Schauspielhaus a Berlino
Schlobrcke a Berlino
Schlossbrke, Berlin
The preexisting Hundelbrke was a plain wooden bridge, situated on the broadest and loveliest street in the city; it looked pretty poor compared with the imposing Arsenal and the Royal Palace. Schinkel erected a three-arch bridge , suitably linking Opera House Square and Lustgarten; he made the new representational street, Unter den Linden, into a unified, finished configuration. The continuity of the via triumphalis as far as the cathedral features a sequence of statues standing on high bases, which became a sort of unified decorative plan for the whole street.

Schauspielhaus, Berlin
The schemes spatial conditions were determined to a large extent by the morphology of the plaza, within the Friedrichstadt grid (1688) and bounded by the peristyle of the two French and German churches (Gontard 178085). Moreover , the architect was asked to reuse the walls that had survived the fire that razed Langhans Theater (1800-1802). But that was not all: the terribly complex layout called for a theater and auditoriums for concerts, besides rooms for parties. At the same time, Schinkel worked to redefine the architectural space of the square and to transform the traditional Baroque theater typology. The novel goal was a Classical structure, with a semicircular auditorium and shallow painted backdrops for the scenery. This double purpose was visible in the curtain painted by Schinkel for the opening uniting the theaters architecture and the urban scene. The solution was a unified building whose distinct volumes express the complexity of the internal structure outside. The auditorium is in the center , it is on the same axis as the tympanum and the peristyle which face the plaza in order to recreate a unified design embracing the two churches. The ancient option is also visible in the architectural style which must attain Greek forms and constructions as much as possible. This explains the preference for a column-and-beam tectonic and expressive system. The building, damaged during the war , was rebuilt by converting the interior to a single auditorium. Humboldtschlo a Tegel
Humboldtschloss, Tegel
In 1820 W. von Humboldt retired to his old Tegel home, where he intended to combine his dwelling and the exhibition of ancient artifacts collected in Italy. This commission gave Schinkel his first opportunity to design a house set in the woods and lakes on the outskirts of Berlin. The old house was entirely maintained in the new one and is recognizable in the front with a pitched roof and the corner bay-windows. The preexisting tower was repeated on all four corners to stress the castlelike traits; the simple beam structure on the garden front makes it villa like, too.

Schinkelpavillon a Berlino

Schinkelpavillon, Berlin
This was conceived as a Summer House and represents Schinkels transposition of the Chiatamonte Villa near Naples where the king had stayed. ... It is an isolated house, surrounded by an upperstory balcony that leads everywhere. There is a loggia in the center of each side where one can stay, depending on the weather and hour. (A. von Wolzogen) Schinkel offered a nearly square plan (18x16.4 m) with a volume whose form and proportions are clearly defined. Only the continuous balcony and the loggias on every side relate to the outdoors. Schinkel designed even the tiniest detail of the interiors. Kavalierhaus
It stands on Pfaueninsel, remodeled by Lenn beginning in 1822 as part of the romantic transformation of the landscape by building diverse elements. Schinkels scheme fit into the same picturesque context; he redesigned the facade of a demolished High Gothic house purchased by the heir to the throne in Danzig. Schinkel built a kind of two-tower castle, with the tallest one accommodating the ancient fragments on six floors. The rest of the structure imitates the style through simplified forms.

Nikolaikirche a Potsdam
Four churches for Berlins northern suburbs: Johanneskirche, Paulskirche, Nazarethkirche, Elisabethkirche
These four smallish churches (seating 800-1000) are extremely measured in their plan and ornaments; they manifest Schinkels commitment in the field of sacred architecture and his careful experiments in typology variations. They share the same configuration a room between the end units yet they are clearly customized.
Nikolaikirche, Potsdam
Director of works L. Persius Within sacred architecture in the ancient style this is a major scheme, adopting Classical typologies and elements. The plan is square, with a Greek cross and four arches carrying a dome. The superimposition of pure volumes (cube, cylinder and hemisphere) is highly simple architecturally and in the decorations. Construction went slowly, with many changes. The dome was erected by Persius and Stler to the designs of Schinkel in 1843-49; four corner towers were added. The white and gold interior spreads the daylight uniformly. POTSDAM Am alten Markt

Villa

House
This too, is the refurbishment of a preexisting complex. Schinkel maintained the plan, but transformed it substantially. He raised the piano nobile, distinguishing it from the service floor; he lowered the roof, hiding it behind an attic. Also, the architect redesigned the elevations in a rigorous style. The entrance is on the side, not the front, marked by a pergola that runs along three sides of the courtyard. On its walls are antique pieces. Rural architecture and culture unite in the framework of the natural landscape.

Casino

House
with Ludwig Persius As in Glienicke, Schinkel was called in to work on an existing house (by J. Boumann, 1746). Maintaining as much of the former structure as possible, raised the piano nobile on a base containing the services and concealed the roof; only the central facade projection was kept. This feature was stressed on the entrance front which has fewer openings by means of a monumental portal. The more open and luminous garden side has a Doric four-column pronaos. The building is wholly symmetric, except for the semicylindrical element projecting on the north side. The landscaping is an integral part of the project: the pronaos overlooks the garden, thanks to an embankment with a brick retaining wall on the south. In the north is a slope offering a view of Lenns park. The east perimeter wall is semicircular and linked to the house by a pergola. The interior are conceived in bourgeois simplicity and masterfully decorated.
Grosse Neugierde
This is a circular belvedere placed at the southwest corner of Glieniche Park, at the beginning of the Potsdam Bridge (rebuilt in 1831-1834 to the designs of Schinkel). A rotunda of Corinthian columns, accurate reproductions of the Classical patterns and enhanced with refined decorations, supports a copy of the Monument to Lisicrate in Athens (343 B.C.). This is a sort of manifesto of the Classical-Romantic spirit underpinning the transformation of these sites.
Country House
This is the conversion of a small structure on the banks of Havel Lake within an estate recently bought by Prince Karl; he commissioned Lenn for the landscaping. This is an H-shaped volume featuring a linear plan and rigorous decorations; it sits on a high base connected to two wings of pergolas. Another lower pergola runs along the lake shore. The architecture interplays with nature by means of an able alternating of solids and voids, arcades and open stairs that make the vegetation an integral, necessary part of the composition.
Babelsberg Castle
with L. Persius and H. Strack This was Prince Wilhelms summer home; he imposed the style, English Gothic, and the composition. The latter is irregular and picturesque, providing a splendid view of Lenns park and the Havel lakes, opposite Glieniche and Potsdam. Schinkel constructed an exceptionally articulated plan featuring a sequence of spaces differing in form and size which generated a composition of volumes of various heights. Despite the stylistic trappings, this plan boasts a very clear typology and formal completeness.
