SIRACUSA

Siracusa una citt tutta da visitare ma bisogna prendersi il tempo necessario per respirare la sua atmosfera e lasciarsi sedurre dalla sua bellezza. La sua piazza principale, ad esempio, ospita non solo il Duomo (che appare come un vero mosaico di elementi appartenenti a varie epoche) ma anche numerosi palazzi barocchi tra cui ricordiamo Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco con il suo giardino interno, di gusto squisitamente meridionale. Siracusa inoltre ha anche uninteressante particolarit rappresentata dalle latomie, ovvero cave di pietra poi trasformate in prigioni. Tra queste, la pi importante la Latomia del Paradiso (che oggi un delizioso giardino ricco di aranci, palme e magnolie) dove si trova il famoso Orecchio di Dioniso. Questa una cava la cui forma richiama un padiglione auricolare e deve il suo nome a Caravaggio che, durante il suo viaggio in Sicilia, rimase affascinato dalla leggenda secondo la quale Dionisio il Vecchio riusc a sentire non visto i progetti dei suoi nemici grazie allacustica perfetta della cava. Accanto allOrecchio di Dioniso si trova la Grotta dei Cordari che fino a poco tempo fa veniva utilizzata dai siracusani per intrecciare, appunto, corde e cordami: il suo ambiente fresco e la sua conformazione, infatti, la rendevano particolarmente adatta a questo genere di attivit.

Syracuse should be visited in its entirety. Enough time should be taken to really breathe in the atmosphere and be seduced by its beauty. The main square holds not only the Duomo, which looks like a veritable mosaic of elements from various periods, but also numerous Baroque palazzi. Among these we should mention Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco with its interior garden of truly Southern Italian style. Syracuse also has an interesting twist in the latomie, stone caves which were used as prisons. The most important is the Latomia del Paradiso (which is today surrounded by a lovely garden full of orange trees, palms and magnolia trees) where you can find the famous Orecchio di Dioniso (Ear of Dionysus). This ear-shaped cave owes its name to Caravaggio who, during his travels to Syracuse, was fascinated by the legend of how Dionysus the Elder was able to overhear his enemies plans without being seen, thanks to the acoustics of the cave. Alongside the Ear of Dionysus is the Grotta dei Cordari which until recent times was used by the people of Syracuse as a place to weave and braid ropes (Corde in Italian) because of the cool temperatures and its shape which made it particularly suitable to this kind of activity.
