1.1 LARTICOLO DETERMINATIVO
Larticolo determinativo the, e corrisponde allitaliano il/lo/la/le/gli; nella lingua inglese rimane invariato, cio lo si usa sia per tutti i generi, che al singolare ed al plurale: the cat (il gatto); the cats (i gatti); the boy (il ragazzo); the girl (la ragazza). Questo articolo usato:

Youre the only one who thinks so! (Sei il solo a pensarlo!)
1.2 LARTICOLO INDETERMINATIVO
Esistono dei casi in cui le preposizioni possono andare alla fine della frase, ad esempio nelle relative o nelle interrogative che cominciano con preposizione seguita da what/where/ which/whom: the man with whom I was talking (luomo con il quale stavo parlando) the man I was talking with the shop from which I buy my clothes (il negozio dove compro i miei vestiti) the shop I buy my clothes from To whom are you talking? (Con chi stai parlando) Who are you talking to?

14 The tube station is just in front of you.
ATTENZIONE Normalmente entrambe le costruzioni possono essere usate, ma preferibile l'omissione della preposizione quando l'oggetto diretto una frase: show me the way to happiness (mostrami la via per la felicit); mentre si preferisce l'uso della preposizione quando l'oggetto indiretto una frase, o quando l'oggetto diretto it o them: I have to give this letter to the girl who works in the coffee opposite my office.
Tom bought them for her. (Tom li compr per lei)

(Peter mi invit a cena) The doctor advised the patient to wait. (Il medico disse al paziente di aspettare) The teacher asked me a question. (Linsegnante mi fece una domanda)
3. I SOSTANTIVI
Esempi: child/children (bambino/bambini) foot/feet (piede/piedi) goose/geese (oca/oche) man/men (pronuncia: mn/men) (uomo/uomini) mouse/mice (topo/topi) ox/oxen (bue/buoi) tooth/teeth (dente/denti) woman/women (pronuncia: wmn/wImn) (donna/donne)
Generalmente questi sostantivi non vogliono larticolo indeterminativo e possono essere preceduti da costruzioni come a bit/piece/slice/ecc.of, o da some, any, no, a little: a piece of information (una informazione) a bit of news (una notizia) a drop of water (una goccia dacqua) a slice of cake (una fetta di dolce)
Ecco alcuni esempi: I need some information about the news I heard on T.V. yesterday. (Desidero alcune informazioni sulle notizie che ho ascoltato ieri in TV)
Do you have any experience using computers?
My father and I have had an exciting experience this afternoon while we were walking in the the wood, we saw a she-wolf with her cubs.
She has curly, blond hair. (Ha i capelli ricci biondi) The magician took one hair from his head to show the audiece the sharpness of the blade.
Ad esempio si pu dire Coffee and tea are soft drinks. (T e caff sono bevande non alcoliche) ma si pu anche chiedere One coffee please, and two beers. (Un caff e due birre, per favore) 17 4. AGGETTIVI E PRONOMI
Esistono infatti particolari verbi che possono solo essere seguiti dagli aggettivi, e sono feel, appear, get, keep, look, make, taste, sound, turn, smell, become, seem, be. You look tired. (sembri stanco) [aspetto fisico] It tastes good. (sembra buono) [sapore del cibo] People outside got impatient. (la gente fuori divent impaziente) I feel fine. (mi sento bene) They seem happy. (sembra felice) Johns father became famous.
They were disgusted. (la cena disgustosa) (furono disgustati)
The race was exhausting. The runners were exhausted. (la gara fu estenuante) (i corridori erano esausti)
a boring person = a person who makes me feel bored (una persona noiosa = una persona che mi annoia)
a bored person = a person who feels bored for some reason (una persona annoiata = una persona che si annoia di qualcosa
4.1 AGGETTIVI E PRONOMI POSSESSIVI
Pronomi personali soggetto Pronomi personali oggetto I me you you he/she/it him/her/it we us you you they them
18 Pronomi possessivi Aggettivi possessivi mine my yours your his/hers his/her/its ours our yours your theirs their
La s finale legata allaggettivo, altrimenti sarebbe la forma contratta del verbo to be al presente: its its.
A: This is my dog. (Questo il mio cane) B: Whats its name? (Come si chiama?) A: Her name is Dolly.
