SAMPI meters are positive displacement meters for liquids. They are designed for liquid metering both in
transfer and process control applications. Thanks to their design they are easy to keep and can suit a wide
range of applications. The meter consists of a housing (1) where two bladed displacement rotors (4, 5) and
a central single blocking rotor (3) turn in synchronized relationship within three cylindrical bores with no
metal-to-metal contact within the meter element. Each rotor is supported on either end by a bearing plate (6,
7) through which the rotor shafts protrude.
The bladed displacement rotors, alternately move through the two half-cylinder bores of the meter element,
while the single blocking rotor rotates within its bore in such a way as to produce a continuous capillary seal
between the unmetered upstream product and the metered, downstream product.
At one end of each rotor shaft is a timing gear (8, 9, 10). The blocking rotor gear, having twice the number of
teeth of each of the displacement rotor gears, rotates at half the RPM of the displacement rotors.
Throughout the meter element the mating surfaces are either flat surfaces or cylindrical faces and sections
that are most accurately machined. No oscillating or reciprocating motion within the device permits
extremely close and consistent tolerances within the SAMPI meter.
Because the dynamic force exerted by the product flowing through the meter is at right angles to the faces of
the displacement rotors, and because the meter is designed so that the rotor shafts are always in horizontal
plane, there is no axial thrust. Therefore the rotors automatically seek the center of the stream between the
two bearing plates thereby eliminating wear between the ends of the rotors and the bearing plates.
SAMPI meters are manufactured with different materials in order to meet customer requirements.

Manuale di Prodotto Operation Manual CONTATORI/PD METERS M SERIES
The air/vapour eliminator pulls out every vapour from the piping system. So far as there is vapour in the
system no product delivery is allowed. When vapour or some emulsion (air/vapour + liquid) gets into the air
eliminator (A), the floater falls and draws down two reeds (D, E) causing the opening of two side ports (G, F).
From port F the air which is in the system is blown off to a container under ambient pressure or to a stocking
tank, when this lays under the ground.
Port G is connected to the lower housing (K) of the air check valve by means of a tube (I). The pressure
coming from port G, makes housing K find a pressure balance with housing M. The thrust of the spring (L)
adds to thrust due to pressure in housing K and makes the piston close the passage (N) and stop delivery.
When all of the gas has been pulled out, the liquid gets again into the air eliminator (A) and pushes the
floater (B) upward making the reeds (D, E) close the ports (F, G). The pressure in housing K goes back to
ambient pressure by means of a little sized slot (O) connected to a blowoff (H). So the pressure in housing
M, opposed only by the spring (L), pushes the piston (J) downward opening the passage (N) so as to allow
delivery.
In case of defective hydraulic seal of the piston (J), of the ports (F, G), housing K is pressurized and makes
the piston (J) stop delivery.

Delivery has now been preset, you can open the valve and start delivery (warning: do not forget to
pressure the installation prior to this).
If you set the wrong quantity and want to correct it push the red “stop” button.
The preset goes back to zero. Then repeat operations as by items 1, 2, 3 to set a new quantity
Warning: The red “stop” button is to be pushed as well when you want to stop delivery due to safety or
other reason. To start it again is enough you operate again the valve lever.
Warning: in case your counter is sealed, ask to authorized person prior to operation.

Warning:
Beware of the direction of adjustment, turn clockwise when you have a positive error and
counterclockwise in case of a negative error.
Anyway never pry too much.

ATTENZIONE
In tal caso
devono essere usati i contatori di clessa 2
WARNING
NEVER use class 1 meters with liquids having a vapour pressure
greater than 0,5 bar. In such a case use class 2 meters.

