PTFE
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a high molecular weight polymer, one of the most versatile plastic materials known and useful for a large range of products for applications excluded to other materials. The most outstanding characteristics are: - - - - - - high heat resistance high resistance to chemical agents and solvents high antiadhesiveness high dielectric properties low friction coefficient non-toxicity.
PTFE is generally considered a thermoplastic polymer; at 327C it retains a very high viscosity, thus requiring particular transformation techniques for manufacturing of finished and semi-finished goods. PTFE can be used in a temperature range from -200C to +260C.
During more than 35 years, GAPI has developed manufacturing processes and production control techniques to insure the highest quality PTFE products in the market.

PTFE
1.3 Dilatazione
1.3 Expansion
The linear thermal expansion coefficient varies with the temperature. In addition, because of the orientation caused by the working process, the PTFE pieces are in general anisotropic; in other words, the coefficient of expansion varies also in relation to direction.

PTFE
3.2 Flexibility
PTFE is quite flexible and does not break when subjected to stresses of 0,7 N/mm2 according to ASTM D 790. Flexural modulus is about 350 to 650 N/mm2 at room temperature, about 2000 N/mm2 at -80C, about 200 N/mm2 at 100C and about 45 N/mm2 at 260C.
3.5 Durezza
3.5 Hardness
The hardness Shore D, measured according to the method ASTM D 2240, has values comprised between D50 and D60. According DIN 53456 (load 13,5 Kg for 30 sec) results in an hardness range between 27 and 32 N/mm2.
3.6 Attrito
3.6 Friction
PTFE possesses the lowest friction coefficients of all solid materials, between 0.05 and 0.09: - the static and dynamic friction coefficients are almost equal, so that there is no seizure or stick-slip action
PTFE
- when increasing the load, the friction coefficient decreases until reaching a stable value - the friction coefficient increases with the speed - the friction coefficient remains constant at temperature variations.
3.7 Usura
3.7 Wear
The wear depends upon the condition of the other sliding surface and obviously depends upon the speed and loads. The wear is considerably reduced when adding suitable fillers to the PTFE (see filled PTFE).

Propriet elettriche
Electrical properties
PTFE is an excellent insulator and excellent dielectric as shown by the relative data reported in table 1, and maintains these characteristics throughout a large range of environmental conditions, temperatures and frequencies.

4.3 Arc-resistance
PTFE has a good resistance to the arc. The arc resistance time according to ASTM D 495 is 700 sec.. After a prolonged exposure there are no signs of surface charing.
Propriet di superficie
Surface properties
The molecular configuration of PTFE brings to its surfaces a high anti-adhesiveness. For the same reason these surfaces are hardly wettable, the contact angle with water is about 110 and it is possible to affirm that, beyond a surface tension of 20 dine/cm, the liquid no longer wets the PTFE. A special etching treatment renders the surfaces bondable and wettable.

The addition of fillers to the PTFE improves or modifies its properties depending upon the nature and quantity of filler: - remarkable increase in wear resistance - decrease of deformation under load and of creep - reduction of thermal expansion - some types of filler increase the thermal and electric conductivity.
Filled PTFE is often not as strong and resilient as virgin PTFE. The filler limits the resistance to chemical agents and the electrical properties.
13
Filler functions
1.2 Carbone
1.2 Carbon
Carbon is added to the PTFE in a percentage by weight between 10 and 35%, along with small percentage of graphite. Also, the carbon tends to improve to a considerable degree, wear and deformation strength, while leaving practically unchanged the chemical resistance, but substantially modifying the electrical properties.
1.3 Bronzo
1.3 Bronze
Bronze, when used as filler, is added in percentages of weight between 40 and 60%. Bronze filled PTFE has the best wear properties, remarkable deformation strengths and good thermal conductivity, but poor electrical characteristics and chemical resistance.
14
PTFE
1.4 Grafite
1.4 Graphite
The percentages used vary between 5 and 15%. Graphite lowers the coefficient of friction and is, therefore, often added to other types of filled PTFE for improving this property. It improves the deformation under load, strength and, to a minor degree, the wear properties.
2.1 Usura
2.1 Wear
The contact between two sliding surfaces, because of the inevitable friction generated in the contact zone, results in a certain wear whose magnitude depends on load, speed and time of sliding contact. Theoretically, between these parameters and the resulting wear exists a relation proportional to: R = KPVT
where, expressed in the measuring units of table 2: R = wear in mm P = specific load in N/mm2 (referring to the surface - x l - in case of bussoles, nipples, etc.) V = sliding speed in m/sec T = time in hrs K = wear factor in mm3 sec/Nmh
The value of the factor PV after which the coefficient of wear loses its linear behavior, assuming remarkable values with the system passing from weak to strong wear condition, is known as PV limit. This PV limit and the wear factor are, therefore, characteristic parameters of each material. In practice, however, it can be easly perceived, the wear factor and the PV limit of the same filled material can vary also with the nature, the hardness and the surface finish of the other contact partner with the presence, or not, of cooling and/or lubricating fluids.
PTFE
15
The PV limit indicated in table 2, increases with sliding speed, with other factors like the geometry of the sliding system and the temperature. The values given in table 2 refer to dry friction.
Propriet termiche
Thermal properties
The thermal expansion of filled PTFE is in general lower to that of unfilled PTFE and always greater in the direction of the moulding than crosswise. The thermal conductivity is superior to that of unfilled PTFE, particularly when using fillers having a high thermal conductivity of their own. Filled PTFE therefore have better thermal properties than the unfilled ones.
16
PTFE
Propriet elettriche
Electrical properties
These properties depend to a large degree upon the nature of the filler. Only PTFE filled with glass fibre possess good dielectric properties, even though different from those of unfilled PTFE. For example, the volume and surface resistivity, the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor vary lagerly with the variation of the humidity and frequency.
