Colonic malakoplakia is an uncommon granulomatous development of cells resulting from the impaired
capacity of the mononuclear cells to eliminate the phagocytosed bacteria, and in rare cases it can also
affect the gastrointestinal tract. We report the case of a 78-year-old female patient that was admitted to
hospital by The Emergency Department with the diagnosis of bowel obstruction, confirmed by the
clinical and paraclinical investigations. We decided to surgically manage the case for suspicious
symptomatic colonic neoplasm. The histological examination of the surgical specimens revealed colonic
malakoplakia, characterized by the presence of the aggregated granular histiocytes and Michaelis-
Gutmann bodies. Through this paper, we want to raise awareness for Malakoplakia, which remains an
extremely rare disease that may affect multiple organs, and because it does not present specific
symptoms or clinical manifestations, the final diagnosis remains the histopathological study. The cl...

Approximately 20% of the population has elevated circulating levels of lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]), one of the
most robust predictors of cardiovascular disease risk. This is particularly true for women. Many female
patients with "normal" traditional risk factors or low atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
(ASCVD) risk scores may harbor high risk related to elevated levels of Lp(a). A retrospective, cross-
sectional study of consecutive female patients presenting to Heart Centers for Women was performed.
Discordance between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and Lp(a) was determined. The ASCVD
risk and Reynolds Risk Score models A (RRS-A) and B (RRS-B) were calculated, and level of agreement in
patients meeting treatment threshold (≥7.5% for ASCVD, ≥10% for RRS-A and RRS-B) were compared.
Among 713 women, 290 (41%) had elevated Lp(a); however, LDL-C and Lp(a) were weakly correlated (r =
0.08). Significant discordance was observed between abnormal LDL-C and Lp(a) levels...

Microbial Diversity of a Heavily Polluted Microbial Mat and Its Community Changes following
Degradation of Petroleum Compounds
by Dirk De Beer
We studied the microbial diversity of benthic cyanobacterial mats inhabiting a heavily polluted site in a
coastal stream (Wadi Gaza) and monitored the microbial community response induced by exposure to
and degradation of four model petroleum compounds in the laboratory. Phormidium- and Oscillatoria -
like cyanobacterial morphotypes were dominant in the field. Bacteria belonging to different groups,
mainly the Cytophaga - Flavobacterium - Bacteriodes group, the γ and β subclasses of the class
Proteobacteria , and the green nonsulfur bacteria, were also detected. In slurry experiments, these
communities efficiently degraded phenanthrene and dibenzothiophene completely in 7 days both in the
light and in the dark. n -Octadecane and pristane were degraded to 25 and 34% of their original levels,
respectively, within 7 days, but there was no further degradation until 40 days. Both cyanobacterial and
bacterial communities exhibited noticeable changes concomitant with degradation of the comp...

Histopathologic and Biochemical Evidence for Mitochondrial Disease Among 279 Patients with Severe
Statin Myopathy
by Reid Heffner
Statins have well-known benefits in the prevention of cardiovascular disease, however, 7-29% of patients
develop muscle side effects and up to 0.5% develop severe symptoms. Mitochondrial dysfunction has
been associated with severe statin-induced myopathy (SM); however, there is a paucity of systematic
studies in affected individuals. The goal of this study was to combine clinical and laboratory features with
quantitative biochemical and histopathologic studies of skeletal muscle biopsies from SM cases to
determine what proportion could be attributed to mitochondrial dysfunction and how many of these
had primary respiratory chain defects. A retrospective analysis was performed on patient records derived
from 279 SM patients whose muscle biopsies were referred to our clinical diagnostic laboratory for
analysis. Clinical, histopathologic and biochemical features were compared with two myopathic control
groups unexposed to statins: individuals with idiopathic mitochondrial myopathy (MMP...

Public schools in the U.S. generate about 14,500 tons of municipal solid waste daily, and approximately
42% of that is food packaging generated by school foodservice, contributing significantly to the global
packaging waste crisis. This literature review summarizes methods used to evaluate food packaging
waste in school foodservice. This review has two objectives: first, to understand which methodologies
currently exist to evaluate food packaging waste generation and disposal in school foodservice; and
second, to describe the creation of and share a practical standardized instrument to evaluate food
packaging waste generation and disposal in school foodservice. A systematic review was conducted using
the following search terms: solid waste, school, cafeteria and food packaging, waste, and school. The
final review included 24 studies conducted in school environments (kindergarten through twelfth grade
or college/university), 16 of which took place in the U.S. Food packaging waste eva...

Classification of sinus rhythm single potential morphology in patients with mitral valve disease
by Natasja de Groot
Aims The morphology of unipolar single potentials (SPs) contains information on intra-atrial conduction
disorders and possibly the substrate underlying atrial fibrillation (AF). This study examined the impact of
AF episodes on features of SP morphology during sinus rhythm (SR) in patients with mitral valve disease.
Methods and results Intraoperative epicardial mapping (interelectrode distance 2 mm) of the right and
left atrium (RA, LA), Bachmann’s bundle (BB), and pulmonary vein area (PVA) was performed in 67
patients (27 male, 67 ± 11 years) with or without a history of paroxysmal AF (PAF). Unipolar SPs were
classified according to their differences in relative R- and S-wave amplitude ratios. A clear predominance
of S-waves was observed at BB and the RA in both the no AF and PAF groups (BB 88.8% vs. 85.9%, RA
92.1% vs. 85.1%, respectively). Potential voltages at the RA, BB, and PVA were significantly lower in the
PAF group (P < 0.001 for each) and were mainly determined by the s...

Using unipolar atrial electrogram morphology as guidance for ablative therapy is regaining interest.
Although standardly used in clinical practice during ablative therapy, the impact of filter settings on
morphology of unipolar AF potentials is unknown. Thirty different filters were applied to 2,557,045 high-
resolution epicardial AF potentials recorded from ten patients. Deflections with slope ≤ − 0.05 mV/ms
and amplitude ≥ 0.3 mV were marked. High-pass filtering decreased the number of detected potentials,
deflection amplitude, and percentage of fractionated potentials (≥ 2 deflections) as well as fractionation
delay time (FDT) and increased percentage of single potentials. Low-pass filtering decreased the number
of potentials, percentage of fractionated potentials, whereas deflection amplitude, percentage of single
potentials, and FDT increased. Notch filtering (50 Hz) decreased the number of potentials and deflection
amplitude, whereas the percentage of complex fractionated poten...

Background The significance of endo‐epicardial asynchrony (EEA) and atrial conduction block (CB), which
play an important role in the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation (AF) during sinus rhythm is poorly
understood. The aim of our study was therefore to examine 3‐dimensional activation of the human right
atrium (RA). Methods and Results Eighty patients (79% men, 39% history of AF) underwent simultaneous
endo‐epicardial sinus rhythm mapping of the inferior, middle and superior RA. Areas of CB were defined
as conduction delays of ≥12 ms, EEA as activation time differences of opposite electrodes of ≥15 ms and
transmural CB as CB at similar endo‐epicardial sites. CB was more pronounced at the endocardium (all
locations P <0.025). Amount, extensiveness and severity of CB was higher at the superior RA.
Transmural CB at the inferior RA was associated with a higher incidence of post‐operative AF ( P =0.03).
EEA occurred up to 84 ms and was more pronounced at the superior RA (superior...

It is unknown to what extent atrial fibrillation (AF) episodes affect intra-atrial conduction velocity (CV)
and whether regional differences in local CV heterogeneities exist during sinus rhythm. This case-control
study aims to compare CV assessed throughout both atria between patients with and without AF.
Patients (n = 34) underwent intra-operative epicardial mapping of the right atrium (RA), Bachmann’s
bundle (BB), left atrium (LA) and pulmonary vein area (PVA). CV vectors were constructed to calculate
median CV in addition to total activation times (TAT) and unipolar voltages. Biatrial median CV did not
differ between patients with and without AF (90 ± 8 cm/s vs. 92 ± 6 cm/s, p = 0.56); only BB showed a CV
reduction in the AF group (79 ± 12 cm/s vs. 88 ± 11 cm/s, p = 0.02). In patients without AF, there was no
predilection site for the lowest CV (P5) (RA: 12%; BB: 29%; LA: 29%; PVA: 29%). In patients with AF,
lowest CV was most often measured at BB (53%) and ranged between 15 to ...

Detection of Endo-epicardial Asynchrony in the Atrial Wall Using One-Sided Unipolar and Bipolar
Electrograms
by Natasja de Groot
Endo-epicardial asynchrony (EEA) is a new mechanism possibly maintaining atrial fibrillation. We aimed
to determine the sensitivity and best recording modus to detect EEA on electrograms recorded from one
atrial side using electrogram fractionation. Simultaneously obtained right atrial endo- and epicardial
electrograms from 22 patients demonstrating EEA were selected. Unipolar and (converted) bipolar
electrograms were analyzed for presence and characteristics of fractionation corresponding to EEA.
Sensitivity of presence of EEA corresponding fractionation was high in patients (86–96%) and moderately
high (65–78%) for the asynchronous surface area for unipolar and bipolar electrograms equally. In
bipolar electrograms, signal-to-noise ratio of EEA corresponding fractionation decreased and additional
fractionation increased for electrograms recorded at the endocardium. Sensitivity of fractionation
corresponding to EEA is high for both unipolar and bipolar electrograms. Unipolar electro...

Molecular Distinction between Pathogenic and Infectious Properties of the Prion Protein
by bettina drisaldi
Tg(PG14) mice express a prion protein (PrP) with a nine-octapeptide insertion associated with a human
familial prion disease. These animals spontaneously develop a fatal neurodegenerative disorder
characterized by ataxia, neuronal apoptosis, and accumulation in the brain of an aggregated and weakly
protease-resistant form of mutant PrP (designated PG14 spon ). Brain homogenates from Tg(PG14) mice
fail to transmit disease after intracerebral inoculation into recipient mice, indicating that PG14 spon ,
although pathogenic, is distinct from PrP Sc , the infectious form of PrP. In contrast, inoculation of
Tg(PG14) mice with exogenous prions of the RML strain induces accumulation of PG14 RML , a PrP Sc
form of the mutant protein that is infectious and highly protease resistant. Like PrP Sc , both PG14 spon
and PG14 RML display conformationally masked epitopes in the central and octapeptide repeat regions.
However, these two forms differ profoundly in their oligomeric states, with PG14 RM...

O poveste fără sfârșit. Arheologia Dobrogei otomane / An endless story. Archaeology of the Ottoman
Dobruja
by Aurel-Daniel STĂNICĂ
The history of the land between the Danube and the Black Sea, which includes the chronological interval
between the 15th-19th centuries, did not enjoy the due attention. The Ottoman presence was defined as
harmful, not very popular idea, with an arid and devastated landscape and it was deeply rooted in the
political ideologies of the communist era. The Ottoman past was examined through legends and stories
and is much romanticized. Thus, misjudgements, information that is not based on documentary sources
found their place in history textbooks, providing an image not exactly in line with the data extracted
from the documents of the time. Despite the appreciable number of excavations targeting habitat
structures, necropolises, religious monuments, as well as occasional concerns for some categories of
archaeological material from the Ottoman period, the results are far from providing a detailed picture of
this period. For a space that has been under Ottoman administration for four centuries, one can speak of
Ottoman archaeology, which, according to documentary sources, can reduce the information gap when
we want to deepen the history of Dobruja. In this paper, we make a synthesis of the findings, which
highlights a representative segment for the Ottoman archaeology of Dobruja. At the end of the 14th
century, the Ottomans reached the Danube line, directly threatening the Romanian Countries. During
the same period, the territory between the Danube and the "Great Sea" - Dobruca-eli, "The Land of
Dobruja" - part of the medieval state Wallachia, was occupied by the Ottomans following the 819
campaigns after Hegira (23 March 1416-17 February 1417). According to another point of view, the
Ottomans managed to extend their actual domination over Dobruja only during the reign of Michael, the
successor of Mircea the Elder, in 1419 or the spring of 1420, the empire's boundary beingnestablished
on the line formed by the Enisala (Yeni-Sale) and Isaccea (Isakci) fortresses, which become sherds (edge
castles). Regarding the history of Dobruja, the documentary sources, here referring to Turkish chronicles
and foreign travellers’ accounts, always have the same limitations: either too few or their information is
truncated or incomplete. Archaeological research in turn has supplied the lack of documentary
information, with notable results regarding habitat structures, necropolises, religious monuments, as
well as some point concerns for certain categories of archaeological materials (pipe, Ottoman ceramics,
belt elements, ornaments etc.). The results are far from giving a detailed picture of the settlements and
communities in Ottoman Dobruja. The concerns about the archaeological approach of this period are at
the beginning, and in recent years there has been an increase in the number of studies that capitalize on
newer or older research. Through this paper, I set myself to present the results provided by the
archaeological researches concerning the Ottoman period in which Dobruja (15th-19th centuries) was
under the administration of the Ottoman Empire.