His father = Tom/Marc/John/the boy/ecc.s father. Her father = Sara/Jane/Elizabeth/the girl/ecc.s father Susan put on her blue dress. (Susan indoss labito blu) Use my computer, but be very careful.
Altri esempi: I want all my things back! (rivoglio tutte le mie cose!) Look at your hands, they are dirty. (guarda le tue mani, sono sporche) Before going out she put on her coat and took her bag. (Prima di uscire indoss il cappotto e prese la borsa) I hurt my hand while I was cutting the grass.
Luso del genitivo sassone obbliga alla soppressione dellarticolo davanti alla persona o cosa posseduta (the voice of the teacher=the teachers voice).
10s worth of postcards (cartoline da dieci sterline) $ 50s worth of phonecards (carte telefoniche da cinquanta dollari)
Il genitivo sassone si usa con alcuni nomi di professioni, ad esempio: the bakers=the baker shop (il fornaio) the florists=the florists shop (il fiorista) the chemists=the chemists shop (la farmacia) the dentists=the dentists surgery (il dentista-inteso come ambulatorio) the doctors=the doctors surgery (il dottore-inteso come ambulatorio) the travel agents=the travel agents office (lagenzia turistica) il luogo non viene espresso, ma come se lo fosse.
4.2 AGGETTIVI E PRONOMI INTERROGATIVI
Which/what entrambi significano quale e possono essere usati per le cose, il primo (which) implica una scelta limitata, ad esempio: What do you want to see? (Cosa vuoi vedere?) (scelta molto ampia) I have Casablanca, Star Wars and Pretty Woman: which do you want to see? (C Casablanca, ... ... ... ... ...: cosa vuoi vedere?) (scelta limitata) What does it cost to marry on a tropical island? (Quanto costa sposarsi su unisola tropicale?) Which is the most beautiful island in Hawaii? (Qual lisola pi bella delle Hawaii?)
20 Il secondo (what?) pu anche assumere altri significati: What kind of chocolate is this? It is not sweet. (che tipo di?) (Che tipo di cioccolata questa? Non dolce)
What did the notice say about the movie? (cosa...?) (Cosa diceva al critica del film?)
What did you do that for? = Why did you do that? (What for - perch...) (Perch lhai fatto?)
What is the weather like? It is sunny. (come ...?) (Com il tempo/Che tempo fa?- C il sole)
What was the film like? It was quite boring. (come stato/a ...?) (Comera il film?- Abbastanza noiosa)

What does it look like?- It is white and soft. It looks like cotton.
Which school do you send your children to? (A quale scuola mandi i tuoi figli?)
4.3 AGGETTIVI E PRONOMI DIMOSTRATIVI
Singolare Plurale This television these televisions; (Questo televisore/questi televisori) That train those trains; (Quel treno/quei treni) This man these women; (Questuomo/queste donne) That city those cities; (Quella citt/quelle citt)
4.4 AGGETTIVI DI QUANTIT
Fanno parte di questi aggettivi: some, any, little, few, many, much, no ed anche tutti i numerali.
Ill take some candy for my little sister. (Prendo alcuni dolcetti per la mia sorellina) Would you like some tea? (Desidera del t?) Could you take some water to that old lady sat over there? She is not feeling well. (Potresti portare un p dacqua a quella vecchia signora seduta laggi? Non si sente bene) There are some things which annoy me. Some people preferred to go outside instead of listening to the speaker.
(Non ho sigarette) Have you got any water in your flask? (Hai dellacqua nella borraccia?) Ask me if you want any information. (Chiedi se desideri qualsiasi informazione) Are you sure about that? I dont think they need any help. (Ne sei sicuro? Non credo che abbiano bisogno daiuto) Any English Grammar will explain you the use of the adjectives.
I have no time, Im in a hurry. (Non ho tempo. Ho fretta) You have no right to speak to me in that way. (Non hai diritto di parlarmi in quel modo) No news came from the radio. (Dalla radio non giunsero notizie) No voice was heard. (Non si sent nessuna voce) Did you buy any bread? No, there was none.
Little is known about the other planets of the Solar System.
There are a few students in your class.
