concept molto diversi tra loro. Che cosa c’è in
comune con Sintesi?
Nido e Birdcage 75th avevano segnato i due lati della
ricerca Pininfarina a cui si ispira anche Sintesi: la
sportività della dream car Birdcage75th e la ricerca
di funzionalità di Nido. Il tutto iniettato da una forte
vocazione al futuro e racchiuso in un involucro di
bellezza espressione della linea Pininfarina.

We therefore modelled the car around the four
passengers and their needs for space and safety.
The result is that the passengers have been placed
in a low, dynamic position inside a car that features a
highly aerodynamic exterior.
What does Sintesi have in common with Nido and
Birdcage 75th, Pininfarina’s most recent concepts?
Nido and Birdcage 75th had marked the two aspects
of Pininfarina research which also inspires Sintesi: the
sportiness of Birdcage 75th dream car and the search
for functionality in Nido. Everything was injected with
a strong vocation for the future and encapsulated in
a beautiful casing expressing the Pininfarina line.
How would you define the stylistic research in this
project?
Faithful to the canons inherent in Pininfarina styling.
Like all Pininfarina cars, rather than describe Sintesi,
you should look at it, touch it, be excited by it, want to
drive it and take a trip in it into the future of the car.

Il centro design di Cambiano, cuore della

creatività Pininfarina, è composto da persone
con un’età media di 35 anni. Ai designer,
grafici, architetti e progettisti italiani, si
sono affiancati negli anni designer giunti da
Londra, Lione, New York, Belgrado ed altre
città. Il risultato è un gruppo di persone
con una visione fortemente internazionale,
ma tutti concentrati sull’adesione allo stile
Pininfarina, basato sull’innovazione continua,
sull’eleganza, sulla essenzialità che mira alla >3
bellezza. Una somma di elementi che crea
l’emozione dei prodotti Pininfarina.

The Cambiano design centre, the heart of
Pininfarina creativity, is made up of people
with an average age of 35. Alongside
designers, graphic artists, architects and
design engineers from Italy, other designers
over the years have come from London, Lyon,
New York, Belgrad and other cities.

una superficie continua che, iniziando dal parafango anteriore,
corre lungo il fianco dell’auto, e in modo naturale si fonde con
il paraurti posteriore e poi ruota attorno al finestrino laterale per
immergersi nuovamente sotto il parafango anteriore. Come una
linea di Moebius, unendo insieme l’interno e l’esterno della vettura.

“Liquid” Packaging
Iniziamo questo viaggio dentro Sintesi. Quale è
l’aspetto più innovativo della vettura?
Sicuramente un nuovo modo di concepire la vettura
che abbiamo definito “Liquid” Packaging.
Nelle auto di oggi la meccanica ha un impatto
determinante sull’architettura della vettura limitando
la libertà del designer di progettare abitacolo e linea
esterna. Grazie alle nuove tecnologie è possibile
distribuire gli spazi in maniera più armonica partendo
dall’uomo e dalle sue esigenze. E Sintesi ne è una
dimostrazione concreta.
Affascinante, ma cosa significa in concreto?
Le nuove tecnologie sviluppate da Nuvera — fuel cells
e batterie — permettono un utilizzo più sofisticato
e integrato degli spazi, consentendo di creare
geometrie più adattabili, regalando al designer
maggiore libertà. Il metodo “Liquid” Packaging è una
metafora della possibilità di frammentare parti una
volta compatte e monolitiche che ora, quasi come
un liquido, possono occupare spazi prima inutilizzati,
permettendo di creare forme intorno all’uomo.
Come è stato applicato in Sintesi questo nuovo
approccio?
L’applicazione del “Liquid” Packaging ha sconvolto
gli equilibri volumetrici tradizionali. Innanzitutto
ci ha permesso di liberare lo spazio anteriore
normalmente occupato dal motore: le fuel cells sono
state infatti suddivise in 4 blocchi che gravitano
intorno alle ruote. Sistemando questi elementi e le
altre parti della propulsione nella parte bassa della
vettura abbiamo così ottenuto una distribuzione
migliore del peso e un abbassamento del baricentro,
elementi importanti per la dinamica di guida.
Il risultato è che lo spazio per le persone - in
proporzione al volume totale della vettura - è
molto più ampio, senza peraltro compromettere la
sportività della linea che presenta un profilo molto
disteso, elegante e affilato.
A chi guida e a chi viaggia in Sintesi abbiamo quindi
assicurato uno spazio armonico e una visibilità
inusuale. A tutto questo abbiamo voluto aggiungere
l’esperienza della mobilità trasparente, per una
completa armonia ed integrazione fra l’uomo, l’auto
e il suo ambiente.

