PRESENTAZIONE
OBIETTIVI
Il principale obiettivo di New Total Grammar è accompagnare in maniera graduale e sistematica gli
studenti dal livello A2 al livello B2, coniugando un’acquisizione progressiva delle regole ad una
solida competenza comunicativa. Per raggiungere tale scopo, il manuale è saldamente ancorato ad
una concezione dell’inglese come lingua viva, di cui sono illustrati, oltre alle strutture e alle
particolarità, gli usi diversi ed i relativi contesti di applicazione. Ciò avviene attraverso due
strumenti fondamentali: una teoria chiara ed esaustiva, corredata di numerosi esempi, ed un ricco
apparato di esercizi rigorosamente graduati e ben differenziati, tra i quali spiccano le attività di
tipo contrastivo ed una serie di open exercises di natura squisitamente comunicativa.
In questa nuova edizione, per facilitare il processo di comprensione e di apprendimento le units
sono state raggruppate in base a sedici categorie grammaticali ed è stato evidenziato in maniera
molto chiara il livello di appartenenza di ciascun argomento affrontato (A2, B1 o B2).
Il manuale mira inoltre ad essere un efficace strumento di preparazione delle certificazioni
Cambridge ESOL KET, PET e FCE, che infatti fungono da modello per un’ampia parte delle attività
inserite nelle sezioni riepilogo. (Gli esercizi in stile FCE riflettono, tra l’altro, gli aggiornamenti
previsti dal syllabus in vigore dal 2008.)
STRUTTURA
Il testo consta di 153 unità che, grazie al citato sistema di rinvii chiari ed immediati ai livelli
previsti dal CEFR, risultano particolarmente flessibili e adattabili. Questa impostazione, ben
evidenziata dal punto di vista grafico, consente infatti all’insegnante di creare percorsi di
apprendimento differenziati, basati sulle reali esigenze didattiche di ciascuna classe. Un’altra
novità offerta da New Total Grammar è, inoltre, l’accresciuta frequenza delle sezioni di riepilogo
rispetto alle singole sezioni: le revisions sono ora 51 e si trovano raggruppate sul fondo del volume.
Completano e arricchiscono la struttura di questa nuova edizione 19 dettagliate appendici ed un
glossario inglese/italiano relativo a tutti i termini inseriti nel testo.
AUDIO CD/CD-ROM
Il CD-ROM che accompagna il volume è un eccellente strumento di pratica ed approfondimento.
Tra le novità di cui è stato arricchito rientrano una parte audio, che offre la registrazione del testo
di numerosi esercizi del libro, una sezione di esercizi di livello A2 ed una in stile KET.
La parte ROM è dunque organizzata nelle seguenti sezioni:
• esercizi di livello A2
• esercizi di livello B1
• esercizi di livello B2
• Vocabulary (dedicata alle 14 aree lessicali previste dal CEFR)
• 2 Practice Tests sul modello dell’esame KET
• 2 Practice Tests sul modello dell’esame PET
• FCE Practice incentrata sul Paper 3, Use of English, in linea con il syllabus 2008.
Lo svolgimento delle attività è agevolato da frequenti help boxes, che contengono riepiloghi
grammaticali e suggeriscono strategie cognitive adeguate ai diversi casi.
MATERIALE ONLINE
New Total Grammar offre, inoltre, la possibilità di scaricare online una serie di test che l’insegnante
potrà utilizzare in classe ed un Grammar Check con chiavi di correzione che può funzionare da
test d’ingresso, di uscita o di verifica.

B Alla Unit 10 sono stati presentati esempi dell’uso del Present Continuous per descrivere
un’azione che sta avvenendo nel momento stesso in cui si parla. Il Present Continuous si
usa inoltre:
1 per chiedere come sta una persona durante una conversazione. Spesso si usano
diverse forme di domanda al tempo progressivo:
‘How are you?’ ‘How are you doing?’
‘How are you getting on?’ ‘How are things going?’
Il significato è praticamente lo stesso (Come stai?/ Come vanno le cose?) e si risponde
con:
‘Fine thanks, and you?’ ‘Very well, thanks.’
2 per parlare di tendenze o cambiamenti in generale:
The glaciers are melting and the climate is getting warmer every day.
I ghiacciai si stanno sciogliendo ed il clima si riscalda ogni giorno di più.