Association of statin use and clinical outcomes in heart failure patients: a systematic review and meta-
analysis
by Gani Bajraktari
Background The role of statins in patients with heart failure (HF) of different levels of left ventricular
ejection fraction (LVEF) remains unclear especially in the light of the absence of prospective data from
randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in non-ischemic HF, and taking into account potential statins’
prosarcopenic effects. We assessed the association of statin use with clinical outcomes in patients with
HF. Methods We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Google Scholar and Cochrane Central until August
2018 for RCTs and prospective cohorts comparing clinical outcomes with statin vs non-statin use in
patients with HF at different LVEF levels. We followed the guidelines of the 2009 PRISMA statement for
reporting and applied independent extraction by multiple observers. Meta-analyses of hazard ratios
(HRs) of effects of statins on clinical outcomes used generic inverse variance method and random model
effects. Clinical outcomes were all-cause mortality, cardiovascular (CV) mortali...

Sorção de compostos policíclicos aromáticos por microesferas de quitosana - PVA contendo ftalocianina

by Joni Stolberg

In the present paper, the adsorption of Astrazon Black AFDL dye onto Vietnamese diatomite has been
demonstrated. The diatomite was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, and nitrogen
adsorption/desorption isotherms. The results show that diatomite mainly constituted centric type
frustules characterized by pores as discs or as cylindrical shapes. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms
of dye onto Vietnam diatomite were investigated. The experimental data were fitted well to both
Freundlich and Langmuir in the initial concentration range of 400–1400 mg L−1. The average value of
maximum adsorption capacity,qm, calculated from Freundlich equation is statistically similar to the
average value of maximum monolayer adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir equation. The
thermodynamic parameters evaluated from the temperature dependent on adsorption isotherms in the
range of 303–343 K show that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The Webber
and pseudo-first/second-order ...

Several studies suggest differences between fibrates and statins in lowering plasma fibrinogen (Fib)
concentrations, but the evidence is not definitive. Therefore, the aim of this meta-analysis of head-to-
head randomized trials was to compare the efficacy of statins and fibrates on plasma Fib concentrations.
The literature search included Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science up to February 1st, 2015, to identify
head-to-head comparative randomized trials investigating the efficacy of fibrates vs statins on plasma Fib
concentrations. In total 22 trials with 2762 participants were included to the meta-analysis. Random-
effect meta-analysis suggested a significantly greater effect of fibrates vs statins in lowering plasma Fib
concentrations (weighted mean difference [WMD]: -40.7mg/dL, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -55.2, -
26.3, p<0.001). When the analysis was stratified according to the type of fibrate administered, there
were significant Fib-lowering effects with both bezafibrate (n=...

The aim of the study was to examine changes in carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and carotid
plaque morphology in patients receiving multifactorial cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor
management in a community-based prevention clinic. Quantitative changes in CIMT and qualitative
changes in carotid plaque morphology may be measured non-invasively by ultrasound. This is a
retrospective study on a cohort of 324 patients who received multifactorial cardiovascular risk reduction
treatment at a community prevention clinic. All patients received lipid-lowering medications (statin,
niacin, and/or ezetimibe) and lifestyle modification. All patients underwent at least one follow-up CIMT
measurement after starting their regimen. Annual biomarker, CIMT, and plaque measurements were
analyzed for associations with CVD risk reduction treatment. Median time to last CIMT was 3.0 years.
Compared to baseline, follow-up analysis of all treatment groups at 2 years showed a 52.7% decrease in

Paraquat is a pesticide that is used to control weeds but it is very poisonous to humans and
environment. Therefore, removal of paraquat from the environment is very important and in poisoning
cases that involve paraquat, the sample need to be preconcentrated prior to analysis because the
pesticide concentration may very low to be measured and in small sample size. In this research, several
types of mesoporous materials were synthesised to adsorb and desorb paraquat namely mesoporous
aluminosilicate using various saccharides templates as mesoporous directing agent which are glucose
(MAS-GLU), lactose (MAS-LAC), sucrose (MAS-SUC) and without saccharide template (MAS-WOT) and
being compared to mesoporous silica material, MCM-41. The formations of synthesised materials were
confirmed from FTIR, XRD, SAXS, XRF and surface area analysis. The characterisation results revealed
that MAS-SUC formed mesoporous aluminosilicate with ZSM-5 zeolite framework, MAS-GLU, MAS-LAC

Bioactive composites of bovine derived hydroxyapatite and boron conta ining bioactive glass were doped
with 5, 10 and 15 wt.% lanthanum oxide (La2O3). Results showed that at low sintering temperatures
(800 °C) the doping oxide of La2O3 promoted transformation to crystalline phases. Formation of
secondary phases, such as rhenanite, NaCaPO4, and calcium silicate, Ca2SiO4, were also found. La was
found to act as modifier and influenced the viscosity. The increase of La2O3 content led to decrease of
pore size. Porosity amount 48.1 %, at 15-240 μm size range were reduced, to 34.4 %, with 5-80 μm size
range and particle sizes of 0.3-6 μm to 0.092 μm, respectively. In addition to that compression strength
(MPa) and microhardness (HV) of the performed composite bioceramics were in the range of 25 – 110
MPa, and 121 – 364 HV, respectively. Our investigations suggested that the porosity type has a strong

More and more applications require early decisions, i.e. taken as soon as possible from partially
observed data. However, the later a decision is made, the more its accuracy tends to improve, since the
description of the problem to hand is enriched over time. Such a compromise between the earliness and
the accuracy of decisions has been particularly studied in the field of Early Time Series Classification. This
paper introduces a more general problem, called Machine Learning based Early Decision Making (ML-
EDM), which consists in optimizing the decision times of models in a wide range of settings where data is
collected over time. After defining the ML-EDM problem, ten challenges are identified and proposed to
the scientific community to further research in this area. These challenges open important application
perspectives, discussed in this paper.

A Novel Natural Scaffold Layer Improving Efficiency, Stability and Reproducibility of Perovskite Solar Cells
by Mahmut Kus
In this study, our hypothesis was to demonstrate the usability of a natural clay structure as scaffold layer
in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Sepiolite, which is a natural and environmentally friendly clay structure,
has a very high active surface area and can easily be dispersed in solvents. In addition we predicted that
crystallization could easily occur on their surfaces due to their surface chemistry. In the study, we firstly
used a natural clay as scaffold layer in PSCs. It is observed that, efficiency, reproducibility and stability of
PSCs have been significantly improved. Improvements in efficiency have been observed to be between
30–50% depending on the type of perovskite solvent used. In addition, the surface chemistry of the
sepiolite resulted in better crystallization as well as stability. Due to its high-water adsorption capability,
sepiolite makes the perovskite crystal more stable by trapping the residual water molecules as well as
penetrated water molecules from envi...

We propose a framework for synthesizing inductive invariants for incomplete verification engines, which
soundly reduce logical problems in undecidable theories to decidable theories. Our framework is based
on the counterexample guided inductive synthesis principle and allows verification engines to
communicate non-provability information to guide invariant synthesis. We show precisely how the
verification engine can compute such non-provability information and how to build effective learning
algorithms when invariants are expressed as Boolean combinations of a fixed set of predicates.
Moreover, we evaluate our framework in two verification settings, one in which verification engines need
to handle quantified formulas and one in which verification engines have to reason about heap
properties expressed in an expressive but undecidable separation logic. Our experiments show that our
invariant synthesis framework based on non-provability information can both effectively synthesize

Removal of copper ion (Cu2+) by using surfactant modified laterite (SML) was investigated in the present
study. Characterizations of laterite were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared
spectroscopy (FT-IR), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and total carbon analysis.
The optimum conditions for removal of Cu2+ by adsorption using SML were systematically studied and
found as pH 6, contact time 90 min, adsorbent dosage 5 mg/mL, and ionic strength 10 mM NaCl. The
equilibrium concentration of copper ions was measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-
AAS). Surface modification of laterite by anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) induced a
significant increase of the removal efficiency of Cu2+. The surface modifications of laterite by
preadsorption of SDS and sequential adsorption of Cu2+ were also evaluated by XRD and FT-IR. The
adsorption of Cu2+ onto SML increases with increasing NaCl concentration from 1 to 10 mM, but a...

Traffic congestion difficulties have resulted in low productivity, significant air pollution, and energy losses
in Owerri Metropolis, Nigeria. The paper looked at the design of a smart fuzzy logic traffic light
management module, the development of a traffic control program using an Arduino microcontroller
system, and the validation of the developed program's functionality using a Proteus circuit model to
confirm the efficiency of fuzzy signal control. The traffic light environment of a fuzzy logic controller is
simulated using Matlab software, and isolated traffic of multiple junctions is simulated using the Sumo
Urban Mobility Simulation (SUMO) environment. The performance of the traditional fixedtime controller
vs the fuzzy logic traffic light controller is examined. To allocate pedestrian crossing the right of way,
traffic light systems function in tandem with pedestrian displays. The simulation results indicated that
the overall durations for the fixed traffic light controller and suggested smart fuzzy logic traffic light
controller simulations are 1,426 seconds and 1,328 seconds, respectively. The results also showed that
the suggested smart fuzzy logic traffic light controller recorded significant waiting and movement times,
indicating its standard appropriateness for Owerri city's various crossings.

The Paradox of Axiological Coldness: An Original Husserlian Solution (draft - please refer to the
published, open-access version)
by Alexis Delamare
This paper explores the nature of our experience of values - our valueceptions. In the recent literature,
two main standpoints have emerged. On the one hand, the 'Meinongian' side claims that axiological
properties are experienced exclusively in emotions. On the other hand, the 'Hildebrandian' side
contends that since valueceptions can be 'cold', they are not accomplished in emotions but rather reside
in 'valuefeelings'-emotions, in this framework, being conceived of as reactions to the values thus
revealed. The aim of the paper is to argue that the Husserlian phenomenology of affectivity, especially as
it is developed during his Göttingen period, can help to overcome these two accounts. I start by pointing
out that, contrary to what most scholars have assumed so far, Husserl's theory of valueception is not
tantamount to Meinong's, as it is very sensitive to 'Hildebrandian' arguments (Part I). The core of the
paper is then devoted to a systematic reconstruction of Husserl's solution to this controversy. Drawing on
the analogy between thing-perceptions and value-perceptions (Part II), I show, first, that 'cold'
valueceptions are to be identified with empty apprehensions (Auffassungen) of value, in which an
emotion is not actually experienced but is anticipated in such-and-such kinaesthetic circumstances (Part
III); second, that the realization of this anticipation amounts to the fulfillment of the valueception (Part
IV). As a result, Husserl acknowledges the relevance of 'value-feelings', yet his account appears more
satisfactory than traditional 'Hildebrandian' theories in that it demystifies these 'value-feelings' by
reducing them to potential emotions.

Lately, different therapy strategies for treating or slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease
are being analyzed. Moreover, the last two decades have seen a considerable research effort directed
towards discovering the causes of Alzheimer's disease with the ultimate hope of developing safe
and effective pharmacological treatments. In addition to the therapeutic strategies based on targeted
drugs, the regimens will require the simultaneous application of neuroprotective drugs. Therefore,
although there is currently no "cure" for Alzheimer's disease, a large number of
potential therapeutic strategies emerged lately. In this small mini-review we will selectively describe
some of the compounds derived from plants that could have a great potential in the treatment of
various diseases, including Alzheimer's disease. In this way, there are many plant species that have
been traditionally used for memory disorders. The differentiated results and powerful activ...

Carbonate Clasts from Cretaceous Conglomerate Deposits of the Postăvaru Massif (Southern
Carpathians, Romania) – Depositional Environments and Biostratigraphic Remarks
by Ioan I. Bucur
The objective of this study is to describe the composition of the carbonate elements from the upper
Albian–Cenomanian Postăvaru Conglomerates. Eight sections were studied. Two major types of
conglomerates are identified in the field and thin sections: polymictic orthoconglomerates and
paraconglomerates. Carbonate clasts are dominant in both types of conglomerates. Other subordinated
clasts are composed of quartzites, sericite-chlorite schists and gneisses. Facies data allow reconstructing
the depositional environments, while microfossil assemblages were used to establish the age of the
studied carbonate clasts. The identified microfacies characterize a large variety of depositional
environments, ranging from basin to shallow water environments (platform margin and inner platform
depositional settings). The identified microfossil associations are indicative for three biostratigraphic
intervals: Kimmeridgian–Tithonian, Tithonian–Berriasian and Berriasian–? lower Valanginian.

