REDEMPTION
INTRODUCTION
My dear Confreres:
For with the LORD is kindness, with him is full redemption
(Ps. 130, 7).
1. It is a considerable challenge to share with you these reflections
on the theme of redemption. I say this not simply because it is
difficult and demanding. The task is daunting because to speak or
write about redemption is to touch the very heart of our Christian
faith and, clearly, the life-giving center of the Congregation it-
self. Over the past year, many confreres have shared their think-
ing on this subject and have offered me a wealth of notes and
suggestions. The members of the General Council worked very
hard and long in composing their own contribution, while asking
me to write the final version. To all, my gratitude: to you belongs
the credit for the depth and theological wisdom in this document.
But, in the end, I assume the responsibility for putting it all to-
gether from the pastoral perspective of my office. This means
also that I accept liability for any weakening of the original con-
tributions and for any other shortcomings you may find in it.

13. For Alphonsus the whole of the Christian life is centered in Jesus
and his work of redemption. If we want to understand the spiritual
insight of our Founder, then I believe the critical focus is not upon
redemption as an abstract category but rather upon the person of
the Redeemer. For Alphonsus, a Christological approach is indis-
pensable, for it is the Redeemer who reveals redemption. The Re-
deemer represents the true character of God in all its fullness. Who
is God? What does God think about human beings? Alphonsus
joins his voice to Jesus in the Gospel of John: “For God so loved
the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes
in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did
not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the
world might be saved through him” (Jn. 3, 16-17).
The Redeemer is love itself, which desires to touch and transform
every human being so that all may find true happiness and fulfill-
ment. Jesus has come that all “might have life and have it more
abundantly” (Jn. 10, 10). However, not sparing any effort to love
and be loved, the Redeemer “empties himself”, first in the incarna-
tion and then in death, even “death on a cross”. The choice of the
Redeemer for the way of absolute kenosis is aimed at dethroning
all false images of God while cracking the wall of human pride
and suspicion about God and God’s plan for us.
The mystery of redemption is not that we become worthy of God
but rather that, in Christ Jesus, God makes us worthy of himself
(Col. 1, 12-14; Eph. 1, 3-14). This understanding of God’s desire
to transform human beings in love is an important element of the
vision of Alphonsus. Redemption becomes the free surrender of a
person in wonder and gratitude to the love of God that is given in
Christ Jesus by means of the Spirit.
14. An understanding of the Redeemer as the compassion of God that
expresses itself in kenosis colors the promotion by Alphonsus of
traditional devotions of his time. Crib, Cross, Eucharist and Mary

The Spirit of the Lord... has anointed me to bring the good news
to the poor.19
Alphonsus establishes the clear link between the person of Jesus
and the Congregation: it is found in the reason for the coming of
the Redeemer.
The mission of Redemptorists is to bring people to the crucial
point of Christian life: the love of God that is powerfully revealed
in Jesus Christ. At the center of the life and ministry of the Con-
gregation is the very mystery of redemption. We Redemptorists
were born in the heart of an ardent disciple of Jesus, who burned
with zeal for the redemption of all with a special preference for the
abandoned poor.
Through Jesus the redemptive love of the Father reaches each indi-
vidual person. In Alphonsus’ perspective God’s love is not
preached abstractly but through stories that illustrate the personal
love of God towards each and invites from each a response of con-
version. The transformation of the world is brought about by a per-
sonal change of heart and obedience to the plan of God as revealed
in Jesus. As human beings we also have a basic need to belong, to
be part of a larger project which takes us beyond our personal little
worlds. The redeeming love of God brings about a change in our
relationships, uniting us as communities in the Church (Con. 12),
which entrusts to us the mission of communicating to others the
love we experience in the Redeemer.
17. Alphonsus discerned as his own the vocation to continue the work
of Jesus the Redeemer in preaching the Good News to the most
abandoned poor. His mission was to remain in permanent solidar-
ity with them. His own experience of God was intimately linked

19. In the first part of this letter, I have tried to highlight some ele-
ments which I consider significant in a Redemptorist approach to
redemption. These points can root us solidly in a tradition that
continues to nurture our missionary vocation. But these roots
must settle in new soil today. One could say that we find
ourselves at the conclusion of the historical period that was just
assuming concrete shape during Alphonsus’ life time. The end of
one era and the beginning of another presents new problems, new
concerns, new questions and new opportunities.

