Istruzioni per la determinazione della lunghezza massima - l max - della prolunga piede
in presenza di snodo sferico.
Le prolunghe piede consegnate in dotazione devono essere opportunamente dimensionate in funzione dell'altezza
del telaio dell'autocarro (vedi Service Manual).
In presenza di snodo sferico NON E' POSSIBILE sfruttare tutta la lunghezza originale - L1 - della prolunga.
La lunghezza della prolunga deve essere ridotta come da istruzioni.
Per determinare la lunghezza - l max - sfruttabile occorre procedere nel modo seguente:
l max = l1 - 100 mm.
ATTENZIONE: se non si osservano le istruzioni soprariportate vi è il rischio di danneggiare il martinetto
piede, con possibile conseguente ribaltamento dell'autocarro.

Instructions to set the maximum length - L max - of foot extension in case of ball
joint fitted.
Foot extensions delivered must be appropriately sized, depending on the height of the truck chassis (see Service
Manual).
In a ball joint is fitted, all the original length of the extension - L1 - CAN NOT BE used.
The length of the extension should be reduced as per instructions.
To set the correct length available - L max - follow the instructions below:
L max = L1 - 100 mm.
WARNING: If these instructions are not followed, there is the risk of damaging the foot cylinder, with
possible, consequent overturn of the truck.

Controls and instruments

Preamble

The controls for the devices and accessories installed on the crane are described in specific chapters
(see Chapters: “5 - Functional devices” “6 - Safety devices” and “7 - Accessories” and PEOGRESS
manual).
The safety devices, the controls and the accessories described in this part represent a general
list. The instructions to be considered must be referred to the crane model and to the bought
configuration. Refer to the instructions given in user manual supplied by the installer.
Cabin controls

In the vehicle cabin there are generally:


- control for engaging power take-off with indicator light (A) (compulsory in EEC countries) signal-
ling engagement/disengagement;
- engine rev regulator (B).

Notes The instruments in the cabin vary according to the truck and the crane installer’s
technical choices.

Crane/stabiliser controls activation selector


by radio control

Selector (V) installed on radiocontrol: it allows the activation of the crane movement controls (CRANE
position ), the activation of the stabilizing controls (STAB position) and activate an auxiliary function
(TRACKWALL)
In order to set the switch to one of the three available positions, pull it upwards and set it to the
required function.

To move the stabilizers act on the levers (A to D) and simultaneously on one of the levers (G
and H) of the radio control.
The symbols used in the levers, indicate the position of the stabilizer to be moved. To perform
the movements of stabilizationtwo actions are necessary:
Turn the selector V to the right.
Use the lever that corresponds to the stabilization element to be moved and at the same time act
on the lever (G) for the descent or rise of the feet or on the lever (H) for the exit and retraction of
the stabilizers.

Note: The direction of movement is determined by 1


the direction of levers A, B, C, D and E. The levers
G and H have the sole purpose of activation and so
the direction does not matter.

Electric controls

The crane has a series of panels with controls and display instruments.
Main panel
P “PROGRESS” main control panel

The operator panel is equipped with a video graphic display that allows immediate and
intuitive interaction with the operator by means of icons and message boxes.
With a simple touch of a finger on one of the four buttons below the display, you can easily
access the system and perform operations.

“Progress” control system is an electronic device that allows you to work safely with the
crane, by automatically determining the crane and limitations and the operating speed.

This chapter describes the system main controls, the complete operation is shown
in the specific attached manual provided “PROGRESS Crane Control System” and in
chapter “6 - Safety devices.”

Using selection button for radio-controlled stabilizers


The control station (radio control push-button


panel) is the same one that runs the crane AD00092_0

movements. Therefore the operator has


the opportunity and the obligation to
take a position that allows him to have
full control of the stabilizer elements on
both sides. U

- To extend the remote controlled


stabilizers, you need to press one of the
timed selection buttons (U (with a timer of
about 60 seconds) located on each side
of the truck.
If you do not press this button, the movement
of the outriggers are locked.
1- Press the selector button (U) on the side U
on which you wish to activate the stabiliz-
ers (the side in your line of vision).
2- Turn the selector (B2) to select the move-
ment of the stabilizers and feet jacks.
3- Turn the correct lever on the remote
control to extend the pre-selected sta-
bilizers.
4- If the preset time of the timed selector is
not sufficient to fully extend the stabiliz-

ers, you can press the button (U) again
to complete the action.

PROHIBITION
It is forbidden to let another operator
press the timed button (U).

