Buill between 1530 and I 6 10, the church is probably a Renaissance work by Giovanni Beretta of Brissago, to whom is also attributed the design of the Madonna di Ponte church in Brissago, restored in 1952 by Rino T ami and Peppo Brivio. An historical study revealed the need to remove the traces of modifications to the church effected during the 1800s in order to reveal the original structure and ~store the .Renaissance spatial proportions. The restoration was not viewed merely as the recove ry of the anti qu e parts, but also as th e adaptation of the spaces of the chunch in keeping with modem liturgical principles,

The apse was restored to its Original size, the roof reconstructed at a lower level and the oculum of the cupola was reopened; the organ was restored, reduced to a minimum encumbrance and placed in the first lateral niche, making it possible to reopen the seriiana in the facade. The openings in the cupola and the oculi of the southem facade were restored: the stucco decorations on the granite structure were removed, and the external and intemal walls painted white. A new positioning was created for the altar, the ambo and the choir-stall,

The objective of the competitlon entry was to create a master plan capable of translating the programme of spaces and the construction schedule into a system of formally complete spatial relations. This system is designed to permit the greatest possible fiexibilttr with the relations (spatial, functional, tech nitaJ, of distribution, et-c') specified. stata elaborata
The solution proposed was developed wi thin the constraints and limits of the competition guidelines and the general regulatory plan. These limitations were explicitly assumed as real data regarding an existing situation. as ~~planatoIY parameters of the actual conditions under which the territory is organised and managed. Based on the positioning and irfrastructural system proposed by the regulatory plan, the proposal aims at achieving the following main objectives: - the [ormation, through the construction of a p rimary stru ctu re (th e admin istrative '"spine") of an alte mati ve urban space. in contrast with the rapport of full volumes and open spaces proposed in the .surrounding projected restructuring; - the definition of open spaces as "designed" parts of the city, rather than as residual spaces after construction; - the separation and charactcnsauon on different scales of pedestrian and vehicular traffic; - the creation of a system of relations
betwe en th e histo rical city and th e administrative centre (conceived as the arurnating poles of the new city as a whole) which, beyond the functional factors of transport, proposes a new way of utilising the urban landscape For the user. The solution developed is structured .by four principal elements: I. The administrative spine. generated by the east-west pedestrian link which constitutes the pnncipal artery of the svstern of walkways above the street. and the railroad, 1 he administrative buildings flank • this passageway, formmg a sort of gallery. and can be constructed in separate. autonomous phases. 2. The municipal offices. directly linked to the central pedestrian route at a 60 degree angle, orrning a backdrop to the east for the open spaces of he park. 3. The residences. organised on four storeys in a quad above the motorway access. directly Iinke d to th e park. ~. The competition guidelines died for Lhe design of 40 apartments of different sizes in the Alpine village of Celerina. The solution proposed, a linear block burlt along the traces of an ancient path, is" designed to create a limit for lhe sprawling edification which is graaually invading the fluvial plain, while at the same time creating an opell space in the direction ofthe historical town nucleus. The village is composed of two distinct parts: Crasta and Celerina, each with its own church, with the imposing volume of a hotel from the tum of the century in between. The project thus proposes a third entity, oriented toward Lhe Romanesque church of Crasta, The typology proposed IS also composed of two distinct parts: the Lower with vertical access and the living rooms, and the volume of the bedrooms above the entrance portico, formed by a series of cells of equal size with a wide corridor with niches. A bridge connects the two parts of the edifice. The pornco below, situated on an elevation of the terrain, offer'S the visitor a vast panoramic view of the plams, The internal arrangement of the individual apartments makes it possible for each of them to have a rapport with ail of the elements of this extraordinary landscape, The towers are in solid masonry, as IS the portico. while the volume of the bedrooms IS a wooden

