CURING PHASE
After the animal has been skinned, the raw hides are cured with common sea salt. The salt penetrates
the hides, absorbing part of the water to prevent bacteria attacking the hides while they are
transported to the tannery. The hides are then dried to remove any excess water.
BEAMHOUSE PHASE
The beamhouse phase prepares the hides for tanning and involves soaking, liming, fleshing and
splitting.
Soaking: during this phase, the hides re-absorb all the excess water extracted in large rotating
wooden drums, where they are cleaned from all impurities.
Liming: in this phase a salty base and a mix of other additives is used to treat the hide and to help
eliminate unnecessary elements, such as hair and additional proteins: this is the unhairing process.
In order to facilitate this process, excess hide’s parts are eliminated.
Fleshing and skiving: once limed in large rotating bins, the hide is now ready for removal of
undesired parts. This process, called fleshing or scudding, involves removing the epidermal layer of
the hide.
Splitting: this is one of most important phases and consists in splitting longitudinally the leather in
two layers: the outer layout of the hide, the grain layer and the commonly known split layer.