It is forbidden to press the timed


button (U) on one side of the vehicle
and then move to the other side or to
a position where you do not have a

Radio-control

This chapter describes the main radio-control functions and controls. This chapter
describes the main controls and the main functions of the radio control. To have infor-
mation on the display placed on the radio control and on surfing the related screens,
see the specific manual attached provided “PROGRESS Crane Control System”.

caution
Once connected, it is forbidden to leave the push-button panel unguarded.

Should it be necessary to temporarily lay the push-button panel aside, you must:
- check that radio-control functioning is disengaged;
- place it in a protected place accessible only to authorised personnel.

Notes Always use the panel support strap in order to carry out precise and uniform
operations in safety.

caution
You should always have a spare radio-control battery, already charged, in order to
avoid unforeseen damage or flat accumulators causing machine down-time.

danger
It is strictly forbidden to tamper with any function of the push-button panel. The main
alarm warnings are audible and visual (light column on the crane body). Crane moni-
toring and signals of alarms and specific blocks are displayed on the screen, which
must be constantly consulted to check proper operation and to get information on the
possible cause of the crane stop.

I Green light indicating transmitter status


Lit it indicates that the radio-control transmitter is active.
L Emergency button
When pressed it blocks the crane’s hydraulic operations.
To reset the function you must turn it in the direction shown by the arrows above the
knob.
M Winch switch
Activation/deactivation of the winch device
With the winch device engaged the indicator (S) lights up.

Radio-control

 Switching on pushbutton panel

With the emergency button (L) depressed the pushbutton panel cannot be switched on.
- Enable the use of a crane through the button on the PROGRESS system panel.
- Enable the pushbutton panel by turning switch (P) to 1 and waiting for the panel to emit first a
continuous sound signal, then a short one, and the indicator light (I) to flash intermittently.
- After 3 seconds of flashing, press button (Q) for subsequent confirmation.
The flashing of indicator (I) becomes a fixed light.

Switching off pushbutton panel


- Disable the pushbutton panel by turning switch (P) to 0.
- Disable the use of a crane through the button on the PROGRESS system panel .
Pushbutton panel functions
The transmission distance of the pushbutton panel is 100 metres (without large obstacles in
between).
Radio disturbances may block the pushbutton panel with the consequent stopping of the crane. To
reset functioning, press button (Q) on the panel.
The irregular flashing of the green LED (I) on the receiver indicates that the signal is bad, this fault
is reported also on the display of the radio control.
In the case of disturbed frequency, to modify the transmission channel you must switch the pushbut-
ton panel off and switch it on again within 2 seconds.

caution
Carefully read chapter “2 - Safety regulations and warnings”, especially the parts deal-
ing with interference, electromagnetic waves and safety distances.

Rapid flashing of indicator (I) means that the transmitter is running out of power and that the
accumulator has 30 seconds of charge left. The rapid flashing is accompanied by a sound signal.
For battery replacement and recharge, see the radio-control manual.

Switching on push-button panel

With the emergency button (R) depressed the pushbutton panel cannot be switched on.
- Enable the use of a crane through the button on the PROGRESS system panel.
- Briefly depress key (S) to enable the push-button panel.
- The warning lights (I and O) turn on.
- Press key (S) again,
A sound signal will follow (see manual PROGRESS)

Pushbutton panel functions


The transmission distance of the pushbutton panel is 100 metres (without large obstacles in
between).
Radio disturbances may block the pushbutton panel with the consequent stopping of the crane. To
reset functioning, press key (S).

The irregular flashing of the LED (O) on the receiver indicates that the signal is bad, this fault is
reported also on the display of the radio control.

CAUTION
Carefully read chapter “2 - Safety regulations and warnings”, especially the parts
dealing with interference, electromagnetic waves and safety distances.

An audible signal and flashing warning light (I) warns that the battery is running low. In that case,
the duration will be very short.

Emergency station-crane with radio remote

The use of the control unit, with levers to be fitted to the hydraulic control bank, is
allowed only to qualified personnel who must act solely in an extreme emergency
situation. The station in fact may involve dangers (crushing, falling, impact etc.) and
pitfalls (reduced visibility, confined spaces etc.) which only a well-trained skilled opera-
tor understands.

The emergency controls must not have activating levers. One single lever is supplied which, in the
case of emergency, is installed in order to carry out one operation at a time.

