SONNET VII

When the Nature made her chief work, Stella’s eyes,

In colour black why wrap’d she beams so bright?
Would she in beamy black, like painter wise,
Frame daintiest lustre, mix’d of shades and light?
Or did she else that sober hue devise,
In object best to knit and strength our sight,
Lest if no veil those brave gleams did disguise,
They sun-like should more dazzle than delight?
Or would she her miraculous power show,
That whereas black doth make all beauties flow?
Both so and thus, she minding Love should be
Placed ever there, gave him this mourning weed,
To honour all their deaths , who for her bleed.

TRADUZIONE

Quando la natura fece il suo capolavoro, gli occhi di Stella,

perché avvolse quei raggi così splendenti con il colore nero?
Essa volle come un pittore esperto, con la tecnica del chiaro scuro (nero con sprazzi
di luce – ossimoro )
Creare una lucentezza squisita mescolando ombra e luce
Fu questo che la natura volle? O invece essa realizzò quella tinta/ sfumatura
Al fine di rafforzare e saldare la nostra vista.
Nel caso / per paura che non ci fosse un velo che schermasse i bagliori splendidi degli
occhi di Stella,
essi, come il Sole, ci abbaglierebbero più che ci delizierebbero.
O invece essa ha voluto mostrare il suo potere miracoloso,
dato che mentre il nero sembra essere il contrario della bellezza,
essa riesce a far apparire perfino in nero tutte le bellezze?
E’ così ma anche cos’ ( dà varie ipotesi, ma adesso dà quella definitiva ) : ricordando
che l’amore dovrebbe stare
Sempre là (in the eyes ) , gli diede ( all’amore ) questo vestito a lutto ( schermo nero )
Per onorare tutte le morti di coloro i quali sanguinano per lei.

La melanconia si associa alla genialità e non alla pazzia, i grandi artisti e poeti sono
affetti da melanconia ( MELANCHOLY).
E’ una commedia d’amore recitata sotto le stelle poiché Astrophil è colui che ama le
stelle.
Ci sono 4 humors : l’umore più sano è il sangue, l’umore anomalo è la bile nera (
influenza la parte psicologica dell’essere umano ) , persona sanguigna che si gode la
vita.
Quarto umore : bile o collera nera , melhancolic.
The subject is the Nature , there are two non conventional ideas in the first 2 lines,
great revolution:
The eyes od the beloved are not fair, but dark. Hair is actually blonde.
The voice of Astrophil is lyrical and presents the Nautre as a creative power ( not
GOD , pagan way ).
Stella’s eyelashes are beams ( raggi ) this is a common metaphor.
Her eyes are a black Sun , one of the central ideas of alchemy and an oxymoron that
is the union of 2 terms that bear opposite meanings ).
The line 10 is very important because there is a sort of rebellion to the tradition.
Astrophel devotes almost the entire poem to praising Stella’s eyes.
