A review of Edith's Diary by Patricia Highsmith

Edith is an apparently strong woman who is capable of facing up to

the hardships of life. Not that she has many, at least at the beginning:
a house with a garden, a son who is a little dull and wayward, an
affectionate husband. She's also politically committed and politically
correct, with clear ideas about ecology, abortion, divorce and all the
other hot topics of the time.
But as time goes by, her life changes radically: her marriage ends in
divorce and her husband marries a younger woman, her son (by now
almost a man) is still dull and insecure, and whats more Edith has to
look after her invalid uncle. So, to escape from boredom and gloom,
she begins to build another life in the pages of her diary: her son is a
brilliant engineer, with a beautiful wife and an adorable little girl,
while she devotes herself to sculpture and knits little jumpers for her
granddaughter.
The diary becomes a way of venting her feelings, a place where she
can write about the life Edith has always dreamed of, but never had.
And when she begins to confuse fantasy with reality and people find
her strange, only one thing can prove whether she's mad or not:
the diary.
Edith una donna apparentemente forte e capace di sopportare le avversit della vita.
Non che ne abbia molte, almeno all'inizio: una casa con giardino, un figlio un po'
ottuso e scapestrato, un marito che le vuole bene. anche politicamente impegnata e
politicamente corretta, con idee precise riguardo l'ecologia, l'aborto, il divorzio e tutti
gli altri temi caldi dell'epoca. Mentre gli anni passano, la sua vita per cambier
radicalmente: il marito divorzier per risposarsi con una donna pi giovane, il figlio
(oramai diventato quasi uomo) sar ancora ottuso e insicuro, ed in pi Edith dovr
badare allo zio invalido. Cos, per sfuggire alla noia ed al grigiore incomincia a
costruirsi un'altra vita nelle pagine del suo diario: il figlio un brillante ingegnere,
con una bella moglie e una bambina adorabile, mentre lei si dedica alla scultura e
sferruzza maglioncini per la nipotina. Il diario diventa un modo per sfogarsi, un luogo
dove scrivere della vita che Edith ha sempre sognato ma non ha mai avuto. E quando
comincer a confondere fantasia e realt, e la gente la trover strana, solo una cosa
pu dimostrare se pazza o meno: il diario.
