Villas are part of a master plan conceived by the architect Ferdinando Fagnola in the 70s, with semi-hypogeum architecture
with visible concrete, geological signs attacked by greenery and nature. Instead of being constructed to the project, they were
domesticated and bent to a strongly affirmed imagination of coastal architecture during the tourist boom, of granite cladding
and pastel coloured plaster.
The 2013 restoration project by F+P (Ferdinando Fagnola+PAT.) recovers the radical strength of the original project, intro-
ducing new elements regarding the spatial layout. Dismembered over the years into three distinct houses, the villa has been
returned to a single property as it was originally conceived. However this has not affected its overall fragmentary nature.
An encampment rather a villa in the traditional sense, the complex is organized in three independent units joined only on the
outside, with no interior corridors or other distribution areas. This has enabled conceiving each unit like a suite to serve the
members of a large family.
Created like large clods of earth raised from the ground to form green roofs, the structures are made from concrete left un-
covered both inside and out. The façade facing the sea is entirely glazed and with specially studied optical cones, frames the
beautiful views of the amazing surrounding landscape.

Mana e curato dallo studio Bezaleel (Carlo Bertotto, Leonardo Palladini, Enrico Zanel-
CHURCH OF SANTA TERESA DI GESÙ BAMBINO: NEW LITURGICAL POLES IN TURIN The project has enhanced and taken advantage of the compact design of the hall and assembly layout, which encourages the
congregation to participate with a final exemplary result for whoever builds new churches or adapts old ones.

The water touches the stainless steel overflow and designs a vacuum movement that awaits the Paschal Candle - and as the
candle penetrates the Paschal Wake - as the designers remind us - it leaves an indelible mark on the surface of the water.
A small metal cross placed on the presbytery vault is reflected on the font.
The baptistery has been redesigned to hold the sacrament of reconsecration, with a wood screen built on an iron frame that
envelops the font and repeats the pattern of the lattices and conceals the confessionals.
The new furnishings have steel frames and finishes that create a very dignified overall effect.
Both the font and ambo are made from the same Euganean trachyte stone with a light warm shade that is used for the floor
and altar, emphasizing the unity of the project.
The ambo has curved walls, a hollow cylinder that the lectern rises out of, made from a corten steel box shape and even though
the design is very refined it does not undermine its functionality.
The three aligned poles of the altar, ambo and font create a highly effective semantic continuum.

STEEL DETAILS
Since 2012, Olson Kundig Architects has been offering the steel components market a line of accessories called “The Tom
Kundig Collection” for closures, moving elements and metal components, furniture components. More than a hundred items,
all distinguished by scrupulous accuracy in the mechanisms and finishes and refined appearance. Research never stops when a
satisfactory aesthetic and perfect functional result are achieved: the purity of forms, lines and elimination of all the superfluous
and ease of movement are just the conclusion of a long research journey. Research begins well before then, with the interaction
between people and the items and the space where they are found, the poetry and rituality of the movements, always of impor-
tance even when simply closing a door or opening a drawer.
Each item celebrates this rituality of movement, highlighting the material it is forged from, the refined surface treatments and
wax finishes. In fact, touch is one of the senses that is more involved in this sensorial experience. Each item is craft made by the
“12th Avenue Iron Inc.”, a team of iron artists and artisans who work in various areas: large scale engineering, sculptures and
artistic work, small details.
The architect Tom Kundig’s work has always focused on this theme, i.e. the research into the different ways people interact with
their surroundings, the kinematic mechanisms that involve both the items and the people, rationality combined with the most po-
etic component. In Tom Kundig’s architecture the simple gesture of opening a door becomes a sort of dance between user and
item, a visual experience that becomes tactile, beyond the rationality of tout court ergonomic rules.
The material is left rough on many items in the collection, with the signs of the working on the surfaces, the scars of patient work
that narrates the uniqueness and history of the part.

The project site is situated among the ancient medieval towers of Rome, with their long shadows reaching out around them.

In the painting room the mathematic style of Officinaleonardo is clearly seen, where on the hard iron wall a logarithmic test of
cubes develops that emerge from the veil and veins of the ferrous oxide, working upwards from the bottom, forming the base
to exhibit the completed works or those in progress. Once again the relationship between the chaos of the typical marking of

Gerkan Marg and Partners (gmp).
sket cinesi: i Dongguan Leopards.
puntoni a zig-zag.

SUPERKINK
RIPENSARE É DI TENDENZA!
DI / BY MARINA CESCON
catalogato come “difetto” rispetto all’andamento rettilineo ed agli snodi classici ritenuti
“corretti”.
For the designers and manufacturers of Superkink, “Blå Station”, this cultural approach and ability to observe with new eyes is its
constant research philosophy and modus operandi.
The company was founded in 1986 in the seaside resort of Ahus on the southeast coast of Sweden, with the constantly rough sea,
similar to the restless fermenting creative spirit of this family firm, whose priority is to conceive, produce and market furniture that
they like first of all, and which - in the choice of materials, shapes and proportions - can tell a story.
When talking of innovation and sustainability, each new product should have a new attitude towards form, function, materials,
needs or industrial processes. It is always interesting to investigate what really happens when a new piece of furniture appears on
the market, the effects it has on users, the surroundings and the environment through to the final phase when the product becomes
waste (voluntary Nordic Swan ecology quality brand).
Therefore “rethink” in the broadest sense of the term, is not just cool but a need.

grigio, marrone e bluastro - tipico dell’acciaio Cor-ten.

