Lazio Region
An international project for the promotion of natural stones
hanks to Latium Natural Stones, the first promotional project of the stony sector, the Lazio Region exports the Made in Italy in its symbols of good taste, beauty, production and entrepreneurial capacity. The initiative, realized by the Lazio Region and Sviluppo Lazio, aims at enhancing the excellence of stones such as basalt, peperino, tuff, travertine, perlato coreno, valuable productions of the province of Viterbo, Tivoli and Guidonia area and the basin of Perlato Coreno in the Ausoni Mountains, in Ciociaria. These materials are admired by architects and professionals, showed off in the most beautiful places all over the world. Between 2006 and 2007, Lazio Region organized the incoming of two foreign delegations of architects and entrepreneurs who visited some of the main extractive basins of Lazio, in order to make them know the natural stones and the ornamental marbles produced in our territory. Moreover Lazio Region participated in AIA 2006 - Los Angeles and AIA 2007 - San Antonio, the biggest North American fair of design and architecture. From this point of view, the series of meetings linked to the stones of Lazio aim at fostering the development of the extractive sector of our region and to strengthen its presence in the international markets. The Lazio region is the first producer of ornamental stones, with 119 quarries and a production of 2,7 millions of tons. In the regional territory there is even the production of building materials (239 quarries), with 30,8 millions of tons produced and industrial materials (18 quarries), with 795.000 tons produced. From the employment point of view, the stony sector employs more than 2.000 people, for an induced activity of 10.000 unities, constituting one of the top sector of the production of the Lazio region. Whats more, its collocation within the system of Industrial Clusters, particularly the marble cluster and the stony cluster of Ausoni Mountains and Rome-Tiburtina, gives to the activity a structured dimension, able to increase the value of several productions of the territory. Thats why the Lazio Region, conscious of the importance of the sector and its developing potentialities, has been exploiting all the synergies to support its development. Actually the project Latium Natural Stones started with the USA, means to go on, and to enrich of new experiences abroad, within the international process of the production excellences of our territory.

Regione Lazio

Of all elements of nature, stone is the one which most visibly embodies the physical aspects of Latium. Its turbulent geological past is present in the volcanic outcroppings spread out over the region: tuff, peperino tuff, and basalt constitute the primary soil in many areas, surfacing boldly and creating a landscape bearing unmistakable morphology and colors, ranging from yellow to gray and black. Travertine, quarried extensively around Rome, was used to create the many monuments of the ancient as well as of the modern city. Perlato Coreno, from the Ausonian hills around Cassino, characterizes with its hues of light gray the landscape of the southern boundaries of Latium. These stones were skillfully blended together, or in conjunction with brickwork, to create the astonishing variety of architectures illustrated here. The transition from natural stone to the artificiality of the buildings nevertheless preserved a link with the very roots of the land, creating a stratification of layers and meanings, a rich intertwining of images, the very core of Latiums architectural identity. Not unlike its historical stratification, this interminglement greatly increases the density of the human presence on the territory. Today, the stones from this region represent far more than a mere building material: they embody a wealth of craftsmanship, traditional building practices, and profound cultural values. Their use thus establishes a continuity with the great building art of all ages, and with the natural character - the spirit of the place.

Travertine Travertino
o stone can like travertine be considered to be the one color of Rome. Its slight yellowish hue imbues the citys atmosphere with a warm radiance, echoed by the red, yellow and ocher plaster facades. Lapis tiburtinum - stone of Tivoli - was widely excavated in Roman times, and contributed to the shaping of numberless monuments and buildings. The layers visible in the slabs of this stone enrich its texture with a slight organic appearance, as if travertine were in truth a living material: and this character indeed survives in Romes buildings. Many areas of Latium have their own hue of travertine, which ranges from brown to a pale yellowish white. It is one of the stones of the moderns, since it was extensively adopted for the construction of Italys image after the countrys Unity at the end of the 19th Century. Its austere character made it the perfect choice for functional structures train stations, postal offices, and public buildings in general were built with this extraordinary marble. Travertine is a very flexible stone, which finds large number of uses in the building industry. As can be deduced from the technical data, travertine is a very compact stone, highly resistant to compression and flexure: this has made its fortune in the building industry. Travertine can be finished in many different ways, in large slabs or small listels, thus providing a great variety of cladding solutions.