So let’s start this journey into Sintesi. What is the
most innovative aspect of the vehicle?
Unquestionably a new way of imagining the car
which we have called “Liquid” Packaging. In the cars
of today the mechanicals have a decisive impact on
the architecture of the vehicle, thereby restricting
the freedom of the designer in his work on the cabin
and external line. Due to the new technologies it
is possible to distribute space more harmoniously
to suit man and his needs. Sintesi is a concrete
demonstration of this.
Fascinating, but what does that mean in real
terms?
The new technologies developed by Nuvera – fuel
cells and batteries – allow a more sophisticated,
integrated use of space, enabling us to create more
adaptable geometries and offering the designer
greater freedom. The ”Liquid” Packaging method is
a metaphor for the possibility of fragmenting parts
that were once compact and monolithic but which
now, liquid-like, may occupy spaces that used to be
unused, so enabling us to create forms around man.
How was this new approach applied in Sintesi?
The application of “Liquid” Packaging has redefined
the balance of traditional volumes. First of all it has
enabled us to free up front space that is normally
occupied by the engine: the fuel cells have been split
into 4 sets and gravitate around the wheels.
By tucking away these elements and the other parts
of the drive train in the low part of the vehicle,
we have achieved better weight distribution and a
lowering of the centre of gravity, factors of great

Mobility
Cosa si intende per mobilità trasparente?
Oltre agli aspetti di stile Pininfarina ha sempre
cercato nei concept soluzioni per la mobilità.
Grazie alla libertà concessaci dalle tecnologie
utilizzate è stato quindi naturale pensare ad una
soluzione non solo all’interno del singolo veicolo ma
nel contesto in cui il veicolo stesso si muove (altri
veicoli e infrastrutture). Una sorta di network capace
di rendere “trasparenti” i sistemi di comunicazione
delle singole macchine e di garantire una mobilità
sicura ed efficiente.
L’idea è quindi quella di far “comunicare” le auto
tra loro?
Sì, proprio così: Sintesi comunicherà con le altre
automobili e sarà in grado di scegliere il percorso
migliore grazie alla tecnologia radio-sviluppata da
Reicom.
Questo significa che il sistema sostituisce il
guidatore?
No, anche se questo sistema ha una sua
“intelligenza” non sostituisce il guidatore, ma
interviene solo in caso di pericolo. L’intelligenza del
veicolo viene quindi usata sia dal guidatore che dal
sistema automatizzato gestito dalla vettura stessa.
L’interfaccia utente sarà molto intuitiva, utilizzerà
un linguaggio - messo a punto da Pi Shurlok - fatto
di luci e colori in grado di essere immediatamente
compreso dal guidatore senza intermediazione di
segni o icone.
What is meant by Transparent Mobility?
Apart from styling, Pininfarina has always tried to
present new mobility solutions in its concept cars.
With the freedom granted to us by the technologies
used, it was therefore natural to imagine a solution
not only for the individual vehicle, but for how
vehicles can communicate with one another whilst
in transit. A kind of network capable of rendering
“transparent” the communication systems of
individual cars and guaranteeing safe, efficient
mobility.
So you want cars to “communicate” with one
another?
Exactly: Sintesi will communicate with other cars and
will be able to select the best route thanks to the
radio technology created by Reicom.
Does this mean that the system replaces the
driver?
No, even though the system has its own “intelligence”
it does not replace the driver, but cuts in only in cases
of danger. The vehicles intelligence is therefore used
both by the driver and by the automated system
managed by the car. The user interface will be
highly intuitive, it will use a language - created by Pi
Shurlok - made of lights and colours capable of being
immediately understood by the driver with no signs
or icons in the way.

Can we therefore expect a positive impact
on traffic?
Yes, because the vehicle becomes a component in
a system that has its own degree of self-regulation,
with an evidently positive impact on traffic as a
whole.
Has this system influenced the design of the car?
Absolutely, yes. Today the shape of car is strongly
influenced by laws and regulations, for example those
for passive safety. Also as a result of pedestrian
impact regulations the front volume of the car has
become larger (and added weight). A greater content
of advanced active safety equipment, tightly tied
to the evolution of new electronic systems, can
contribute to reduce the dimensions of the traditional
devices to be installed, for the benefit of the lightness
and aerodynamics of cars. And to keep faith with the
Pininfarina “line”.

Dovremmo quindi avere un impatto positivo su

tutto il traffico?
Si, poiché la vettura diventa un componente di un
sistema che ha un suo grado di autoregolazione, con
evidenti impatti positivi su tutto il traffico.

Questo sistema ha influenzato il design dell’auto?

Assolutamente sì. Oggi la forma delle auto è
fortemente influenzata dai vincoli legislativi e
dai sistemi di sicurezza passiva, ne è un esempio
l’aumento di volume (e quindi di peso) della parte
frontale, dettato dalla normativa sulla protezione dei
pedoni. Un maggiore contenuto di dotazioni avanzate
di sicurezza attiva, strettamente legate all’evoluzione
di nuovi sistemi elettronici, può contribuire a ridurre
le dimensioni dei dispositivi da installare, con
beneficio sulla leggerezza e l’aerodinamica delle
vetture. E di mantenere fede alla “linea” Pininfarina.
