Engineering Building
with James Gowan
This building comprises large
ground-level workshops and a
vertical block which consists of
office and laboratory towers,
lecture theatres, lift and staircase
shafts. Each element has an
appropriate expression: glass
walls for the administration
tower, horizontal windows for the
research tower, brickwork for the
service tower and concrete units
for the flue. The industrial roof
of the workshops is turned
diagonally across the plan to
bring in light.

Number 1 Poultry
in collaborazione con Michael
Wilford
completato dallo studio Michael
Wilson and Partners
Ledificio situato nel cuore di
Londra e ospita uffici, negozi e
spazi pubblici. Il progetto
Number 1 Poultry era vincolato
dal tessuto viario preesistente e
dagli edifici storici circostanti.
Questi edifici storici in pianta
sono simmetrici, bench su
strada presentino uno schema
libero. In risposta, Number 1
Poultry si sviluppa intorno a un
asse centrale longitudinale, con
facciate analoghe verso la Queen
Victoria Street e la Poultry.
Laltezza del parapetto e la
suddivisione verticale delle
facciate in parti distinte
risponde anchessa agli edifici
circostanti.
Number 1 Poultry
with Michael Wilford
completed by Michael Wilford
and Partners
The building is situated in the
heart of the city of London, and
accommodates offices, shops and
public spaces. The design for
Number 1 Poultry was
determined by the existing street
patterns and the surrounding
historic buildings. These historic
buildings are symmetrical in
plan although they face into an
informal street pattern. To
respond, Number 1 Poultry is
planned about a central
longitudinal axis with similar
faades towards Queen Victoria
Street and Poultry. The parapet
height and vertical division of
the faades into distinct parts
also correspond to the
surrounding buildings.