Much viene usato con i nomi uncountable. Many accompagna sostantivi numerabili al plurale. Li si usa principalmente nelle frasi con verbi negativi, ma anche possibile usare much e many in frasi affermativa, spacialmente nella lingua orale.
Nelle frasi interrogative possono essere preceduti da how e assumere il significato di quanto/a/i/e?: How much is it? (Quanto costa?) How many pens do you want? (Quante penne vuoi?) How much sugar do you put in your tea? (Quanto zucchero metti nel tea?)
Esempi:
23 expensive (costoso) more expensive most expensive
delighted (lieto/felice) more delighted most delighted
beautiful (bello) more beautiful most beautiful
secure (sicuro) more secure most secure
heavy (pesante) heavier heaviest
+ good (buono) better best
+ bad (cattivo) worse worst
+ little (piccolo) less least
+ many/much (tanto/molto) more most
She is older than I Am; NO She is elder than I am.
Il comparativo further si usa anche con i nomi astratti, e lo si pu tradurre con ulteriore/i: Further information will be given at the end of the tour. I wont go any further. (non andr oltre)
4.5.1 LA COSTRUZIONE DELLA FRASE COMPARATIVA
Comparativo di uguaglianza si forma con asaggettivoas per le frasi affermative: She is as beautiful as her mother. ( bella come sua madre) This car runs as fast as a racing car. (Questauto corre veloce come unauto da corsa) Il primo as sempre obbligatorio.
si forma con not as/soaggettivoas per le frasi negative: You are not as clever as your brother. (Non sei furbo come tuo fratello) English coffee is not so/as good as Italian one. (Il caff inglese non cos buono come quello italiano) Im not so/as rich as my sister. (Non sono ricco come mia sorella)
Gerundioas/not soaggettivoasgeundio: Travelling alone is not as/so nice as travelling with friends. (Viaggiare da soli non cos bello come viaggiare in compagnia) Buying a new one is as easy as repairing the old one. (Comprare unauto nuova tanto semplice quanto sistemare quella vecchia) Surfing the Net is as interesting as turning over the pages of a never-ending newspaper.
Comparativo di maggioranza Si forma con than: She is more beautiful than me. ( pi bella di me) I am cleverer than my brother. (Sono pi furbo di mio fratello) You look older than your twin-sister. (Sembri pi vecchia di tua sorella gemella) An airplane is faster than an helicopter. (Un aereo pi veloce di un elicottero) This house is bigger than I expected. (Questa casa pi grande di quanto mi aspettassi) This little hotel is more expensive than that big one. (Questo piccolo hotel pi caro di quello grande) Foxes are cleverer than dogs. (Le volpi sono pi furbe dei cani)
Comparativo di minoranza si forma con lessaggettivothan: The tall boy is less handsome than the little one. (Il ragazzo alto meno bello del piccolo) She is less strong than you. ( meno forte di te) My steak is less thick than yours, but it is more expensive. (La mia bisteccha meno grossa della tua, ma pi costosa) The room was less small than we expected.
The most intelligent of men: Albert Einstein. Il pi intelligente tra gli uomini:... The most beautiful of queens: Cleopatra. La pi bella tra le regine: 25 It is the best coffee I have ever drunk. il miglior caff che abbia mai bevuto Marc is the cleverest student in the school. Marc lo studente pi intelligente della scuola These were the most expensive holidays we have ever spent.
(si comportato coraggiosamente) You speak English well. (parli bene inglese) They acted courageously.
(corse via) Susan wasn't there. (Susan non era l) Throw it away! (gettalo via!) I have looked for my shoes everywhere, but I cannot find them.
(verranno domani) Now they are here. (adesso/ora sono qui) John will stay here till nine. (John star qui sino alle nove) Go now! (vai ora) The police will soon be here. (non ho ancora finito) She hasn't yet filled the application form the employee gave her.
Lavverbio still segue il verbo to be ma precede tutti gli altri verbi; si usa principalmente nelle frasi interrogative ed affermative They are still at home. (sono ancora a casa) I still watch that old T.V. program. (guardano ancora quel vecchio programma)
- Gli avverbi di frequenza seguono il verbo to be; precedono i tempi semplici di tutti gli altri verbi e con i verbi composti seguono il primo ausiliare The cat is always running from one side to the other of the room.
