è past simple di can + segue regole formazione dei modali (sport, ability come cook)
es affermativo: Al could swim when he was four (Al sapeva nuotare quando aveva quattro anni)
es negativo: I couldn’t do 50 press-ups a month ago (non potevo fare 50 flessioni un mese fa)
es interrogativo: Could you do weights after your operation? (potevi fare pesi dopo l’operazione?) +

si usa manage to/ didn’t manage to per parlare di una capacità in una situazione specifica nel
passato

stanotte?) + no verbi modali
quando si riferisce a capacità specifica passata che risultò da situazione particolare con managed to
e was/were able to ma non con could

Past perfect
Si usa per parlare di un’azione che successa prima di un’altra azione nel passato + corrisponde
all’italiano trapassato prossimo o trapassato remoto
Esempio: Had you done weights before joining the gym? (Avevi fatto prima di iscriverti alla
palestra?) Yes, but I hadn’t done any competitions (si, ma non avevo fatto delle gare)
Si forma cosi:
forma affermativa: soggetto + had/’d + participio passato
es: He’d gone to the gym the week before (lui era andato in palestra la settimana prima)
forma negativa: soggetto + had + not/n’t + participip passato
es: the therapy hadn’t prevented Matt’s illness (la terapia non aveva impedito a Matt di ammalarsi)

No + pronome soggetto + hadn’t es: No, they hadn’t
+ per parlare di due azioni successive in ordine cronologico si usa il past simple
Es: when Lisa met (past perfect) Paul, she had just finished (past simple) the university
Es: after they had found (past simple) a cure, he got (past perfect) better
frasi esempio:
1 quando sono arrivato al cinema, il film era appena finito
When I arrived at the cinema, the film had just finished