world and the need to discover the most effective means for be-
coming witnesses of plentiful redemption.25
31. A contemplative look at our world leads us to glimpse the forces
that militate against the Kingdom of God, such as a culture of
death that prizes power, pleasure and possessions to the point of
the dehumanization, enslavement and wholesale displacement of
entire societies. The proclamation of abundant redemption is a call
to see this broken world from a contemplative perspective that al-
lows us to discover the ways of the Spirit. We learn to recognize
the presence of signs of redemption that allow us to continue with
hope and determination. If we have the audacity to ask whether the
mission of Jesus makes a difference in our world, then we also
need the courage to assume a contemplative stance and permit that
the Spirit promised by Jesus will guide us to all truth (Jn. 16, 13).
32. Let me attempt to summarize the reflection to this point. Our discus-
sion began with the assertion that Redemptorists have a particular
way of understanding the saving action of God in Jesus Christ. This
vision is based on the experience of God that informed the pastoral
practice of Alphonsus Liguori. We have not attempted to treat the
traditional ways that dogmatic theology has presented redemption,
not because that debate is unimportant, but rather because the Gen-
eral Chapter hoped that the present communication might serve as
an instrument of discernment and contribute to revitalizing the
apostolic life of the Congregation.26 To this end, I have tried to an-
chor the reflection in the experience of our Founder, which gave en-
ergy and urgency to his own preaching, writing and even the de-

CONVERSION TO COMPASSION
THAT MANIFESTS ITSELF IN KENOSIS
38. Bishop Pedro Casaldáliga invites us to think also with our feet.
That is, eventually our reflection should translate into action that is
consistent with our deepest values. If we want to grasp how Al-
phonsus understands the Redeemer and his saving work, we must
always include the people, especially the abandoned poor. As we
have seen, our Founder identifies his Congregation with the mis-
sion of Jesus, who comes to announce good news to the poor. Con-
stitution 5 reproduces this rapport, noting that “evangelization in
the strict sense together with the choice in favor of the poor is the
very reason why the Congregation exists in the Church, and is the
badge of its fidelity to the vocation it has received”.
39. Alphonsus did not have simply a theoretical appreciation of the
special link between the Redeemer and the abandoned. His first
biographer captures in dramatic terms how our Founder “thought
with his feet” – even when he was actually riding a mule! In a
poignant description of his exodus from Naples in 1732, Alphon-
sus is depicted as making to Jesus a complete sacrifice of that
city and its glory in order to live and die in the countryside, sur-
rounded by unlettered peasants and shepherds.31 Commenting on
this event, Théodule Rey-Mermet argues that the beginning of
our Congregation was first and foremost the death and rebirth of
one man: “the distinguished Neapolitan gentleman no longer ex-
isted and a poor man among the poor took his place”.32 The

I redentori-
Come

He-

This anniversary also recalls the countless men and women who have
laboured with Redemptorists in building the Ukrainian Catholic Church

privileged to witness firsthand the fine spirit of cooperation that marks
our parishes, shrine church and apostolates like the Welcome Home. To-

Him, we will be one with each other and bear lasting fruit.
May all who share in this anniversary be emboldened to carry the love