The teacher was completely right. (linsegnante aveva completamente ragione) I'm really sorry (mi dispiace veramente) You nearly killed me with your joke. (mi hai quasi ucciso con il tuo scherzo) He is only seven. (ha solo sette anni) I only borrowed her scarf.
- Gli avverbi interrogativi si mettono all'inizio della frase Why are you driving on the left? - Because we are in England. They drive on the left. (Perch guidi sulla sinistra? Perch siamo in Inghilterra. Si guida sulla sinistra)
Where do they live? - They live in Australia. (Dove vivono?- In Australia).
When do you usually go to school? - Every morning from Monday to Friday.
How are you? - I'm fine, thanks. (come stai? bene, grazie)
How much is it?- $100. (quant? - 100 dollari)
How do you get there? By car. (come hai fatto ad arrivarci? In macchina)
ATTENZIONE How is he? (Come sta di salute) What is he like? (Com'?) What does she look like? (Com? di aspetto fisico)
6. I VERBI
INTRODUZIONE
presente progressivo perfetto perfetto progressivo
I live/he lives I am/he is living I have/he has lived Ive/he has been living
I/he lived I/he was living I/he had lived I/he had been living
I/he will live I/he will be living I/he will have lived I/he will have been living
I/he would live I/he would be living I/he would have lived I/he would have been living
Nella lingua parlata gli ausiliari negativi sono comunemente usati nelle forme contratte dont/doesnt e didnt: I/you dont live; he/she/it doesnt live; we/you/they dont live I/you/he/she/it/we/you/they didnt live. I was interested in that thing - I was not/wasnt interested in that thing. (Ero/non ero interessato a quella cosa) He will go back He will not/ wont go back. (Torner/Non torner) She would understand She would not/ wouldnt understand. (Capirebbe/Non capirebbe) La forma interrogativa si crea facendo precedere il soggetto da do/does/did, invertendo cio la posizione del soggetto, che viene a trovarsi prima del verbo allinfinito. Questo per ci che riguarda tutti i tempi semplici; per gli altri tempi la forma interrogativa si crea mettendo il soggetto dopo lausiliare: Does Sally like strawberries? (a Sally piacciono le fragole?) Do you prefer mineral water or coke? (preferisci acqua o coca?) Did they enjoy the movie? (gli piaciuto il film?) Have you finished? (hai/avete finito?) Are they studying? (stanno studiando?) Will you be here on time? (sarai/sarete qui in orario?) Would you please sit down? Questo tipo di frase viene usata quando chi parla aspetta o spera in una risposta affermativa Didnt you see her? (Non lhai vista?) Arent I? (Non sono io?) Havent you finished yet? (non hai ancora finito?) Dont you like my new house? (non ti piace la mia casa nuova?)
6.1 I VERBI ORDINARI
(mio padre abita in India) It snows in winter. (in inverno nevica) She doesnt work at night (non lavora la notte) I dont eat meat (non mangio carne) Do they speak English? (parlano inglese?) Does he play tennis? (gioca a tennis?) 29 + TEMPO PRESENTE PROGRESSIVO Si forma con il tempo presente del verbo essere to be (I am, you are, he is, she is, it is, we are, you are, they are), seguito dal verbo che si desidera usare, alla forma in ing.
Its raining (sta piovendo) You are drinking coke (stai bevendo coca-cola) He is reading a book about electronics. (Sta leggendo un libro sullelet- tronica) You arent listening (non stai ascoltando) He isnt wearing shoes (non ha le scarpe/ scalzo) Am I talking too fast? (parlo troppo veloce?) Are you sleeping? (stai dormendo?) Is she doing her homework? (sta facendo i compiti?) Im meeting John tonight. He is taking me out for dinner. (Vedr John stasera. Mi porter fuori a cena)
I talked to him yesterday. (ho parlato con lui ieri) The train was ten minutes late. (il treno aveva dieci minuti di ritardo) He worked in that shop for four years. (Ha lavorato in quel negozio per quattro anni) e ora non vi lavora pi He didnt go to the lesson. (Non andato alla lezione) Did you play football on Sunday? (Hai giocato a calcio domenica?)
She always used to dress in yellow; now she always dresses in black. (Era solita vestire sempre di giallo; ora veste sempre di nero)
He didnt use to like cats but he likes them now.
Did you use to walk to school? (Andavi a scuola a piedi?)
