Maybe another few months and the young man would have returned home after so many hardships and anxieties passed, when at least the prison was to be a protection against other troubles of war and battle. The coffin on the shoulders of emaciated men, between the soft chanting of the chaplains is covered with an Italian flag. Each of us in his wallet, along with images of saints, or photographs of their loved ones, (I have a little Heart of Jesus, an image of the Madonna, one of St. Joan Antide Thouret, which was given to me by the Superior of the Sisters of Charity, a medal of St. Francis of Paola linked to a tricolor ribbon, but no photograph of mine) has three pieces of cloth white, red and green with no more than 3 to 1 cm, poorly sewn with a bit of thread which is differently colored. How you feel the love of homeland in prison! How we feel the guardians of our homeland!

The road that leads to Rome is also free. The German Army retreats towards the Tiber river, northwards, and leaves Rome on the June 4th, 1944. Rome celebrates the victorious American Allies and her freedom. Velletri is involved in the conflict from the 8th of September, 1943 until the 2nd of June, 1944. The town of Velletri is heavily bombed by the Allies on September 8th 1943, January 22nd 1944 and on the eve of every major battle. Why? Because Velletri is situated on the Appia Road and very close to Rome. At that time, the Appia and Casilina were the main roads used by the German Army to support their troops. The Allies decided to bomb those roads to weaken their adversaries despite the knowledge that many civilians would be killed as well. Most of the citizens of Velletri abandoned their homes and sought refuge in the countryside and the mountains; they endured much suffering and survived on vegetables they found in the fields. During the last days of May, the town of Velletri was heavily bombed, even though it was already devastated.

This confirms the news that Rome has surrendered to General Kesselring,... so we are completely in the hands of the Germans and Italy is considered as occupied nation. How many events in the course of a few day! What will the future? Winter 43 / 44 sees Germans and allies confront the German defensive Gustav Line that cuts Italy in half, between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic from Minturno in Ortona, passing through the town of Cassino, Lazio. Monte Cassino and its Abbey are considered, rightly or wrongly by the Allies to continue the main obstacle to the Anglo-American advanced to Rome. Four historic battles take place around Montecassino and its Abbey. The Allies array 25 divisions and each division is composed of 1500 Soldiers. The divisional headquarters asks the air force to bomb the town and the Abbey before the attack. The Allies believe that German troops are positioned inside the Abbey, so they decide to bomb it. The Abbey was, instead, a shelter for hundreds of civilians who died during the bombing.

in this nearly completely destroyed town. People were both phisically and psychologically shattered, they continued their life as if pushed by force of inertia, accepting or even enduring their terrible condition. American rangers go into action in Cisterna di Latina. The Allied Forces in Anzio ask for help to those in Cassinoand the front comes to a halt for months. A new huge allied operation (called Diadem in code, 11 May 1944) is planned. No more single operations, but a full front which will attack incessantly throwing every man, every bullet and every bomb towards the enemy. Two Polish divisions manage to conquer Montecassino finally. In Anzio also the Germans are pushed away. Cisterna falls on the 25th of May 1944 during an American operation Now the Texas division points at Velletri attacking on both sides, but the Germans resist tenaciously. Italian civilians remain on the territory, refusing to be evacuated, German armed soldiers have been sharing with them hunger, cold, bombs and lice for months. German weakened soldiers will often try to steal food from civilians or they force them to build military defensive works, but there is no evidence that they make groundless acts of violence unless they are under threat. The Germans will be pitiless with hard reprisals, after every attack from civilians. At Pratolungo, because of a quarrel for food, a German soldier is killed by a civilian, causing the execution of 12 innocent inhabitans from Velletri. The Americans continue to cannonade the town, Velletri waits for them, considering them as liberators, but the German weapons keep them away from the built-up area which is by now just a pile of rubble. Fred L. Walker, the American commanding officer, discovers a breach in the German difensive lines between Velletri and Lariano. The two German divisions leave that area without any defense, the Americans take advantage of it and on the 30th of May at night they let 8000 soldiers pass over the German lines with the intent of getting hold of the hills on Monte Artemisio in order to attack the Germans from the top of the mountain. Velletri is finally freed by the Americans from the back, when the Texas division, coming down from Monte Artemisio, along Via dei Laghi, enter the town through Piazza Garibaldi at 5.00 pm on the 1st of June. The German resistance inside the walls of Velletri lasts until next morning (2nd of June) when some more Americans enter Velletri also from the south through Porta Napoletana. There was nothing but a pile of rubble in Velletri. There were corpses, in the streets, of innocent people and soldiers who had fought the battle with honour. More than 1000 civilians had died. Nobody knows exactly how many civilians died in the area of Velletri during the invasion. About 70 American soldiers, who died in Velletri, have a name and they are buried in Nettuno cemetery. Many more were sent back home. The number of German soldiers who died in Velletri is not known. velletri the 2nd of June 1944, the town is free The war went on in italy until the 25th of april 1945

