SONNET XXXII

Traduzione

Morfeo, figlio vitale del sonno mortale

Tu sei testimone della vita per coloro che mentre vivono, muoiono.
Spesso sei un profeta, spesso un narratore di storie
Anche un poeta, mentre i miei umori se ne vanno/ mentre sto morendo.
Perché tu hai un potere così forte su di me,
che io in realtà grazie a te, nonostante io dorma, sono sempre conscio.
Anzi, grazie a te , riesco a vedere Stella.
Tu insegni / Stella insegna ai miei occhi ciechi a sorridere e a piangere.
Ma per amicizia ti dico questo
Dove hai l’avorio, i rubini , le perle e l’oro,
che possiamo rappresentare la sua pelle, le labbra, i denti e i capelli così bene ?
Sciocco risponde Morfeo “ i tesori che tu cerchi non sono contenuti in nessuna India,
Ma questi tesori sono nel tuo cuore, e mentre mio padre ti fa un sortilegio / ti
ammaglia / ti fa addormentare,
io rubo la dolce immagine di Stella per me dal tuo cuore.

Morpheus is the Gold of sleep, he is the central mythological figure in the sonnet.
Morpheus is highlighted , is the God of dreams, he is the son of Hypnos.
The main feature of Morpheus is to take the shape of human beings and to appear
in dreams (where he has wings ).
In the line 3th and 4th Sidney refers to the shapeshifter characteristic of Morpheus.

The poet is the prophet, poeta vate ( Vates = latin ) he is an intermediary between
humas and divinities.
There are four colours that describe all the elements that Astrophel wants:
• Ivory white skin
• Rubies red lips
• Pearl white teeht
• Gold golden hair , the 5th is black, seems to be forgotten = Stella’s eyes.

These elements describe the Stella’s beauty.
