Foreword

In maniera paradigmatica forma, struttura e storia sono state invece tenute assieme
There is ample evidence as to how the modern masters, in their shared pursuit
of formal inventions and constructional inventions, variously referred to past ex-
amples they had freely chosen as guides that could inspire and support them in
their strenuous pursuit of new things.
Perrets work, for example, offers well-known examples of relations between clas-
sic order and new structural rationalities. Even Le Corbusier consistently proved
he could treasure tradition: without his journey to the East there would have been
no Maisons Domino and the five points that would be the foundation of a lan-
guage. Without the reference to rationalism seen at Katsura or Jefferson, Wright
would not have had the tectonic insights of the Prairie Houses, or Larkin and
Johnson Wax Buildings. The memory of Schinkel plays a role in Mies pursuit of an
identity between assemblage of components and formal rigour.
The buildings shaped like soft clouds and gelatinous bowels, or the spiked bravu-
ra pieces designed by todays fashionable architects anything but functional, cost
effective and durable have no relation with either construction or history. Louis
Kahn, instead, kept form, structure and history paradigmatically together. As he
explicitly declared: Tradition gives you the powers of anticipation from which you
know what will last when you create images that reflect aspirations, translated
into reality by an inspired technology.

An outline of the origin and development of architectural masonry systems
A major place among the architectural traditions that were founded on masonry
construction certainly belongs to Egyptian architecture that, in this sense, might
almost be considered as the archetype. This is evident not much in the presence and
importance of walls in its structure but rather in how the Egyptian wall encapsulates
a way of viewing the essence of making architecture and therefore of building1.
Indeed, ancient Egyptians were concerned about the representation of physical
matter, and were particularly interested in the tactile and apparent qualities typi-
cal of its inert status. Therefore, the real starting point in the process of expression
and representation of this architecture is not the purely geometric and constructive
dimension of the wall but rather its matter, namely stone, rock in its natural status.
Precisely for this reason, in the Egyptian world, rock is not just a building mate-
rial but has rather a value of basic material that can build, more than the physical
ground of the Egyptian country, its architectural and geographical landscape2.
Such definition of matter is what controls and gives precise meaning to the dif-
ferent elements of Egyptian architecture, through its physical qualities of weight,

would masonry architecture discover the sense of depth as the direction that could
best convey representative and symbolic values.
1.2
Persistence of forms and characters of the stereotomic wall
We have seen how the expression of matter, through the expression of its typi-
cal tactile properties, was seemingly Egyptian architectures main goal, so much so
that we may read a perfect correspondence between what is defined as the nucleus
form and the art form of architecture, or the ontological and symbolical aspects of
the built form. In the two main architectural cultures of the past, the Greek and
Egyptian traditions, one of the key principles seems to be precisely the intention
to always keep such constructive and representational coherence alive and make it
comprehensible through form.
The achievement of an absolute correspondence between architectural form and
the constructive reality it represents is a rare occurrence in the history of architec-
ture, as any architectural form, over time and as common use grows established,
tends to require a certain degree of independence from its constructive origin. This

desimo problema date dallarchitettura sveva dieci secoli pi tardi, sviluppatasi in
vaults so that the thrusts are mutually eliminated. Only from a certain point from
the Pantheon on, we may say does emerge the solution of a large isolated vaulted
building that must support itself with a proper inner articulation. Given this kind of
problem, it becomes impossible to consider the masonry mass as a mere homogeneous
limit, and its articulation necessarily influences the architectural composition15.
The Pantheons huge masonry mass is indeed articulated, towards the inner space,
by a series of niches excavated in the walls thickness. Give the huge dimension of the
central space and of the structures required for its support, we may in this case speak
of actual habitable rooms completely drowned beyond the walls edge.
Besides the expressive and compositional implications, this also entails a pecu-
liar spatial solution that creates a central, hierarchically prevailing, space bordered
by an array of minor spaces directly dependent on it and exclusively inward-look-
ing, following a model that we may define of central development or of centripetal
character. It may be interesting to note that a wide catalogue of Roman or late
Roman spaces may be related to such a model.
A somewhat different approach can be found in the solution to the same prob-
lems provided by Swabian architecture ten centuries later, particularly developed
due to the incredibly intense building activity promoted by Frederick the II during

I macchinari

Thickening of horizontal elements
It is quite obvious that the period over which Louis Kahn achieved a turning
point both in his professional career and in architectural history, was the 1951-1961
decade. Over that time-span, it is indeed evident how his patient and continuous
research of an architecture of hollow forms would lead him both away from the
modernist formal vocabulary on which he had based the entire early part of his
career and to develop a work that would be increasingly connected to the use and
control of mass and thickness.
By studying the main works and designs developed by Kahn over these ten years,
it is possible to see how such thickening process was gradually achieved through
three successive steps: first in the design of the horizontal elements of the building,
its floors; secondly, in the geometry of its supports, the pilasters; finally, in the
development of the buildings entire masonry envelope, or the continuous wall.
If the City Tower project in Philadelphia is paradigmatic in that it summarizes
the peculiar traits of the issue we are discussing, the first building where Kahn
expressed such tendency towards the thickening of constructions typical elements
