2. A direct-object pronoun precedes the conjugated verb. In a negative sentence,

non precedes the object pronoun.
Io cucino il pollo e lo mangio. I cook the chicken and eat it.
Professore, non La sento. Professor, I can’t hear you.
Non ti piace la carne e non la mangi. You don’t like meat and don’t eat it.

3. When used with an infinitive, the direct-object pronoun attaches to the end of
the infinitive.The final e of the infinitive is dropped.
— È importante mangiare le verdure? — Is it important to eat vegetables?
— Sì, è importante mangiarle. — Yes, it’s important to eat them.
— Bisogna comprare il latte? — Do we have to buy milk?
— Sì, bisogna comprarlo. — Yes, we have to buy it.
If the infinitive is preceded by a modal verb (volere, dovere, or potere), the
object pronoun may either attach to the infinitive or precede the conjugated verb.
— Vuoi vedere il film? — Do you want to see the film?
— Sì, voglio vederlo. / Sì, lo — Yes, I want to see it.
voglio vedere.
— Devo finire gli spinaci? — Must I finish the spinach?
— Sì, devi finirli. / Sì, li devi finire. — Yes, you must finish it.
— Posso aprire la finestra? — Can I open the window?
— Sì, puoi aprirla. / Sì, la puoi aprire. — Yes, you can open it.

4. Some direct-object pronouns elide with verbs that begin with a vowel and with
forms of avere beginning with h. Lo and la normally elide; li and le never do.
— Assaggi il melone? — Sì, l’assaggio. (Lo assaggio.)
— Aiuti Flavia con i compiti? — Sì, l’aiuto sempre. (La aiuto.)
— Lei mi invita? — Sì, t’invita! (Sì, ti invita.)
— Adori le lasagne? — Sì, le adoro!
— Marco ordina i ravioli. — Li ordina.

5. Unlike their English counterparts, the verbs cercare (to look for), ascoltare
(to listen to), guardare (to look at), and aspettare (to wait for) are used without
prepositions and thus take direct objects.
