dispositivo.
Non procedere all’installazione di Softbrake se:
‐ il dispositivo è visibilmente danneggiato;
‐ uno o più componenti sono mancanti;

rente assorbita <= 3A.
Morsetto J4.

superiore a 3 A.
In apertura:
la fase di apertura del freno;
b) tensione finale di valore fisso e pari a 205 c.c.;
In chiusura:

4. Note importanti
sempre eseguita e/o verificata in via preliminare.
In condi‐
no.
5. Diagnosi delle condizioni di funzionamento

Safety warnings
Please read this manual carefully before installing or servicing Softbrake.
The safety warnings do not cover all the causes that could make the device malfunction.
Do not install Softbrake if:
‐ the device is visibly damaged;
‐ one or more components are missing;
‐ the current absorbed by the brake supplied at 205 Vdc exceeds the capacity of the device (3 A).
When the device is connected to the power supply, this is subject to dangerous voltage. Softbrake must be in‐
stalled, adjusted and serviced by authorised and qualified personnel. These operations must be performed
when the device is disconnected from the mains.
Incorrect installation can cause equipment malfunctions and result in serious, even fatal, personal injuries.
Scrupulously follow the applicable safety regulations in force.
Prevent any kind of foreign object from coming into contact with the device, as it may make the product mal‐
function or lead to hazardous conditions when connected to the mains.
Make sure that the device control terminals (terminal J1, see below) do not have voltages with potentials re‐
ferring to the electrical mains. The control and power conductors must be carefully insulated from each other.
To ensure the correct operation of Softbrake and to prevent any risk of fire, use cables suitable for the current
absorbed by the brake and the length of the connection.
The examples and diagrams contained in this manual are provided for demonstration purposes only. The con‐
tents of this manual are subject to change without prior notice. We shall not be held liable under any circum‐
stances for indirect or consequential damage, resulting from the use or application of the device.

SOFTBRAKE
Use and installation handbook
1. Introduction
The Softbrake device is an electronic board that ensures a high level of flexibility in the power supply of electro‐
magnetic brakes.
It acts as a 'smart' power supply for 205V DC voltage brakes and applies an electronically controlled voltage
curve to the brake, to make the mechanical opening and closure more comfortable (soft).
The voltage curve must be adjusted by finding the most suitable configuration of dip switch SW1 (see Figure 1 and
diagram below) for the mechanical and electromagnetic characteristics of the brake.
2. Installation
Brake connections
Softbrake can only be used with electromagnetic brakes with 205 V DC voltage and current absorbed <= 3A.
Terminal J4.
‐ The Softbrake requires a 220 Vac single phase AC supply voltage.
‐ The earth connection must be made in one of the two central terminals.
Terminal J1.
‐ The brake control input must be connected to a dry contact.
‐ When the contact is open, the brake coil is not powered; when the contact closes the board delivers the brake
supply voltage.
Terminal J2.
‐ The brake coil must be connected to output terminal J2.
‐ The centre of terminal J2 must NOT be connected.

SOFTBRAKE
Use and installation handbook
Before using the board always make sure that the brake powered by Softbrake does not absorb current exceed‐
ing 3 A.
Description of operation
The Softbrake board has the dual function of making brake opening and closure 'soft', by applying a power supply
with the following characteristics:
During opening:
a) voltage applied with a ramp trend with a fixed time of 1500 ms in order to make brake opening quieter
and more comfortable;
b) final voltage with fixed value equal to 205 d.c.;
During closure:
c) voltage reduced to zero with special trend to dampen the stroke of the mobile core and dampen its me‐
chanical impact (gentle brake closure).
Brake closure adjustment
The adjustment of the brake closure (by de‐energising it ‐ section c) must be suitable for the type of brake
connected, its intrinsic mechanical characteristics and the size of its air gap.
The adjustment must be made by suitably setting dip switch SW1, on which up to 16 different brake supply
voltage curve configurations can be selected.
The best configuration must be found empirically, by trial and error.
Guidelines for adjusting dip switch SW1
Note: if you want to use Softbrake as a simple 205V d.c. brake power supply unit, without any special care or inter‐
est in comfort when opening and closing, set configuration 0 (zero).
If you intend to use the board to ‘correct’ the natural brake behaviour, the following procedure, referring to Table
1 below, can be used as a guideline.

SOFTBRAKE
Use and installation handbook
1) Set configuration 6 (group B in the table) and assess the brake response during closure. (Note: in many cas‐
es configuration 6 may already provide an acceptable result).
2) Assess whether the mechanical impact is felt during closure:
2.1) immediately after the brake closure command
or
2.2) with a delay of a few tenths of a second.
3) In the case of section 2.1), change the configuration of dip switch SW1 by moving from block B to block D
(from configuration 6 to 15) and assess the brake response until the best block is found.
4) In the case of section 2.2), change the configuration of dip switch SW1 by moving from block B to block A
(from configuration 6 to 0) and assess the brake response until the best block is found.
5) Inside the block identified as the best one, the optimum configuration can be selected, also with the
same criterion, by assessing whether the mechanical impact of the brake is felt during closure:
5.1) immediately after the brake closure command
or
5.2) with a delay of a few tenths of a second.
6) In the case of section 5.1), change the configuration of dip switch SW1, moving from the fourth to the
first configuration (Example: Block C ‐ from 11 to 8) to find the optimum brake behaviour.
7) In the case of section 5.2), change the configuration of dip switch SW1, moving from the first to the
fourth configuration (Example: Block C ‐ from 8 to 11) to find the optimum brake behaviour.
8) In the light of sections from 1 to 7, the best configuration is the one that guarantees the most comfort‐
able brake response during closure, when it is de‐energised.
Figure 1 shows an example of how dip switch SW1 must be set in configuration 10 (0101).

4. Important notes
Using Softbrake does not replace proper mechanical adjustment of the brake. This must always be per‐
formed and/or checked in advance.
Softbrake minimises the acoustic impact of the electromagnetic brake during opening and closing, only
when associated with the correct mechanical adjustment of the brake.
Softbrake introduces a delay in the brake closure to make it more comfortable. It must only be used
when the lift is operating in normal service conditions. In emergency conditions, Softbrake must be ex‐
cluded, the brake voltage must be interrupted on the DC side of the rectifier bridge, in order to mini‐
mise the response time of the brake and ensure the maximum possible safety conditions.
Softbrake introduces a delay in the brake opening and closure to make them more comfortable. For this
reason:
A. In the control panel, the delay time for controlling the switch‐over of the brake microswitches (for
convenience, we define this time Del‐A) must be suitably set, in order to prevent unnecessary alarms
of the device monitoring the correct operation of the brake.
B. On the inverter, the time for keeping the motor at zero speed (for convenience, we define this time
Del‐B) must be longer than that required for the brake to close in 'soft' mode.
It must be Del‐B > Del‐A.
C. In the control panel, the opening delay of the contactors (which we shall call Del‐C) after arrival of the
car at the floor must be longer than Del‐B. It must be Del‐C > Del‐B.
5. Operating conditions diagnostics
The board has three LEDs for signalling and diagnostics.
DL1 on: board powered, normal operation
DL1
DL2 off: board not powered or faulty
DL2 on: brake control active (closed)
DL2
DL2 off: brake control off (open)
DL3 flashing: adjustment in progress (brake powered)
DL3 DL3 flashing 3 times out of 4: economizing in progress
DL3 off: adjustment complete (brake not powered)