Sheep can be experimentally infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and the ensuing
disease is similar to scrapie in terms of pathogenesis and clinical signs. BSE infection in sheep is an
animal and human health concern. In this study, the transmission in BoPrP-Tg110 mice of prions from
BSE-infected sheep was examined and compared to the transmission of original cattle BSE in cattle and
sheep scrapie prions. Our results indicate no transmission barrier for sheep BSE prions to infect BoPrP-
Tg110 mice, but the course of the disease is accelerated compared to the effects of the original BSE
isolate. The shortened incubation period of sheep BSE in the model was conserved in subsequent
passage in BoPrP-Tg110 mice, indicating that it is not related to infectious titer differences. Biochemical
signature, lesion profile, and PrP Sc deposition pattern of both cattle and sheep BSE were similar. In
contrast, all three sheep scrapie isolates tested showed an evident transmission b...

This article deals with Conrad-Martius’s conceptions of reality as “wirkliche Wirklichkeit”, being,
existence, and essence and sets them in relation to the conceptions of Aristotle, Aquinas, and Husserl. It
delves into the problems of both the hypostatization of being, where I assert that it concerns the noema
itself, and the origin of being in particular. I claim that even though Conrad-Martius rejects the
transcendental reduction, Conrad-Martius accepts the eidetic reduction and the positing of a sphere of
original and given facts, whose origin Conrad-Martius traces back to a transphysical realm, thus revealing
the grounds for the Husserlian sphere of primal facts, which itself remains beyond the reach of
phenomenological enquiries. Hence, Conrad-Martius’s and Husserl’s investigations encounter and
complement each other at the point where the real bursts into reality and becomes available for
consciousness.

environments. Now, more than ever, online learning and tools were implemented. This study aims to
systematically review the literature on the impact of the pandemic on smart learning environments. The
method adopted in this paper is a systematic literature review, and it will use the PRISMA technique. A
qualitative approach was applied in the data collection process to achieve the aim. The essential
advantage was that smart learning environments were convenient and easily adapted by students during
the pandemic. The main challenge was connectivity issues and failure to adapt to non-traditional
methods. The paper concluded a rise in the usage of smart learning environments, and educators and...

Dyslipidemia is a treatable risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease that can be addressed
through lifestyle changes and/or lipid-lowering therapies. Adherence to statins can be a clinical challenge
in some patients due to statin-associated muscle symptoms and other side effects. There is a growing
interest in integrative cardiology and nutraceuticals in the management of dyslipidemia, as some
patients desire or are actively seeking a more natural approach. These agents have been used in patients
with and without established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. We provide an updated review of
the evidence on many new and emerging nutraceuticals. We describe the mechanism of action, lipid-

Multireaction Modeling of Lead (Pb) and Copper (Cu) Sorption/Desorption Kinetics in Different Soils
by Tamer Elbana
Batch kinetic experiments were carried out to quantify and describe the sorption/desorption of Cu and
Pb in ten soils that exhibited a wide range of properties. Sorption isotherms were quantified using the
Langmuir equation, whereas modeling of sorption/desorption kinetics was described using multireaction
model (MRM). Results revealed the nonlinear sorption behavior of Cu and Pb in all soils. The ten soils
exhibited higher affinity to Pb (6.4 to 36.5 mmol kg−1) in comparison to Cu (3.6 to 22.4 mmol kg−1).
Simulation of Cu and Pb kinetic data indicated that the rate of sorption reaction was two orders of
magnitude higher than the rate of release. Considering one irreversible site in addition to one-reversible
kinetic site improved the estimation of rates of reaction for both Cu and Pb in acidic and alkaline soils. All
soils exhibited sorption/desorption hysteresis where Pb-releases ranged between <0.2% and 14.4% of
the total sorbed. The respective Cu releases ranged from <0.85...

Plant-derived polyphenols in human health: biological activity, metabolites and putative molecular
targets
by María Herranz-lópez
Edible plants such as Hibiscus sabdariffa, Lippia citriodora, Rosmarinus officinalis and Olea europaea, are
rich in bioactive compounds that represent most of the phenolic compounds families and have exhibited
potential benefits in human health. These plants have been commonly used in folk medicine for their
potential therapeutic properties in human chronic diseases. Recent evidence on these plants leads to
postulate that polyphenols may account for such effects. Nevertheless, the compounds or metabolites
that are responsible for reaching the molecular targets are still unknown. Data based on studies that
directly use complex extracts on cellular models, without considering metabolic aspects, have limited
applicability. In contrast, studies exploring the absorption process, metabolites in the blood circulation
and tissues have become essential to identify the intracellular final effectors that are responsible for
extracts bioactivity. Once the cellular metabolites are identified, co...

Background.: Hypertension control is a crucial measure to reduce cardiovascular (CV) risk, and blood
pressure (BP) treatment targets have been recently revised to address this issue. However, achieving the
recommended goal may be challenging. Objective.: We aimed to assess the prevalence of uncontrolled
hypertension according to the US hypertension guidelines among elderly participants in an Italian
nationwide epidemiological survey, the relevant clinical correlates, and the agreement with the
application of the European guidelines. Methods.: Elderly (≥65y) volunteers enrolled in an Italian
nationwide survey underwent BP measurement using standard protocols. Uncontrolled hypertension
was defined as BP≥130/80 mmHg. Agreement of this definition with those from European guidelines
(≥140/90 mmHg; ≥140/80 mmHg) was tested using Cohen’s kappa. Self-reported information on
modifiable/non-modifiable CV risk factors was also collected. Results.: Of the 13,162 treated

Introduction: Balneological treatment procedures include balneotherapy (passive immersion of the body
in mineral/thermal water), peloid therapy/mud therapy (therapeutic applications of medical peloids or
muds on human body), hydropinotherapy (drinking cures of mineral water), mineral water inhalation
therapy (inhalation of mineral water aerosols) and hydrotherapy (tap water passive immersion or aquatic
exercise in tap water). These modalities have traditionally been derived in spa resorts and usually
applied to the patients who travelled to those resorts during their stay at the spa facility/hotel. Materials
and method: The efficacy and safety of these balneological treatments when they are applied at
spa/health resorts for a number of musculoskeletal diseases have been relatively well studied in
randomized controlled trials. And the reported results mainly indicate the beneficial effects and good
safety profile of balneotherapy and/or mud therapy in patients with musculoskeletal di...

Nut and seed consumption is inversely associated with metabolic syndrome in females but not males:
findings from the 2005–2018 NHANES data
Purpose To assess the association between nut and seed consumption, both combined and separately,
and metabolic syndrome and its components, including fasting glucose, triglycerides, high-density
lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, central obesity, and blood pressure. Methods This cross-sectional analysis
used data from 22,687 adults (aged ≥ 18 years) involved in seven cycles (2005–2018) of the National
Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Habitual nut and seed intakes were estimated by
the Multiple Source Method using data from two 24-h dietary recalls. Metabolic syndrome was
ascertained using biochemical data and self-reported medication use. Sex-specific effect estimates were
obtained using logistic and linear regressions adjusting for lifestyle and socioeconomic confounders.
Results Compared to non-consumers, female, but not male, habitual consumers of either nuts or seeds
had lower odds of having metabolic syndrome (OR: 0.83, 95% CI 0.71, 0.97). Both nut intake alone an...

Therapeutic Potential of Allicin-Rich Garlic Preparations: Emphasis on Clinical Evidence toward Upcoming
Drugs Formulation
by Farukh Sharopov
Garlic has been used for a long time in human history. Allicin, the main active compound present in
freshly injured garlic, is enzymatically formed from alliin. Allicin has shown doubtless beneficial effects
and even be conceived as medicine. The present review highlights allicin-associated studies. Indeed,
clinical studies on healthy subjects have evidenced that standardized garlic treatment (900 mg/day)
significantly reduces total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (c-LDL). Besides, allicin
also led to a marked improvement in mouth opening, burning sensation, and oral health-related quality
of life on stage II oral submucous fibrosis patients. Interestingly, in children, allicin also has been
proposed for thrush prevention and as an alternative antibiotic therapy. Nonetheless, there is particular
attention to allicin bioavailability, given its high instability. Although clinical evidence has promoted allicin
release from garlic powder tablets under simulated ...

Husserl and Derrida on the Process of Sense Formation – Gaps and Excesses
by Irene Breuer
This paper deals with the problem of the origin of sense and meaning. For Husserl, the determination of
the ideal identity of something new can only take place retroactively in the totality of the preceding
series by stepping back towards the original foundation of sense. In this regard, J.Derrida questions the
ideality of the same as presence and the possibility of retrieving any arché of sense in his writings
Speech and Phenomena and Edmund Husserl's Origin of Geometry. Phenomenology is not oblivious to
these difficulties, as results from a closer reading of the correlation between idealities and sensory
experience: It will show that there are at least four interrelated gaps in the Husserlian phenomenology
which testify the difficulty in grasping a retraceable arché of sense. First, the gap between the ideality of
sense and its representation. Second, the gap between sensory and categorial intuitions, whereby both
exceed one another. Third, the gap between the ideality of sense and the sense which exceeds our
expectations. Fourth, the gap between the experience of the new that overcomes us and its
apprehension by consciousness. Hence, there is a fundamental gap between the conceptual idealities
and the essential indeterminacy of our phenomenological sensory experience, which is correlative to an
excess of one in respect to the other. In this sense, Derrida's concepts of «différance» and "invention"
allow us to conceive of this self-givenness of sense as the expression of its constant self-renewal. This
expression takes the form of a trace, which, neither present nor absent, suspends meaning and full
presence, leaving the narrative "open" for the reinvention of sense.

Radiotherapy and Immunotherapy, Combined Treatment for Unresectable Mucosal Melanoma with
Vaginal Origin
by Anca-Iulia Neagu
Gynecologic melanomas are uncommon and malignant mucosal melanomas with vaginal origin are
extremely rare, treatment strategies are limited and extrapolated from those of cutaneous melanoma. A
better understanding of the vulvovaginal melanoma’s biology and its risk factors is needed. Therapeutic
strategies include surgery, systemic therapy and radiotherapy. For vulvovaginal melanoma, surgery is
selected as the primary treatment. Immunotherapy and target treatment have recently enhanced the
systemic therapy for cutaneous melanoma (CM). Immunotherapy and new target agents demonstrated a
better survival of melanoma and might be considered as treatment of vulvovaginal melanoma.
Radiotherapy is included in the therapeutic arsenal for mucosal melanoma and may be performed on
selected patients who may receive concurrent checkpoints and inhibition neoadjuvant radiotherapy with
the purpose of reducing morbidity and mortality.

Solar Power Generation in Smart Cities Using an Integrated Machine Learning and Statistical Analysis
Methods
by Chandra Shekara CR
Presently, photovoltaic systems are an essential part of the development of renewable energy. Due to
the inherent dependence of solar energy production on climate variations, forecasting power production
using weather data has a number of financial advantages, including dependable proactive power trading
and operation planning. Megacity electricity generation is regarded as a current research problem in the
modern features of urban administration, particularly in developing nations such as Iran. Machine
learning could be used to identify renewable resources like transformational participation (TP) and
photovoltaic (PV) technology; based on resident motivational strategies, the smart city concept offers a
revolutionary suggestion for supplying power in a metropolitan region. The sustainable development
agenda is introduced at the same time as this approach. Therefore, the article’s goals are to estimate
Mashhad, Iran’s electrical power needs using machine learning technologies and to...

problemas citados acima. Votos de uma boa leitura! Flavio Hourneaux Junior Professor da Faculdade de

Stand-Alone Wind Power Generation using Adaline Based Integrated Electronic Load Controller
by Dipesh Kumar
Wind power is clean, economical and environmentally friendly. It is promising alternative electric power
generation source at the time of unavailability of fossil fuel and reduces concern over the harmful effects
of climate change due to excessive pollution caused by use of fossil fuels. This paper proposes the
adaptive linear element (adaline) algorithm based integrated electronic load controller for an isolated
windturbine-driven power generation. The adaline extracts the fundamental component of load current
to control the voltage and frequency of generator with balancing loads in an integrated manner. The IELC
is realized using zigzag/three single-phase transformers and a six-leg insulated-gate bipolar-transistor-
based current controlled voltage-source converter, a chopper switch, and an auxiliary load on its dc bus.
The generating system is modeled and simulated in MATLAB environment using Simulink and Simpower
System toolboxes. Keywords: Integrated Electronic Load Controller (...

Although the survival rate of patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma has doubled over the last few
decades, due to the introduction of new therapeutic lines and improvement of care, other potential
contributors to the therapeutic response/relapse of disease, such as nutrient intake, along with nutrition
knowledge, have not been assessed during the course of the disease. The purpose of this research was
to assess nutrition knowledge and diet quality in a group of patients with a diagnosis of multiple
myeloma. Anthropometric, clinical and biological assessments and skeletal survey evaluations, along
with the assessment of nutritional intake and general nutrition knowledge, were performed on 61
patients with a current diagnosis of multiple myeloma. A low carbohydrate diet score was computed,
classified in tertiles, and used as a factor in the analysis. Patients in tertiles indicative of high
carbohydrate or low carbohydrate intake showed significant alteration of clinical parameters,...