+ TEMPO PASSATO PROGRESSIVO Si forma con il passato semplice dellausiliare essere/to be (I/he/she/it was; you/we/they were) seguito dal participio presente (forma in -ing) del verbo che si desidera usare. At eight oclock he was having breakfast. (alle otto stava facendo colazione) When I arrived John was talking on the phone (Quando sono arrivato John stava parlando al telefono) entrambe le precedenti azioni sono cominciate prima ed ancora continuavano They werent watching the film. (Non stavano guardando il film.) What were you doing when I called? (Cosa stavi facendo quando ti ho chiamato?)
It was getting dark (si stava facendo buio) People were starting to go home.
6.2 I VERBI AUSILIARI
I verbi ausiliari pi usati sono: to be, to have, to do, e i verbi modali: must, may, might, can, could, will e would. Yes, I do. (Parli inglese? S, lo parlo) Do they understand the movie? No, they dont. (Capiscono il film? No, non lo capiscono) 31 Have you studied the new lesson? No, I havent. Hai studiato la nuova lezione? No, non lho fatto) Did you hear the news? Yes, we did. (Avete sentito la notizia? S.) Sally talks too much. Yes, she does. (Sally parla troppo. S, vero)
+ GLI AUSILIARI BE, HAVE, DO Sono gli unici che presentano delle particolarit, perch non sono solo ausiliari, ma anche verbi irregolari. Vediamo il loro uso come ausiliari
+ TO BE si usa per creare la forma progressiva e quella passiva Alice is writing a book. (Alice sta scrivendo un libro) We were going for a walk. (Stavamo facendo una passeg-giata) Well be leaving soon. (Partiremo presto) Paper is made from wood. (La carta deriva dal legno)
+ TO HAVE si usa per coniugare i tempi nella forma perfetta ed seguito dal participio passato dei verbi I have never been there before. He has been working on the car. (present perfetto progressivo) (Stava lavorando / Ha lavorato sulla macchina)
+ TO DO si usa per creare la forma negativa ed interrogativa del presente e del passato semplice dei verbi ordinari I dont understand. (Non capisco) She doesnt eat meat. (Non mangia carne) They dont like it. (A loro non piace) He didnt pass. (Non pass/non passato) Do they like it? (A loro piace?) What does he want? (Cosa vuole?)
6.3 I VERBI MODALI
I verbi modali pi comuni sono: can, could, may, might, must, need, ought to, should; hanno la stessa forma per tutte le persone, sono seguiti dallinfinito del verbo senza il to e non vogliono lausiliare do per la creazione delle forme interrogativa e negativa I may see you tomorrow. Posso vederti domani (forse ci vediamo domani) She could see you next week. Potrebbe incontrarti la prossima settimana) You mustnt speak during the play. Non si deve parlare durante il gioco Can you give him the tickets? Puoi dargli i biglietti?
32 CAN/COULD il verbo modale che esprime possibilit, abilit e permesso (in alternativa a may = potere nel senso di probabilit oppure permesso); la forma al presente (can), come quella al passato (could), uguale per tutte le persone. Non regge lausiliare nelle forme interrogativa e negativa. Questo modale sostituito da altri verbi che hanni il suo stesso significato, come allow o to be able to, nei tempi progressivi, allinfinito, al futuro semplice e ai tempi perfetti:
Ive been allowed to drive my fathers car ever since I got my driving licence.
You cant swim in that river because of the alligators (Non si pu nuotare in quel fiume a causa degli alligatori). Non un luogo sicuro. Mushrooms can be quite dangerous. (I funghi possono essere piuttosto pericolosi) Se lazione al futuro si user you/we/people ecc. + will be able: When the new railways are ready, well be able to reach Paris in 30 minutes.
Presente
Can you speak French? Sai parlare francese? Our baby cant walk yet. Our baby is not able to walk yet.
Futuro
After these lessons I will be able to speak English Dopo queste lezioni potr parlare inglese
Our baby will be able to walk in a few weeks.
Could you show me the way? Mi potresti indicare la via? Could you help me with this program? Mi potresti aiutare con questo programma? Could you lend me $ 10 ? Mi presteresti 10 Dollari? When I was young I could/was able to climb trees. (abilit generale) The motorbike broke near a gasoline station so I was able to push it to its garage. (pi specifico)
33 Could lo si usa al tempo presente quando c unidea di condizione: Could you take the train by yourself? Prenderesti il treno per conto tuo? (se fosse necessario) I could get you a copy.