Make all connections in order to ensure the meter and the grounding device system are equipotential
Make sure you can get easily to fire extinguishers for your product. Consult your local fire department
for proper information about fire problems and mandatory law dispositions
Install the meter and its accessories complying with the electric and safety standards in force
Prior to meter installation the entire piping system must be flushed, with a liquid that is compatible with
the construction of the meter.
superficiali.
Keep the meter external surfaces clean in order to notice easily possible defects
giunto elastico compensatore posto all’ingresso e all’uscita dell’insieme è adatto allo scopo.
The meter must be firmly fastened to a platform or other support regardless of its mounting position.
Never hang the meter to the piping system and do all necessary to avoid that piping tensions due to
such cases as material dilation by temperature, stress of flange screws etc., are conveyed to the meter
assembly. Expansion joints both at the inlet and outlet of the meter assembly will prevent it from these
tensions
Calculate suitable working areas for maintenance operations. Remember you need a support where to
mount the meter
Meters are designed with special materials depending on the liquid/s they are used. Their compatibility
with a certain class of liquids is indicated on the SAMPI tag. Meters should not be used with other
liquids. In case of doubt please apply to SAMPI for information.
verifica metrica.
If required, convey the piping downstream of the meter towards a tank prover in order to carry out
calibration and/or metrological check
When missing in the assembly install a suitable strainer upstream of the meter so as to strain every
foreign material (welding dross, dirt etc.). Foreign bodies over a certain size could get into the rotors and
cause them to seize
When the meter assembly has got an air eliminator you have to connect the two outlet threaded ports (or
just one when the assembly includes an air check valve) to the tank of the liquid which is metered or to
other sealed container under ambient pressure. This to avoid contamination of the surrounding
ambience
There’s a mutual relationship between the liquid flow direction in the meter and the correct indication of
the delivered quantity on the register display; if you desire the register to count down you’ll have to
reverse the position of the adjuster drive gear as indicated in 9.1.3
funzionamento.
New or repaired piping can be the source of welding dross or foreign material which clog or break the
strainer network. The strainer basket must be daily checked during the first 100 hours of operation
A frequent check and cleaning of the strainer are required in order to get a good performance.
Locate the strainer on the inlet side of the meter (1).
Screw the strainer firmly to the meter flange (2).
Fasten the piping to the strainer (3).
Choose a position in the assembly for the air/vapour eliminator where:
• The meter and its accessories must not support the weight of the piping system.
• There is enough room to remove the air eliminator
Locate the air eliminator on the inlet side of the meter (1). Always mount the air eliminator in a vertical
position.
Screw the air eliminator to the coupling flange of the strainer (2)
Connect and fasten the piping to the air eliminator (3)
l’aria entri all’interno del misuratore.
Upstream lines must be maintained full to prevent air from entering the meter. If the upstream or
inlet lines are constructed in a manner which allows reverse flow, foot valves or back checks must
be installed
Underground tanks that are furnished with a submersible pump will eliminate many problems that
occur with positive displacement pumps (suction pumps) when suction piping is incorrectly sized or
when the lift is too great
Give careful attention to your system’s pumping equipment and piping because of their
influence on liquid being measured as it enters the meter assembly. Systems should be made free
of conditions that cause or introduce entrained air or vapour
Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation fully when installing pumps. Give particular
attention to factors like: use of foot valves, pipe size to the inlet and conformance to net positive
suction head conditions when suction pumping is required
For volatile liquids, such as light hydrocarbons which tend to flash or vaporize easily at higher
ambient temperatures, it is desirable to use flooded suctions and piping sized larger than the
normal pump size
When locating the meter under a tank (on truck tankers) the course of the suction piping affects
metering precision. The piping should have a constant inclination towards the pump avoiding
goosenecks
misuratore.
e/o prevedendo sull’impianto accumulatori idraulici adatti.
Hydraulic shock is harmful to all components of an operating system including valves, pump
and the meter. In particular meters must be afforded protection from shock because of their need
to measure with high precision. Generally the best protection is prevention, which can be readily
accomplished by adjusting valve closing rates in such a manner that shock does not occur
Thermal expansion like hydraulic shock is a phenomenon that can easily damage meters
and systems in general. Care should be taken in designing the system to include pressure relief
valves in any portion or branch of the system that might be closed off by closure of operating
valves or block valves
The meter can operate in a dry condition (with no liquid) for no longer than 5 minutes
The meter shall operate within the recommended flow rate range. Only in some exceptional
events it may be allowed to let it work with a 20% higher flow rate than the nominal one and
only for a short time
Start up. During the starting up the system shall be slowly filled in with liquid. There shall be no air in this
phase. Take care not to damage the meter. The system should be filled in by gravity or by using a pump.
Filling in the system by means of a pump. Apply to the pump manufacturer for information about its
loading. After the pump has been loaded with liquid, operate as follows:
1. Assicurarsi che la valle sia chiusa/Make sure the downstream valve is shut down.
2. Aprire parzialmente la valvola. Il contatore del misuratore comincerà a muoversi./Open partially the outlet
valve. The meter counter will start turning.
3. Quando il misuratore ha iniziato a rilevare un po’ di volume aprire la valvola completamente/When the meter
has started counting volume open completely the valve
eccedere la velocità indicata sul misuratore/In this phase the meter should not run faster than 20% of its
rated flow. Once the product is flowing out the end of your system, the outlet valve can be opened all
the way provided that the system is designed not to exceed the flow rate marked on the meter
NOTE: Se le valvole non sono manuali, consultare il costruttore per la loro lenta e parziale apertura / If the
valves are not manual, consult the valve manufacturer for slow flow start up
Make sure the pump has a
suitable pressure relief valve.
eliminare aria e vapore/Never use the meter or the system when they are not completely full of liquid or in
presence of air bubbles or compressed air/vapour. If this is not possible you require devices to eliminate
air/vapour
ATTENZIONE WARNING
Non smontare parti sotto pressione Do not disassemble parts
under pressure
Seasonal meter storage. If the meter is used for seasonal work, at the end of each season the meter
should be removed from the system and thoroughly flushed with a compatible liquid.
Do not mark or scratch any of the precision machined surfaces by prying or sanding parts
Torque specifications. All fasteners such as screws, bolts etc. should be torqued to proper
specification. See the Torque Chart in this manual.
Removing flange seals. when removing the flange assembly. Plane seals and teflon O-ring seal must
be changed every time. Make sure that the flange surface is clean.
When disassembling a meter to check for clearance between the bearing plate and housing. If you find
excessive clearance, check the bearing plate for flatness with a straight edge. Clearance can be caused
by shock problems that must be resolved. Contact your full service distributor if this occurs.