Audiovisual translation into English is recently gaining importance as the material produced in other
languages is now increasingly crossing borders thanks to the internet. This article explores foul language,
deemed one of the most problematic aspects of subtitling. The aim is to elucidate how this is normally
subtitled into English. Drawing on a corpus of swearwords from Netflix Spanish comedy series El Vecino
(Vigalondo, 2019‒2021), this paper examines the frequency of use of different translation techniques
and the reasons behind the omission of certain instances of foul language. Results show that, while
omitting swearwords is the second most common scenario, the most frequent one is transferring the
offensive load of the original expression, with roughly 70 % of instances making it into the target
product. As for factors influencing this decision, it was observed that overall swearwords are omitted not
because they are offensive, but primarily because of their low narrative va...

Spectral Imaging and Clay Detection in Latgale Lakes
by Sergejs Kodors
The survey of lake sediments is complex, time consuming and costly process with risks to human health.
Additionally, manually obtained sediment samples provide incomplete data about a survey region. In
turn, remote sensing methods are cost-effective and can provide continuous data about a survey region.
Therefore, authors decided to perform a pilot experiment with a remote sensing method in order to
detect clay sediments deposited in lakebeds. The evaluated method is the analysis of spectral images of
Sentinel-2. Pearson coefficient and C4.5 datamining methods were applied for data analysis. Survey
objects are Latgale lakes with and without clay sediments. The pilot experiment showed, that spectral
imaging of lake water is not applicable method to detect definitely clay sediments in lakes, however,
research results provide ideas about indirect methods, which must be studied in the future.

The rural area is a basic component from a socio-economic point of view, being closely linked to the
activities that take place in these areas. Normally, Romanian rural localities should show significant
differences from one development region to another, being influenced by a number of factors
(geographical positioning, the influence of agriculture in the economy, etc.). In this sense, data were
collected from the town halls of the localities from Calarasi and Timis counties. The analyzed data were
processed by the linear regression method, and the estimation of the evolution of the population was
determined using the Vensim simulation program. The paper identifies a pattern in rural localities in
Romania that hinders their development, reflected by various socio-economic indicators available in the
analyzed localities. The main factor that can change this pattern in rural localities is the influence of local
and national decision-makers, who can encourage investment in these areas...

During the last 10–20 years, a great deal of new ideas have been proposed to improve the accuracy of
speech emotion recognition: e.g., effective feature sets, complex classification schemes, and multi-modal
data acquisition. Nevertheless, speech emotion recognition is still the task in limited success.
Considering the nonlinear and fluctuating nature of the emotional speech, in this paper, we present
fractal dimension-based features for speech emotion classification. We employed Katz, Castiglioni,
Higuchi, and Hurst exponent-based features and their statistical functionals to establish the 224-
dimensional full feature set. The dimension was downsized by applying the Sequential Forward Selection
technique. The results of experimental study show a clear superiority of fractal dimension-based feature
sets against the acoustic ones. The average accuracy of 96.5% was obtained using the reduced feature
sets. The feature selection enabled us to obtain the 4-dimensional and 8-dimensional se...

ETC-1002 is a new investigational low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)-lowering agent (Esperion
Therapeutics, Inc.). ETC-1002 is a dicarboxylic acid derivative with a novel mechanism of action targeting
two hepatic enzymes--adenosine triphosphate-citrate lyase (ACL) and adenosine monophosphate-
activated protein kinase (AMPK), inhibiting sterol and fatty acid synthesis and promoting mitochondrial
long-chain fatty acid oxidation. This agent is currently in phase II clinical research. Available data report
that ETC-1002 significantly decreased LDL-C levels (up to 32%) in both patients with normal and elevated
baseline levels of triglycerides. Such beneficial effect is superior to currently approved non-statin lipid
lowering agents. The levels of apolipoprotein B (apoB) and non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-

Statin therapy is generally well tolerated and very effective in the prevention and treatment of
cardiovascular disease, regardless of cholesterol levels; however, it can be associated with various
adverse events (myalgia, myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, and diabetes mellitus, among others). Patients
frequently discontinue statin therapy without medical advice because of perceived side effects and
consequently increase their risk for cardiovascular events. In patients with statin intolerance, it may be
advisable to change the dose, switch to a different statin, or try an alternate-day regimen. If intolerance
is associated with all statins-even at the lowest dose-non-statin drugs and certain nutraceuticals can be

Food supplementation with Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) has been associated with a significant reduction in
total cholesterol, body fat, hyperglycemia and blood pressure. Since OFI may also have antioxidant and
anti-atherogenic properties, we hypothesized that its supplementation might reduce atherogenic
lipoproteins, including small, dense low-density lipoproteins (sdLDL). Forty-nine patients (13 men and 36
women, mean age: 56 ± 5 years) with one or two criteria for the metabolic syndrome weekly consumed
500 g of pasta supplemented with 3% OFI extract (30% of insoluble polysaccharides with high
antioxidant power) for 1 month. The full LDL subclass profile was assessed by gel electrophoresis
(Lipoprint, Quantimetrix, Redondo Beach, CA, USA). After 1 month of pasta supplementation, waist

professionals (MHP) are scarce. This study aimed to assess the across 52 countries. Surveys were
distributed via colleagues and professional societies. Data were collected regarding self-reported general
nutrition knowledge, nutrition education, learning opportunities, and the tendency to recommend food
supplements or prescribe specific diets in clinical practice. In total, 1056 subjects participated in the
study: 354 psychiatrists, 511 psychologists, 44 psychotherapists, and 147 MHPs in-training. All
participants believed the diet quality of individuals with mental disorders was poorer compared to the
general population (p < 0.001). The majority of the psychiatrists (74.2%) and psychologists (66.3%)
reported having no training in nutrition. Nevertheless, many of them used nutri...

Introduction of the circular economy within developing regions: A comparative analysis of advantages
and opportunities for waste valorization
by Elena Rada
The introduction of effective solid waste management strategies in developing countries should be
considered for improving sustainability at global level. Many barriers should be overcome, concerning
the introduction of environmental policies, effective investments, social inclusion and public awareness,
which are significant issues in low-middle income countries. The Circular Economy could represent the
answer for improving current solid waste management activities worldwide, since denote the principle
of waste valorization and recycling for boosting developing economies. This paper is focused on this
theme, analyzing main opportunities for improving the current state of solid waste management in
developing big cities. The solid waste management of two countries are reviewed: Romania is the
emerging country where Circular Economy is becoming a future objective due to economic aids and
strength regulations which the European Union (EU) established for the nations forming parts the a...

The Effects of Physical Activity, Exercise, and Sports Programs on Depressive Symptoms in Individuals
with Disabilities: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis
by Roberta Frontini
Studies show that physical activity, exercise, or sport reduces depressive symptoms in the general
population. However, little is known about its effects on individuals with disabilities. Thus, this systematic
review with meta-analysis aims to verify the effects of this practice on depressive symptoms in
individuals with disabilities. The Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, and SportDiscus databases were used,
with several descriptors and Boolean operators. A total of 1509 studies were identified through
searching the databases. Studies that met the eligibility criteria were subsequently assessed for their
methodological quality (Downs and Black scale), and a meta-analysis was performed. The Z-values that
were obtained to test the null hypothesis, which states that there is no difference in means, showed Z =
−2.294 and a corresponding p-value = 0.022. We can, therefore, reject the null hypothesis in the sense
that exercise seems to reduce depressive symptoms in individuals with disabili...

Artificial Intelligence Chatbots: A Survey of Classical versus Deep Machine Learning Techniques Machine
Learning Techniques
by Bayan A H M A D Alazzam
Artificial Intelligence (AI) enables machines to be intelligent, most importantly using Machine Learning
(ML) in which machines are trained to be able to make better decisions and predictions. In particular,
ML-based chatbot systems have been developed to simulate chats with people using Natural Language
Processing (NLP) techniques. The adoption of chatbots has increased rapidly in many sectors, including,
Education, Health Care, Cultural Heritage, Supporting Systems and Marketing, and Entertainment.
Chatbots have the potential to improve human interaction with machines, and NLP helps them
understand human language more clearly and thus create proper and intelligent responses. In addition
to classical ML techniques, Deep Learning (DL) has attracted many researchers to develop chatbots using
more sophisticated and accurate techniques. However, research has paid chatbots have widely been
developed for English, there is relatively less research on Arabic, which is mainly due to its complexity
and lack of proper corpora compared to English. Though there have been several survey studies that
reviewed the state-of-the-art of chatbot systems, these studies (a) did not give a comprehensive
overview of how different the techniques used for Arabic chatbots in comparison with English chatbots;
and (b) paid little attention to the application of ANN for developing chatbots. Therefore, in this paper,
we conduct a literature survey of chatbot studies to highlight differences between (1) classical and deep
ML techniques for chatbots; and (2) techniques employed for Arabic chatbots versus those for other
languages. To this end, we propose various comparison criteria of the techniques, extract data from
collected studies accordingly, and provide insights on the progress of chatbot development for Arabic
and what still needs to be done in the future.

The Primitive Gastric Lymphoma represents the extra-ganglionic non-Hodgkin lymphoma most
frequently and comprises a large spectrum, ranging from the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)
lymphoma to aggressive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The Primitive Gastric Lymphoma is a rare tumor,
with an occurrence ranging from 4% to 20% of non-Hodgkin lymphomas and approximatively 5% of
primary gastric neoplasms. The chronic gastritis secondary to the infection with Helicobacter pylori was
considered a major predisposing factor for MALT lymphoma. The clinical evolution and the prognosis of
this disease depend on the subtype and histopathological stage at the moment of the diagnosis. Due to
its rarity, many aspects of this neoplasm remain still controversial.

The present article contains a thorough analysis of the medieval rural world of the Eastern Carpathian
area. Such an article meets the necessity of an enlarged database, as it takes into consideration
information provided by foreign travelers, by chroniclers and chronographers, as well as by simple clerks,
scribes and copyists. By corroborating disparate and often anachronistic or confusing data, the author
points out agrarian aspects, directions and methods used by local medieval communities of Moldavia.
Special aspects of interest are the evolution of agricultural technologies and of specific implements, the
development of work relationships (in both craftsmanship and commerce) and of social-legal
regulations, etc. The historical background, as determined by the political and military context of the
epoch, became a decisive factor for state individualization in the area between the Carpathians and the
Nistru (Dniester). The repeated invasions, the conflicts with nomadic population...

Interplay between Lignans and Gut Microbiota: Nutritional, Functional and Methodological Aspects
by Amedeo Amedei
Lignans are non-flavonoid polyphenols present in a wide range of foods frequently consumed in the
Western world, such as seeds, vegetables and fruits, and beverages such as coffee, tea and wine. In
particular, the human gut microbiota (GM) can convert dietary lignans into biologically active
compounds, especially enterolignans (i.e., enterolactone and enterodiol), which play anti-inflammatory
and anti-oxidant roles, act as estrogen receptor activators and modulate gene expression and/or enzyme
activity. Interestingly, recent evidence documenting those dietary interventions involving foods enriched
in lignans have shown beneficial and protective effects on various human pathologies, including
colorectal and breast cancer and cardiovascular diseases. However, considering that more factors (e.g.,
diet, food transit time and intestinal redox state) can modulate the lignans bioactivation by GM, there
are usually remarkable inter-individual differences in urine, fecal and blood concentrat...

The Effects of Flaxseed on Weight Loss in Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome: a Randomized
Controlled Trial
by azadeh najarzadeh
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of flaxseed consumption in improving
weight loss and altering anthropometric indices in overweight and obese women with polycystic ovary
syndrome (PCOS). Our hypothesis was that the high fiber and α-linolenic (ALA) contents of flaxseed
would decrease weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and fat mass, so it would improve
PCOS. Materials and Methods: Sixty eight patients between the ages of 20 and 40 years participated in
this double-blinded, randomized placebo-controlled study. Subjects were randomly assigned to flaxseed
and placebo groups to use 15 grams of flaxseed or placebo daily for 12 weeks. Sixty two participants
completed anthropometric measurements before and after study. Results: The results showed that
weight, BMI, waist circumference, visceral fat percentage and body fat percentage were significantly
decreased and body muscle percentage was significantly increased in both groups. In addition ...

