La grande emigrazione italiana verso gli Stati Uniti d’America, è compresa in

un lasso di tempo, che va dal 1880 al 1915. La motivazione che spinse

milioni di italiani, perlopiù meridionali ad emigrare fu l’estrema povertà in cui
era piombato il meridione dopo l’unità d’Italia. Gli Stati Uniti aprirono le porte
nel pieno dell'avvio del loro sviluppo capitalistico; le navi portavano merci in
Europa e ritornavano cariche di emigranti. I costi delle navi per
l'America erano inferiori a quelli dei treni per il Nord Europa, per
questo milioni di persone scelsero di attraversare l'Oceano.

il divieto di fabbricazione, vendita, importazione e trasporto di alcool. Ma
questo fece fiorire un grande mercato illegale. Nacquero dei locali detti
speakeasy, bar segreti con musica dal vivo e spettacoli. Uno di questi era il
BATHTUB GIN che si trova ancora a  Chelsea ed è nascosto all'interno di un
caffè, lo Stone Street Company. Se chiedete ai camerieri dove si trova il bar
segreto e vi condurranno verso un ingresso nascosto dietro un muro
tappezzato da carta da parati. Gli interni risalgono agli anni '20 del secolo
scorso, quando questo locale serviva cocktail a base di Gin. Ancora oggi lo
scenario è lo stesso, potrete bere ottime bevande a base di gin. In questo
locale che ha al centro della sala una vasca da bagno di rame, un paio di
giorni a settimana si tengono spettacoli burlesque.

di liberazione delle donne negli Stati Uniti. Divenne, in seguito, slogan di una
delle più innovative campagne marketing: convincere le donne a fumare in
pubblico significava espandere il mercato delle sigarette anche ad esse.

di commedia chiamata slapstick che ha le sue radici nella Commedia
dell'arte italiana, che implicava un grande uso del corpo e della gestualità da
parte dell'attore. Il termine deriva da un oggetto usato nei teatri dell'epoca,
il battacio, composto da due assi di legno, che, quando sbattuto, produceva
un rumore molto forte con poca forza e dava quindi la possibilità agli attori di
colpirsi ripetutamente senza farsi male. Si tratta di una delle prime rudimentali
forme di effetto speciale. I più famosi interpreti di questo genere furono
Stanlio e Ollio, in Inglese Laurel & Hardy.

rischio di rapina in casa che è sei volte più alto di New York, quello di essere
derubato, una volta e mezzo, e quello di subire una violenza sessuale, tre
volte in più. Ciò non toglie che sia comunque possibile anche a New York
fare incontri che si sarebbero evitati molto volentieri.