The use of the control station is limited to emergency situations such as operations,
which allow you to position the load (if any) and to close the crane to be able to go to
an EFFER service center.

prohibition
It is forbidden to operate the crane by simultaneously using the controls of two differ-
ent stations. Unexpected movements could occur. Use of the control unit is allowed to
one operator only.

With the crane completely folded, topped up with fluid and on flat ground, the level must be between
the Minimum and Maximum marks.
In order to visualize oil temperature, fold the crane completely and wait for approx. one minute.
The PROGRESS device shows the oil temperature on the display and when temperature exceedes
80 degrees a warning tone is emitted. See PROGRESS Manual

The safety devices, the controls and the accessories described in this part represent a general list. The
instructions to be considered must be referred to the crane model and to the bought configuration.

HSS Device

The device increases the extension exit speed of the basic crane by reducing at the same time the
ability to push. In some versions the connection/disconnection is controlled by a switch located on the
push - button panel.

In some versions the H.S.S. device can not be disconnected. It can be recognised because on the
push - button panel switch is not present the label “H.S.S.” corresponding to the device function.

U H.S.S. Indicator light
When lit it indicates that the H.S.S. device is active.
When inserted, the device may be the cause of failure to achieve the maximum crane performances
in vertical shown on the load diagram.
In this case you can reach peak performance by switching off the device (H.S.S. OFF}

Notes On the Radio control are present both the switch and /or the starting up indicator
also in the crane versions where the H.S.S. device can not be disconnected; but
it is not present the appropriate identification sticker. In this case the starting up/
disconnection has not any effect.

“PROGRESS” Crane Control System


“Progress” safety system is an electronic system which controls all crane movements and allows
you to work safely; it has various functions including:
- Load limiting device (structure overload control )
- Stability control
- Control of the geometric configuration
- Secondary controls
Often these controls lead to decreases in operating speeds and downgrades of work performance.

Notes A detailed description of functioning can be found in the specific PROGRESS


manual.

Partial by-pass of the stability control device


(stabilizers control)

caution
The bypass button (1), on the PROGRESS device’s electric box, allows you to disable
the device in the event of an emergency. In emergency situations, the device no longer
controls stability and there is a danger of the crane overturning.

There is a coded seal label (2) on the bypass selector that allows EFFER to determine
whether the device has been tampered with.

Note: This device turns off only the by-pass anti-tilting device (stabilizers are consedired
extended to 100% and 3 feet off the ground); all other functions of the PROGRESS
system do not change (see PROGRESS MANUAL) .

To activate the bypass function:

- remove the protective label (2) and the


safety cap (3). V
To activate the bypass function:

- Select the CRANE function by turning the
selector (V) to CRANE and pressing and
holding the bypass button (1) at the same
time.
It is now possible to take the necessary
measures to exit emergency mode.

To be able to move the outriggers in case an


electrical fault occurs, it is necessary to carry
out the following manoeuvres:
Procedure 1:
Operate the PROGRESS panel buttons,
following the procedure described in the
PROGRESS Manual.
Procedure 2: (alternative)

Dismantle the carter of the outriggers control


valves group placed at the side of the
casing.

The knurled spool present on the valves 1

to the outrigger or foot jack which has to be

reduces/accelerates speeds depending on
the geometric configurations and the value
of the applied load.

Emergency buttons

When emergency situations arise caused by the process (functioning, use or maintenance anomalies
etc...) or by elements external to operational running, you must intervene promptly with the emergency
device to cut out the machine cycle.
Each control station has a device with which the operator can stop the crane functioning in cases of
immediate danger.
Press the red mushroom button (A) to trigger the stop device. To return the crane to operating status
you must reset:

- normal working conditions;


- normal safety conditions;
- the functionality of the device by turning the
button in the direction indicated by the arrows
above it;
- press the “reset” key (B) while it is 00762157

Use the device only in emergencies. Pressing the device while carrying out fast
manoeuvres could cause dangerous oscillation of the load.

Check efficiency of the device before each use of the crane:


- start up the power circuit;
- press the button;
- select a crane operation (except those related to stabilisation).
The device is efficient if the control does not generate any movement.

Notes Verification must be carried out on all the crane’s devices.

Should the device get irreparably damaged, making it impossible to retract the crane into transport
configuration, contact the nearest EFFER Service Centre both for information regarding any repair
of the device and for information on the retraction manoeuvres. In fact in special circumstances it may
be necessary to exclude its functioning in order to complete the retraction manoeuvres in transport
configuration (see specific PROGRESSmanual).

