The Prato Urban Jungle project of the Municipality of Prato has the objective to renew
most critical neighbourhoods of the city of Prato from a social, productive and
environmental point of view, in a sustainable and inclusive way by developing areas
with a high density of green - the so-called urban jungles - which will be grafted onto
the urban landscape by multiplying the natural ability of plants to break down
pollutants and return the land to the use of people, transforming the marginal areas
into real points of green well-being within the city. The urban jungles are co-designed
with the help of citizens, through shared urban planning facilitated by the use of digital
platforms, which encourage the community management, increasing inclusion and
promoting widespread sustainable development of the urban environment.

Prato Urban Jungle aims to promote creative and visionary urban design to re-
naturalize the neighbourhoods of Prato in a sustainable and socially inclusive way. To
this end, urban jungles developed in four specific areas of the city as an innovative
solution to address the problems of sustainable land use within the city. The "urban
jungles" are areas with a high density of green, immersed in the urban structure, which
multiply the natural ability of plants to reduce pollutants, restoring at the same time
the unused soil and space for the use of the community, transforming marginal and
decaying areas into active green hubs.
The 4 pilot projects will adopt a community-driven approach to design, develop and
maintain urban jungles, through the creation of Green Hubs or communities of
stakeholders, citizens, businesses, civil society organizations, etc. that will mobilize
urban creativity to develop and replicate urban jungles.
Environmental monitoring
The activities related to environmental monitoring of Prato Urban Jungle, developed by
the IBE CNR, are focused on the development of tools and technologies to measure and
model NBS interventions.
Through the installation of a series of control units (AIRQino), developed by CNR
researchers, the state of the environment and air quality will be monitored before,
during, and after reforestation interventions, with an ex-ante and ex-post approach
able to quantify the benefits of the interventions. The AIRQino will provide open data
and constitute a low-cost observational network model, which can also be replicated in
other areas and contexts and can also be managed by the citizens themselves or by
other associations in the area.
Environmental awareness
In addition to resources, what nature can offer us is also a teaching on what a model of
society can be set up from a perspective of collectivity and sharing of strengths and
skills. Nature pursues evolution towards its goal of self-preservation, mankind can only
draw lessons from it.
Legambiente implements a series of activities aimed at contributing and feeding
environmental awareness:
● "Small" tools (Toolkit for citizens and schools) to understand the relationship
between city and nature, with a particular focus on the importance of the plant
kingdom;
● a course for citizen gardeners, which will be repeated in two editions;
● environmental education in some schools;
● meetings for citizens, with speakers chosen to collect more voices and more
topics on the green in urban areas.
