Testimonianze storiche e
l'istituzione comunale fosse sviluppata
e dotata di
autonomia giudiziaria.
descritti nelle prossime pagine.

SUVERETO:
parte importante allinterno dellamministrazione comunale.
realt territoriali.
About the municipality of Suvereto one
can know the exact day of foundation:
October 14th, 1201.
On this date, Ildebrandino VIII granted a
franchise, the Charta Libertatis, which
regulated relations between the lord, his
vassals and free members of the
community. With this card, the man
parted his powers with the rural
municipality and granted to inhabitants
of
Suvereto to freely dispose of their homes.
This grant allowed the economic growth
of the lower levels of the population,
allowing the creation of a new elite that,
with time, held an important part inside
the Common. Moreover, Suvereto could
protect the territory from the will for an
extension of other territories.

Town Hall: This is one of the most important examples of medieval civil architecture
in the Maremma. Construction of the building began in the thirteenth century, after
the granting of the "Charta Libertatis" (1201) to Suvereto by the feudal lord
Ildebrandino VIII Aldobrandeschi, Count Palatine, to house the magistrates of the
town rising. The structure of the building conforms to the requirements of a new
government for the community, which imposed many duties and responsibilities to
the rulers of the people, including that of adjudicating disputes among community
members. The Town Hall is topped by an ancient tower, clock today, a bell that
called the Assembly of Elders, and was one of the loojout points of the small
town. The entrance consists of a short, steep stairway under an open loggia
supported on columns: the loggia of the judges, where they used to issue and
publish judgments and decisions.

dell'imperatore.
Church and cloister of San Francesco: On
the heights of one of the two hills on
which lies the castle of Suvereto, lies the
remains of the convent of San Francesco,
with an adjacent convent church. The
convent was founded in 1286 on land
donated by the Aldobrandeschi counts of
Santa Fiora, former feudal lords of
Suvereto and was consecrated by Fra
Bartolomeo Bishop of Grosseto, as
reported by the chronicler Rodolgo order.
The cloister appears today in all its
integrity. A square plan with five arches
on each side of the pillars. At the center
of the cloister the tank was positioned,
now lost, which gives its name to the
square.