Holding valves
On all the arm operating jacks there are hydro-piloted holding valves that carry out the following
safety functions:
- stopping movement in the case of accidental breakage of the specific flexible tube;
- no handling with the truck engine switched off;
- stopping movement in the case of sudden loss of motive power and consequent lack of supply to
the hydraulic system;
- avoiding vacuum phenomena due to the effects of self-movement caused by the load itself.

Quick couplings
Hydraulic accessory equipment requires that the crane distributor be equipped with several sup-
plementary elements and the relevant tubing that can be connected by means of hydraulic quick
couplings. In this case you must act as follows:

Multiconnection quick couplings (MULTIFASTER)

MULTIFASTER quick couplings allow connecting several hydraulic lines; connection and locking of
the system is is achieved thanks to a lever linked to a cam.
The quick coupling is equipped with an automatic safety system with a red button to with a big size
red button to avoid accidental disconnections.

Coupling connection and disconnection must be carried out with the pump disengaged,
in order to prevent seal or inner part breaks, thus causing loss of oil and malfunction-
ing.

- disconnect the pump (power take-off)


- discharge the pressure in the tubing to be
connected by moving the corresponding

Heat exchanger

This device has the function of cooling the hydraulic fluid in the event of overheating.

The exchanger is activated automatically when
a predetermined temperature is reached
The ventilation capacity varies depending on
the temperature of the oil to cool.

Operation

The device permits swivelling the stabiliser


jacks downwards, for the working position, and
upwards for the transport positions.

Fly-jib

This accessory, applicable after the last hydraulic extension of the basic crane, permits reaching
greater operating distances. Consisting of an arm that can be angled and of hydraulic extensions it is
locked to the crane by means of stem (A) and fixed with fixing pins. As any other item of equipment,
its application presupposes preparation of the crane and the hydraulic and electrical hook-ups (see
“Hydraulic quick couplings” and “Electrical connectors” in this chapter).
Fitting out the crane with this accessory requires in any case knowledge of the general safety
regulations given in chapter “2 - Safety regulations and warnings”.

Handling
Choice of lifting means is the responsibility of
the operator and depends on jib weight. It is
equipped with pedestals so it can rest on the
ground without being damaged.
The support pedestals, when removable, must
be dismantled once the jib is installed. With the
crane folded they could cause an exceeding of
the overall dimensions limit.
Cables, chains or straps of maximum capacity
and suitable length (not supplied by EFFER) are
used for handling.
Sling the jib in such a way that the junction of the 00762179
cables, chains or straps, with the jib horizontal,
is in the vertical passing through the centre of
gravity.
The lengths must be safely blocked without
damaging the jib, for example in the pins fixed
to the stem and at the hook attachment.

Assembly
- Lay the jib on the ground at a suitable distance from the crane axis and approach the stem with
the last extension so they are on the same level;
- Close the jib using the jib control lever.
- Disengage the hydraulic pump.
- Insert the quick-release coupling marked with one red clip. (see “Hydraulic Quick Cou-
plings”)
- Connect the electrical connectors (see “Electrical connectors”)
- Using the jib movement control lever, open/close the jib.
- Insert the other quick-release couplings.
- Engage the hydraulic pump.
- Move the stem to orient it in such a way that it approaches the axis of the crane tubing;
- Move/adjust the crane tubing to line up the extension and stem fixing holes;
- Insert the pins (or pin) and lock them in the correct hole;
Check that the pins and hook are the ones supplied (see chap. “3 - Description and technical
features”).
- dismantle the jib support pedestal (when forecasted).

If the jib support pedestal is not dismounted, the overall dimensions forecast for the
transport exceed.

Pin fastening of basic crane and jib is made


easier by the stop located on the basic crane
estensions, and by the plate located on the jib
frame. Especially:
- insert and fit the pin 1 using the stop as refer-
ence to make assembly easier; 1
- move the jib up to center the holes and fit the 2
pin 2.

To lift heavy loads below the horizontal line it


may be necessary to lock JIB extensions by
a special pin.
See load diagram and technical data for
correct pin size. (See chap. “3 - Description

Do not leave the load hanging below the
horizontal line for a long time. Remain in this
configuration (with pinned extensions) as
long as strictly necessary.

CAUTION
Extracting the jib extensions when they are locked by a pin, leads to structural damage
of the pin and tubular frames.

Dismantling

- Fit the jib support (if the jib is removable).


