singolare e plurale.

We use the verb ‘To be’ to talk about physical characteristics and conditions.

Check the meaning of the adjectives in the dictionary)

You are sad
He is tall
She is French
It is big
We are young
You are old
They are beautiful

We form the negative by adding ‘not’ after the verb
I (subj.) am (verb to be) not happy (adjective)

You are not sad

He is not tall
She is not French
It is not big
We are not young
You are not old
They are not beautiful

We form the interrogative by changing the order of the verb and the subject
Am I happy?
Are you sad?
Is he tall?
Is she French?
Is it big?
Are we young?
Are you old?
Are we beautiful?

In spoken English and in informal e-mails or letters we generally use the short form: I am =
I’m
He, She, It is= He’s, She’s, It’s
We are= we’re
You are= You’re
They are= they’re
In English you use this verb also to express the age:
I’m 34 (years old) Ho 34 anni

And in the following cases:

To be hungry (avere fame) Ex: Tom’s very hungry today
To be thirsty (avere sete) Ex: Are you thirsty?
To be cold (avere freddo) Ex: In winter we’re cold
To be hot (avere caldo) Ex: In Summer we’re hot
To be afraid (avere paura) Ex: She’s afraid of dogs
To be right (avere ragione) Ex: They’re absolutely right!
To be wrong (avere torto) Ex: I think she’s wrong
To be late (essere in ritardo) Ex: Am I late?
To be early (essere in anticipo)Ex: We are always early
To be in a hurry (avere fretta) Ex: Come on!we’re in a hurry!

My sister is quite tall,she is beautiful and very intelligent.
She’s 24 and she is afraid of dogs.
My father is an engineer,he’s always hungry and he likes eating.He is often nervous but he
is lovely with me and my sister.
My mother is an architect, she is extremely sincere and generous.
My grandparents are not very old, they are not Italian,they are French. They are slim and
sporty..I love my family!