The paper presents the morphological, structural and compositional properties of the sonochemically
prepared ZnO-1.4wt% Graphene (Z-G) nanocomposites as a function of pH value of suspension varying
from 8.5 to 14 and thermal annealing at 450°C in nitrogen or air ambient. The SEM analysis of the Z-G
hybrids dried at 150°C in air has shown a nano-flower like nanostructure for a pH value of 14. The XRD
analysis of dried Z-G hybrids revealed a crystallite size increase from 3.5 nm to 18.4 nm with pH increase,
and this result was explained in terms of colloids zeta potential evolution with pH value. The Raman and
EDS spectroscopy have shown a split of the G band (1575 cm−1) of graphene into two bands (1575
cm−1and 1605 cm−1), an increased height of D (1323 cm−1) band, and an additional amount of carbon
due to CO2absorption from the air, respectively. The carbon incorporation increased with the decrease
of pH, and was associated with a hydrozincite phase, Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6. The formation of ...

Effects of Quercetin on Blood Pressure: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized
Controlled Trials
by ali ahmed
Quercetin, the most abundant dietary flavonol, has antioxidant effects in cardiovascular disease, but the
evidence regarding its effects on blood pressure (BP) has not been conclusive. We assessed the impact of
quercetin on BP through a systematic review and meta-analysis of available randomized controlled trials.
We searched PUBMED, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and EMBASE up to January 31, 2015 to identify
placebo-controlled randomized controlled trials investigating the effect of quercetin on BP. Meta-analysis
was performed using either a fixed-effects or random-effect model according to I(2) statistic. Effect size
was expressed as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% CI. Overall, the impact of quercetin on BP
was reported in 7 trials comprising 9 treatment arms (587 patients). The results of the meta-analysis
showed significant reductions both in systolic BP (WMD: -3.04 mm Hg, 95% CI: -5.75, -0.33, P=0.028) and
diastolic BP (WMD: -2.63 mm Hg, 95% CI: -3.26, -2.01, P<0.001) foll...

Aligning Software Engineering Teaching Strategies and Practices with Industrial Needs
by Jose Metrolho
Several approaches have been proposed to reduce the gap between software engineering education and
the needs and practices of the software industry. Many of them aim to promote a more active learning
attitude in students and provide them with more realistic experiences, thus recreating industry software
development environments and collaborative development and, in some cases, with the involvement of
companies mainly acting as potential customers. Since many degree courses typically offer separate
subjects to teach requirements engineering, analysis and design, coding, or validation, the integration of
all these phases normally necessitates experience in a project context and is usually carried out in a final
year project. The approach described in this article benefits from the close involvement of a software
house company which goes beyond the common involvement of a potential customer. Students are
integrated into distributed teams comprising students, teachers and IT professiona...

HEALING POTENCY OF HAEMATOCOCCUS PLUVIALIS EXTRACT FOR TREATING TYPE 2 DIABETES IN RATS
Original Article
Objective: The present study aims to evaluate the antidiabetic effect of ethanolic extract of
Haematococcus pluvialis (H. pluvialis) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Methods: The
antidiabetic activity of H. pluvialis was investigated by the determination of glucose and insulin levels,
aspartate (AST), alanine transaminases (ALT), lipid profile including total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides
(TG), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-densitylipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C).
Histopathological examination of pancreas and liver were also carried out. Results: The results revealed
that the levels of glucose, TC, TG, LDL-C as well as AST and ALT enzyme activities were increased
significantly in diabetic rats. While, insulin and HDL-C levels decreased significantly in STZ-induced
diabetic rats. The remediation of diabetic rats with H. pluvialis attenuated the elevated levels of glucose,
TC, TG, LDL-C as well as AST and ALT activities in diabetic rats. Besides, it improved insulin, HDL-C levels,
pancreas and hepatic architectures. Conclusion: H. pluvialis extract has a promising antidiabetic potency
through attenuation of several metabolic disorders associated diabetes.

Many cultivated and wild plants are used for the management of various diseases, specifically renal and
hepatic diseases and those of the immune and cardiovascular systems. In China, medicinal plants from
ancient to modern history have been used in patients with angina pectoris, congestive heart failure
(CHF), systolic hypertension, arrhythmia, and venous insufficiency for centuries. The latest increase in
the fame of natural products and alternative medicine has revived interest in conventional remedies that
have been consumed in the management of CVD. The cardio-protective properties of the various herbs
are possibly due to their anti-oxidative, antihypercholesterolemic, anti-ischemic activities, and inhibition
of platelet aggregation that reduce the risk of CVD. Ethno-pharmacological and biological properties of
these plants are explored, based upon published scientific literature. Although a majority of medicinal

Zdravila iz skupine statinov so v zadnjih več kot 20 letih ena najpogosteje predpisovanih zdravil. Poleg
znižanja koncentracije holesterola LDL namreč zelo pomembno znižajo srčnožilno obolevnost in
umrljivost. Statini kompetitivno zavirajo aktivno mesto reduktaze HMG-CoA prvega in ključnega hitrost

najverjetneje odgovoren tudi za večino stranskih učinkov, čeprav za to ni zanesljivih dokazov.
Najpogostejši stranski učinki, ki so tudi vzrok za prekinitev zdravljenja, so povezani z mišičnimi

Drugi stranski učinki so še novo nastala sladkorna bolezen tipa 2, hepatotoksičnost, hemoragična

This paper aims at analysing the role of the intuitive knowledge in Fink's phenomenology, comparing two
different aspects: on the one hand, the intuition as overriding access to the primigenial
phenomenological-ontological ground; on the other hand, the intuitive life of the natural attitude as
ingenuous form of conceptualization, in which the obvious steers the focus on the worldly perception.
Within this ambiguity, Fink's perspective vouches for a transcendental circuit that proceeds from the
took-for-granted life towards a self-conscious movement, reaching an (enlightened) obscure fundament,
which is the most intuitive and spontaneous symbolon. Starting from his early production-especially
thematising the "specular result" of the VI Cartesian Meditation-this research overlooks the latest Fink's
Nietzschean-Presocratic motif, in which the intuition appears as the transcendental possibility of an
immediate grab on the arché: in this and by this the very human perception is pre-oriented, dismissing
logical and conceptual attempts of explanation. After several grades of Enthüllung, this fundament
shows itself as the shadiest as much as ambiguous totality, that only the dynamic of a cosmological play
can properly interface with.
mondo, come orizzonte atematico.

COVID-19 has significantly impacted the whole world, and Romania was no exception. Biomarkers play a
crucial role in understanding and managing the disease. However, research regarding laboratory analyses
for patients with COVID-19 is fairly limited. For detection, PCR testing is still considered the golden
standard, while antibodies are still useful for monitoring both patients and their vaccination status. In
our country, biomarkers such as CRP, LDH, transaminases, cardiac, and iron markers have been used to
assess the status of patients and even predict illness outcome. CRP, IL-6, LDH, FER, fibrinogen, creatinine,
and vitamin D levels have been associated with increased severity, risk of ICU admission, and death.
Cardiac markers and D-dimers are also good predictors, but their role seems more important in patients
with complications. HDL cholesterol and BUN levels were also suggested as potential biomarkers.

the cetylpyridinium surfactant on a Moroccan Na-Montmorillonite-type clay surface have been
investigated. The adsorption rate of cetylpyridinium reached 2 CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity) and the
maximum amount of adsorption increases for co-ion Br - more than Cl - . These results have been proven
and we can conclude that the amount of adsorption varies according to the surfactant critical micelle
concentration (CMC). The simulation shows the arrangement of the cationic surfactant’s ions adsorbed
on the basal surface. Where the cetylpyridinium are organized in two layers in a bimolecular and
paraffinic manner. The binding coefficients for the formation of neutral complexes of either cationic
surfactant’s ions and the clay are calculated by a theoretical model and the binding...

The transportation problem, as a particular case of a linear programme, has probably the highest relative
frequency with which appears in applications. At least in its classical formulation, it involves demands
and supplies. When, for practical reasons, the total demand cannot satisfy the total supply, the problem
becomes unbalanced and inconsistent, and must be reformulated as e.g. finding a least squares solution
of an inconsistent system of linear inequalities. A general iterative solver for this class of problems has
been proposed by S. P. Han in his 1980 original paper. The drawback of Han’s algorithm consists in the
fact that it uses in each iteration the computation of the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse numerical
solution of a subsystem of the initial one, which for bigger dimensions can cause serious computational
troubles. In order to overcome these difficulties we propose in this paper a general projection-based
minimal norm solution approximant to be used within Han-type alg...

Low-Calorie Diet: A Randomized Placebo Controlled Trial
by mitra zarrati
Background and Aims. Improved vitamin D levels can have a favorable effect on some metabolic
variables. The objective of the current study was to determine the effects of vitamin D supplementation
during a weight-loss intervention on the levels of omentin-1, spexin, lipid profiles, and inflammatory
factors in obese and overweight participants. Methods and Materials. In this double-blind placebo-
controlled randomized clinical trial, 70 overweight and obese participants with vitamin D deficiency
(25(OH)D ≤ 20 nmol/L) were assigned into the intervention (a daily dose of 2,000 IU vitamin D + low-
calorie diet) and placebo (placebo + low-calorie diet) groups for 8 weeks. Anthropometric parameters,
serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D), lipid profiles, omentin-1 and spexin levels, high-
sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1)
concentrations were assessed before and after the intervention. Results. Vitamin D supplementation af...

Enhancing the Dependability of Heterogeneous Distributed Systems by Governing their Message Flow
by Naftaly Minsky
This paper introduces an architecture of distributed systems that facilitates the implementation of
dependable, mostly non-functional, system properties, i.e., properties that span an entire system, or a
set of components dispersed throughout it. This architecture, called GDS, for governed distribute system,
is based on a middleware that governs the flow of messages in a system, while being oblivious of the
internals of the components that send and receive such messages. This middleware is stateful, thus
sensitive to the history of interaction; and it is decentralized, and thus scalable. The GDS architecture can
help in establishing the overall structure of a system; and can have a significant impact on important
non-functional qualities of it, such as the following: (a) establishing regularities over the system,
rendering it more coherent, and easier to reason about; (b) providing for a degree of trust among the
disparate actor of the system; and (c) enhancing the security and faul...

Detailed characterisation of natural sepiolite from the Eskisehir region of Turkey was performed using X‐
ray diffraction, X‐ray fluorescence, field emission scanning electron microscopy, specific surface area (BET
method), Fourier transform infrared spectra, derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal
analysis. Electrokinetic properties of natural‐ and acid‐activated sepiolites were investigated as a
function of the concentration of various electrolytes, such as NaCl, KCl, LiCl, CaCl2, MgCl2, NaNO3,
Na2CO3, FeCl3 and Al(NO3)3. While mono and divalent cations and anions did not change the surface
charge of natural‐ and acid‐activated sepiolite, trivalent cations changed the surface charge from
negative to positive. Acid‐activated sepiolite samples shifted towards the positive region in nearly all
electrolyte solutions when compared with the natural sepiolite. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical

Resveratrol is a polyphenol that has been shown to possess many applications in different fields of
medicine. This systematic review has drawn attention to the axis between resveratrol and human
microbiota, which plays a key role in maintaining an adequate immune response that can lead to
different diseases when compromised. Resveratrol can also be an asset in new technologies, such as
gene therapy. PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched to
find papers that matched our topic dating from 1 January 2017 up to 18 January 2022, with English-
language restriction using the following Boolean keywords: (“resveratrol” AND “microbio*”). Eighteen
studies were included as relevant papers matching the purpose of our investigation. Immune response,
prevention of thrombotic complications, microbiota, gene therapy, and bone regeneration were
retrieved as the main topics. The analyzed studies mostly involved resveratrol supplementation and its

In recent years several efforts have being made in bringing smart network connectivity to the Renewable
Energy Plant (REP) environment. On the other hand, REP is extending in scale from specialized points
where the energy provider acts as a supplier to home REP (self-energy producers). This enables new
important features such as: process automation, monitoring, control and optimizations. On the other
hand, and in particular during and after the Covid19 pandemics the cybersecurity menace is a massive
concern. The digital literacy of a worker of such an infrastructure is relevant to the correct
implementation of adequate security policies. This article describes the threats and challenges on the
field and conducts an enquire for perceiving the awareness of Automation and Mechanics Engineering
students for this relevant problem, as future player in the field.

Comparative ability of EDTA, GLDA, and MGDA to desorb Pb from contaminated montmorillonite: Aging
effects
by Mehran Shirvani
Study of Pb desorption processes from clay minerals by chelating ligands is crucial to better understand
the fate and transport of Pb in soil and sediment environments. In this study, Pb desorption from a Pb-
loaded montmorillonite (MMT) was studied as affected by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and
its two alternative eco-friendly chelating agents, i.e., methylglycine diacetic acid (MGDA) and glutamic-
N,N-diacetic acid (GLDA) at two concentrations of 0.25 and 1.0 mM. The impacts of a 30-day residence
time on the rate and quantity of Pb desorption were also evaluated. The result showed that Pb
desorption kinetics was biphasic with an initial rapid phase, lasting for about 3 h, followed by a slow
phase, lasting to 12 h. The degree of Pb desorption from Ca-MMT was proven to be governed by the
nature and concentration of the chelating ligands presented in the systems. The capacity of the ligands
to desorb Pb from Ca-MMT was in the order EDTA > > MGDA > GLDA, according to...