- Quando esprime permesso si usa come alternativa a may, con un uso pi ampio per, perch ha sia il significato di dare, sia quello di avere il permesso: You can take two books home with you. a) Io ti permetto di prendere i libri. b) La biblioteca te lo permette. You cant eat your sandwiches here. a) Non ti permetto di mangiarli qui. b) Il capo/la struttura/la scuola/ecc. non permette di mangiarli qui.
MAY/ MIGHT Questo modale esprime possibilit e permesso.
He may/might tell his father = Perhaps he tells/will tell his father. (Potrebbe/forse lo dice/dir al padre) Ann may/might know the way = Perhaps Ann knows the way.
Nelle richieste di permesso, espresse come frasi interrogative, si possono usare sia may/can e could. Nelle frasi interrogative, alla prima persona (singolare o plurale), si richiede il permesso di fare qualcosa (non esiste una forma interrogativa con la seconda persona: NO May you?).
Esempi: May I keep your recorder for a month? May/Can/Could I use your computer?
- May/might sostituiscono will/would nelle frasi condizionali per indicare possibilit invece di certezza: If you pour hot water on ice it will melt. If you pour hot water into a glass it may crack. (possibilit) Se versi acqua calda in un bicchiere di vetro, pu rompersi If you tried again you would succeed. (certezza) Se tu provassi, ancora ci riusciresti If you tried again you might succeed. (possibilit) Se tu provassi ancora, potresti farcela
MUST/HAVE TO Sono i verbi che indicano obbligo e necessit. La forma interrogativa (must + 34 soggetto + verbo allinfinito senza to) e quella negativa (soggeto + must + not + verbo allinfinito senza to) non reggono lausiliare al presente. Al tempo passato sostituito dal passato semplice di have to (= had to). Nella forma affermativa, il passato si forma con had per tutte le persone (soggetto + had to + verbo allinfinito senza to). Nella forma negativa e in quella interrogativa al passato necessario usare lausiliare did (Negativa: soggetto + didn t + have to + verbo/ Interrogativa: did + soggetto + have to + verbo). Have to ha anche un tempo futuro, che si crea con will (affermativa: soggetto + will + have to + verbo allinfinito senza to). Le forme interrogativa e negativa al futiro reggono sempre lausiliare will/wont (= will not).
- Must si usa per esprimere un ordine o lobbligo di fare qualcosa; implica lautorit di chi sta parlando: You must ring me as soon as you arrive. (Devi chiamarmi appena arrivi) You must clean your room. (Devi pulire la tua stanza). Entrambi sono miei ordini. We must go there. (Dobbiamo andare l)
- Must si usa per dare istruzioni oppure per esprimere approvazione di regole: You must drive carefully. (istruzione) (Devi guidare con attenzione) You must fasten your seatbelt. (istruzioni/obbligo) (Devi allacciare la cintura) Children must obey their parents.
I have to work from 9.00 am until 5.00 pm every day. Ogni giorno devo lavorare dalle 9.00 alle 17.00 (le circostanze che lo rendononecessario) You have to drive on the left in Britain In Gran Bretagna devi guidare sulla sinistra. ( la legge che lo afferma) If there are no taxis we will have to walk Se non ci sono taxi dovremo camminare. We have got to buy a new program these week. Dobbiamo comprare un nuovo programma questa settimana
- ATTENZIONE Mustnt esprime una proibizione, mentre dont/doesnt have to significano non necessario: You mustnt do that. (Non devi farlo-proibizione) You dont have to do that.
35 Dont need to + infinito Esiste anche la forma Neednt + infinito You dont need to carry identification, but its a good idea. (Non c bisogno di un documento di identificazione, ma una buona idea) You neednt make two copies of the file. One will be enough. I didnt need to water the flowers myself. My wife did it. Lha fatto mia moglie)
ATTENZIONE Si noti la differenza tra must not (obbligo negativo) e need not: You must not drive fast. There is a speed limit here. (Non devi correre. C un limite di velocit qui) You dont need to drive fast; we have plenty of time.