Dear Confreres,
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
I am happy to write to the Redemptorists missionaries in Africa as well as
the superiors of the mother provinces in other parts of the world. This let-
ter intends to highlight the most important decisions that were taken dur-
ing the regional meeting at Ibadan, Nigeria, 26 November – 5 December
2006 and offer a summary of the subsequent reflection by the General
Council in the course of its extraordinary session, 11-21 December 2006.
As you may know, in March 2006, the General Council decided to
broaden participation in the most recent meeting of the Region of Africa in
order to include the superiors of the mother provinces in Europe, Latin
America, Asia and North America. The idea was to expand the discussion
of the most important challenges that the Congregation is presently facing
in Africa. As a result, during the first four days of the regional meeting, the
African superiors met together with members from the General Council
and the issues that were debated included topics that appeared on the
agenda of the other five regional meetings in 2006. The superiors of the
mother provinces participated in the final four days of the regional meeting
and the agenda included the questions of restructuring, initial and continu-
ing formation as well as financial support for our mission in this Region.
Before summarizing some of the decisions taken, I would like to report
that the General Council was very satisfied with the work of this regional
meeting. We express particular gratitude to the Redemptorists of Nigeria
for the thorough preparation of the gathering and the attention that was
given to the thirty participants. I also thank the superiors themselves,
those coming from different parts of Africa as well as those from other
84 Analecta C.Ss.R 2006-2007
Regions; their good will and industry contributed to the successful out-
come of the meeting.
What was decided at the meeting regarding the issues of restructuring,
formation and finances? The participants were aware of the need to find a
new structure for the mission of the Congregation in Africa. The interim
report of the Commission for Restructuring was studied, especially the
different models proposed for consideration by the Congregation at the
midpoint of the sexennium. Particular interest was expressed in the mod-
els of a conference and a network. A conference offers the advantages of a
structure that would encourage closer cooperation among the Redemptor-
ists in Africa and provide for some regional decision-making, while a net-
work that would include the African units and their mother provinces as
well as other interested units of the Congregation could channel more ef-
fectively our solidarity and help to promote even greater cooperation
among confreres.
To carry forward the reflection on restructuring, the participants in the ex-
panded regional meeting decided to set in place an interim body called the
Commission for Africa, to be composed of five members: the general
consultor from Africa, the two sub-regional coordinators and two other
members to be named by the General Council. During its recent ex-
traordinary meeting, the General Council decided to add Father João Pedro
Fernandes, the superior of the Vice-Province of Angola and Father
Georges Darlix, vicar general emeritus and member of the Province of
Lyon-Paris, to the three ex officio members: Fathers Athanase Nsiamina,
José Collado (Burkina-Niger) and Seán Wales (South Africa). I am grate-
ful to Fathers Fernandes and Darlix for their willingness to serve on the
Commission.
The regional meeting proposed that the Commission for Africa work to
carry forward the search for new structures in Africa, while implementing
the different accords reached in the areas of initial formation and economic
solidarity. It is expected that the Commission will submit for the approval
of the General Council by-laws or statutes that will govern its work. The
II. ATTI DEL GOVERNO GENERALE 85
General Council will also approve a budget to deal with the operating ex-
penses of the Commission. The participants asked that the general con-
sultor have the responsibility of convening the first meeting. Father
Nsiamina plans the first encounter of the Commission for April 2007.
The regional meeting also made admirable progress toward greater co-
operation in the critical area of initial and permanent formation. Agree-
ment was reached on a number of clear criteria to guide the formation of
Redemptorists in Africa; there was also accord on joint novitiates as well
as programs to assist young confreres during preparation for final vows
and their eventual transition to full-time ministry. Further discussion is
needed regarding the theological formation of students in the Anglophone
units; to this end, a recommendation to the General Government will be
given by 1 January 2008. The participants asked the General Government
to approve the appointment of formators who will be proposed for collab-
orative programs of formation in the next triennium; the idea behind this
request was to encourage stability and accountability in programs that are
shared by several units. The Commission for Africa is expected to play a
crucial role, both in implementing the decisions already approved as well
as in the resolution of outstanding questions.
Finally, the extended regional meeting examined the question of greater
economic solidarity in support of our mission in Africa. The meeting ap-
proved the establishment of a supplementary fund to help units with the
cost of first formation. The supplementary fund would be constituted by
contributions from units in the African network and administered by a
committee to be named by the Commission for Africa. The General
Council chose not to approve the immediate implementation of the pro-
posed supplementary fund. Instead, the Council asked for further study of
the economic reality of our mission in Africa, requesting that the Eco-
nome General, the General Secretariat for Finances and the Commission
for Africa offer their opinions on the scope of the fund and ways to con-
struct it before the Council approves its implementation.
86 Analecta C.Ss.R 2006-2007
As you can see, the African regional meeting was not limited to talk but
rather a high degree of consensus was reached on important issues for the
future of our mission. The participants left the meeting with the belief that
together we charted a course for years to come. It is my intention that Africa
will continue to figure prominently in the program of the General Council
and I trust that we will have the valuable help of other bodies, such as the
Commission for Restructuring and the Commission for Africa as well as
advise and prayerful support from all Redemptorists, especially those now
announcing the Good News to the poor in that immense continent.
Dear Confreres,
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his
great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrec-
tion of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperish-
able, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you who by the power
of God are safeguarded through faith, to a salvation that is ready to be
revealed in the final time (1 Pt 1, 3-5).
I am happy to write this letter at the height of the season of Easter, a
time when the Church contemplates the abundant life that God has be-
stowed on us in the paschal mystery of Jesus. These days are also a time