Stability and Removal of Several Statins from Wastewater Using Different Treatment Technologies
by Saleh Sulaiman
Atorvastatin (ATO), Rosuvastatin (RST) and Simvastatin (SIM) are commonly used drugs that belong to
the statin family (lowering human blood cholesterol levels) and have been detected as contaminants in
natural waters. Stability and removal of statins from wastewater produced at Al-Quds University Campus
were investigated. Kinetic studies in pure water (abiotic degradation), in sludge (biodegradability) and in
Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) at room temperature were investigated. Heterogeneous
photocatalysis using the semi- conductor titanium dioxide (TiO2) has proven to be a promising treatment
technology for water purification. The degradation reactions of the three drugs in wastewater at room
temperature follow first order kinetics with rate constants of 2.2 x 10-7 s -1 (ATO), 1.8 x 10-7 s -1 (RST)
and 1.8 x 10-6 s -1 (SIM), which are larger than those obtained in pure water under the same conditions,

Pyrimethanil (2-aniline-4, 6-dimethylpyrimidine, PRM) is used in fruit packing plants to control fungal
infections and diseases. The effluents greatly polluted with this fungicide, as a point source
contamination, need to be technologically treated for their regeneration before they reach water bodies.
This work evaluates the use of organo-montmorillonites, synthetized in our laboratory, for their
application in adsorption and coagulation/flocculation processes for the removal of PRM from water. The
adsorption-desorption performance of PRM in a raw montmorillonite (Mt) and several organo-
montmorillonites (organo-Mt) obtained by different amounts and types of exchanged surfactants

Applications of Chemically Modified Clay Minerals and Clays to Water Purification and Slow Release
Formulations of Herbicides
by Tomás Undabeytia
This review deals with modification of montmorillonite and other clay-minerals and clays by interacting
them with organic cations, for producing slow release formulations of herbicides, and efficient removal
of pollutants from water by filtration. Elaboration is on incorporating initially the organic cations in
micelles and liposomes, then producing complexes denoted micelle- or liposome-clay nano-particles.
The material characteristics (XRD, Freeze-fracture electron microscopy, adsorption) of the micelle– or
liposome–clay complexes are different from those of a complex of the same composition (organo-clay),
which is formed by interaction of monomers of the surfactant with the clay-mineral, or clay. The
resulting complexes have a large surface area per weight; they include large hydrophobic parts and (in
many cases) have excess of a positive charge. The organo-clays formed by preadsorbing organic cations
with long alkyl chains were also addressed for adsorption and slow release of h...

Modified Compositions of Micelle–Clay and Liposome–Clay Composites for Optimal Removal from Water
of Bacteria and Hydrophobic Neutral Chemicals
by Tomás Undabeytia
The efficiency in water treatment by granulated complexes formed from the clay bentonite with (i)
micelles of the cations of octadecyltrimethyl-ammonium (ODTMA) or (ii) liposomes of
didodecyldimethyl-ammonium (DDAB) was investigated. The bentonite–ODTMA complexes were
synthesized in three variations: I. mass ratio of 68/32, which resulted in an excess of positive charge of
half of the clay cation exchange capacity and is denoted “ordinary”; II. complexes having higher loads of
ODTMA, denoted “enriched”; and III. “neutral”. These variations were designed to optimize the efficiency
and reduce the costs of water treatment. “Ordinary” and “neutral” complexes of DDAB were also
synthesized. The “ordinary” complex of ODTMA was shown to be efficient in the removal of
anionic/hydrophobic molecules and bacteria. The “enriched” complexes were more active in removal of
bacteria from water by filtration due to the higher release of free ODTMA cations, which causes
biostatic/biocidal effects. The...

Role of Herbal Teas in Regulating Cellular Homeostasis and Autophagy and Their Implications in
Regulating Overall Health
Tea is one of the most popular and widely consumed beverages worldwide, and possesses numerous
potential health benefits. Herbal teas are well-known to contain an abundance of polyphenol
antioxidants and other ingredients, thereby implicating protection and treatment against various
ailments, and maintaining overall health in humans, although their mechanisms of action have not yet
been fully identified. Autophagy is a conserved mechanism present in organisms that maintains basal
cellular homeostasis and is essential in mediating the pathogenesis of several diseases, including cancer,
type II diabetes, obesity, and Alzheimer’s disease. The increasing prevalence of these diseases, which
could be attributed to the imbalance in the level of autophagy, presents a considerable challenge in the
healthcare industry. Natural medicine stands as an effective, safe, and economical alternative in
balancing autophagy and maintaining homeostasis. Tea is a part of the diet for many people, and it ...

Novel degradable biointerfacing nanocomposite coatings for modulating the osteoblast response
by Maria Dinescu
by Cristiano Capurso
The beneficial effects of a Mediterranean diet are due to the numerous active compounds in the food
and, particularly, the high concentration of compounds with synergistically acting antioxidant properties.
Resveratrol, a stilbenoid nonflavonoid phenol, is an antioxidant that is naturally produced by numerous
plants as a defensive agent in response to attacks from pathogens, such as bacteria and fungi.
Resveratrol has several effects on human health, including on the lipid profile, where it primarily
downregulates the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase, reducing the synthesis of
cholesterol. Resveratrol also increases the expression of LDL receptors in the liver, contributing to the
reduction in the LDL-cholesterol levels. This short narrative review, based on relevant articles written in
English from a PubMed search, using the keywords “resveratrol”, “atherosclerosis”, “cardiovascular
disease”, and “Mediterranean Diet“, focuses on the possible effects of this mo...

Statin-Associated Muscle Symptoms. Position paper from the Luso-Latin American Consortium
by Marcelo Assad
In the last 2 decades, statin therapy has proved to be the most potent isolated therapy for attenuation of
cardiovascular risk. Its frequent use has been appointed as one of the most important elements for the
reduction of the cardiovascular mortality in developed countries. However, the recurrent incidence of
muscle symptoms in statin users raised the possibility of causal association, leading to disease entity
known as statin associated muscle symptoms (SAMS). Mechanistic studies and clinical trials, specifically
designed for the study of SAMS allowed a deeper understanding of the natural history and the accurate
incidence. This set of information becomes essential to avoid an unnecessary risk of severe forms of
SAMS. At the same time, this concrete understanding of SAMS prevents overdiagnosis and an
inadequate suspension of one of the most powerful prevention strategies of our times. In this context,
this Luso-Latin American Consortium gathered all available information on the su...

This research was carried out at Dammam University's Preparatory Year and Supporting Studies
Deanship during the second semester of the academic year 2020-2021. The population included both
genders with different levels of English proficiency (Tables No. 1 and No. 2). A random process was used
to choose the samples. A total of 255 students were selected from a total population of 756. The Sample
Size Calculator (https://www.surveysystem.com/sscalc.htm), a public service of Creative Research
Systems survey software, was used to establish the size of the sample that represents the target
population of students. Students' perceptions of learning and teaching processes via Blackboard
were among the variables used to create the samples. In the preparatory year, 255 students from the
scientific, engineering, and health tracks responded to the survey, out of a total population of 756 at the
95 percent confidence level. Quantitative data was collected using mostly closed questions...

Nanostructured metal oxide semiconductors have been widely investigated and are commonly used in
gas sensing structures. After a brief review which will be focused on chemiresistive oxygen sensing
employing this type of sensing materials, for both room temperature and harsh environment
applications (particularly, at high ambient temperature and high relative humidity levels), paper reports
new results concerning O2detection of a structure using a sensing layer comprising nanostructured
(typical grain size of 50 nm) SrTi0.6Fe0.4O2.8(STFO40), synthesized by sonochemical methods, mixed
with single wall carbon nanotubes. The structure is a Microelectromechanical System (MEMS), based on
a Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI), Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible micro-
hotplate, comprising a tungsten heater which allows an excellent control of the sensing layer working
temperature. Oxygen detection tests were performed in both dry (RH = 0%) and humid (RH = 60%)

Background and Objectives: Despite the vast heterogeneity in the genetic defects causing hemophilia A
(HA), large intron inversions represent a major cause of disease, accounting for almost half of the cases
of severe HA worldwide. We investigated the intron 22 and intron 1 inversion status in a cohort of
Romanian unrelated patients with severe HA. Moreover, we evaluated the role of these inversions as
relative risk factors in inhibitor occurrence. Materials and Methods: Inverse shifting—a polymerase chain
reaction method was used to detect the presence of intron 22 and intron 1 inversions in 156 Romanian
patients with HA. Results: Intron inversion 22 was found in 41.7% of the patients, while intron 1 inversion
was detected in 3.2% of the patients. Overall, large intron inversions represented the molecular defect in
44.9% of the studied patients. Our findings are in accord with previously published reports from Eastern
Europe countries and with other international studies. The risk ...

implemente estrategias dirigidas a fomentar actitudes.

Arterial vascular calcification (VC) represents formation of calcium phosphate deposits on the interior of
arteries, which could restrict blood flow leading to heart health problems, including morbidity and
mortality. VC is a complex and tightly regulated process that involves transformation of vascular smooth
muscle cells (VSMCs) to bone-like cells and subsequent deposition of calcium as hydroxyapatite. Natural
bioactives, including quercetin (Q), curcumin (C), resveratrol (R), and magnesium (Mg), have been
reported to inhibit VC. Thus, we conducted an in vitro study using rat vascular smooth muscle cells
(rVSMCs) to evaluate the protective effect of natural bioactives found in OptiCel, that is, Mg combined
with polyphenols (PPs), Q, C, and R. Calcification was induced by culturing rVSMCs in a high phosphate
(HP) medium. The addition of Mg and Q + C + R separately decreased the HP-induced calcium deposition
by 37.55% and 42.78%, respectively. In contrast, when Mg was combined with ...

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide. Since the establishment of the
“lipid hypothesis”, according to which, cholesterol level is directly correlated to the risk of CVD, many
different lipid-lowering agents have been introduced in clinical practice. A majority of these drugs, in
addition to their lipid-lowering properties, may also exhibit some anti-inflammatory and
immunomodulatory activities. This hypothesis was based on the observation that a decrease in lipid
levels occurs along with a decrease in inflammation. Insufficient reduction in the inflammation during
treatment with lipid-lowering drugs could be one of the explanations for treatment failure and recurrent
CVD events. Thus, the aim of this narrative review was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory properties of
currently available lipid-lowering medications including statins, ezetimibe, bile acid sequestrants (BAS),
proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors, fibrates, o...

Citizen Satisfaction With Mandatory E-Government Services: A Conceptual Framework and an Empirical
Validation
by Abdullah Alkraiji
by Thomas Johnston
The oral route of drug administration is the most common and convenient route for dosing statin drugs,
and, in fact, most medications, because of ease of drug delivery, patient compliance, and cost-
effectiveness. However, the oral administration of statin drugs has disadvantages such as hepatic first-
pass metabolism and degradation within the gastrointestinal tract that limit their overall bioavailability.
This review introduces several diverse non-oral delivery methods for the administration of statins. These
alternative delivery systems and routes of administration are varied and are capable of improving the
bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of statin drugs.