Ponte di Golino
1976

This design was developed as a counterproposal within the framework of consulting work for the Landscape Commission The partial collapse of the bridge over the Melezza, river had Imposed the construction of a ernporary bridge, ulilislng the I'emaining fragment extending to the other bank of the river, Later, the roads department of the canton drew up a deSign fOI-a new bridge [0 be built beside the ruins of the old one, In this design-the original width of the bridge, },6 metres, was expanded to 9.5 metres, to comply With erroneously abstract criteria, The first crmcrsrn of th is design is precisely the fact that excessive priority is given to problems of traffic, overlooking other
factors, especially architectural and landscape values. Actually, traffic in the Centovalli area is divided into two completely different sectors: the original valley road - of which the Golino bridge is a part - which follows the topographical irregutaoties of the terrain, and the more recen , rapid mad, which passes above the settlements, Any attempt to sPceedtraffic along the old mad creates a contradiction with its physical structure. The second crrticisrn regards the formal co nse q uen ces of til is excess ive Iy tra fficoriented conception of the bridge, The widening and raising of the bridge surface would, in fact. lead to the destruction of an entire series of archi tectonic elements which
create extremely delicate and detailed relationships of equi Iibriurn with the site: toward Golino, a small nucleus of buildings, clearly defined by a wall. with a small stone tower, in a slightly rotated posi jon; on the opposite bank. a chapel which is placed prcosely in a bridgehead position. The counterproposal is based on an in en ion not to provide Golino with just any bridge, but with its bridge, In order that the new structure [an becom e a Ian d rn d rk fa r th e inhabitants of the town, like the Former' one, Where the official design preserved the ruins of the bridge while demolishing all of the architectural presences of the context. the new proposal removes the physical remains ofthe old bridge while presel)iing
all the elements of the context, which represenl the true value to bo'sefeguarded The new structure reflects the lightness 0 r the onginal bridge, With a widtn of only 3 metres, and a pedestrian bridge below. Although never approved. this counterproposal was useful In limiting the damage caused by the official project.the reduction in width and height of the final VCI"SIOn as led to the preservation of the h buildings and the surrounding wall, while unlortunately the chapel was dernolished. lronically, perhaps. it has been replaced by a .speed limit sign,

The houseiasituated outside of the original nucleus of th€: village. The.deslgn is based on two fundamental choices: the positioning of the edifice in keeping wit!'! the orthogonal matrix of the old centre of the village, rather than parallel to the new, peripheral construction: and the.extension, right into the house itself of the stone wall which borders tile path when leay~g the village. This definition of the path of entry directly connects the house to the last small square of the village. The .idea of the path guides the internal layout of the house: having climbed the granite staircase, within a very high space one reaches the liying mom, from which a large"expanse of glass provides a view of the entire village.

Restoration
1977-84
A study of the various phases of the construction of the sanctuarv made it possible to identify. in architectural terms. the key element for the comprehension of the site. and thus to develop a design strategy. This key element ISthe courtyard of the complex. a space of relations rather than an edifice. From the origins of the monastery until the 19th century the courtyard, in fact. served as a. space of relation. All of the roads which lead, from above or below, to the church. which is situated at the summit of a bare cliff. converged on the courtyard, the last part of the itinerary before reaching the church. At the-beginning this was a simple arrival square, spatially defined by the ilTeguIar 0 reo graphy of th e site. Later. Iittl e by-little, new contents were,MJded: the primitive Pieta Chapel, the Hbuse of the Father, the Von Roll Chapel, the 17thcentury steps" the Chapel of the Holy Spirit with. beside it, the Chapel of the Visit to Emmaus. and finally the covered staircase
with the large arches above the courtyard Construction toward the end of the I 800s completely reversed the situation, definitively isolating the courtyard from the access routes: and leading to the situation of almost complete abandon which preceded the resto rati 0 n. Th is inte rp retation pe rm itted to identify the problem to be resolved in essential terms: how to propose the works of rest oration an d t ransform anon necessary to accomplish what the 19th-century project was not able to do, namely to give the intemaJ courtyard anew significance. The restoration The idea of the Capuchins was to create a study centre operl to the public. ThiS Implied a new approach with respect to the dosed concept of the-monastery proposed by the works of the I BOOs. his enabled to reverse T the situation once again, restoring the courtyard to its original role as a primary space of relatioos_ The project calls for the foUowing operations:
- the removal of all of the structures built inside the co uItyard: - the repositioning of the access to a higher level, by demolishing the walkways, creating a new square: - the creation of a new passageway to guarantee an improved rapport between the lower access and the-courtyard: - resto rati 0 n of the vari 0 us e Iem .0 nts facing onto the courtyard. with an improved deflnitlon of roles (the Von Roll Chapel as oratory, the House of the Father as an exhibition space for the ornaments and vestrne nts 0 f the sanctuary, th e Pieta Chapel); - the reopening of the arcades of the 1500s portico, re-establishing the original rapport between the courtyard and the valley; - the reopening of the arcades of the steps leading to the church, to establish a visual rapport between the courtyard and the different access routes: - the restoration of all ofthe facades inside
the courtyard. These operations combined make it possible to architecturally redefine this space as a primary place of relations for the entire monumental complex. The upperlevel, which is directly connected to the church, becomes the monastery with all of the necessary services. while the top floor becomes the study centre open to the public. For the church, the principal operation involves the roofing. Having accepted the notion of the restoration of the edifice with all of its components, a new arrangement For the roof has been attempted, in order to reveal the detailed arrangement of the parts which were previously all included beneath a sloping roof The underlining of all of the parts, including the central nave, the apse and the chancel, both, built at the tum of the century, creates, in the interior, a primary element within a highly heterogeneous structure, revealing the various additions made over the centuries, in a well-balanced equilibrium.

