Il libro non segue una progressione unità dopo unità dall’inizio alla fine: potrai utilizzare
di volta in volta quelle unità che rispondono alle tue esigenze. Per esempio, se hai difficoltà
nell’uso del PRESENT PERFECT (I have been / he has done ecc.), consulta l’Indice analitico
in fondo al libro per trovare la o le unità corrispondenti (per il PRESENT PERFECT,
Unità 17–20).
Non trascurare le nove Appendici nell’ultima parte del libro (pagine 249–259). Contengono
informazioni preziose su: forme attiva e passiva, verbi irregolari, verbi modali, forme contratte,
ortografia, equivalenti inglesi delle parole ‘molto’/ ‘troppo’/ ‘quanto’, locuzioni verbali (phrasal
verbs).
Dopo le Appendici, alle pagine 260–279, vi è una batteria di Esercizi supplementari per
l’approfondimento e il ripasso.
Il CD-ROM contiene un’altra serie di esercitazioni su alcuni dei problemi tipici dello studente
italiano.

Per l’insegnante
Essential Grammar in Use, Terza edizione italiana, è un testo di grammatica, non un corso
di lingua.
E’ rivolto a studenti che necessitano di una preparazione di base.
Soddisfa l’esigenza di avere testo di consultazione ed esercizi in un unico volume.
Utilizza la lingua italiana nella spiegazione degli argomenti grammaticali, evidenziando
i contrasti e le analogie tra le due lingue.
Può essere usato per lo studio individuale o come sussidio didattico in un corso di lingua.
Livello
Il libro è destinato a discenti che abbiano superato le prime fasi di un corso per principianti. Nel
suo insieme, risponde alle esigenze grammaticali dei livelli A1, A2 e B1 del Quadro comune
europeo di riferimento. Si presta, inoltre, a integrare la preparazione di discenti a livello B2 e a
colmare lacune riferite ad aree grammaticali specifiche.
Con le integrazioni apportate (vedi Cambiamenti rispetto alla seconda edizione), il testo
corrisponde ora al programma del biennio delle scuole superiori.
Le spiegazioni in italiano sono generalmente concise e semplici, poiché l’uso della terminologia
grammaticale è stato ridotto al minimo. Il lessico utilizzato negli esempi e negli esercizi
corrisponde ai livelli indicati.
Oltre ai Mini glossari che accompagnano gli esercizi, la nuova edizione comprende un Glossario
generale (pagine 280–284) per i vocaboli che potrebbero creare difficoltà ai principianti.
Uso
Il libro può essere usato nello studio individuale (vedi Per lo studente) oppure come sussidio
didattico in un corso di lingua. In un caso o nell’altro, può fungere da grammatica di base nei
primi anni di studio della lingua.
Nel caso sia adottato in un corso di lingua, potrà essere usato man mano per le attività di
rinforzo grammaticale oppure, successivamente, per il ripasso e il ricupero. Potranno servirsene
sia la classe nel suo insieme, sia singoli studenti che necessitino di sostegno supplementare.

Talora potrebbe essere utile leggere e commentare in classe le note di presentazione e
spiegazione (facciata di sinistra), ma è bene tenere presente che esse sono state concepite per
lo studio e la consultazione individuali. Nella maggior parte dei casi è preferibile che sia
l’insegnante a fornire la spiegazione dell’argomento nel modo a lei/lui più congeniale
assegnando quindi gli esercizi come compito a casa. La pagina di sinistra resterà a disposizione
dello studente per una successiva consultazione.
Alcuni insegnanti potrebbero decidere di destinare il manuale al ripasso e al ricupero. In tal caso
si guiderà il lavoro individuale indicando a singoli o a gruppi di studenti le unità adatte allo
scopo.