The danger for the inhabitants of Nvodari came also from the existence of Mamaia airdrome where there were often deadly incidents. As a consequence, the inhabitants did not use anymore the street passing through Mamaia toward Constana, but that passing through the Black Valley (Decree, Air Bombardment and Shooting Centre Nvodari Municipality, 3rd June 1944). There are still numerous testimonies back to the period when Romania was taking part in the war besides USSR and its allies against Germany. These documents prove the impact of this situation over the people of Nvodari, whom had a lot to suffer because of the abuses of the soviet soldiers during the Russian occupation. For example, in the document of the month of August there are 170 soldiers mentioned forcing the inhabitant of the area to give a great deal of food to them daily. The inhabitants informed the commander that they did not have such an amount of supplies and that they did not have the money to buy such either. In the same time there were air raids and pillages that brought chaos to the little city. As the document of 9th November 1944 reads, the inhabitants of Nvodari sent a note to the Constana County Official, complaining about the abuses of the soviet soldiers stationed in Mamaia, who had not only killed three Romanians, but also attacked the civil population, during the day and night as well. Given that the situation worsened on the expense of the peaceful population, on 18th October 1944, the office of Constana county announced the mayors and the police chiefs that, as per the order of the Great General Staff, all abuses of the soviet army must end, as well al the incidents with the inhabitants of the area. All the expenses necessary to the Russian army had to be supplied only by the Romanian Government which would give orders for the acquisition and distribution of the necessary products. In case the soviet soldiers would try to take by force any state or private goods, the army, the police and special forces had to strongly prevent it, even making use of force. If not, all the officials and the soldiers who would not defend with their last drop of blood the state goods that they had to guard, would be brought in front of the Martial Court.

Levacuazione inizia gioved, 3 ottobre 1940. I bambini erano ospitati in hotel, conventi, ristoranti o in scuole elementari.

Nonostante tutto, molti bambini rimangono ugualmente a casa.
Restare in contatto era difficile e linfluenza nazional-socialista aveva carta bianca.
I professori erano molto differenti.

