la Sicilia non possibile farsi unidea dellItalia. Questo scriveva Goethe nel 1787 nel suo Viaggio in Italia, descrivendo la pi estesa regione italiana situata proprio nel cuore del Mediterraneo e con una storia caratterizzata da un continuo alternarsi di invasioni e dominazioni: dai greci che la colonizzarono nellVIII secolo ai romani, che ne fecero la prima provincia dellimpero. E poi ci furono gli arabi e i normanni, gli angioini e gli aragonesi. Ma non finisce qui: nel 1713 lisola fu data ai Savoia che a sua

volta la cedettero allAustria in cambio della Sardegna. Poi arrivarono i Borbone che nel 1816 costituirono il regno delle Due Sicilie che venne (finalmente) unito a quello di Savoia (e quindi, si pu dire, allItalia) nel 1860. Con un passato cos, chiaro che la Sicilia e i suoi abitanti non possono rientrare in schemi tradizionali: troppe culture hanno lasciato le loro vestigia e la loro anima su questa terra e il risultato un luogo magico, dove nulla dato per scontato, dove allegria e tristezza, coraggio e paura, vigore e dolcezza si intrecciano con risultati inaspettati, dove larte un tuttuno con la natura e il ricordo del mare e la forza di uno sguardo possono seguirci per una vita intera. La Sicilia cos: tutto. Ma andiamo con ordine. Natura. La natura in Sicilia offre ogni tipo di paesaggio: ovviamente c il mare, bellissimo e ormai conosciuto

in tutto il mondo, ma qui ci sono anche le montagne, come il Pizzo Carbonara che tocca quasi i duemila metri daltezza, e i vulcani come lEtna, lo Stromboli o Vulcano. Ci sono anche le isole con gli scogli e le spiagge che per hanno la particolarit di avere colori diversi, dallambrato al bianco al rosa. Vegetazione mediterranea, certo, ma non solo di fichi dindia e palmizi ma anche di bounganville, aranceti e vigne. Dellenogastronomia ovviamente non parliamo: troppe cose e sicuramente una pi gustosa dellaltra. Allora lasciamoci alla scoperta dellarte, che qui copre solo un arco di oltre duemila anni. La lista continuerebbe, infinita, e forse non resta che andare in questa bella Sicilia per toccare con mano un vero compendio delluniverso.

Without Sicily, Italy leaves no ima-

ge in the soul. Sicily is the key to everything. This is what Goethe wrote in 1787 in his Italian Journey, describing what is Italys largest region. Sicily is located in the heart of the Mediterranean and has a history of continuously alternating invasions and dominations - from the Greeks who colonized it in the eighth century to the Romans, who made it into the first province in the Empire. Then there were the Arabs and Normans, the Angevins and Aragonese. But it doesnt end there. In 1713 the

island was given to the House of Savoy which in turn yielded it to Austria in exchange for Sardinia. Then the Bourbon Kings arrived and in 1816 constituted the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, which was (finally) united with that of the House of Savoy (practically, it can be said, to Italy) in 1860. With such a rich past it is clear that Sicily and its people cannot be made to fit into a simple category, because too many cultures have left their traces and their soul upon this land. The result is magic, where nothing is taken for granted, where happiness and sadness, courage and fear, vigor and sweetness are intertwined with unexpected results. Art is one with nature and the sea, and the power of a glance can accompany you for an entire lifetime. Sicily is this. It is everything. But let us proceed in order. Nature. Nature in Sicily offers all kinds of landscapes. Obviously

theres the sea, beautiful and world-famous, but there are also mountains, such as the Pizzo Carbonara which rises almost two-thousand meters, and the volcanoes like Etna, Stromboli or Vulcano. There are also the islands with their boulders and their multi-colored beaches, from amber to white to pink. Mediterranean plants-not just fichi dindia (prickly pears) and date palms but also bouganvillea, orange groves and grapevines. The wine and food are of course a given-- too many things and surely one tastier than the next. We could dedicate our time to the discovery of art which covers a period of two thousand years. The list could go on forever, and perhaps all there is to do is to go to this beautiful Sicily and see for ourselves a true compendium of the universe.

incomincia a nordovest dellisola, da Palermo, citt viva e ospitale. Passeggiando per le strade palermitane ci si meraviglia nel vedere come il passato si mescola al presente in unarmonia perfetta. Questo accade, ad esempio, per la chiesa di San Giovanni degli Eremiti. Le sue cupole rosse ci riportano ai normanni e poi agli arabi che lavevano trasformata in moschea. Ma poi c anche la storia recente che si esalta nei numerosi elementi di architettura gotica. Se ci si incammina per il corso Vittorio Emanuele, poi, ci si imbatte in incantevoli palazzi liberty, boutique, piazze e chiese, anche se ci che attira di pi lattenzione la Cattedrale, dedicata alla patrona del luogo, Santa Rosalia. proprio qui che vengono conservate le sue reliquie. so edificio ha una lunga storia che inizia con loccupazione saracena e si protrae fino al XVIII secolo: durante tutti questi secoli la cattedrale stata pi volte rimaneggiata e restaurata fino a raggiungere laspetto attuale, magico ed imponente allo stesso tempo.

Our journey begins in north-western Si-

cily, in Palermo, a lively and welcoming city. Strolling along the streets of Palermo one wonders how the past and present have managed to mingle so harmoniously. This happens, for example, in the case of the church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti: its red cupolas take us back in history to the Normans and then to the Arabs who transformed it into a mosque.

Then a more recent history is exemplified in numerous elements of Gothic architecture. If you walk along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, you will encounter many enchanting Art-nouveau palazzi, boutiques, squares and churches. With it all, your attention will be drawn to the Cathedral, dedicated to the patron saint, Rosalia. It is here that her relics are kept. This majestic building has a long history that begins with the Saracen occupation and lasts until the eighteenth century. All throughout these centuries the cathedral has been reworked and restored many times thus taking on its present form - magical and imposing at the same time.