- Rest the jib on flat and solid ground.
- Take the securing pins out and then release the jib by retracting the extensions of the base
crane.
- Using the jib lever, open/close it to position the shank parallel with the jib.
- Disengage the hydraulic pump
- Using the jib lever, open/close it.
- Disconnect the quick-release couplings, remembering to protect them with the plastic caps
supplied.

Working conditions

CAUTION
Fly-jib operation depends on the safety devices installed on the crane. Before using
fly-jib, check which safety devices are installed and operate with care.

Driving on the road


The manual extensions can be transported by
inserting them into the last extension of the basic
crane or of the jib, one inside the other and fixed
with the pin supplied. The number of extensions
and the possibility of transporting them in this
configuration depend on the maximum overall
dimensions permitted by the regulations in force
and on the number of hydraulic extensions the
crane has.

Handling/lifting

Choice of the means of lifting to adopt is the operator’s responsibility and depends
on the weight of the extension.

The extension’s centre of gravity is roughly halfway along its length.

or slings of maximum capacity and suitable length are used in such a way that their link, with the
extension in a horizontal position, is on the vertical passing through the centre of gravity.

Assembly/dismantling
To carry out the operations in a safe way you must choose the most suitable lifting means in relation
to weight.
Assembly of the extension is carried out as follows:
- slightly incline the tube in which the extension is to be inserted;
- insert it into the tube until the fixing holes match up;
- fix it to the tube by inserting the pin supplied in the matching holes, locking it with the split-pins.
Repeat the same operations to fit an extension inside another.

Assembly may also be carried out to insert all


the extensions into the last extension, one inside
the other, matching all the holes and fixing them
with a single pin locked with split-pins (transport
configuration).
In this case, to set them functioning, you must
remove the fixing pin, slip them out to the
mechanical limit stop (A) and insert the fixing
pins supplied.

Proceed in the same way for the other extensions.

If all the extensions are retracted in the extension one inside the other:
- remove the single fixing pin;
- slip out the last extension to the mechanical limit stop.
For the remaining extensions proceed in the same way, paying great ATTENTION TO POS-
SIBLE SUDDEN MOVEMENTS OF EXTENSIONS that are not locked.

Various applications
Application of any accessory whatsoever must be approved and carried out by Effer authorised
workshops.

An unsuitable or incorrectly mounted accessory could seriously damage the crane
and jeopardise safety.

Hydraulic and electro-hydraulic accessories


Accessories of this type must be correctly connected to the relevant hydraulic and electric controls
(where applicable).
These accessories are divided into three main categories:
A accessories for which no type of functional, performance or speed declassing is necessary. These
accessories do not create stresses greater than standard functioning with hook. Generally, these
are accessories that do not release the load abruptly without putting it down in advance, they do
not create irregular structural stresses upward and twists sideways.
This category includes (e.g.): rotors, motorised hooks, tongs for packages, hydraulic swing
bars.

B Accessories that require an operation downgrading in performance and speed. In general these
are accessories that release the load abruptly without putting it down, which create stresses
upward and stresses of fatigue (e.g. buckets, demolition shears, demolition hammers) and also
create irregular structural stresses sideways (e.g., drills, winches ).

Notes With PROGRESS device, if provided, you can enable optional functions that can
control the accessories in this category safely. To do this you must carry out a
specific procedure described in detail in the “PROGRESS Instruction Manual”
(e.g. insert special caps at the ends of electrical cables, insert a PIN code with
the distributor levers).

With the exception of cases explicitly permitted by Effer, it is forbidden to apply this
category of accessory if, on the same crane, a personnel lifting accessory is envisaged
(category C accessories).

Various accessories

C personnel lifting accessories. Application of these accessories requires specific authorisation from
Effer and specific optional safety devices (see PROGRESS Manual). The installation of these
accessories must be certified by specific authorised bodies of the sector. This practice is obliga-
tory in certain countries. In any case, you must respect the laws and regulations in force.

Notes Application of these accessories may require the preparation of an emergency


hydraulic power circuit (e.g. hand pump). On this subject it is pointed out that
circuit hook-up must be carried out in accordance with instructions available from
authorised workshops. Furthermore, a hand pump displacement, which repre-
sents the compromise between movements obtainable and activating efforts,
ranger from 25 to 35 c.c. For emergency situations an electro-pump, or better, a
motor pump are recommended.