Anti-inflammatory Action of Statins in Cardiovascular Disease: the Role of Inflammasome and Toll-Like
Receptor Pathways
by Thomas Johnston
Atherosclerosis is one type of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in which activation of the NLRP3
inflammasome and toll-like receptor (TLR) pathways is implicated. One of the most effective treatments
for atherosclerosis is the use of statin medications. Recent studies have indicated that statins, in addition
to their lipid-lowering effects, exert inhibitory and/or stimulatory effects on the NLRP3 inflammasome
and TLRs. Some of the statins lead to activation of the inflammasome and subsequently cause secretion
of IL-1β and IL-18. Thus, these actions may further aggravate the disease. On the other hand, some
statins cause inhibition of the inflammasome or TLRs and along with lipid-lowering, help to improve the
disease by reducing inflammation. In this article, we discuss these contradictory studies and the
mechanisms of action of statins on the NLRP3 inflammasome and TLR pathways. The dose-dependent
effects of statins on the NLRP3 complex are related to their chemistry, pharmacokinetic pr...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide in terms of
both its rates of incidence and mortality. Due to serious side effects associated with conventional
chemotherapeutic treatments, many natural products with fewer adverse side effects have been
considered as potential treatment options. In fact, many natural products have widely been used in
various phases of clinical trials for CRC, as well as in in vitro and in vivo preclinical studies. Curcumin
(CUR) and resveratrol (RES) are classified as natural polyphenolic compounds that have been
demonstrated to have anticancer activity against CRC and are associated with minimal side effects. By
regulating select target genes involved in several key signaling pathways in CRC, in particular, the Wnt β-
catenin signaling cascade, the course of CRC may be positively altered. In the current review, we focused
on the therapeutic effects of CUR and RES in CRC as they pertain to modulation of the Wnt...

by Steven Jones
Circulating lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) is a recognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Tibolone, a
synthetic steroid, may lower Lp(a) levels; however, evidence of the effects of tibolone on Lp(a) still
remain to be defined. Therefore, we investigated the effects of tibolone treatment on circulating Lp(a)
levels in postmenopausal women. The search included PUBMED, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google
Scholar (up to January 31st, 2015) to identify controlled clinical studies investigating the effects of oral
tibolone treatment on Lp(a) levels in postmenopausal women. Random-effects meta-regression was
performed using unrestricted maximum likelihood method for the association between calculated
weighted mean difference (WMD) and potential moderators. Meta-analysis of data from 12 trials (16
treatment arms) suggested a significant reduction of Lp(a) levels following tibolone treatment (WMD: -
25.28%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -36.50, -14.06; p < 0.001). This result was ro...

Impact of statin therapy on plasma adiponectin concentrations: A systematic review and meta-analysis of
43 randomized controlled trial arms
by Steven Jones
The effect of statin therapy on plasma adiponectin levels has not been conclusively studied. Therefore,
we aimed to evaluate this effect through a systematic review and meta-analysis of available randomized
controlled trials (RCTs). Quantitative data synthesis was performed using a random-effects model with
weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) as summary statistics. In 30 studies
(43 study arms) with 2953 participants, a significant increase in plasma adiponectin levels was observed
after statin therapy (WMD: 0.57 μg/mL, 95% CI: 0.18, 0.95, p = 0.004). In subgroup analysis, atorvastatin,
simvastatin, rosuvastatin, pravastatin and pitavastatin were found to change plasma adiponectin
concentrations by 0.70 μg/mL (95% CI: -0.26, 1.65), 0.50 μg/mL (95% CI: -0.44, 1.45), -0.70 μg/mL (95%
CI: -1.08, -0.33), 0.62 μg/mL (95% CI: -0.12, 1.35), and 0.51 μg/mL (95% CI: 0.30, 0.72), respectively. With

From Monastic Benevolence to Medical Beneficence: The Inception of Medical Ethics in Wallachia and
Moldavia before the Second Half of the 19th Century
by Octavian Buda
In Middle Ages, in Moldavia and Wallachia, the healthcare system was almost non-existent, medical
practice being the attribute of old women, midwives, charmers, and later monastic personnel. The first
elements of medical ethics are identifiable in written texts from the 17th century, associated with a
process of laicization of medicine and the appearance of the first combined civil and penal codes (Vasile
Lupu’s Law from 1646 and Matei Basarab’s Law from 1652). In the next 150 years, elements of medical
ethics were rarely identified, usually in legal regulations, personal letters, or literary works. Starting with
the end of the 18th century, associated with the emergence of the position of public physician, detailed
regulations regarding the healthcare system associated with an increased number of ethical norms
began to emerge. The purpose of this article is to increase awareness to an international audience about
the history of Romanian medical deontology and the roots of concepts ...

Marginal Adaptation and Internal Fit of 3D-Printed Provisional Crowns and Fixed Dental Prosthesis Resins
Compared to CAD/CAM-Milled and Conventional Provisional Resins: A Systematic Review and Meta-
Analysis
by Mafaz Gharawi
The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the marginal fit and internal adaptation of provisional
crowns and fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) fabricated using 3D-printing resins and compared them with
those fabricated by CAD/CAM (computer-aided designing/computer-aided manufacturing) milling and
conventional resins. The null hypotheses tested were that there would be no differences in the marginal
fit and internal adaptation of 3D-printed provisional crowns and FDP resins when compared to
CAD/CAM-milled and conventional provisional resins. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews
and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to construct this systematic review. The focused
PICO/PECO (Population, Intervention/Exposure, Comparison, Outcome) question was “Do provisional
crowns and FDPs (P) fabricated by 3D-printing (I) have similar marginal adaptation and internal fit (O)
when compared to those fabricated by CAD/CAM milling and conventional techniques (C)?”. The

Alternating copolymers of vinyl butyl ether (VBE) and triethylene glycol methylvinylether (VEO3) with
maleic anhydride were synthesized by solution polymerization. These polymers act as polyethers in
water and the hydrophilic behaviour of maleic anhydride copolymers influence the stabilization of silver
nanoparticles (silver NPs). The interactions between polymeric matrix and inorganic nanofiller decrease
the chains mobility and favour the increase of the thermal stability shown by the TGA measurements.
DLS analyses and SEM images confirms that shape and size of the particles depend on the content of the
alternating copolymer.

Background: The current paradigm is that fibrosis promotes electrophysiological disorders and drives
atrial fibrillation (AF). In this current study, we investigated the relation between the degree of fibrosis in
human atrial tissue samples of controls and patients in various stages of AF and the degree of
electrophysiological abnormalities. Methods: The degree of fibrosis was measured in the atrial tissue
and serum of patients in various stages of AF and the controls. Hereto, picrosirius and H&E staining were
performed to quantify degree of total, endo-perimysial fibrosis, and cardiomyocyte diameter. Western
blot quantified fibrosis markers: neural cell adhesion molecule, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase,
lysyl oxidase, and α-smooth muscle actin. In serum, the ratio carboxyl-terminal telopeptide of
collagen/matrix-metalloproteinase1 was determined. High-resolution epicardial mapping evaluated low-
voltage areas and conduction abnormalities. Results: No significant differences w...

Comparison of The Effect of Breads Containing Milled Sesame or Flaxseed on Blood Pressure of Patient in
Stage I Hypertension
by zohreh mirjalili
Introduction: Flaxseed and sesame both are capable of reducing blood pressure, but no studies have
been done to compare their effects on hypertension. The purpose of this study was to compare the
effect of breads containing either milled sesame or flaxseed on blood pressure of patients with type I
hypertension. Methods: This was a randomized, single blind clinical trial study. Demographic information
was obtained from 100 eligible patients and they were randomly allocated to flaxseed or sesame groups.
They received breads containing 30 g of either flaxseed or sesame for 14 weeks. Blood pressure,
abdominal circumference, and BMI (body mass index) were measured at the beginning, seventh week,
and at the end of study. Questionnaires regarding their eating habits and physical activities were also
completed at these times. Data was analyzes by SPSS version 16 and independent sample t test and
repeated measurement test. Results: Both sesame and flaxseed significantly reduced systolic and ...

Diversity of prion strains was attributed to an elusive nucleic acid, yet a search spanning nearly two
decades has failed to identify a prion-specific polynucleotide. In our search for a prion-specific nucleic
acid, we analyzed nucleic acids in purified fractions from the brains of Syrian hamsters infected with
Sc237 prions. Purification of Sc237 prions removed nucleic acids larger than 50 nucleotides as measured
by return refocusing electrophoresis (RRGE). To determine the size of the largest polynucleotide present
in purified fractions at an abundance of one molecule per infectious (ID 50 ) unit, we measured prions
present after inoculation. In order to account for the rapid clearance of prions after intracerebral
inoculation, we determined the number of PrP Sc molecules and ID 50 units of prions that were retained
in brain. Factoring in clearance after inoculation, we estimate that the largest polynucleotide present in
our purified fractions at one molecule per ID 50 unit is ≈25 ...

The reception of phenomenology in Argentina by Eugenio Pucciarelli. His ideal of a militant and humanist
philosophy underpinned by a pluralistic conception of reason and time
by Irene Breuer
This paper focuses on the Argentine philosopher Eugenio Pucciarelli (1907-1995) and his criti-cal
reception of phenomenology. It introduces to his contribution to phenomenology in the con-text of its
early reception in Argentina and addresses the following issues: 1) the mission of phi-losophy, the
various ways of accessing its essence, in particular those of Scheler, Dilthey and Husserl, 3) his reception
of Husserl as far as the ideals of science and reason are concerned, 4) the crisis of reason 3) his pluralistic
conception of reason and time, and finally, to 4) his human-istic stance. The thesis argues that his
conception of philosophy, which emphasizes the personal dimension and the social commitment of
philosophical practice as well as the relentless search for unshakeable foundations of knowledge as
carried out by Husserl, is underpinned by a plu-ralistic conception of reason, time and culture that
confers Pucciarelli’s philosophizing a human-istic bias. Phenomenology as conceived by Pucciarelli
becomes thus an active force by embrac-ing multiple perspectives, such that its methodology can be
applied to varying contexts and cir-cumstances. Pucciarelli’s commitment to social justice and Latin
American culture responds to the attempt to rescue the virtues and freedom of the individual, which
ground human dignity. In short, Pucciarelli’s stance reveals a profound pluralistic humanism that does
not neglect its mili-tant and critical function, thus evidencing its relevance to the current sociopolitical
situation in Latin America.

Combined Supplementation of Coenzyme Q10 and Other Nutrients in Specific Medical Conditions
by Massimiliano Peana
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a compound with a crucial role in mitochondrial bioenergetics and membrane
antioxidant protection. Despite the ubiquitous endogenous biosynthesis, specific medical conditions are
associated with low circulating CoQ10 levels. However, previous studies of oral CoQ10 supplementation
yielded inconsistent outcomes. In this article, we reviewed previous CoQ10 trials, either single or in
combination with other nutrients, and stratified the study participants according to their metabolic
statuses and medical conditions. The CoQ10 supplementation trials in elders reported many favorable
outcomes. However, the single intervention was less promising when the host metabolic statuses were
worsening with the likelihood of multiple nutrient insufficiencies, as in patients with an established
diagnosis of metabolic or immune-related disorders. On the contrary, the mixed CoQ10 supplementation
with other interacting nutrients created more promising impacts in hosts with compro...

Comparison of the effects of fibrates versus statins on plasma lipoprotein(a) concentrations: a systematic
review and meta-analysis of head-to-head randomized controlled trials
by Luís Simental-mendía
Raised plasma lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) concentration is an independent and causal risk factor for
atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Several types of pharmacological approaches are under
evaluation for their potential to reduce plasma Lp(a) levels. There is suggestive evidence that statins and
fibrates, two frequently employed lipid-lowering drugs, can lower plasma Lp(a). The present study aims
to compare the efficacy of fibrates and statins in reducing plasma concentrations of Lp(a) using a meta-
analysis of randomized head-to-head trials. Medline and Scopus databases were searched to identify
randomized head-to-head comparative trials investigating the efficacy of fibrates versus statins in
reducing plasma Lp(a) levels. Meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model, with inverse
variance weighted mean differences (WMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) as summary statistics.
The impact of putative confounders on the estimated effect size was explored using random ef...

and Meta-Analysis of Interventional Studies
by Luís Simental-mendía
Aim. To evaluate by meta-analysis of interventional studies the effect of statin therapy on arterial wall
inflammation. Background. Arterial exposure to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels is
responsible for initiation and progression of atherosclerosis and arterial wall inflammation. 18F-
fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) has been
used to detect arterial wall inflammation and monitor the vascular anti-inflammatory effects of lipid-
lowering therapy. Despite a number of statin-based interventional studies exploring 18F-FDG uptake,
these trials have produced inconsistent results. Methods. Trials with at least one statin treatment arm
were searched in PubMed-Medline, SCOPUS, ISI Web of Knowledge, and Google Scholar databases.
Target-to-background ratio (TBR), an indicator of blood-corrected 18F-FDG uptake, was used as the

Online learning during the pandemic of COVID-19: Experiences of students and universities
by Ilija Savić
The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant influence on university education and organization of lecturing.
Most universities throughout the world had not been prepared for the new circumstances, and this
ultimately affected both the organization and the quality of lectures. Universities were obliged to follow
trends and implement new strategies in lecturing in order to support their students where help was
most required, and furthermore, in order to maintain the quality of their experiences and education. The
objective of this research was to gain insight into how students reacted to the new pandemic situation
and whether they are satisfied with online teaching so that universities could use the results to adapt
and conduct online teaching in the future. The research found that students considered online learning
had affected their efficiency, productivity, and level of motivation in the process of learning. Apart from
these adversities regarding online teaching and learning, the surv...

