Gulliver’s travels è un romanzo scritto da Jonathan swift nel 1726.

Anche se può sembrare una semplice storia per bambini si tratta di una critica alla società
del tempo. Tratta alcuni temi importanti come la politica, l'irrazionalità della guerra e i motivi
che la causano.
All'inizio della storia Gulliver si presenta come una persona di mezza età, di classe
borghese, alto 195 centimetri e con una grande passione per i viaggi.

Compie il primo viaggio per mancanza di soldi e si imbarca fingendosi un chirurgo. La nave
naufraga e si ritrova su un'isola, dove viene legato da esseri alti 15 cm, abitanti delle isole di
Lilliput e Blefuscu che erano in contrasto riguardo al modo più corretto di rompere le uova,
se dalla parte più grossa o da quella più piccola. Gulliver viene accolto e aiuta i Lillipuziani a
sconfiggere Blefuscu e spegne il castello che stava andando in fiamme con la propria urina.

Successivamente sale su una nave, nella speranza di tornare a casa ma naufraga a

Brobdingnag dove viene accolto da un contadino alto 22 metri. La regina ordina che gli
venga costruita una “scatola da viaggio”,cioè una casa per lui, che verrà in seguito presa da
un'aquila e gettata in mare. Gulliver allora si tuffa in mare e viene salvato da una nave diretta
in Inghilterra.

Decide di ripartire verso le Indie orientali, ma la nave viene attaccata da un gruppo di pirati.
Gulliver dopo essere approdato su una terra viene salvato da una città volante: Laputa, i cui
abitanti si dedicano alla musica e alla matematica che non sanno applicare in modo pratico.
Successivamente si reca a Glubbdubdrib dove incontra un mago e discute di storia con i
fantasmi dei personaggi storici più famosi, come Giulio Cesare, Bruto, Omero.
Sull'isola di Luggnagg incontra persone che hanno il dono dell'immortalità, ma non
dell'eterna giovinezza e perciò esse sostengono che l'immortalità sia una condanna e non
una fortuna. Successivamente torna in Inghilterra.

Riparte con la nave, ma viene abbandonato su un territorio abitato da cavalli razionali, gli
houyhnhnm, dotati di parola e intelligenza. Su questa terra vivono anche gli yahoos, uguali
nell'aspetto fisico agli umani, ma degenerati e Gulliver si vergogna di essi. Siccome è simile
a loro viene cacciato dai cavalli e torna a casa grazie ad una zattera. In Inghilterra trova la
sua famiglia ma ma non riesce a sopportare gli esseri umani siccome ragiona come i cavalli
che aveva incontrato.

Gulliver's Travels is a novel written by Jonathan Swift in 1726.

Although it may seem like a simple story for children, it is a critique of the society of the time.
It deals with some important issues such as politics, the irrationality of war and the reasons
that cause it.
At the beginning of the story Gulliver presents himself as a middle-aged, middle-class
person, 195 centimeters tall and with a great passion for travel.

He made his first trip for lack of money and embarked on pretending to be a surgeon. The
ship was shipwrecked and he reached an island, where he was tied up by beings 15 cm tall,
inhabitants of the islands of Lilliput and Blefuscu who were at odds regarding the most
correct way to break the eggs, whether from the larger part or from the smaller. Gulliver was
greeted and helped the Lilliputians defeat Blefuscu and extinguished the castle that was
burning up with his own urine.

He later got on a ship, hoping to return home but was shipwrecked in Brobdingnag where he
was greeted by a 22-meter-tall farmer. The queen ordered to build a house for him that she
called "travel box", which would later be taken by an eagle and thrown into the sea. Gulliver
then dived into the sea and was rescued by a ship bound for England.

Afterwards he decided to leave for the East Indies, but the ship was attacked by a group of
pirates. Gulliver after landing on a land is saved by a flying city: Laputa, whose inhabitants
devoted themselves to music and mathematics that they do not know how to apply in a
practical way. Later he went to Glubbdubdrib where he met a magician and discussed
history with the ghosts of the most famous historical figures, such as Julius Caesar, Brutus,
Homer.
On the island of Luggnagg he met people who had the gift of immortality, but not of eternal
youth and therefore they claimed that immortality was a sentence and not a fortune. Later he
returned to England.

He left again with the ship, but was abandoned on a territory inhabited by rational horses,
called the houyhnhnm, endowed with speech and intelligence. This place was also inhabited
by yahoos, who were identical to humans in physical appearance, but they were degenerate
and Gulliver was ashamed of them. Due to his similar appearance he was chased by horses
and he returned home thanks to a raft. In England he founds his family but he cannot bear
human beings as he thinks like the horses he had met.