Quando seguito dallinfinito si usa per esprimere consigli/ doveri/ supposizioni ed sinonimo di should: a) You ought to/ should finish your work before going out. (consiglio) (Dovresti finire il lavoro prima di uscire) b) I know I should. (lo so)
We really ought to go and see grandma. (dovere) (Dovremmo veramente andare a trovare la nonna)
ATTENZIONE Si noti la differenza tra: You must do it. (obbligo da parte di chi parla) You have to do it. (obbligo esterno) You ought to/should do it. (nessun obbligo, semplicemente un consiglio)
SHOULD il modale sinonimo di ought to. Quando seguito dallinfinito si usa per esprimere consigli, doveri e supposizioni: I dont think the government should increase taxes. (Non credo che il governo aumenti le tasse) You dont look well, you should stay in bed. (Non hai un bellaspetto dovresti stare a letto) Ill call him; its ten oclock, he should be at home.
6.4 I TEMPI VERBALI

Whenever the doorbell rings the parrot says: Come in.
Travel agent: You leave Bologna at 12.00 tomorrow and arrive in Dublin at 14.00.
We spend a week in Dublin and leave at 19.00 on Sunday. We arrive in Bologna at 21.00. The shuttle takes us to the train station where the train to Ferrara leaves at 21.45.
If the train leaves on time, we will get to Milan in time to catch the connection to Turin.
- verbi che esprimono attivit mentale feel believe perceive realize remember see think understand
- verbi che indicano possesso belong own possess
What are you doing? (Cosa fai/stai facendo?) John is learning French at school (John studia il francese a scuola) Where are you going?-Im going home (Dove vai? Vado a casa) The children dont want to go out because it is raining (I bambini non vogliono uscire perch sta piovendo)
Im reading a book on biology, but I dont understand a word (Sto leggendo un libro di biologia, ma non capisco una parola)
Il presente progressivo si usa nelle frasi con always quando si vuole indicare unazione ripetuta di frequente che infastidisce chi sta parlando: Susan is always playing tennis on Saturdays. (Susan gioca sempre a tennis il sabato) Susan always plays tennis on Saturdays.
Tom translated your message yesterday. (Tom ha tradotto il tuo messaggio ieri)
We married in 1944, during World War II. When did you get married? (Quando vi siete sposati?) (che il tempo sia al passato sottinteso)
We married in Los Angeles. (azione chiaramente avvenuta in un tempo passato) (Ci siamo sposati a Los Angeles)
I met Tom in New York. (Incontrai Tom a N.Y.) (azione chiaramente avvenuta in un tempo passato)
The plane was one hour late.
I lived in San Francisco for five years.

Susan never wore jeans. (abitudine passata) (Susan non indossava mai jeans)
My brother always drank milk with honey before going to sleep when he was a little child.
A: I rang your doorbell at seven, but you didnt open. What were you doing? Cosa stavi facendo?)
B: At seven I was having a shower. (Alle sette stavo facendomi una doccia) When the Smiths arrived I was setting the table.
When the Smiths arrived
v 144424443 I was setting the table
ATTENZIONE When the Smiths arrived I set the table.
When the Smiths arrived I set the table.
vc.
discorso diretto: She said, I am wearing my shoes. (disse: Sto indossando le scarpe)
discorso indiretto: She said she was wearing her shoes. (disse che stava indossando le scarpe)
Things were getting better. (le cose stavano migliorando) The snow was filling the whole square. (la neve stava riempendo lintera piazza)

MA
My mother talked to your mother yesterday.
40 6.4.5 IL PRESENTE PERFETTO (THE PRESENT PERFECT)
I have painted the kitchen, the paint is still wet. (ancora legata al presente) (Ho tinteggiato la cucina, la vernice ancora fresca) My brother has bought a new car.
MA
Susan wrote a book. (significa che ora Susan non scrive pi) They have played here recently. (e probabilmente ci giocheranno ancora) (Hanno giocato qui ultimamente) They havent played here lately/recently. (lately meno usato nelle affermative)
I have had ham and cheese instead of bread and butter for breakfast this morning.