Travertine can be used in outdoor solutions, such as Gianni Ascarellis refurbishment of Piazza Dante, a square in Romes 19 th Century area. The stone has been skillfully used in conjunction with brickwork, thus creating the chromatic contrast characterizing the design. The stone has been modeled to recall classical ornamentation, but also in large rough slabs, which are set into the ground, thus being partially covered by grass. This produces an aura of romantic antiquity, responding to the historicizing character of the square and the neighboring buildings.

One of the most famous buildings clad in travertine is Romes Piazza Bologna post office, built by Mario Ridolfi in 1932. The architect adopted a nocciola hazelnut colored travertine, which was cut in listels, each with an exact curvature in order to create the continuous faade of the building. The joints are deep, thus creating the dynamic effect of chiaroscuro under sunlight.

For the Getty Center in Santa Monica, Richard Meier used a vast amount - 16,000 tons! - of classico travertine coming from the quarries at Bagni di Tivoli. The monumental character of the architectural complex is emphasized by the stones solemn and austere appearance. In a building recently completed in Rome, the Ara Pacis Museum, Meier again adopted Tivoli travertine. In both cases, the architect skillfully places skylighting at the edges of these rustic travertine walls, in order to underscore the beautiful modeling of the rough stone.

eperino - lapis albanus - is a volcanic ash originated from the ancient Cimino volcano by Viterbo and from the volcanic system south of Rome. Its gray, rough appearance and durability brought about its fortune in the construction of many utilitarian structures in ancient times. Its fire-resistant qualities were fundamental in a city which, like Rome, witnessed fire on a daily basis. But it was also used for fountains, thus creating a perfect link between opposed elements. In the province of Viterbo, peperino tuff is probably the most wide-spread building material, with the village of Vitorchiano being entirely built of this stone. Peperino was extensively used in Roman times to build utilitarian structures such as bridges and aqueducts, but also found application in more aulic buildings, such as the temple of Fortunus at the foot of the Capitol Hill. In recent times, peperino has often been used to clad the ground floors of buildings, in order to protect them from weathering, and provide them with a sturdy and safe appearance. The surface of the stone, which is covered by many small black spots resembling pepper corns (hence the name peperino) displays an animated, almost organic nature.

Given its peculiar resistance to abrasion and weathering, peperino is particularly indicated for the paving of squares and streets. In Romes historic center a large part of new pavings has been realized with this stone, such as in the renewed Piazza San Cosimato in Trastevere. In their design the architects Lorenzo Pignatti Morano and Federica Ottone have used peperino for the paving and to create seating and other elements of urban furnishing.

Tuff Tufo
uff represents the primeval stone of the Roman landscape: the narrow gorges and ravines from which the Etruscans dug out their necropolises stretch out among mounds of yellow tuff, and the tombs themselves are constructed using the same stone. Throughout Latium, tuff seems to emerge naturally from the ground, even when it is used to form cyclopean walls, such as those built by King Servius Tullius, a remnant of which is dwarfed by Romes central train station. Architecture thus melts with the earthlike forms of tuff, creating a podium which in truth resembles a softer earthwork. In modern architecture, the use tuff has often represented an appraisal of ancient building practices, sought in order to establish a link to traditional crafts and a specifically regional identity of Central Italian architecture. Authors such as Mario Ridolfi and Paolo Portoghesi have extensively and skillfully used this rough, nearly savage stone, creating a modern vocabulary for an archaic building material, as in Portoghesis 1961 Casa Baldi in Labaro, near Rome. From the data it is possible to understand the high porosity and fragility of tuff. It is highly resistant to weathering, since it seems to adapt to external conditions, becoming more and more resistant over time.