This project for the expansion of the Zurich statl 0 n prese nts ltse If as an i m po rtant opportunity for the spatial and distribution reorganisation of an entire part of the city, Among the main objectives of the project there is the need to create a connection betweeq the two qu'a:rters of the city separated by the railroad line, In order to formulate an architectur-al proposal capable of respondrng to the problems posed, and compatible with interpretation of the city, this it was legitimate, and even necessary, to _go beyond The limits imposed by the '~ompetition guidelines, The project is composed of three distmct operations: - the bridge connerti ng the Sihlpost and the quarter to the north of Limrnatstrasse: .; the parking platform: - development aJong Zollstrasse. An analysis of the site revealed that all of the buildings located at the foot of the hill and which. over the centuries, have completely filled in the circumference of the hill. are not public in character, but have small shops on the ground floor and residences above. All of the pu bl ic burldiIlgS of th e city are located beyond this ring,
The project proposes a completion of the gap in the ring, the result of demolition which took place during this century, with similar functions and typologies This decision led to the design of a triangular piazza which places the existing buildings or low architectural quality in the background, and of a large open space between the new edification and the castle. The remaimng part of the original walls, once an element of separation, thus takes on a new role as a historical trace, becoming an element of uni~cat ion for the two parts of the city.

The project is based on an interpretation of the oreography of the city and of the role played by the two bridges in the spatial definition of the entrance to the city: the old bndge at the level of the river, protected by defensive edification (a tower), and the new viaduct built dur:ing the 1800s at a higher level, in direct rapport with the main street of the city. To clarify the present situation, the project proposes the elimination of the sloping streets which connect tile two bridges, and a redefinition, wrlh differentiated architectural means, of the two bridgeheads, The 19th· century bridge is transformed into an automobile terminal, with an underground parting area for 120 cars, topped by a semicircular piazza-belvedere, The old bridge with its towel- is fl-amed by aU-shaped

The U.shaped edifice. with porticoes at the ground level for a restaurant and shops, calls for duplex apartments on the first and second storeys and exhibition and collective spaces on the third floor, Access to the latter is provided through the old tower, which lhe project proposes to gut in order to create an exhibition space reached through the atrium of the elevators and stairs.

1983 concorso; 10 premio 1993-94 realizzazione (on B_ jenni

The basic idea behind the design for the competition was the creation of a square connectede to the Bahnhofstrasse and of a park behind the church. In the park a daycare centre is located, as an element analogous to the villas which characterise this zone of the city. The square united different pre-existing and designed edifices within a coherent urban system: - the old chapel freed of attached buildings and restored with the addition of a new steeple marking the point of the square; - the existing church with its steeple, which costituted the element of closure of the square; - the parish community house. linked to the church by means of a portico; - the residential building along the Bahnhofstrasse.
In I 984 the design was re-elaborated in keeping with a new. reduced programme: having eliminated the daycare centre and the residences, the new project included only the large multifunctional hall, meeting room and a dining hall. grouped within an l-shapel edifice forming a SOli of "cloister" connected to the church. Access is provided for the internal square by means of steps placed in alignment with the steeple. or- directly from the parking area behind the church. The portico places all 'the entrances of the various buildings in relation (church. parish house, foyer of the multifunctional hall, meeting rooms and dining hall). After many delays due to bureaucratic problems. construction of the design finally began in 1993.