Consecrated Life
A second theme that presented itself in both the regional meetings and
the extraordinary sessions of the General Council is the question of the
90 Analecta C.Ss.R 2006-2007
For the moment, I ask all the units of the Congregation to begin to think
about this year and, particularly, to plan how the 275th anniversary of
the founding of the Congregation might be marked among you. You
could begin to consider how possible events, such as retreats, assem-
blies, monthly days of recollection, special vocational promotion, etc.,
might be incorporated into the plan for the year in your unit. The Gener-
al Council hopes that the Congregation might see this project as a time
of special grace and “a year acceptable to the Lord” (Lk. 4, 19).
Africa
The future of our Congregation in Africa continues to be a priority for
the present General Council. We dedicated the first six months of 2004
to visiting all of the units in that continent and, since we recognize the
important work of our confreres as well as the serious challenges now
faced by African Redemptorists, that Region remains a regular theme
for discussion at our extraordinary sessions.
In March 2006 the General Council decided to enlarge the participation
at the mid-sexennial meeting for the Region of Africa that was to be
held in Ibadan, Nigeria, 26 November – 5 December 2006. Our idea
was to expand the discussion of the most important challenges that the
Congregation is presently facing in Africa. As a result, during the first
four days of the regional meeting, the African superiors met together
with members from the General Council and the issues that were de-
bated included topics that appeared on the agenda of the other five re-
gional meetings in 2006. The superiors of the mother provinces particip-
ated in the final four days of the regional meeting and the agenda in-
cluded the questions of restructuring, initial and continuing formation as
well as financial support for our mission in this Region.
I believe that the meeting opened new possibilities that will strengthen
our missionary service. The participants considered the advantages of
new models that had been proposed by the Commission for Restructur-
ing, especially those of a conference and a network. It was decided to

Queridos Cohermanos:
gracias a Dios.
no vosso País.
res do apostolado. Gostaria de salientar principalmente a pregação das
Missões populares, o cuidado pastoral das paróquias e as obras sociais. O
Nesta significativa oportunidade, expresso o meu agradecimento sincero e

Dear confreres:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ
through whom we have received the grace of apostleship (Rm. 1, 5).
The General Council would like to invite all the members of the Con-
gregation to join in a year of intense reflection on the apostolic life of
Redemptorists. Constitution 1 reminds us that this life comprises at
one and the same time a life specially dedicated to God and a life of
missionary work. Our invitation is that Redemptorists make a particu-
lar effort to consider the first element in this essential formula, that is,
a life specially dedicated to God, one that begins with our religious
profession, which is the definitive act of the whole missionary life of
Redemptorists (Constitution 54).
II. ATTI DEL GOVERNO GENERALE 99
help the local communities examine the meaning of our religious pro-
fession today. Some suggested activities are interprovincial or regional
meetings on the meaning of Redemptorist consecrated life, including
the vocation of Redemptorist Brothers, days of prayer with other reli-
gious, laity and young people, workshops on the meaning of our vows
in a particular cultural context, provincial retreats and monthly days of
recollection that progressively examine important aspects of our con-
secration, especially the theology of our Constitutions and Statutes and
using the means of social communication to deepen the appreciation
for consecrated life in the Church and world.
Will a focus on our religious profession be a dramatic departure from the
theme of this sexennium, Giving our Lives for Abundant Redemption? Not
at all, since the plentiful love of God that has been poured out in Jesus
Christ is the necessary starting point for any consideration of our response.
Together with Saint Paul, we strive to say, “I still live my human life, but it
is a life of faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave his life for me”
(Gal 2:20). Only the awareness of being infinitely loved can help us over-
come every personal and institutional difficulty. The abundant love of God
urges us to strive to respond generously through the total gift of ourselves
as expressed in the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
May this year assist the Congregation in living our vocation in creative fi-
delity.
Fraternally,
Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R.

