chapter 1 – Introduction about Care BMW Incinerator

1.1 Overview

Biomedical waste (BMW) is any waste produced during the diagnosis, treatment, or
immunization of human or animal research activities pertaining thereto or in the
production or testing of biological or in health camps. It follows the cradle to grave
approach, which is characterization, quantification, segregation, storage, transport, and
treatment of BMW.

The basic principle of good BMW practice is based on the concept of 3Rs, namely,
reduce, recycle, and reuse. The best BMW management (BMWM) methods aim at
avoiding generation of waste or recovering as much as waste as possible, rather than
disposing. Therefore, the various methods of BMW disposal, according to their
desirability, are prevent, reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, treat, and lastly dispose. Hence,
the waste should be tackled at source rather than “end of pipe approach.”

BMW treatment and disposal facility means any facility wherein treatment, disposal of
BMW or processes incidental to such treatment and disposal is carried out.

1.2 History and development

• Care BMW Incinerator is common bio medical waste treatment facility incorporated

Chapter 2 – Different departments

2.1 Introduction-:

• CARE B.M.W. Incinerator are Pioneer authorized company in Gujarat for Bio
Medical Waste Management and Handling and have a facility for disposal of all
categories of Bio Medical Waste.

• Care BMW Incinerator is a pioneer authorized company authorized by Gujarat

Pollution control board (GPCB) with the highest capacity of bio medical waste
incineration in Gujarat.

• Care BMW is specialized in the environmentally responsible management of Bio-

medical waste for the health care community.
2.2 Different Departments: In Care BMW Incinerator, there are
many departments for the management of bio medical waste which
are as follows:

• Incineration department
• Maintenance department
• Electrical department
• Human resource department
• Management department
• Autoclaving department
• Storage Area
• Accounts department
• shredder zone
• ETP area

2.2.1 Incineration department: Incineration is a controlled combustion

process where waste is completely oxidized, and harmful
microorganisms present in it are destroyed/ denatured under high
temperature. Temperature of primary chamber is maintained
between 800 to 850 degrees Celsius, while secondary chamber has
temperature between 1150 to 1200 degree Celsius.

2.2.2 Autoclaving department: Autoclaving is a low-heat thermal process where steam is

brought into direct contact with waste in a controlled manner and for sufficient
duration to disinfect the wastes as stipulated under the Bio-medical Waste
Management Rules. For ease and safety in operation, the system should be
horizontal type and exclusively designed for treatment of bio-medical waste. For
optimum results, pre-vacuum-based system be preferred against the gravity type
system. It shall have tamper-proof control panel with efficient display and recording
devices for recording critical parameters such as time, temperature, pressure, date
and batch number etc. as required under the BMWM Rules.

2.2.3 shredder zone: Shredding is a process by which waste are de-shaped or cut into
smaller pieces to make the wastes unrecognizable. It helps in prevention of reuse of
bio-medical waste and acts as identifier that the wastes have been disinfected and are
safe to dispose off. It is properly designed and covered to avoid spillage and dust
generation. Hopper and cutting chamber of the shredder is designed to accommodate
the waste bag full of bio-medical waste. It can shred waste sharps, syringes, scalpels,
blades, plastics, catheters, intravenous sets/ bottles, blood bags, gloves, bandages etc.
Capacity of the motor attached with the shredder is 10 KW for 250 kg.
2.2.4 ETP area: Effluent Treatment Plant: A suitable Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) is
installed to ensure that liquid effluent generated during the process of washing
containers, vehicles, floors etc. is treated and reused after treatment. Proper treatment
of wastewater shall be ensured in case of zero discharge by recirculation of treated
wastewater for scrubbing. ETP has treatment unit operations comprising collection
tank, O & G trap, chemical dosing cum mixing (Flash and slow), coagulation
chamber, primary settling tank (s), biological treatment process, secondary settling
tank, pressure filter and activated carbon filter, pH Correction tank (wherever
recirculation of treated water is practiced). PH Level is maintained to 7 for
neutralization of water.

2.2.5 Human resource Department-: This department focuses on hiring, Maintaining

and Motivating people in the organization. It generally focuses on people of the
organization. In this department HR manager is the head and based on interviews,
GD and Aptitude new people are recruited in the company for the job.

monitoring of the incinerator stack emission is installed by the CBWTF operator for the
parameters as stipulated to carry out stack emission monitored using continuous emission
monitoring system for the flue gas parameters such as CO2, O2, CO as well as primary &
secondary chamber temperatures, and records maintained.
❖ Practical experience

• During this industrial training, students are exposed to the real working
environment. This program will help students to gain valuable knowledge and
experience, build up their self-confidence, communication skill, creativity,
better judgment, and get used to the working pressure.

• Personal Development One of my strengths is willing to learn something new.

During the Industrial Training period, I will always take every opportunity to
learn something that I had never touch before. Besides, I always follow the
instruction given by supervisor and colleagues without any excuses.
Moreover, I will take initiative to ask question when I don’t understand.

I learn how the actual machine are work and how it made the product. Lot of
thinks learn like: -

1) How to make decision

2) How to define a problem

3) How can handle leadership

4) How to maintain machine and service time to time

6) How to implement a management system, etc.-

CONCLUSION

• It was wonderful learning experience at CARE BMW INCINERATOR for two

weeks in chhatral. I gained a lot of insight regarding almost every aspect of plant. I
was given exposure in almost all the departments at the plant. The friendly welcome
from all the employees is appreciating, sharing their experience, and giving their
peace of wisdom which, they have gained in long journey of work. I am very much
thankful for the wonderful facility from Mr. Harshad Patel. I hope this experience
will surely help me in my future and in shaping my career.