Resveratrol is a phenolic phytoconstituent found in many plants. This molecule has always caught the
attention of scientists because of biological potentials such as inhibition of inflammation, oxidative stress
and platelet aggregation as well as to prevent/protect against cardiovascular and neurodegenerative
disease/disorders. Literature search have been conducted over resveratrol in covid-19 and asthma
studies published in Pubmed and Google Scholars until 30 September 2020. The criteria used in the
literature review were determined and were reviewed works on resveratrol including 368 articles and 47
articles on covid-19 and asthma, respectively. As a result of meta-analysis, TNF-α values of the studies
showed a significant difference (heterogeneity) of I2=68.39% from each other in total (Cohran Q:6.33,
p<0.0423). This study shows that resveratrol would have a potential to reduce ARDS symptoms, by
suppressing the cytokine storm and severe inflammation caused by SARS-CoV-2, and b...

A Distinct Hibiscus sabdariffa Extract Prevents Iron Neurotoxicity, a Driver of Multiple Sclerosis Pathology
by Chang-chun Ling
Iron deposition in the brain begins early in multiple sclerosis (MS) and continues unabated. Ferrous iron
is toxic to neurons, yet the therapies used in MS do not counter iron neurotoxicity. Extracts of Hibiscus
sabdariffa (HS) are used in many cultures for medicinal purposes. We collected a distinct HS extract and
found that it abolished the killing of neurons by iron in culture; medications used in MS were ineffective
when similarly tested. Neuroprotection by HS was not due to iron chelation or anthocyanin content. In
free radical scavenging assays, HS was equipotent to alpha lipoic acid, an anti-oxidant being tested in MS.
However, alpha lipoic acid was only modestly protective against iron-mediated killing. Moreover, a
subfraction of HS without radical scavenging activity negated iron toxicity, whereas a commercial
hibiscus preparation with anti-oxidant activity could not. The idea that HS might have altered properties
within neurons to confer neuroprotection is supported by its...

Adverse cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes, such as sudden cardiac death, acute myocardial
infarction, and stroke, are often catastrophic. Statins are frequently used to attenuate the risk of CVD-
associated morbidity and mortality through their impact on lipids and they may also have anti-
inflammatory and other plaque-stabilization effects via different signaling pathways. Different statins,
including atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, pravastatin, pitavastatin, and simvastatin, are administered to
manage circulatory lipid levels. In addition, statins are potent inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl
coenzyme A (HMGCoA) reductase via modulating sirtuins (SIRTs). During the last two decades, SIRTs have

Despite the significant advances achieved in pediatric acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) treatment,
adverse side effects of drugs remain a challenging issue. Numerous ALL pharmacogenomic studies have
been conducted to elucidate the predisposing genetic factors for their development. Plausible
pharmacogenomic data are available for the osteonecrosis associated with glucocorticoids, the
neurotoxicity associated with vincristine and the cardiotoxicity related to anthracyclines. However, these
data have not been fully translated into the clinic due to several limitations, most importantly the lack of
reliable evidence. The most robust pharmacogenomics data are those for thiopurines and methotrexate
use, with evidence-based preemptive testing recommendations for the former. Pharmacogenomics has a
significant potential utility in pediatric ALL treatment regimens. In this review, gaps and limitations in this
field are emphasized, which may provide a useful guide for future research design.

The Effect of Changing the Toothbrush on the Marginal Gingiva Microcirculation in the Adolescent
Population—A Laser Doppler Flowmetry Assessment
by Carmen Todea
It is well-known that proper tooth brushing has the effect of stimulating microcirculation in a healthy
gingiva. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microcirculation dynamics at the level of healthy
marginal gingiva in adolescents after changing their toothbrush. Three evaluation instruments were
employed to assess and quantify the effects on the marginal gingiva: the periodontal probing depth (PD),
gingival index (GI) and laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF). A total of 12 adolescents, aged between 15 and
20, were enrolled in the study, resulting in a total of 72 frontal upper teeth for PD and GI and 48 gingival
interdental sites for LDF assessment. For each measurement, the pulp blood flow signal was recorded for
1 min and represented as a pulsatory signal. Data were collected in four moments: before the
toothbrush changed and 24 h, 7 days and 14 days after. For the statistical analysis, the nonparametric
Friedman test was applied for comparisons between more than two pair numeric ...

Laser Er:YAG-Assisted Debonding May Be a Viable Alternative to the Conventional Method for
Monocrystalline Ceramic Brackets
by Carmen Todea
In orthodontic practice, due to the increased interest among patients in smile aesthetics, different types
of brackets are now being used, with those most frequently applied being ones made of polycrystalline
and monocrystalline ceramic. The aim of this study was to evaluate the laser Er:YAG-assisted debonding
technique compared to conventional methods for removing monocrystalline ceramic brackets from
human teeth. The study sample included 60 vital teeth (frontals of the upper jaw) from 10 patients who
had monocrystalline ceramic brackets and were in the final phase of orthodontic treatment. The
debonding procedure was carried out following a split-mouth study design, using either the conventional
technique or laser Er:YAG 2940 nm radiation. For each tooth, three variables were evaluated: the
patient’s sujective tooth sensitivity associated with the debonding, the time required for debonding, and
pulp blood flow microdynamics after the debonding. Three evaluation instruments were u...

Phenomenological Metaphysics and the problems of facticity and genesis. The twofold unity of primal
hyle and God as the limits of the world-spanning teleology
by Irene Breuer
This paper deals with Husserl's conception of a phenomenological metaphysics, its realm of primal facts
and the teleology involved therein. It claims that the necessary positing of the embodied Ego, which in
Ideas I is merely methodologically necessary such as to allow for eidetic variation, is later posited on
ontological grounds as the content, along with other primal facts, of this newly conceived Metaphysics.
This involves an inversion of the order of foundation, since now eidetic phenomenology presupposes this
ontological grounding. As to metaphysical teleology, which runs from the primal hyle to God as guiding
principle, I will inquire into the conception of teleological rational theology as Vernunftglaube and
disclose the different meanings attributed to facticity, the absolute, transcendence, necessity, and
contingency. Phenomenological metaphysics involves thus a structure composed by embodied I,
worldliness, intersubjectivity and historicity that unfolds within a teleological theology.

The objective of the present work is to develop a robust, yet simple-to-implement algorithm for dynamic
vehicle-track-structure-interaction (VTSI) analysis, applicable to trains passing over bridges. The algo-
rithm can be readily implemented in existing bridge analysis software with minimal code modifications.
It is based on modeling the bridge and train separately, and coupling them together by means of kine-
matic constraints. The contact forces between the wheels and the track become Lagrange multipliers in
this approach. A direct implementation of such an approach results in spurious oscillations in the con-
tact forces. Two approaches are presented to mitigate these spurious oscillations – (a) a cubic B-spline
interpolation of the kinematic constraints in time, and (b) an adaptation of an alternate time- integration
scheme originally developed by Bathe. Solutions obtained using this algorithm are verified using a
generic differential algebraic equation (DAE) solver. Due to high train speeds and possible track
irregularities, wheels can momentarily lose contact with the track. This contact separation is formulated
as a Linear Complementary Problem (LCP). With this formulation, including contact separation in the
analysis amounts to replacing a call to a linear equation solver by a call to an LCP solver, a modification of
only two steps of the procedure. The focus of this paper is on the computational procedure of VTSI
analysis. The main contribution of this paper is recognizing computational issues associated with time-
varying kinematic constraints, clearly identifying their cause and developing remedies.

Time trends, regional variability and seasonality regarding the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus in
Romanian children aged 0-14 years, between 1996 and 2015
The incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus in children is highly variable in the world. The aim of our study
was to analyze the evolution of the incidence of childhood type 1 diabetes in Romania between 1996
and 2015, and to search for differences amongst age groups, gender, geographic regions and month of
diagnosis. All new cases of type 1 diabetes, aged <15 years, diagnosed by two independent sources,
were included in the study. The statistical methods included modeling of the incidence rates, adjusting
for age groups, sex, calendar year, geographic region and seasonality. The study group was composed by
5,422 children, with overall completeness of ascertainment estimated at 93.7%. The incidence rate (per
100,000 person-years) rose continuously, from 4.7 (95% CI 3.9-5.7) in 1996 to 11.0 (95% CI 9.9-12.2) in
2015, by a yearly rate of 5.1%, highest in the youngest and lowest in the oldest children. The mean
incidence was significantly higher (p <0.0001) in Transylvania (7.9, 95...

Statins are the most common drugs administered for patients with cardiovascular disease. However, due
to statin-associated muscle symptoms, adherence to statin therapy is challenging in clinical practice.
Certain nutraceuticals, such as red yeast rice, bergamot, berberine, artichoke, soluble fiber, and plant
sterols and stanols alone or in combination with each other, as well as with ezetimibe, might be
considered as an alternative or add-on therapy to statins, although there is still insufficient evidence
available with respect to long-term safety and effectiveness on cardiovascular disease prevention and
treatment. These nutraceuticals could exert significant lipid-lowering activity and might present multiple
non-lipid-lowering actions, including improvement of endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness, as
well as anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. The aim of this expert opinion paper is to provide
the first attempt at recommendation on the management of statin i...

Antioxidant Effects of Statins by Modulating Nrf2 and Nrf2/HO-1 Signaling in Different Diseases
by Željko Reiner
Statins are competitive inhibitors of hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase and have been
used to treat elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) for almost four decades. Antioxidant
and anti-inflammatory properties which are independent of the lipid-lowering effects of statins, i.e.,
their pleiotropic effects, might be beneficial in the prevention or treatment of many diseases. This
review discusses the antioxidant effects of statins achieved by modulating the nuclear factor erythroid 2
related factor 2/ heme oxygenase-1 (Nrf2/HO-1) pathway in different organs and diseases. Nrf2 and
other proteins involved in the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway have a crucial role in cellular responses to
oxidative stress, which is a risk factor for ASCVD. Statins can significantly increase the DNA-binding
activity of Nrf2 and induce the expression of its target genes, such as HO-1 and glutathione peroxidase)
GPx, (thus protecting the cells against oxidative stress. Antioxidant and a...

Although microgrids facilitate the increased penetration of distributed generations (DGs) and improve
the security of power supplies, they have some issues that need to be better understood and addressed
before realising the full potential of microgrids. This paper presents a comprehensive list of challenges
and opportunities supported by a literature review on the evolution of converter-based microgrids. The
discussion in this paper presented with a view to establishing microgrids as distinct from the existing
distribution systems. This is accomplished by, firstly, describing the challenges and benefits of using DG
units in a distribution network and then those of microgrid ones. Also, the definitions, classifications and
characteristics of microgrids are revised according to their specific roles to provide a sound basis for
novice researchers to undertake ongoing research on microgrids.

Drospirenone (DRSP) is an antialdosterone agent with progestogenic and antiandrogenic effects. This
compound, has been recently used in combination with 17β-estradiol (E2) as hormonal therapy in
postmenopausal women and has been shown to exert a significant antihypertensive effect in
hypertensive post-menopausal women. Aim of the present study was to compare the effect of DRSP/E2
with those of Tibolone (T) on endothelial function, arterial stiffness, and lipid profile of early
postmenopausal women naïve on post-menopausal hormonal therapy. Twenty-four women met the
inclusion criteria and entered the study. Women were randomized to receive either DRSP/E2 or T for
6months. Blood pressure and heart rate were similar in both groups at baseline and at the end of the
study. Compared to baseline, endothelial function assessed by Reactive Hyperemia (RH) significantly
improved in women receiving E2/DRSP, whereas no significant differences between baseline and follow

We aimed to assess the impact of L-carnitine on plasma Lp(a) concentrations through systematic review
and meta-analysis of available RCTs. The literature search included selected databases up to 31(st)
January 2015. Meta-analysis was performed using fixed-effects or random-effect model according to I(2)
statistic. Effect sizes were expressed as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval
(CI). The meta-analysis showed a significant reduction of Lp(a) levels following L-carnitine
supplementation (WMD: -8.82 mg/dL, 95% CI: -10.09, -7.55, p < 0.001). When the studies were
categorized according to the route of administration, a significant reduction in plasma Lp(a)
concentration was observed with oral (WMD: -9.00 mg/dL, 95% CI: -10.29, -7.72, p < 0.001) but not
intravenous L-carnitine (WMD: -2.91 mg/dL, 95% CI: -10.22, 4.41, p = 0.436). The results of the meta-

Statins are highly effective for preventing cardiovascular events by reducing low-density lipoprotein
cholesterol (LDL-C). However, many patients taking statins report muscle-related symptoms that prevent
the use of guideline recommended doses. Patients with reported intolerance to statins have a high risk
of cardiovascular events. Clinical strategies that optimize cardiovascular risk reduction through LDL-C
lowering need to be applied in patients experiencing intolerable side effects that they attribute to
statins. In this paper, the authors review definitions of statin intolerance, propose algorithms to better
define statin intolerance, and describe approaches to optimize cardiovascular risk reduction among
individuals reporting statin-associated muscle symptoms.