kinderlandverschickung (kLv)
Kinderlandverschickung means that children, toddlers and mothers were sent to the countryside during World War II in order to protect them from air raids, which were a constant menace in some areas. By the end of the war up to 2 million children had been evacuated. This action started on Thursday, October 3, 1940. Later towns like Essen, Cologne and Dsseldorf were affected because the Ruhr district was regarded as the ordnance depot of the German Empire and therefore bombed regularly. Other towns from other areas Germany soon followed. The camps of KLV varied considerably as did the size of the groups. The children were lodged in hotels, monasteries, youth hostels, inns or village schools. Later whole school classes were evacuated. The camp communities were separated according to gender and led by a teacher and a camp leader, who was often an older pupil. Inspectors and representatives of the Hitler Youth controlled these groups. Children from areas threatened by air raids had to be evacuated after a warning about air raids had been issued. Therefore, children at the age of ten had to be accommodated in foster families. Sometimes, schools from Baden-Wurtemberg were sent to towns like Duisburg.
Daily routine
The daily routine was strictly organized. Children were woken up at 6.30 am., washed themselves, made their beds, fulfilled their duties and had breakfast at 7.30 am after the greeting. Then they had lessons. A strict and full programme followed which ended with dinner. At 9 to 9.30 pm. they had to go to bed. KLV was a kind of education camp with national socialist drill including experience in the community, songs, field exercises, marching columns symbolic ceremonies. It was a hard time for those children who did not like physical education or who thought in a different way.
Parents scepticism
Gerhard Kock: Even though it can be suggested that parents wanted their children to be save in the camps of KLV, they were less willing to take part in this measurement when the war went on. The Leader of the district Essen (Gauleiter, as they were called during the Nazi period) Josef Terboven ordered that several school of certain towns were sent to the countryside at the end of June 1943. It was ordered that in those places where air raids were a constant danger schools would be evacuated and lessons in public schools was suspended. Families who did not have any relatives in districts which were not endangered by air raids were forced to send their children to these camps if they did not want to restrict their childrens education or violate the rules of compulsory school attendance. In addition to that there was the pressure of the party and the administration.
181
If possible, younger siblings and mothers who were not obligated to work were supposed to leave the towns and be evacuated to the countryside. Despite all advertising campaigns [] most of the parents refuse Kinderlandverschickung because the children are separated from the family. In Hamburg, only 1,400 of the 70,000 school children have applied for Kinderlandverschickung. [] It can be observed that children are returned to their homes. The resistance of the parents towards KLV was considerable; they felt that their children were estranged from them. This observation was stated in a letter by the schools inspector to the chief administrator of county Dsseldorf from 4 May 1943. Therefore, the vernacular called KLV Kinderlandverschleppung (which meant that the children were dragged away from their normal life). In the beginning, however, government and party alike observed closely that there was no force used towards the parents and the children regarding KLV. Due to the rising pressure, which was used by the school inspector towards those families who had not sent their children yet, KLV became more or less obligatory. Many children stayed at home though. KLV campaigned with a good diet the great possibilities of recreation, protection, undisturbed lessons and a good education in a community. The parents skepticism towards KLV was not dissolved. Limitations of traffic connections, censorship of letters led to limited contacts between children and their parents. Parents visiting days only existed in 1943, which were organized with special trains; they were abolished later. In the town of Bochum, for example, only about 40% of the children were sent to the countryside by KLV. A complete evacuation of the children did not happen in any of the towns in the Rhineland or in Westphalia.
Burggymnasium/ruhr district
In March 1943 Burggymnasium was completely destroyed during an air raid. After that students were sent to another school. Therefore, it can be concluded that there were only few children part of KLV. At the beginning of 1943 250,000 children of the age between 10 and 14 years and their teachers from the Ruhr district part of KLV.
Conclusion
Children who took part in KLV were better protected and suffered less from the effects of the war. Still, the parents remained skeptical about this project, because they were (often) separated from their children, keeping
182
in touch was difficult and the national socialist influence in education was unhindered. When parents did not apply their children to KLV at the beginning of the campaign, constant and intense advertising for that project was started and whole classes were sent away. Some parents sent their children to relatives if possible to protect them from the bombing as well as from the influence of Hitler Youth.
were sent to Helmholtz School while the building was repaired in a makeshift fashion. In February 1941 we returned to our building. It was there that I experienced what many pupils dream of today: The school burnt down. I was there when it happened. It was the most horrifying experience of the whole war. We were sitting in front of the school. Taking pictures was strictly prohibited, but nobody ever cared. Pictures were published in the newspaper anyway. I was there on 5 March. It was so catchy because I was there in the first place because I was lazy. The next day we had to write a test in Chemistry. I didnt feel like writing it, therefore, I volunteered for night duty because I didnt have to come during the first two lessons the next day. So were were at school and at 9 oclock that night there was air raid alarm. We looked towards the cathedral in the north and saw a wall of lights. One light next to the other. Then Christmas trees - as these markings were called - were thrown. We hadnt seen them before, we didnt know them. Before that the English had only thrown some bombs. Now the inner city was divided into rectangles. And these Christmas trees stayed in the air and showed were the rectangles ended. The pilots had to throw their bombs within these rectangles. That was the first major air raid in Essen. More than 450 planes came and attacked the inner city. The house next to the school was hit as well. We witnessed everything. Pupils: Did you witness this event as well, Mrs Grieving? Mrs Grieving: That Friday night I was sitting on a transport and was being evacuated again. Around 9 oclock we were in the Sauerland area (southeast of the Ruhr district). We looked towards the Ruhr district and saw a red sky. Everything was burning. Pupils: Did you follow politics back then? Did you know what the war was all about? Mr Werner: We were ten years at that time and had to join German Young Folk. That was our first link with politics as it were, it was an institution for ten to fourteen year old boys. When you were 14 years old you had to join Hitler Youth. You couldnt do anything about that. Thinking of Young folk I only remember going to youth hostels and only rarely playing cross-country games. Regarding Hitler Youth this was different we where prepared for war there. Our leaders were aged 17 or 18. They were quite strict and had been trained as leaders so that they were able of leading groups. We often had to appear for marching on Sunday mornings so that we couldnt go to church. It was prohibited by all means. We were raised as Catholics in our class, therefore the Nazis made sure that we did not attend Sunday service. If we went to church instead of attending the meetings of the Hitler Youth, we would be picked up by police and taken home. And that meant punishment in the Hitler Youth as well. There were severe punishments like being locked up without food except water and bread and things like that. But all these things happened outside school.

