SOSTANTIVI NUMERABILI E NON NUMERABILI

In inglese è importante imparare a distinguere i sostantivi numerabili e non numerabili poiché si impiegano in modo
diverso.

SOSTANTIVI NUMERABILI

I sostantivi numerabili designano cose che si possono contare. Essi hanno una forma singolare e una plurale; la forma
singolare può essere usata con l'articolo "a" o "an". Per chiedere la quantità di un sostantivo numerabile, si usa
l'espressione "How many?" seguito dal sostantivo al plurale.

SOSTANTIVI NON NUMERABILI

I sostantivi non numerabili designano cose che non possono essere contate. Possono riferirsi a idee astratte o qualità,
oppure oggetti fisici troppo piccoli o senza forma per essere contati (liquidi, polveri, gas, ecc.). I sostantivi non
numerabili sono usati con il verbo al singolare e, in genere, non dispongono di una forma plurale.

Non è possibile utilizzare a/an con i sostantivi non numerabili. Per esprimere la quantità di un sostantivo non
numerabile si usano parole o espressioni come some, a lot of, much, a bit of, a great deal of oppure una misura esatta
come a cup of, a bag of, 1kg of, 1L of, a handful of, a pinch of, an hour of, a day of. Per chiedere la quantità di un
sostantivo non numerabile, si usa l'espressione "How much?"

Alcuni sostantivi sono numerabili in altre lingue ma non sono numerabili in inglese e quindi bisogna usarli applicando
le regole per i sostantivi non numerabili.

Attenzione al sostantivo hair. In inglese è generalmente non numerabile e quindi non prevede un plurale, ma diventa
numerabile quando si riferisce a singoli peli o capelli.

 I washed my hair yesterday.

 My father is getting a few grey hairs now. (riferito ad alcuni capelli singoli)

 I found a hair in my soup! (riferito a un singolo capello)
