Telling  time

It’s  one  o’clock.   È  l’una.  
It’s  noon.   È  mezzogiorno.  
Sono  le  dodici.  
It’s  midnight.   È  mezzanotte.  
Sono  le  ventiquattro.  
It’s  two  o’clock.   Sono  le  due.  
It’s  a  quarter  past  two.   Sono  le  due  e  un  quarto.  
It’s  a  quarter  to  three.   Sono  le  tre  meno  un  quarto.  
It’s  five  thirty.   Sono  le  cinque  e  mezzo.  
Sono  le  cinque  e  mezza.  
Sono  le  cinque  e  trenta.  
 
 
• Che  ore  sono?  and  Che  ora  è?  are  both  correct  and  can  be  used  interchangeably.  
• Notice  that  hours  are  plural,  except  for    
noon  (mezzogiorno),  midnight  (mezzanotte),  
and  one  o’  clock  (l’una).  
• “Half”  when  telling  time  is  translated  with  mezzo  or  mezza.  You  can  use  these  
interchangeably.  
• The  article  used  for  all  hours  is  le  (le  due,  le  tre,  etc.),  which  is  the  definite  article  
“the”  used  for  plural  feminine  nouns.    
• The  article  for  1:00  is  l’:  È  l’una  (It’s  one  o’clock).  
• Mezzanotte  and  mezzogiorno  do  not  require  an  article.

It’s  7:00  a.m.     Sono  le  sette  di  mattina.  
It’s  2:00  p.m.   Sono  le  due  di  pomeriggio.  
It’s  8:00  p.m.   Sono  le  otto  di  sera.