THE PHYTOPHILER
The Phytophiler: a new way of living domestic greenery.
For all phytophilers - and more besides - who do not just consider plants as a part and completion of the domestic garden, but
domestic companions who they sympathetically relate to.
Terracotta vases, with their saucers and stainless steel structures interact with the plants with typically human methods and awa-
reness.
Extensions that enable the attentive observation, through a magnifying lens, of all the veins and shades of their leaves.
Mirrors that multiply their beauty, creating and encouraging new visual perspectives, and giving a total vision of the plant,
even in its most concealed parts.
Sound vases that caress the plant and encourage its growth.
Small supports to create an additional ‘satellite’ garden, that makes our indoor shrub feel it dominates the lawn or which, by
gathering together different species of plants, creates the best humidity level and microclimate for their mutual health.
A project that carries an attitude towards nature containing the awareness of facing living and sensitive creatures.

The original idea to allow the water to enter and then flow out again is wrong, as it presumes the water flow circuit is perfectly watertight,
while in fact, it is clearly shown that there are slits next to the corners which are connected by squares (when aluminium, PVC and squared

Furthermore, the central seal rarely gives excellent tightness for various reasons: on one hand, due to the poor mechanical resistance offered,
by having to screw the case fixing nogs to the wall when the frame is being installed; as the frame twists, it means the case moves away from
the door, creating dangerous leaks, without considering the fact that it is impossible to guarantee a calibrated fixing of all the screws.
H2\NO® (CLOSED JOINT) TECHNOLOGY COMPARED WITH OTHER CLOSING SYSTEMS. On the other hand, the deformation caused to the frame by numerous other aspects (thermal expansion, deformation caused by incorrect
movements, the door collapsing, etc.) also compromise the tightness of the seal.
Furthermore, as the system is based on a delicate play of pressure, it does not take much to upset the balance (for example, a small defor-

The Palladio armoured frames with H2\NO® (Closed Joint) seals guarantee total tightness against water, wind, fine dust and noise: no- Another important factor is the relative ease with which the central seal is worn and broken: a seal of this size positioned so that it juts out

to guarantee tightness all around the edge, something that is not done for obvious, if not always known, technical reasons.
ORIGINS OF OPEN JOINTS Also the constant research to reduce costs often leads to using poor quality seals, without the required flexibility and long life.
Open joint seals were designed to compensate the numerous problems found with traditional tongue systems used for window and door- As we have said, the tightness of the seal depends on the pressure system: the greater the external pressure the better the seal. However

First of all, it seems clear that this system requires exceptional dimensional stability from the frame: any movement or twisting would reduce away, they can be come the seat and transit point for dust and insects. With time they get dirty and block up, preventing the water from

The closed joint system H2/NO® by Palladio Trading & Engineering was created from the simple consideration that the water must not enter,
and therefore be taken outside again, as this causes a series of problems and unknown factors which are impossible to foresee and resolve: it C
is much simpler – the water must not enter. In fact, it is useless, costly and dangerous to create a hydraulic circuit inside a machine, the frame M
must be simple, guarantee high-level performance, long life, be economic and be able to be used in an unforeseen manner and by persons
Y
who are not specialised and who we must not expect special attention from. The simpler the machine, the more difficult it is for it to break
down and therefore it is more logical that its performance will be long lasting. CM
The Palladio Trading & Engineering closed joint system is a group of top quality products studied to operate in synergy to guarantee utmost MY
First of all the profiles: the profiles must be thick tubular steel to guarantee the stability and resistance to deformation required from the frame CMY
over the long term, to guarantee permanent top quality pressure for the seals. Temperature stability (steel has a very low linear thermal ex- K
pansion coefficient), wind force resistance and resistance to deformation caused by impact and incorrect movements and, finally, long lasting
stability in the reciprocal position between the case and the door. To guarantee the operation of the closed joint, the profiles must be welded:
this guarantees total resistance to infiltrations, maintaining the orthoganality and the planarity of the corners unaltered over the years.
The hinges too, when they are fixed on the outside, are welded and not screwed on, to prevent even the smallest infiltration of water through
the screw holes. The fittings are the basis for good results from the frame. The hinges must be as strong as the profile they are welded to, as
they are the only guarantee against the door falling, together with correct fitting of the glass pane. The thickness of the glass in the diagonal
is not as essential as in frames made from aluminium, PVC or wood, or frames that are not strong enough and which are squared and not
welded, meaning the glass has the responsibility for what should be the primary function of the frame. In steel frames, the thickness of the
glass completes what used to be called “perfection”, or the sum of all the details that create a top quality frame and protect the manufactu-
rer’s reputation, which used to be very precious.
The seals are also designed and made to guarantee long-lasting excellent tightness: gaskets made from advanced materials, like silicone
foam, maintain unaltered the features of suppleness, deformation, adaptability, interfacing with the closed frame to guarantee a seal that is
totally air and watertight.
Closing without excessive force by the user, thanks to the door, pressing evenly on the gasket, with the correct pressure all around the case.
Finally, no water outlet holes are required as, besides being aesthetically unattractive, they are totally useless and, in fact, counterproductive
for the risks they carry in certain conditions to become carriers of water inside the frame.

A glowing example is Mies van der Rohe: he had no love for covering paints or
mass produced profiles that rounded off the sharp corners: in his famous buildings,
which are icons of modern movement and industrial design, the structures have
very clear corners with the details being extremely clear and sublimely concise.
