different eras the same function.
5
Through the revolutionary work of artists like
Schoenberg, Berg, Stravinski and Cocteau, Weill and Brecht…
Came an amazing time of experiments, of questioning, of searching.
Opera had no choice but to reposition itself
And had to become something that cinema was not
Attraverso il lavoro rivoluzionario di artisti come
Schoenberg, Berg, Stravinski e Cocteau, Weill e Brecht...
So again,
It’s no coincidence that I first directed Stravinski
And Wagner soon after
RIchard Wagner at a different time and in his own way
wandered in in the outskirts of the operatic mainstream
Which appealed to me as a filmmaker.
His work exists in its own non-cinematic non-naturalistic space
If you see what I mean…
The whole concept Gesamtkunstwerk – Of Art Total – immediately felt very familiar
It is in fact the very foundation of today’s cinema.

BACK TO OUR QUESTION
WHY OPERA TODAY?
The first answer to come to my mind is:
Because Opera will never die!
7
And here is one reason for that.
SINGING
THE HUMAN VOICE
8
I would also like to propose that
quintessentially, fundamentally
Singing is music… Is all music.
All music derives from that voice.
All music instrument is one way or another an emulation of the human voice.
Vorrei anche suggerire che
fondamentalmente
umana.
9
Because we are hopeful optimistic animals.
(Mariella would say that that makes me a disciple of Jean-Jacques Rousseau)
We tried to convince ourselves that technology can fill the gap of our absence.
That a Zoom meeting can replace a dinner conversation
That a camera transmission can replace a live performance
10
I thought about that quite a bit a lot when I staged two Cirque du Soleil shows
About the impossibility to film danger for instance.
And danger is also very present at the opera
Opera singers are like trapezists and tightrope walkers
We can never be sure if they will reach the other end of an aria in one piece
But when a singer does make it alive, it feels like the most miraculous victory
And to fully experience that victory, there is no other choice but to be in the room
SO
OPERA WILL NEVER DIE
THE LIVE FORM CAN’T BE REPLACED
But it is transforming
And all of us, here, today
are the agents of that transformation.
QUINDI
L'OPERA NON MORIRÀ MAI
LA PERFORMANCE DAL VIVO NON PUÒ ESSERE SOSTITUITA
Ma si sta trasformando
E tutti noi, qui, oggi
siamo gli artefici di questa trasformazione.
Playing Wagner today is quite a different experience than what it was in the 18 th century
And I’m not talking about the physical dimension of opera and theatre here
Yes, we have brought lots of new technologies to the stage
But this is the superficial and marginal aspect of the transformation
Live theatre is live theatre and no matter how many computers
we bring in the room it essentially remains an experience that
is very similar to what audiences experienced in the 14th or 15th century
11
The real transformation, the one that really matters
The one we discussing TODAY
Has more to do with the way we communicate with each other.
Brain to brain.
Composers, librettists, directors and the people sitting in the dark.
The audience that sat in the Metropolitan Opera on March 2nd 2013 to
hear Jonas Kaufman sing Parsifal was quite different from the
audience who attended the creation in Bayreuth, in 1882.
Since then, the world has changed. We went through wars and rebellions,
We lived the internet revolution and we watch Netflix.
Da allora, il mondo è cambiato. Siamo passati attraverso guerre e ribellioni,
Today, the audience who shows up at the MET to see Parsifal premiere
is shaped by a completely different ideological landscape
and new storytelling conventions

My work as a director is to take what Wagner meant and felt
and lived a hundred fifty years ago and make it resonate and shine today.
In the delirious context of our era
13
This is why Opera is still relevant today.
This is why we need to re-staging opera in and for the present.
Knowing that
Our mission is to position Opera in today’s world
And to make it resonate in the fine brains of our audience.