187

spead. The bombing destroyed part of the villa of the Marquises Ramirez, killing the couple and their son Joseph. The attack gave rise to military operations in the Reggino territory by the Anglo-American troups. Fear increased further in the following months, as Reggio owned structures important for military control of the area. The military garrisons along the Reggine coasts of the Strait strenuously . During these months air attacks continued, the General of the Anglo-Americans troups were particularly interested in the area of Reggio Calabria, considerated as a strategic point for further advance. The air raids of the allies proceded for a long time, and were bombings caused damage to the city of Reggio and the surrounding area. In addition to the air attacks, the Allies undertook the fleet that, with the fire of the cannons was trying to destroy the coastal defenses. The bombing on 6 May 1943 was just hatched by the allied Generals to destroy the military targets in the area of Reggio Calabria, and the bombers Liberator under the command of the officers Doolittle and Spazz left from Benghazi, Libyas air base, with piercing and incendiary bomb loads . The city was caught off guard, in fact no one expected possible incursion of that proportion that the umpteenth bombardment occurred in Messina. Stategic areas of the city were targated including the port , where some were warships were berthed among which the Ascari and Lancer, destroyers and after German ships that were supposed to supply the troups in Tunisia and which infortunately were destroyed .Another goal foreseen was the destruction of the military structures of the city, but they werent affected. The area of Saint Catherine was the one that paid the greatest consequences of this attack, as near the port but the mine bombs caused considerable damage as they didnt explode on impact, piercing the buildings for the enormous weight and they exploded 15 seconds later procuring furthur damage by the blast. The Damage suffered in other areas of the city were anyweay serious: a bomb hit the archdiocesan seminary located near the Cathedral, another are struck the military district, and the other got the civilian areas in Santa Caterina, Tremulini and the Port and Carmine square. The townspeople panicked, many buildings were a heap of ruins. The local government tried to limit the damage, while masses of people contributed to retrieve the dead and rescue the wounded remained under the rubble. It was above all the attentions of the Italian military and civilians and the Italian soldiars that saved many lives as the authorities were concerned only in defending the territory, without giving almost no contribution to the resene operations, except for the military zones affected. Another brief incursion occurred on May 9. The Military operations cost a lot to the Allies, especially in human terms and means, as the excellent anti-craft defenses of the Germans were well organized and extremely efficient. The 400 guns were placed in key points and the shape of the area contributed to create a crossfire to which the bombers