9.1.6 Inversione della lettura della Testata Contometrica / Reversing the
meter registration
The direction of flow is specified by the customer when the meter is ordered. The standard direction of flow is
from left to right when facing the front of the meter. If the meter is equipped with a strainer and/or valve, the
strainer (and/or valve) MUST be moved when reversing the direction of flow through the meter. When the
meter is first installed, check the register. If the register counts DOWN, meaning that the register numbers
decrease rather than increase, you must reverse the direction of registration by reversing the position of the
adjuster drive gear.
Rotor gears are timed by lining up the timing marks. The blocking rotor gear has a tooth directly in front of its
timing mark. On the displacement rotor gears, the timing mark falls in front of the space between two gear
teeth. Make sure that the tooth in front of the timing mark on the blocking rotor gear connects with the space in
front of the timing mark on the displacement rotor gear. You may need to remove the gears and reposition
them several times on their rotor ends in order to get the timing marks to line up correctly.

It is very important to observe the strainer basket maintenance procedure in order to protect the strainer and
the metering system. Substances which heap in the basket, including ice, may damage it affecting the whole
metering system. When substances heap in the basket the internal pressure increases cause the breaking of
the basket and by this allows harmful material get into the meter body and provoke major damages.
The following basket maintenance procedure is meant to have an effective strainer, to knock off repair costs
and ensure a suitable protection to the metering system.
Check daily the strainer during the first 100 hours of operation of the system.
Further the basket should be cleaned by a frequency which depends on the dust in the productt
9.2.1 Smontaggio/Disassembling
carefully the area of the strainer cover so as to remove impurities
2. Rimuovere le quattro viti e le quattro rondelle del coperchio/Remove the four screws and
