Abstract
The famed golden plaques inscribed in Etruscan and Phoenician were brought to light 50 years ago at
Pyrgi/Santa Severa, the ancient port of the powerful Etruscan city of Cerveteri (Rome, Italy). Since then,
they have been the object of countless analyses both by etruscologists and semitists, as well as historians
of classic religions and scholars of the history of the ancient Mediterranean. This vast amount of
information has been critically screened by the author of this survey and arranged in a bibliographical
grid focusing on the span 1994-2014. The titles have been organized into 10 paragraphs dealing with
various topics ranging from archaeology to linguistics, from cultural history to the socio-politic history
of antiquity.
Keywords
Pyrgi, Etruscan language, Phoenician language, golden tablets, inscriptions, bibliography, ar-
chaic Mediterranean.

1. Drawing up methods
Since setting up a mere bibliographical review cannot be considered a neutral matter
from a critical point of view, it seems suitable to make clear the methods and the
criteria that guided the Author of the present bibliography in collecting the data. The
period taken into account is the twenty-year period 1994-2014 (with a few exceptions),
the former date referring to the publication by Mauro Cristofani of the entry “Pirgi” in
the Bibliografia Topografica della Colonizzazione Greca in Italia e nelle isole
tirreniche, and the latter to the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Pyrgi tablets.
As far as the previous period is concerned, the thirty-year period 1964-1994, the
reader can refer to the periodical bibliographical reviews published by the tablets’
discoverers and other scholars (§ 3).
Setting up this bibliography, I have adopted the criteria stated by Giovanni Colonna,
Mauro Cristofani and Giovanni Garbini in their survey published in 1966 (cf. § 3),
which gave preference to works by reliable and accredited authors, published only in
highly qualified scientific journals. Accordingly, amateurish works – like those
published on one’s own – as well as merely informative and popular writings have been
ruled out, especially when the mention of the Pyrgi tablets was cursory. For a broader
view also including some unorthodox titles, the reader can go through the
bibliographical periodical surveys published in the Italian journal Studi Etruschi
(section V, Linguistics and Epigraphy; sub “A”, Etruscan).
As far as scientific content is concerned, I have taken into consideration not only the
works dealing directly with the Pyrgi tablets and – more generally – the Pyrgi
discoveries, but also some contributions focusing on different topics, that nevertheless
contain some useful references to the golden tablets. These references have been taken
into account especially when the tablets have been discussed by scholars in the context
of complex argumentation, using well-constructed arguments (for instance, discussion
of sacred prostitution, Thefarie Velianas’ institutional charge, the meaning of some
words, and so on). In that case, in order to help the reader, I have put the article’s exact
reference between brackets at the end of the entry. Moreover, I thought it is useful also
to point out the contributions including in their turn a wide bibliography.
The bibliographical selection – which doesn’t aim to be complete – is based on the
Author’s acquaintance with the topic, especially on the Etruscan côté, as well as on the
direct accessibility to him of the huge literature devoted to the site of Pyrgi. The survey
includes also the titles of the articles published in the present issue of SEL. In order to
quickly address the reader to the typology and the content of the materials gathered up,
I have distributed the entries into paragraphs, within which the titles are ordered in
alphabetical order (§ 4-7, 10). Yet, I have sometimes (§ 2, 3, 8-9) followed a different
(chronological) criterion, since it seemed more important to me to give the reader an
exact idea of the temporal sequence of the research. Even though the organization into
paragraphs may seem a bit forced and artificial – because each contribution could be
certainly included in different sections – I considered that the advantages of this
organization would outalight the disadvantages.
The present introductory paragraph aside, the bibliographical material has been
organized into 9 sections (2-10), which can be described as follows. Paragraphs 2-4
allow us to retrieve the basic information on the Pyrgi golden tablets: they include the
SEL 32-33, 2015-2016: 239-250 241
editio princeps, the standard repertoires, some grammars, the previous bibliographical
surveys and a small selection of addenda relating to the period 1964-1994.
Paragraphs 5-7 include works dealing with the tablets and their historical and
archaeological context (the sanctuary of Pyrgi), published between 1994 and 2014, as
well as articles focusing on different themes which are nonetheless relevant to the
matter, according to the criteria described above.
I have always tried to point out the general subject of the screened work (history,
religion, society, politics and so on). The final paragraphs (8-10) are devoted to
contributions that deal synthetically with the tablets (short texts in exhibition
catalogues, encyclopedic entries) and to miscellaneous works by individual or
collective authors, not included in the previous sections.
