HAPPY
NEW YEAR! b
New Year’s Eve is probably the oldest
celebration in the world – it started in
Babylonia 4,000 years ago, and most
places celebrate 31st December.
New Year is a time for making resolutions but it is
also about parties, fun and fi reworks! There is also
special food – in the USA people eat black-eyed peas,
and in Europe they make cakes and sweets. In English-
speaking countries people wear paper hats, join hands
and sing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ at midnight. Scotland is c
famous for its Hogmanay (New Year) celebrations which
last four or five days and have traditional Scottish music!
Countries around the world have fireworks and
street parties at New Year. The first inhabited place to
experience New Year is Kiritimati (Christmas Island) in
the Pacific Ocean. After that, Auckland, New Zealand is
the first large city to celebrate and Alaska is one of the
last places. It is summer in Australasia, on the other side
of the world it is winter, but people still gather outside to
celebrate!
2009 was a special New Year because it was the d
end of the first decade of the 21st century. In New York,
hundreds of thousands of people watched a giant crystal
ball come down into Times Square. Millions of pieces
of confetti floated down with 10,000 handwritten New
Year wishes. In Sydney, 1.5 million people watched
fireworks over the Opera House, and in Rio de Janeiro
about 2 million people gathered on Copacabana beach.
In London, 200,000 people listened to Big Ben and
watched fireworks over the river Thames. In Tokyo,
temple bells rang out at midnight and illuminated
balloons floated in the sky. e
The New Year is a new beginning and an opportunity
to start again, so on 31st December remember to make
your New Year’s resolutions!

Yes, it will. 5 Life be easy for most people.
No, it won’t.
3b Work with a partner. Which predictions do you agree/disagree with?
Comments
a Hi, Josh! I think life will be great. People will live in ‘smart’
houses. A central computer will control everything! It will open
and close doors. And a ‘smart’ mirror in the bathroom (that’s
right, it’s a mirror with a computer!) will check your health.
And guess what? Robots will cook and do the housework. Maya
b In 100 years, people won’t use cars with petrol. They will drive
electric cars on underground roads. And there will be electric
buses with computers for drivers! The best thing? People will be
able to travel in time. Now that will be exciting! Rosie
c Hi, Josh. Life will be better in 2100 – in space! People will live on the
Moon and on Mars in special cities. They will grow food and send
it to Earth in huge spacecraft. Space stations will orbit Earth and
control the climate. There will also be holidays in space! How cool
is that? Brandon
d Will life be different in 100 years? Yes, it will. Will life be better?
No, it won’t! Climate change will cause floods and droughts. Rich
people will live for a long time, maybe 200 years! But life won’t be
easy for most people. They won’t have any food or water. Faith
e Well, Josh, the good news is... there won’t be any schools!
Students will have lessons at home on their computers. They’ll
be in contact with other students all over the world in a ‘virtual’
classroom. The bad news is... teachers will give us homework in the
future, too! Elliot

Reading
1 Warm up Look at the photos. Do you like robots? Do you know any robots in
films or books?
Karel Capek, a Czech writer, used the word ‘robot’ for the first
time in 1921. It comes from the Czech word ‘robota’. In his play
R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots), a factory makes robots.
Unfortunately, the robots kill all the humans and control the
world! It’s a scary story.
Today, we find robots in lots of different places from factories
to hospitals. In car factories, robots do boring, dangerous or
difficult jobs such as cutting metal or painting the body of the
car. Some robots guard museums at night. Others vacuum the
floors in offices and homes!
These robots don’t look like people, but they are similar to us.
In the human body, the brain sends messages to different parts
of it and controls its movements. In robot technology, a main
computer controls the movements of the robot in the same way.
Robots are very useful for exploring space. The Russians put
robots on the Moon in the 1970s, and Americans landed two
robots on Mars in 2004. But why do we send robots into space?
Well, robots can go to places that are dangerous for humans.
They don’t need oxygen or food and drink, and they can survive
extreme temperatures. In space this is important. Temperatures
can go from 120°C in the sun to -100°C in the dark!
These days, the most advanced robots can hear, see and make
decisions. They have AI or ‘artificial intelligence’. In the future,
we will use robots in many different ways. Doctors will use very
small robots called nanorobots, to treat illnesses. They are so
small that you can’t see them!