ce stanno collaborando a vari livelli: formazione, Commissioni miste,
Sussistono pregiudizi culturali e condi-
Come i confratelli san-
In Cristo Redentore
Last week the General Council was happy to review the latest document
from the Commission for Restructuring, Proposals for the XXIV Gener-
al Chapter 2009. The consultors join me in thanking the members of the
Commission for their continuing work in the important project of re-
structuring. We believe that the Commission is fulfilling the intention of
the XXIII General Chapter and preparing the way for a fruitful reflec-
tion that should result in some useful decisions by the next Chapter.
Positive Aspects
The Council is impressed by the lean design of the document and its ca-
pacity to express the essential elements of the research and reflection of
the Commission to date. The addition of “association” to the original
five principles of restructuring is seen as a positive development and re-
ceived strong endorsement from the Council. The proposals regarding
the membership and process of future General Chapters are clear and
should provoke substantial discussion in the Congregation.
Areas of Concern
Members of the Council did not view favorably some changes from
the content of the previous text, Restructuring: A Work in Progress.
II. ATTI DEL GOVERNO GENERALE 105
Thank you for your consideration and for your generous service to the
Congregation.
Fraternally,
Dear Confrere:
This letter presents an important document from the Commission on Re-
structuring. Allow me to offer a few remarks that hope to explain the ori-
gin of the text and the reason for sending it to you now.
The present draft of the document, Proposals for the XXIV General
Chapter 2009, was written by the members of the Commission for Re-
structuring during their most recent meeting (June 2007). The draft
was received by the General Council in August and we were able to
study it during our extraordinary meeting, 10-15 September. Follow-
ing our meeting, I wrote to the president of Commission to summarize
the initial impressions of the General Council. In that letter, I stated
our assumption that the Commission did not intend for the document
to be published to the Congregation until it had been reviewed by the
Commission at its next plenary meeting, which is scheduled for
December 2007.
However, it has come to my attention that some Regions of the Con-
gregation have already received this draft and already have offered
suggestions to the Commission. In the effort to ensure that no unit will
be excluded from any stage of the process of reflection on the impor-
tant question of restructuring, I have asked that the document be trans-
lated into the principal languages of the Congregation and sent to the
units as quickly as possible.
I believe that this document and any subsequent drafts should receive
the widest possible circulation in the Congregation so that suggestions
or further questions might be submitted to the Commission for its con-
sideration. I admit that it will not be possible for many units to contrib-
ute to the work of the Commission before its meeting next month.
However, I do ask that every community of your unit receive a copy of
108 Analecta C.Ss.R 2006-2007
A carta saiu daqui no
Fraternalmente,
John Paul II: that “in an age characterized by the globalization of prob-
lems and the return of the idols of nationalism, international Institutes
especially are called to uphold and to bear witness to the sense of com-
munion between peoples, races and cultures” (Vita Consecrata, 51).
The General Council expects the newest Vice-Province to bear unmis-
takable witness to such communion.
Of course, you are not on your own. The Province of Denver has made
it clear that it intends to continue in close communion with you. Con-
freres from the other units of Africa hope to share their particular gifts
with the confreres of Nigeria. The General Council remains very inter-
ested in the Vice-Province and expects to receive soon a report of the
last regional assembly as well as the first assignments made by your
government.
May Saint Alphonsus and all the saints and beati intercede for you in a
special way as you begin this new identity. May Our Mother of Perpetu-
al Help protect you and lead you always to a deeper love of her Son.
Fraternally in the most Holy Redeemer,
Your Eminence:
Having reviewed all the facts in the petition, I wish to give my unequi-
vocal support to this request. Furthermore, I am prepared to see that
the temporary goods of the Monastery are disbursed in accord with the
Rule of the Sisters (General Statute 0147).
Liebe Schwestern:
Gnade und Friede von Gott, unserem Vater, und dem Herrn Jesus Chris-
tus!
Oktober in unserem Exerzitienhaus in