Tuff has a great building tradition in Rome, and was extensively used at the beginning of the 20th Century to signify strength and monumental weight. Two Roman buildings of the period, Cesare Valles Registrar building and Marcello Piacentinis Casa dei Mutilati show different uses of this very peculiar, almost organic stone, which can be used for cladding in blocks of various sizes, or as load-bearing construction for small structures.
Registrar building, Rome

Among the most innovative buildings extensively using tuff is the 1962 church of San Gregorio VII in Rome. The architects, Paniconi and Pediconi, devised a sophisticated structural frame, articulated by reinforced concrete pilasters. The opaque wall between these is then realized with the so called Roman masonry, alternating tuff and brickwork. Although the masonry is to some extents simplified, it allows a number of different solutions with exceptional figurative strength.

Tuff finds excellent applications in outdoor design. A recently completed square in Settecamini, an eastern suburb of Rome, by architects Luigi Franciosini and Giovanna White, widely adopts tuff for the flooring, designing elegant and dynamic solutions. One of the recurring characters is naturally the combination of several different types of stone and brick: this is a trait which has belonged to traditional architecture from earliest times, originally with technical reasons, today as a figurative solution.
Settecamini

Basalt Basalto
Lion fountain, Campidoglio, Rome
asalt springs from the core of the Earth and hardens into a black, hard stone. Its resistance to weathering favored its use for paving, and it was thus extensively adopted for Romes tremendous road network. From the 19 th Century it was used in small cubes - sanpietrini - to pave the squares and streets of Italys new Capital city: its influence on Romes modern image is therefore of greatest impact. Basalt, as the ancient masons already knew, can be cut to a razor-sharp exactitude, and withstand the test of time without losing its crystalline perfection. Still today it is used to create dark, velvet-like surfaces, smooth to the touch like with few other stones. The data shows us a very compact stone, extremely hard and resistant to abrasion: for this reason it was used to create the roads of the Roman network (basolato), and still today, to pave streets with small blocks known as sanpietrini.

A recent use of basalt cladding in Rome is the base of the ES Hotel, right on the side of Termini train station. The large pyramidal structure is entirely clad with thin basalt slabs, creating a dark mass which helps the light-colored volume of the hotel to leap out. Given its hardness, basalt is especially suited for situations such as this, where a particularly resistant material is needed.
Basalt from Latium is currently being used for the completion of Antoni Gauds Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona. Through the use of a complex system of saws, the stone slabs become the organically shaped capitals of the piers.

An extraordinary use of basalt has been made in the recent remodelling of Palazzo Massimo alle Terme in Rome, one of the seats of the Roman National Museum. The 19 th Century building now hosts a vast archaeological collection. The new flooring is made of large basalt slabs, interrupted by thin travertine listels. The black-and-white effect of this pavement is of great impact, and it creates the ideal environment for the sculptures exhibited. Basalt is also used to create bases for the statues, turning them into near-abstract monolithic objects.

erlato Coreno is a marble from Southern Latium, found in the Ausonian mountains around Frosinone. Used in ancient times in many towns of the region, such as Minturnus, this marble was also adopted for the paving of roads vast stretches of the Appian road are clad with this stone. Throughout the middle ages the stone of Coreno continued to be used - most notably in the monastery of Cassino, one of Italys greatest centers of culture. Its light gray to white surface is characterized by an extensive presence of algae and shells, some of which form lucent spheres - thus the name perlato: the pearl-stone. But Perlato Coreno exists in many varieties, retelling in its different compositions a complex geological history. Test data shows a very compact and closed-structure stone, which can be extremely well polished in interior spaces. Outdoor applications are manifold, and Perlato Coreno is very suitable for object production. In the region surrounding Coreno Ausonio, the center of quarrying for the marble, many architectures are almost integrally built out of this stone: the most celebrated example is the Roman theater at Minturno, which is completely realized out of this white stone. Even the ancient Appia road, in that area, is partially realized with Perlato Coreno. The stone is suitable for applications in interior spaces or in exterior claddings.