Le espressioni di tempo pi comunemente usate per questo tipo di frase sono: since, for, all the time, lately, always, never, recently, all day/night/ecc., all my/her/his/ecc. life. He has worked in that company for two years. (e vi sta lavorando ancora) (Ha lavorato in quella compagnia per due anni) Susan has cut her hair since she left her husband. The scouts have walked all day. (e stanno ancora camminando) (Gli scouts hanno camminato per tutto il giorno) My grandma has lived in this house all her life. Have you ever eaten a meat-pie? Yes, lots of times. Si, spesso) Have you ever driven a Ferrari? Yes, I have driven it occasionally. (Hai mai guidato una Ferrari? Si, ogni tanto/occasionalmente) Susan hasnt eaten cakes since Halloween. (Susan non mangia torte da Halloween) I havent seen him since he bought that new computer.
Have you seen John Did you see John this morning? this morning?
6.00 7.00 8.00 12.00 144444444444444244444444444443 this morning
I have lived in Rome all my life (e ancora ci vivo) (Ho vissuto a Roma per tutta la vita)
I have lived in Rome for a long time (e ancora ci vivo) (Ho vissuto a Roma per molto tempo/ da molto tempo che vivo a Roma) Susan has not eaten cakes for two weeks.
I have played with my new computer every day for one month.
N.B. Il tempo sottinteso perch lazione citata gi diventata definita per chi sta parlando: A: What have you done? (Cosa hai fatto?) B: I have created a new video-game. (Ho inventato un nuovo video-game) A: Did you do it all by yourself ? (Lhai fatto tutto da solo?) B: No, my son helped me. (No, mi ha aiutato mio figlio)
6.4.6. IL PRESENTE PERFETTO PROGRESSIVO (THE PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS)
Marc has played with his children.
Marc has been playing with his children.(significa che lazione del giocare iniziata al passato e (Marc gioca/sta giocando) (Non terminata al presente) Ive been reading his book.

La forma passiva si costruisce con lausiliare essere (pres.: am/is/are; pass.: was/were; pres.perfect: have/has been; fut.: will be) seguito dal verbo al participio passato. Esempi:
Cars are made using new technologies. (Le auto vengono costruite usando nuove tecnologie)
My bike was stolen.
The results of the exam have been published in the newspaper recently (I risultati dellesame sono stati recentemente pubblicati sul giornale)

A doctor is a person who cures the sick. (viene definito cosa un dottore) (Un dottore una persona che cura i malati) I pronomi relativi usati per questo tipo di frase sono: who/that (soggetto) whom/that (oggetto) whose (possessivo) per le persone, e
that/which (soggetto) that (oggetto) whose/of which (possessivo) per le cose.
Esempi: The man who stole your car is in prison now.
Look at that woman surrounded by photographers: she is the actress who played in A Fish called Wanda, isnt she? The car which I bought broke down. (Lauto che ho comprato si rotta)
ATTENZIONE Gli avverbi relativi where, when, why possono sostituire il pronome relativo preceduto da una preposizione: when = in/on which (usato per il tempo) The day when we met. (il giorno in cui ci incontrammo) The year when I was born. (lanno in cui sono nato)
where = in /at which (usato per il luogo) The village where they were spending their holidays.
why = for which The reason why she left the room in a hurry was a call from her mother.
who (soggetto) whom/who (oggetto) whose (possessivo) per le persone, e which (soggetto) which (oggetto) whose/of which (possessivo) per le cose Esempi: The little child, who had been walking all day, fell asleep immediately. (Mr Jones, per il quale stavo lavorando, era molto generoso) Mr Jones, whom I was working for, was very generous.
Se ci sono espressioni di tempo o di luogo, queste restano sempre alla fine: Alan, with whom my brother plays tennis every Sunday morning, has got an accident.
The teacher, whose class was not following his lesson, decided to have a break.
My sister, whose friends go to gym every night, has decided to buy a season ticket for theatre.
9.1 IL CONDIZIONALE DI 1 TIPO (First Conditional): PROBABILIT/POSSIBILIT
Esempi: If it rains, you wont go out with your dog. (Se piove non uscirai con il cane) If he eats a lot, he will get fat. (Se mangia molto ingrasser) The dog will bite you if you cross the gate. (Il cane ti morder se attraversi il cancello) If we don't find a petrol station, we will run out of petrol.
Esempi: If Tom studied English before the exam he would pass it.