couldnt escape. During the raids of 1943 Reggio went through a very difficult period. Meanwhile, the infantry came to Messina on August 17, and Reggio was encircled, with the Port and the airport not longer usable and communication lines destroyed by bombings. The breakthrough came in the following months, when September 3, 1943, Brigadier General Giuseppe Castellano, delegated by the commander Pietro Badoglio signed the short armistice, by which established the cessation of hostilities between the Allies and Italians, was this event allowed the landing in Calabria of the Anglo-American trops, but in the same day the High Command sent in defense to Stormtroopers of 5 Wing, an air force patial commanded by Major Joseph Cenni. The patrol was shot down and in the crash the Major died as well. This was the last offensive against the Allies. The landing took place along the litoral of Reggio Calabria but, especially along the coasts of Gallico and Catona. Mayor Michael Barbaro got the city to the Allies as a sign of surrender. Afterwards the high-ranking of the Allied army arrived in the city among them General Dwight David Eisenhower. Antonio Priolo was appointed Major, anti-fascist known to the people, engaged in politics as leader of the Socialists. In 1944 the war was almost over, and the conflict had moved to the North of the Italy. Reggio Calabria went through a difficult political, social and economic crisis. Thefts and robberies were frequent, especially in the few houses remained undamaged. Antonio Priolo became governor of the province and gave way to Diego Andiloro belonging to the same political ideologies. At once they were taken stops to establish certain order in town. First ex Fascist were caught and condemned accused of illicit enrichment, and then move then the Institution of hosing Commission entrusted to Enzo Misefari that regulated the division of the aport means, and hit sometimes stipulated how many members of a family should live in the some house. Meanwhile, the life for the citizens showed a gradual recovery, economic too. The leftist parties began to organize themselves, demonstrating in the streets or getting speeches in front of people, taking advantage of this moment of crisis. Some economic activities were opened especially next the centre Radio programmes resumed. Radio Bari broadcast news of the war and, in the June 10, 1944, the governor Priolo announced the occupation of Rome by the Allied army, which fled inexorably. The Allies themselves let to the British governor Lommon oversee the political work. On April 24, 1945 the citizens heard the news of the death of Mussolini, and many people went down the squares to acclaimed the Allies as liberators, almost forgetting that these latter hade devastate the city in May 1943. Reggio C., during the conflict in Italy, had a remarkable position especially for the strategic perspective, thanks to its central location in the Mediterranean sea. The fleet instead of docking in the North Africa could now rely on the ports of Reggio and Messina, while the airport was used as a stopover for refuelling and moving of men and military equipment. The Allies pro191
vided the city wite food and supplies for the population and the helped local authorities in the recovery, thanks to their efficient meaus. It was above all the commitment of citizens and local institutions that gave great impulse to the work of reconstruction in the following years. Many are the soldiers who fought this war : they are the real heroes, noble, sublime men who lost their lives and that at best, returned among their loved ones, their wives and children so they have started to live as free men. Vincent Scappatura is one of many soldiers unknown to most people but he made the history. A man who has fought this war, who suffered with hunger, and for the distance. But he was lucky enough to return .... His witness , collecting a few years before his death, shows what are the indelible scars in the life of a man, a husband, a father, a grandfather. Mr. Vincent tells his story recalling events and people who cross over and blend into the labyrinth of memory. Sitting by the window, where he usually spent his days, our hero describes in detail his journey from Lazarus, his hometown, to Montenegro and France and then around the entire peninsula during the years of the second World War. His story make us understand how all that is written in history books is not only true but it is also very close to us. Mr. Vincent tell us how his warstarted? I was a fighter in 1940. I was called when I was only twenty-five and sent to Montenegro by ship where our Queen Helen was born . We landed there and we started to fight. The Montenegrins were people wild and we could not find out where they had hidden. We conquered Albania, Montenegro, then we were caught in France and taken to a concentration camp. Was hein a concentration camp? But was he a soldier or partisan? I was captured by the Germans after the armistice. For three days we were sitting doing nothing and without eating, controlled by a German soldier to whom was missing a hand. But do not believe that the Jews were with me! I was with the companions of our division commanded by General Taro di Gioiosa Ionica but whose name . I cant remember Mr. Vincent retirned in Reggio Calabria just when the population between Scylla and Melito were living moments of the so-called Baytawn operation, the Allied landed in Calabria, on September 3, 1943. The Strait Chamel of Messina was a war scenary: fire on the ground and the sea, spinning aircraft, bursting of bombs, until the news of the Armistice a few days later, on September 8, 1943.

a tragic period for the citizens. The soldier hunted for women, killed civilians trying to hide in the basements. Such senseless terror lasted for about a week. The annihilation of Poland is the most important thing. I will announce some propaganda reason of the outbreak of the war, regardless if it is true or not. Afterall nobody will ask the winner if he has been telling the truth or not. When it comes to the war matters it is not the law but the victory that decides. This propaganda reason of the outbreak of the Second World War was Gliwice Provocation. Some German soldiers dressed up for Polish people invaded the broadcasting radio station in Gliwice on 31st August 1939 at 8 p.m. Before the World War Gliwice belonged to the Third Reich territory, and the border with Poland was 10 kilometers away from the broadcasting station. Dressed up Germans used the back doors and soon, not bothered by anybody, they reached the transmitter. They forced people working there to give them back the microphone and they broadcasted the message in Polish. Attention. Its Gliwice. The broadcasting station was seized by Polish. A few hours later German forces attacked Poland from the land, see and air. It was the beginning of the Second World War. Alike Gliwice also some part of todays Zabrze territory belonged to Germany. After Hitler came in the power, a new building was raised in the centre of our city. It was the headquarters of the secret German police called Gestapo. A lot of political prisoners were kept there and the executions of all Hiltler opponents were carried out there. After Zabrze was liberated school was opened in a part of this building. Today we are the students of that school and the political partitions do not matter. We can live in peace and enjoy liberated and united Europe. But we still remember that tragic times.