Instructions for use of Bucket accessory


(Type B chap. 07-23)

The application of the bucket on the crane is possible only if it is provided for the specific model
(see Chap.”” 3 - Description and technical features “) and only if the following instructions are
observed:
1) The type of bucket should be for loading and unloading aggregates, excluding toothed excavating
buckets and polyp-grabs for scrap, log grabs etc. which require a particularly fast use and/or causing

stresses for which the crane has not been


designed (e.g. pushes downwards, sudden
releases of the load, excessive speeds of
rotation, lateral and torsional torques in
booms and hook connection).
2) To avoid damaging stresses of the crane
upwards, the load picked up by the bucket
must not be released abruptly but gradually
(e.g. at least 3 sec. for 100% load). To avoid
damaging lateral and torsional stresses of
booms and hook connection, the speed of
rotation of the bucket (rotor) should not be
excessive (e.g. up to 4 sec/rev).
3) The connection between the crane and
bucket must be suitable for its use and of a
swivel type (to allow the bucket to swing in any
direction). We recommend fitting the bucket to
the crane using a properly designed connecting
bracket so as not to damage the crane hook
connection lugs.

4 )   To fill up the

5) Swinging maneuvers should be carried out with


start/stop progressive movements.

6) It is strictly forbidden to install the bucket on


cranes equipped with operator baskets.

7) Even for an occasional use of the bucket, the rou-


tine and extraordinary maintenance provided for
the crane, should be more frequent: from 30% to
50% depending on the use of the accessory.

8)  It is necessary to downgrade the performance of the standard crane with hook by lowering the
electro-hydraulic system settings (case 1) or, alternatively, fit a bucket having a certain performance
(case 2).
Case 1: If you fit a bucket whose full load weight, including rotor, if provided, exceeds 70% of the
load which can be lifted at the maximum outreach, it is necessary to downgrade the electro-hydraulic
system as follows:
1.1 - Downgrading for EC cranes with the electronic limiting device. The downgrading value
is preset, depending on the crane model (may vary from 12% to 30%) - For operation see DMU/
PROGRESS manual.
Note 1: bucket downgrading is independent so it does not penalize hook performance.
Note 2: please note that in the proximity of the maximum load values, the electronic device slows
down work speeds.
1.2 - Downgrading for EC cranes with the hydraulic or electro-hydraulic limiting device (carried
out by installer)
Control bank general pressure and load limiting device operation pressure values should be reduced
by 12% to 30% depending on the crane model. For more information please contact EFFER.
Note: In order to have the hook maximum capacity, it is required to fit the appropriate pressure
diverters to the hydraulic system.
1.3 Downgrading for non-EC cranes
The pressure general value has to be reduced by 12% to 30% depending on the crane model. Contact
EFFER technical service.
Note: In order to have the hook maximum capacity, it is required to fit the appropriate pressure
diverters to the hydraulic system.
Case 2: If you fit a bucket whose full load weight, including rotor, if provided, does not exceed 70%
of the load which can be lifted at the maximum outreach (as specified in the crane load diagram) it
is not necessary to downgrade the electro-hydraulic settings from the crane system.

Lifting and slinging accessories

All accessories must be inspected before use, and checked in accordance with the manufacturer’s
requirements, by recording operations in special forms (see chapter Records and coupons”).
Verifications and maintenance operations are described in chap. “8 - User instructions”.
The accessories must be:
- suitable for the type of sling
- identified by maximum capacity
- periodical check, by recording the operation;
- visually checked before use
- used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Slings or ropes made up of synthetic fibre, must be replaced in accordance with their manufacturer’s
requirements.

Chains
Metal cables are replaced by chains when the former are too rigid or when high temperatures are
involved.
Wear is caused mainly by friction on fairly hard surfaces. The sling consists of a bell and one or more
lengths of chain (see figure). Various components are linked with mechanical coupling joints. For
correct assembly, cut the chain to the desired lengths in such a way that each length of chain has
an odd number of links, so that both hook and bell lie in the same vertical plane. Never use chains
linked together with bolts.

Metal cables (slings)


The metal cables consist of numerous fairly thin wires, spiral
wound to form the so-named strands which are then wound
around a core that is generally textile and sometimes metal.
When the rope is bent around a pin with a diameter two to four
times the diameter of the rope, it is used to lift material with

Synthetic fibre ropes


The slings must consist of ropes and straps of the
same capacity.
Fibre ropes are used when loads:
- are delicate
- have damageable surfaces
They are especially recommended when the

- are small size or not very stable;


- are long (e.g. piping).

The ropes get damaged when:


- they are in contact with corners or sharp
points;
- they are knotted to reduce their length;
- they are subjected to torsion;
